A practical guide to Brawlhalla: movement and combat fundamentals, how legends and weapons work, what's new this season, and how to climb ranked without picking up bad habits.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 10.11 (Battle Pass Season 14: Elysium Rising, launched September 16, 2026; Ranked Season 42 began September 23, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Set up a comfortable control layout first. On keyboard, most competitive players use separate keys for jump and aim, for example WASD to move and aim with Light, Heavy, Dodge/Dash, Throw and Jump on the right hand. On controller, turn off tap-jump (jump on Up) unless you really want it.
  • Learn the core loop: dodge, punish, combo, edgeguard. Nearly all early improvement comes from dodging less randomly and punishing more.
  • Stop spamming heavy attacks (signatures). They're powerful but slow to recover, so use them as punishes and kill moves.
  • Your dodge has a cooldown. Once you've used it, you're vulnerable for a moment. Don't waste it.
  • Recover low and unpredictably. You have multiple jumps plus a Recovery move (Up/Neutral Heavy in the air) and a Ground Pound (Down Heavy in the air). Mix up how you get back to the stage.
  • Master one or two weapons, not one legend. Every legend uses two of the game's weapons, so learning a weapon carries over to many legends.
  • The Training Room is your best friend. Practice true combos on a dummy, and check move frame data.
  • Free rotation plus Gold: A rotating set of legends is free each week. Everything else unlocks with Gold (earned by playing) or Mammoth Coins (paid).

Controls and Movement

Action | What it does | Tip

Move / aim | Walk, run, and choose attack direction | Direction plus attack changes the move

Jump | Ground jump plus air jumps | Save one jump for recovery

Light attack | Quick moves: Neutral, Side, Down Light, plus Neutral Air, Side Air, Down Air | Lights make up most combos

Heavy attack (ground) | Signatures: legend-specific Neutral, Side, Down Sig for each weapon | Strong but punishable

Heavy attack (air) | Recovery (Up/Neutral Heavy in air) and Ground Pound (Down Heavy in air) | Recovery gets you back; Ground Pound can be dangerous if used carelessly

Dodge | Spot dodge or directional dodge; on the ground while moving it becomes a dash | Dodge cooldown resets on landing, over time, and after hitting someone (chase dodge)

Throw | Throw your weapon or an item | Weapon throws are a strong, often-overlooked tool

Pick up | Grab weapons that spawn on the stage | Keep your weapon rather than dropping it carelessly

Key movement techniques

  • Wall cling and wall jump: Stick to walls to recover. Wall jumps don't use up your air jumps.
  • Fast fall: Hold down while falling to drop faster, which makes you land harder to predict.
  • Dash: Dodge on the ground while moving to travel quickly or cancel into attacks.
  • Chase dodge: After landing a hit, your dodge refreshes more quickly, so you can follow the opponent and continue your combo.
  • Gravity cancel (GC): Spot dodge in the air, then press Light to do a ground move in the air. This is one of the most important techniques in the game.
  • Dash jump / dash cancel: Chaining dashes and jumps gives you speed and mix-ups.

Legends and Stats

Each legend has four stats (Strength, Dexterity, Defense, Speed) that add up to a set total, plus two weapons.

Stat | Effect

Strength | Damage and knockback

Dexterity | Stun on hit; affects combo potential

Defense | Harder to KO, better survivability

Speed | Movement and recovery speed

Stances let you shift stat points around a legend's default spread before a match, for example trading Defense for Strength.

Newest legends (2026)

Legend | Added | Weapons | Notes

Aurus | Patch 10.08 (June 17, 2026) | Spear, Chakram | Got his first balance pass in 10.10 (stronger Side Spear, Down Spear, Side Chakram) and is now legal in official tournaments

Qinghua & Baobao | Patch 10.10 (August 19, 2026) | Orb, Cannon | Level 50 titles "The Voyager" and "The Void"; stats 5 Strength, 4 Dexterity, 5 Defense, 8 Speed. Gold price dropped from 7,200 to 5,400 in 10.11

Weapons

There are 15 weapons: Sword, Hammer, Blasters, Rocket Lance, Spear, Katars, Axe, Bow, Gauntlets, Scythe, Cannon, Orb, Greatsword, Battle Boots, and Chakram.

Weapon | Playstyle | Beginner friendliness

Sword | All-rounder with good strings and recovery | High

Hammer | Heavy hits; strong edgeguards | High

Spear | Long combos, strong neutral | Medium

Axe | Big hitboxes, strong kills | High

Katars | Close range, aggressive combos | Medium

Gauntlets | Fast combos, close pressure | Medium

Blasters | Ranged pokes | Medium

Rocket Lance | Mobility and strong off-stage kills | Medium

Bow | Ranged/mixed with strong reads | Low to medium

Scythe | Tricky angles, strong strings | Low to medium

Greatsword | Stances and strings; unique combo system | Low

Orb | Magic-based, strong control tools | Medium

Cannon | Heavy ranged pressure | Medium

Battle Boots | Kicks, fast mobility | Medium

Chakram | Split/combined forms; complex | Low

Recent balance direction (Patch 10.10)

Patch 10.10 buffed Axe (Side Light damage, Side Air force, Ground Pound damage), Bow (Down Air force), Greatsword (Down Light Opener stun, faster Down Light Finisher), Orb (Down Light stun), Rocket Lance (Side Air force restored), Scythe (faster Down Light recovery, more Neutral Air stun), and Spear (faster Neutral Light recovery on miss, more final-hit stun).

Legend-specific changes went to Aurus, King Zuva, Lady Vera, Nix, Ransom, Thor and Volkov among others, mostly faster charge times and more force on key signatures. Patch 10.11 didn't include a broad balance pass, so these are still the latest changes. If you're picking a main now, the buffed weapons and legends are a good place to start.

Valhallan | Top players per region

  • Ranked Season 42 started September 23, 2026. Players who reach 42 seasons get a special final avatar with a Mjolnir crown instead of continuing seasonal avatars.
  • Glory: Earned at season end based on wins and peak rating. Spend it on cosmetics, including the Crystalforged weapon skins introduced in 10.10.
  • 3v3 Crew Battle (10.11): The queue now uses the 1v1 ranked map pool, and Temple Climb was removed.
  • Season reset: High ratings are partially reset at the start of each season, so expect a few rough matches while you climb back.

Ranked climbing tips

  • Play fewer, higher-quality games. Take a break after two losses in a row.
  • Punish, don't gamble. Hit people when they're committed (after a missed signature, landing, or when their dodge is on cooldown).
  • Edgeguard with safe moves. Don't jump off stage with a slow signature. Use Side Air, Down Air or a throw.
  • Throw your weapon when it helps. It forces a dodge and opens a punish.
  • Watch replays. Spot your habits: panic dodges, predictable recovery, heavy-attack spam.
  • Stock management: Don't take risks when you're a stock ahead. Play the stage and let them come to you.

Season 14: Elysium Rising (current Battle Pass)

  • Launched: September 16, 2026 (Patch 10.11).
  • Theme: Paths of Arbiter, Justiciar and Beholder.
  • Free tier: Feigning Innocence emote, Stained Glass Colors, avatars, emoji skins, "All Seeing" weapon skins, the "Wings of Elysium" title, and a Battle Pass Chest.
  • Gold Pass: "Magyar the Apostate" progression skin (three levels, animated variants), "Stairway to Elysium" progression podium, "Zariel the Exalted" animated epic skin with custom Signature FX, plus Arbiter Jhala, Omniscient Vraxx and Holy Justiciar Vera.
  • Deluxe bundle: 25 tier skips plus exclusive cosmetics.
  • New map: Eternity's End, designed for 1v1. It had its own queue from September 16 to 23 and will return in future Brawl of the Weeks.

Upcoming events

  • Brawlhalloween runs October 7 to 28, 2026. The grand prize is the Ghost Pirate Sidra skin, plus the Ringo Sidekick, a title and emoji skins from event tickets. Win a matchmade game with a legend to earn that legend's Ghoulish Colors. A new Haunted Manor Podium and last year's event items return for Mammoth Coins in Mallhalla.
  • Sponsored Video Rewards are discontinued after September 30, 2026. Anyone who was offered them has had their progress shifted close to the Grand Prize, so finish it before then.

Currencies and What to Buy

Currency | Source | Spend on

Gold | Playing matches, missions, level-ups | Legends (priority), some colors

Mammoth Coins | Paid | Skins, Battle Pass, bundles, CMYK Colors

Glory | Ranked season rewards | Ranked cosmetics (Crystalforged skins)

Event currencies / tokens | Seasonal events, guilds | Event rewards; Guild Token weapon skins (10.10)

Free-to-play tips:

  • Buy legends you'll actually play with Gold. Try them during free rotation first.
  • The Battle Pass free track is worth completing for cosmetics and chests.
  • Don't spend Mammoth Coins on random CMYK Colors unless you check which legend they apply to first. 10.10 made that visible before purchase.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mashing dodge. Once it's on cooldown, you get combo'd.
  • Heavy-attack spam. Signatures are punishable, so use them as reads and kill moves.
  • Burning all your jumps early off-stage. Keep your recovery for last.
  • Always recovering the same way. Opponents read it and edgeguard you.
  • Ignoring weapon throws. They're strong tools, especially for pressure and edgeguards.
  • Main-hopping legends. Stick with a weapon pair long enough to learn its combos.
  • Playing only Free-for-All if you want to improve at 1v1. The skills don't fully transfer.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn "true" combos and strings for your weapons in the Training Room using frame data and hit markers.
  • Gravity cancel options: GC into Side Light or Neutral Light out of the air creates mix-ups that catch dodges.
  • Chase dodge reads: After your first hit, watch which way they dodge and follow.
  • Wall play: Stage walls give free recovery. Don't give up center stage if you don't need to.
  • Stat and stance adjustments: Shift stats toward Dexterity for combo-heavy weapons, or toward Strength for kill power.
  • Play the ranked map pool in custom games to learn platform layouts. The 1v1 ranked pool now also applies to 3v3 Crew Battles.
