A full-trilogy guide for the PC remaster: how the three games differ, crates and gems, time-trial relics, bonus paths and Death Routes, boss tips, the two bonus levels (Stormy Ascent and Future Tense), and an achievement plan.

Researched September 2026 — the PC version (released June 29, 2018) is a finished product with no recent patches; Crash's 30th anniversary was celebrated in September 2026. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Play in order if you're new: Crash 1, then 2, then 3. Crash 1 is the hardest and least forgiving, but playing it first means 2 and 3 feel easy. If you want a gentler start, begin with Crash 2 or 3 instead.
  • Use a controller. The trilogy is built around analog precision and a D-pad-like rhythm.
  • Coco is playable in most levels across all three games, with her own animations but identical mechanics. Pick whoever you like.
  • Break every box for gems. Clearing all crates in a level awards a gem. Colored gems open new paths.
  • Time Trials exist in all three games. Beat a level first, then race it for Sapphire, Gold, or Platinum relics.
  • Death Routes (Crash 2 and 3) open only if you reach a special platform without dying in that level (each game has an achievement for finding one: "Cheated Death (For the Time Being)" and "Not a Scratch (Give It Time)"). They lead to extra crates or paths.
  • Bonus rounds ('?' platforms) are separate mini-stages. Falling there doesn't cost a life.
  • Aku Aku masks protect you. Three masks make you briefly invincible.
  • Collect 100 Wumpa fruit for an extra life. Farm lives on easy levels before hard ones.
  • The game auto-saves after each level, and the three games share a unified save system.

What Changed from the PlayStation Originals

Change | Why it matters

Coco playable in most levels | Personal preference; same moves

Time Trials (from Warped) added to Crash 1 and 2, with online leaderboards | Relic achievements go up to 26 gold-or-better relics in Crash 1 and 27 in Crash 2

Unified save system and auto-save | No more password screens or save-point bonus rounds

Loading-screen hints | Point you toward collectibles and alternate paths

Stormy Ascent (Crash 1) | A cut level from the original, restored

Future Tense (Crash 3) | A brand-new level for Warped

Remade physics | Crash 1's jumps feel different from the original; many players find ledges less forgiving

The Crash 1 physics note: in the remaster, Crash's collision is more rounded, so landing on the very edge of a platform can make you slip off. Aim for the middle of platforms, especially in Crash 1's high-altitude levels.

Core Moves

Move | Available in | Use

Jump | All | Also bounces on enemies and crates

Spin | All | Main attack; breaks crates; knocks enemies into others

Slide | 2, 3 | Low attack; slide-jump for longer jumps

Belly flop / body slam | 2, 3 | Breaks reinforced crates

Crawl | 2, 3 | Get under hazards

High jump (crouch then jump) | 2, 3 | Reach higher platforms

Crash 3 power-ups come from beating bosses, one per warp room:

Boss | Power-up

Tiny Tiger | Super Body Slam (super belly flop)

Dingodile | Double Jump

N. Tropy | Death Tornado Spin

N. Gin | Fruit Bazooka

N. Cortex | Crash Dash (speed shoes)

The Double Jump and Death Tornado Spin make everything easier; the Crash Dash is essential for tight relic times.

Crates and Gems

Crate types to know

  • Regular and bounce crates: break or bounce for fruit.
  • Arrow crates: springy launch crates.
  • Checkpoint crates: respawn point. Break them even when you're going for gems.
  • Aku Aku crates: a protective mask.
  • TNT crates: a fuse starts when you touch them. Jump on and move away, or spin them from range.
  • Nitro crates: explode on contact. In Crash 2 and 3, a green "!" switch box detonates all Nitros in the level at once.
  • Outline crates: activated by a "!" box to become solid.
  • Iron and reinforced crates: need a body slam or a special trigger.

Gems

  • Clear gems usually come from breaking every crate.
  • Colored gems unlock colored gem paths in other levels. You'll often need to backtrack to a level after getting a colored gem.
  • Box totals include crates in bonus rounds and on alternate paths.
  • Totals for achievements: Crash 1 "The Ultimate Gem Path" (26 gems), Crash 2 "Laser Powered Vengeance" (42 gems), Crash 3 "Bringing Down the House" (42 gems).

Crash Bandicoot (Crash 1)

Structure: three islands of levels with bosses Papu Papu, Ripper Roo, Koala Kong, Pinstripe Potoroo, Dr. N. Brio, and Dr. Neo Cortex.

Bonus rounds: collect three matching character tokens to enter a bonus round ("That's What Those Do!" achievement).

Hard levels to prepare for: the high-altitude levels (like The High Road and Slippery Climb), the boulder chase levels, and the dark levels (Lights Out, Fumbling in the Dark). Take them slowly.

Hog levels (Hog Wild, Whole Hog) are auto-running. Memorize them rather than reacting.

Stormy Ascent is on the Crash 1 map. It's widely considered the hardest level in the trilogy: fast retracting steps, vial-throwing lab assistants, birds, moving platforms, and iron spikes. Getting its gem unlocks "The Crown Jewel."

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

Structure: five warp rooms, five levels each, each with a Crystal to collect before the boss. Bosses: Ripper Roo, the Komodo Brothers, Tiny Tiger, Dr. N. Gin, and Dr. Neo Cortex.

Death Routes: skull-marked platforms that appear only if you reach them without dying. Finding one gives "Cheated Death (For the Time Being)."

Secret warps and gem paths: Crash 2 hides secret exits and gem-color paths across its warp rooms. Loading-screen tips help.

Jetpack levels in the final warp room feel very different. Practice turning and firing.

Tip: Crash 2 is the best place to farm lives. Easy early levels are full of Wumpa and crates.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

Structure: five warp rooms of time-travel levels (medieval, Egypt, prehistoric, future, and more), with bosses Tiny Tiger, Dingodile, N. Tropy, N. Gin, and N. Cortex. Each boss gives a new power.

Coco vehicle levels: jet ski and tiger-riding levels.

Relics matter more here. In Warped, your first five relics open a level in the Secret Warp Room, and every five after that opens another, so relics are part of full completion. 30 gold-or-better relics unlock "Boo-yah, Grandma! Boo-yah!"

Future Tense is the new level made for the remaster, set in a futuristic skyscraper with rockets, robots, and lasers. Getting its gem unlocks "The Future is Clear," and shooting a background UFO gives "Fruit Fighter."

Bonus levels: earning the gems in the bonus levels gives "Giving 102%."

Time Trials and Relics

  • Beat the level normally first.
  • Touch the stopwatch at the start to begin a time trial.
  • Yellow crates freeze the clock (1, 2, or 3 seconds depending on the number).
  • Beat the Sapphire, Gold, or Platinum time for that relic.

Tips:

  • Deaths reset you to the start, so a clean run matters more than raw speed.
  • Crash 3's Crash Dash and Double Jump make relics far easier in Warped.
  • Slide-jumps (Crash 2 and 3) carry extra speed.
  • Leaderboards track the best times online.

Relic achievements: 5 relics in each game, then 10 gold-or-better in each, and full sets (26 in Crash 1, 27 in Crash 2, 30 in Crash 3).

Boss Tips

Boss | Game | Tip

Papu Papu | 1 | Jump on his head between swings

Ripper Roo | 1, 2 | Let his own explosives do the work; attack only when he's dazed

Koala Kong | 1 | Dodge his throws and send projectiles back at him

Pinstripe Potoroo | 1 | Hide behind furniture until he reloads

Dr. N. Brio | 1 | Stomp the blobs, then hit him when he transforms

Komodo Brothers | 2 | Dodge the thrown swords and spin attacks, then hit whichever brother is dizzy

Tiny Tiger | 2, 3 | Dodge the jumps and wait for openings

Dingodile | 3 | Keep moving to avoid his flamethrower and strike when he's exposed

N. Tropy | 3 | Jump across the platforms when he's vulnerable

N. Gin | 2, 3 | Shoot his mech's weak points

N. Cortex | 1, 2, 3 | Stay patient; each version has a clear pattern

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Landing on platform edges in Crash 1. Aim for the middle.
  • Breaking a Nitro by accident during a gem run. Many gems need every crate; plan the route.
  • Skipping checkpoints on gem runs. Checkpoints don't break gem runs.
  • Starting relics before learning the level. Learn the route, then race.
  • Forgetting bonus-round crates when you're counting boxes.
  • Ignoring Death Routes. In Crash 2 and 3, some gems need them.

Advanced Tips

  • Farm lives in Crash 2 and 3 before tackling Crash 1's hardest levels or Stormy Ascent (earning 99 lives is an achievement in each game).
  • Spin enemies into enemies for "Spin Doctor" in Crash 1.
  • Coco-specific achievements: defeat 5 enemies with Coco's Spin (Crash 1), Coco's Double Leg Drop (Crash 2), and Coco's Savage Hurricane Spin (Crash 3).
  • Backtrack efficiently. After a colored gem, check which levels have that color path before moving on.
  • For Stormy Ascent, practice the first half repeatedly. Checkpoints are sparse, so treat each section as its own mini-level.

FAQ

Which game should I start with? Crash 1 is hardest, Crash 3 is easiest. New players often enjoy starting with Crash 2 or 3.

Where is Stormy Ascent? On the Crash 1 level map. It's included in the PC version.

Where is Future Tense? In Crash 3: Warped, as a new bonus level added for the remaster.

Can I play as Coco? Yes, in most levels of all three games.

Why do I keep slipping off platforms in Crash 1? The remaster's collision is rounder than the original's. Land in the center of platforms.

Do deaths ruin a gem run? In Crash 2 and 3, no: dying doesn't stop you earning the crate gem as long as every crate is broken, but Death Route platforms only appear if you reach them without dying. Crash 1 on the original PlayStation required a deathless run for crate gems; the remaster is commonly reported to have relaxed that, but if a Crash 1 gem doesn't pop after a run with deaths, replay it cleanly.

Is it still updated? No; it's a finished remaster. Recent Steam news is 30th-anniversary celebration content (September 2026).
