A guide to the original 2007 Call of Duty 4 on PC: a mission-by-mission campaign outline, intel and Arcade/cheat unlocks, Veteran survival tips, and how the classic multiplayer works on community servers today.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch 1.7 (no official updates in many years; the Steam page carries no recent announcements). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Which version is this? This guide covers the 2007 original (Steam app 7940), not Modern Warfare Remastered (2016) or the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot. The original's multiplayer is still playable on PC through community-hosted dedicated servers found in the in-game server browser.
Quick Start
- Take the aim test in F.N.G. The training mission at Credenhill has you run a timed course, and the game recommends a difficulty based on your performance.
- Difficulty options: Recruit, Regular, Hardened, Veteran. Veteran is famously brutal; do a first run on Regular or Hardened.
- Hunt the enemy intel. 30 laptops are hidden across the campaign. Collecting them unlocks cheats for replaying missions.
- Grenades are the real threat on Veteran. Watch the grenade indicator and move immediately.
- Cover is everything. Health regenerates, but only if you stop taking hits. Break line of sight constantly.
- Multiplayer levels you up and unlocks gear. Create-a-Class opens early, with guns, attachments and perks unlocking as you rank up to the level cap of 55, followed by optional Prestige.
- Killstreaks: 3 kills for a UAV, 5 for an airstrike, 7 for an attack helicopter.
- The epilogue is hidden. Finish the campaign and sit through the credits to unlock Mile High Club.
Campaign Outline
You alternate between Sgt. John "Soap" MacTavish of the British SAS (with Captain Price and Gaz) and Sgt. Paul Jackson of the U.S. Marines, fighting Russian Ultranationalists and a Middle Eastern coup.

Mission tips
- Crew Expendable: clear corners methodically on the ship; the timer only matters at the end, so sprint once it starts.
- Charlie Don't Surf / Shock and Awe: lots of enemies shoot from windows and rooftops. Advance cover to cover.
- The Bog: use your night vision and the tank's fire; hold positions rather than charging.
- Death From Above: identify friendlies (they flash) before firing the heavier guns.
- All Ghillied Up: follow Captain MacMillan's lead exactly. Going prone in grass and waiting for patrols to pass is the intended approach.
- One Shot, One Kill: account for bullet drop and wind on the long shot; during the defense at the Ferris wheel, place claymores at approaches and use every piece of cover.
- Heat: fall back steadily; staying too long in one position is how you get flanked.
- No Fighting in the War Room: time pressure is real. Clear, advance, repeat without hesitating.
- Mile High Club: on Veteran it is a notoriously tight timed run; memorize the enemy positions.
Intel, Arcade Mode and Cheats
- Enemy Intel are laptops hidden in levels. There are 30 in total.
- Cheats unlock at intel milestones and can be toggled when replaying missions. They include visual filters and gameplay modifiers, such as infinite ammo and slow motion.
- Arcade Mode unlocks after completing the campaign. Enemies award points, you have lives, and a timer counts down; it turns missions into score attack runs.
- Cheats cannot be used for your first clear; they are rewards for replays.
Veteran Survival Tips
- Move less, peek more. Most deaths on Veteran come from exposing yourself to several enemies at once.
- Enemies respawn until you cross a trigger. In some areas, holding a position forever does not work; advance to the next piece of cover to stop the flow.
- Throw grenades back or run. When the indicator appears, sprint away instead of trying to finish the fight.
- Use flashbangs. They freeze enemies in rooms and hallways, making clears much safer.
- Checkpoint awareness. Checkpoints appear on the screen; after one, plan your next push rather than improvising.
Multiplayer
How to play in 2026
- Launch the multiplayer executable from Steam and open the server browser. All matches run on community-hosted dedicated servers.
- Server quality varies. Look for low ping and an active population.
- CoD4x is a long-running community project that extends CoD4 client and server functionality; many servers run it and may prompt you to install its client. Only download it from the project's official site.
Create-a-Class and progression
- Rank up by earning XP from kills, objectives and challenges. The level cap is 55, after which you can Prestige to reset and earn an emblem.
- Guns unlock as you rank; attachments (red dot, ACOG, grip, silencer, and camos) unlock through weapon challenges.
Perks
Each class takes one perk from each tier:
Tier 1 (equipment) | Tier 2 (core) | Tier 3 (utility)
C4 | Stopping Power | Extreme Conditioning
Special Grenades (extra flash or stun) | Juggernaut | Steady Aim
RPG-7 | Sleight of Hand | Last Stand
Claymore | Double Tap | Martyrdom
Frag x3 | Overkill | Deep Impact
Bandolier | UAV Jammer | Iron Lungs
Bomb Squad | Sonic Boom | Dead Silence
Eavesdrop
Popular choices: Stopping Power (more bullet damage) is the default Tier 2 for most classes. Deep Impact (bullet penetration) and Steady Aim (hip-fire accuracy for SMGs and LMGs) are strong Tier 3 picks.
Killstreaks
Streak | Reward
3 kills | UAV (shows enemies on your radar)
5 kills | Airstrike
7 kills | Attack helicopter
Kills from killstreak rewards do not count toward the next streak.
Maps
Classic maps include Ambush, Backlot, Bloc, Bog, Countdown, Crash, Crossfire, District, Downpour, Overgrown, Pipeline, Shipment, Showdown, Strike, Vacant and Wet Work. The Variety Map Pack added Broadcast, Chinatown, Creek and Killhouse; on PC it was a free download (June 2008, sponsored by Nvidia), so any up-to-date PC install has them. Shipment and Killhouse are tiny, frantic maps; Overgrown, Bog and Countdown are larger and reward snipers.
Modes
Team Deathmatch, Free-for-All, Domination, Headquarters, Sabotage and Search and Destroy, plus Hardcore variants on many servers (lower health, minimal HUD).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running through open ground on Veteran. Cover to cover, every time.
- Missing intel. It is easy to rush past; replaying missions costs time.
- Using the airstrike on empty areas. Wait for a UAV sweep or a known cluster of enemies.
- Sniping without Stopping Power. Many sniper rifles need it for reliable body kills.
- Joining the first server you see. High ping ruins CoD4's fast gunfights.
- Installing random "fix" downloads. Stick to official patches and well-known community projects.
Advanced Tips
- Pre-aim common angles. CoD4's fights are won by whoever is already aiming at the right spot.
- Use the radar. Enemies firing unsilenced weapons appear as red dots; a UAV shows everyone.
- Throw flashbangs before entering rooms. Stunned enemies cannot fight back.
- Pick perks for the map. UAV Jammer on radar-heavy servers, Dead Silence on small maps, Deep Impact on maps with thin walls.
- Campaign speedrun routes: replaying missions with Arcade mode trains you to move fast and aggressively.
FAQ
Is CoD4 (2007) multiplayer still alive on PC? Yes, through community-hosted servers in the in-game browser. Populations are smaller than in its prime but active servers remain.
How many intel pieces are there? 30 enemy intel laptops across the campaign.
How do I unlock Mile High Club? Complete the campaign and let the credits roll; the epilogue follows.
What is Arcade Mode? A score-attack version of the campaign unlocked after completion, with points, lives and a timer.
Should I play the original or Modern Warfare Remastered? The original is cheaper and has community servers; the Remastered version updates visuals and has its own official multiplayer.
What is the level cap? Level 55, followed by Prestige (up to ten times).
How do I use the intel cheats? Collect intel to unlock them, then toggle them from the cheats menu when replaying missions. They are meant for replays rather than your first clear; turn them off for any run where you want a clean difficulty completion.
