A practical guide to Battlerite, Stunlock Studios' free-to-play 2v2/3v3 arena brawler: how rounds work, what to press and when, champion roles, drafting, and how to climb in the new rolling ranked seasons.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the first rolling ranked season (reset 2 September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

State of the game (September 2026): Battlerite has been in maintenance mode since 2019 (the last content update was October 2019). There is no new champion or balance work, but the servers are up and the game is still free on Steam. In June 2026 Stunlock pushed a small technical patch so the ranked ladder could reset on a schedule, and on 2 September 2026 at 08:00 UTC the old "infinite season" ended. Seasons now run for six months, rolling over each September and March — the next reset is March 2027. Stunlock said it would hand out titles for the infinite season by hand, and warned it may not be able to give titles in later seasons.

Quick Start

  • It's a best-of-five round fight, not a MOBA. You don't farm, buy items or push towers. Win three rounds and the match is yours. A round has a roughly two-minute timer, and then a Sudden Death boundary gradually forces everyone into a small area.
  • Everything is a skillshot or a read. You move with WASD and aim at your cursor. Nearly every ability can be dodged, and the game is mostly about spacing and dodging.
  • Energy wins rounds. Hitting enemies builds energy. Spend it on EX abilities (upgraded versions of your basic skills) or save up for your ultimate. Burning all your energy on EX spam is the most common newbie leak.
  • Respect counters. Many champions have a counter stance or a short invulnerable window. Hitting into one gets you punished. If an enemy suddenly stops and glows, stop attacking.
  • Pick your battlerites before the match. Battlerites are upgrades that change your abilities (more damage, a new effect, extra mobility). Pick a set that suits your team comp and the enemy draft.
  • Fight for the Orb. A central Orb spawns during each round, and the team that destroys it gets healing and energy. Knowing when to contest it and when to give it up decides close rounds.
  • Don't overheal-bait yourself. Part of the damage you take can't be healed back for the rest of the round (it shows as a greyed section of your health bar), so taking needless damage early costs you in the late round.
  • Duo up. 2v2 with a friend on voice is the best way to learn. Coordinated focus and swaps beat raw mechanics.
  • Practice against bots first. Bot and practice modes let you learn each champion's cooldowns and combos without dragging down a ranked teammate.

Core Systems

Controls and ability slots

Every champion uses the same slot layout. Keys are fully rebindable in Settings.

Slot | Default input | Typical use

Primary (M1) | Left mouse | Basic attack, your main source of damage and energy

Secondary (M2) | Right mouse | Heavier hit, heal or utility with a cooldown

Mobility | Space | Dash, jump or teleport, and your main dodge

Q, E, R | Q / E / R | Crowd control, defensives, counters and utility

Ultimate | F | Costs a full energy bar and usually swings a round

EX abilities | Separate binds (see Settings) | Upgraded versions of two basic abilities, paid for with energy

Movement uses WASD, independent of aim. Casting while moving is normal, but some abilities root or slow you while they cast, so learn which ones.

Energy

  • The energy bar fills when you deal damage or heal, and from destroying the Orb.
  • EX abilities spend a segment of energy for a stronger version of a basic skill, often with extra crowd control or damage.
  • Your ultimate needs a full bar. Most ultimates are big area plays or finishers.
  • Energy builds up over the course of a round, so dying with a full bar wastes a round-winning ultimate. If you're about to lose a fight, spend it.

Health, healing and damage

  • Part of all damage becomes unhealable for the rest of the round, so heals fall off as a round drags on. Supports prevent damage (shields, peels, immunity) as much as they heal it.
  • Damage over time, crowd control (stun, root, silence, incapacitate, knockback) and weaken/vulnerable-style debuffs all stack up. Chaining CC with your partner turns a trade into a kill.
  • Cleanse/immunity tools matter. Keep yours for the enemy's key CC chain, not the first poke.

Rounds, the Orb and Sudden Death

  • Each round starts with both teams on opposite sides, and a central Orb spawns between them. Defeating every enemy wins the round.
  • Destroying the Orb gives the team that last-hits it healing and energy. Ranged champions can often steal it from a safe spot, and melee champions can body-block the approach.
  • When the roughly two-minute round timer runs out, a Sudden Death boundary appears and gradually forces everyone into a small area. Teams with strong close-range pressure like it. Kiting comps want to win before it starts.
  • The first team to three round wins takes the match.

Battlerites

Battlerites are per-champion upgrades you lock in before the match. They fall into broad themes: extra damage, survivability, movement, crowd control and support/utility. Rules of thumb:

  • Take at least one survivability or mobility rite on a champion you're still learning.
  • Supports usually want rites that improve their core heal or shield before extra damage.
  • Against heavy dive comps, rites that improve your escape or counter are worth more than raw damage.

Champion Roles and Picks

Champions come in three classes. The roster is unchanged since development ended in 2019, so older tier lists and guides still apply.

Class | Champions | What they do

Melee | Bakko, Croak, El Bastardo, Freya, Jamila, Raigon, Rook, Ruh Kaan, Shifu, Thorn | Engage, lock targets down and punish misplays. They need to close distance and win Sudden Death.

Ranged | Alysia, Ashka, Destiny, Ezmo, Iva, Jade, Jumong, Shen Rao, Taya, Varesh | Poke, zone and burst from range. Positioning is everything, and they're weak when caught.

Support | Blossom, Lucie, Oldur, Pearl, Pestilus, Poloma, Sirius, Ulric, Zander | Heal, shield, peel and CC. They decide the tempo of long rounds.

Beginner-friendly picks

  • Bakko (Melee): A shield-and-charge frontliner. His defensive shield teaches you to block and time engages. Hard to punish, easy to learn.
  • Jumong (Ranged): A straightforward archer. Great for learning skillshot aim and spacing.
  • Lucie (Support): Straightforward heals, strong crowd control and a clear job: keep your partner alive and punish divers.
  • Raigon (Melee): Rewards learning counters. His kit teaches you when an enemy is baiting you.

Picks that need practice

  • Shifu, Jade and Ruh Kaan reward precise timing and heavily punish mistakes.
  • Pestilus and Oldur are strong supports but play very differently from a simple healer. They lean on zone control and timing more than raw healing.
  • Destiny and Varesh want long, safe spacing plus good tracking of enemy cooldowns.

Team composition basics

  • 2v2: Melee + Support and Ranged + Support are the classic, stable pairs. Double DPS can snowball but falls apart if the opening fight goes badly.
  • 3v3: A support plus two damage champions is standard. Pair a melee who can lock a target with a ranged champion who can follow up.
  • Always check the enemy draft for counters and dive. If they have two divers, you want peel (knockbacks, roots, shields).

Fighting Fundamentals

Spacing and dodging

  • Stay at the edge of your target's range, not inside it. Ranged champions should never stand still in the middle.
  • Strafe perpendicular to incoming skillshots, and don't walk in a straight line toward an enemy with a charged projectile.
  • Save your mobility skill for dodging a key ability or escaping a CC chain, not for engaging, unless the engage is a guaranteed kill.

Cooldown tracking

  • Watch for the enemy's mobility, counter and cleanse. When one is down, that's your window to commit.
  • Voice callouts like "Space down on Jumong" or "Lucie used her cleanse" win more games than aim.

Focus fire

  • Pick a target and stick to it with your partner. Split damage heals back or gets shielded.
  • Squishy ranged champions and out-of-position supports are the usual focus. A healthy tank eating free damage is a trap.

Orb and pickup control

  • Any health or energy pickups that show up mid-round are free value. Grab them, and deny them when it's safe.
  • If your team is winning the trade, take the Orb. If you're losing, contest it without committing your life. Let them spend time on it while you reset cooldowns.

Ranked and the New Season System

  • Rolling seasons: six months each, starting in September and March. The first reset happened on 2 September 2026 at 08:00 UTC.
  • Leagues: Bronze through Grand Champion, with divisions inside each league. You play placement matches after a reset.
  • Queues: 2v2 and 3v3 ranked, solo or with a premade.
  • Rewards: Titles for the infinite season are being handed out manually. Stunlock has said future seasons may not come with titles, so play for the ladder, not the loot.
  • Population note: With no active development, queue times are longer at off-peak hours. Peak EU and NA evenings are your best bet.

Free-to-Play and Cosmetics

  • The game is free. Champions can be unlocked with in-game currency earned by playing.
  • The All Champions Pack DLC unlocks the whole roster permanently. Stunlock has given it away free during promotions before (for example via an Intel giveaway in November 2021). Other DLC is cosmetic: the Ultimate Fan Pack, the Legendary Loot Pack and the soundtrack.
  • Cosmetics (outfits, weapons, mounts, victory stances) have no gameplay effect.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using mobility to engage, then getting killed with no escape. Your Space ability is usually your life.
  • Hitting into counters. If an enemy braces or glows, stop and wait it out.
  • Wasting energy on EX pokes. Keep enough for a defensive EX or your ultimate when the fight turns.
  • Ignoring the Orb completely, or throwing the round to secure it.
  • Chasing too deep. Following a low-health target into their healer's range is how 1v2s happen.
  • Standing still to cast when you don't have to. Keep moving between abilities.
  • Picking the same battlerites every game. Adapt to the enemy comp.
  • Tilting into more games. Best-of-five matches are long enough that one bad round doesn't lose the set. Reset mentally between rounds.

Advanced Tips

  • Bait cooldowns with movement. Step into an enemy's range for a moment to draw out their mobility or counter, then step back.
  • Hold CC for follow-up. Chain crowd control with your partner, not on top of theirs. Two stuns at once waste one of them.
  • Pre-aim where they'll be, not where they are, especially against predictable escapes.
  • Energy lead is a win condition. Winning early trades and the Orb often means you have your ultimate while they don't. Force the fight in that window.
  • Plan for Sudden Death. Kiting comps should try to finish the round before it. Melee-heavy comps can stall and let the shrinking arena force the fight.
  • Watch replays or streams of old tournament VODs. The balance hasn't changed since 2019, so pro play from that era is still relevant.
  • Mute toxic players quickly. A smaller community means you'll see the same people. Keep comms focused.

FAQ

Is Battlerite dead / are the servers still up? No, the servers are live as of September 2026. Development stopped in 2019, but Stunlock still runs the game and even added rolling ranked seasons in 2026.

When does the ranked season reset? The first rolling season began on 2 September 2026 (08:00 UTC). Seasons last six months, so the next reset is in March 2027, and they continue each September and March after that.

Is Battlerite pay-to-win? No. Paid content is cosmetic or unlocks champions you could earn by playing. The All Champions Pack just saves time.

What's the best champion for beginners? Bakko, Jumong and Lucie are the usual recommendations. They have clear jobs, forgiving kits and teach the fundamentals.

What happened to Battlerite Royale? It was announced in May 2018 as a free mode, then became a separate paid standalone game later that year. It went into maintenance mode alongside the main game in October 2019 and isn't part of this guide.

What is Stunlock working on now? V Rising, which launched in Early Access in May 2022. Battlerite gets only occasional technical maintenance.

Is the balance going to change? Unlikely. Stunlock explicitly said in June 2026 that it would hold off on balance changes, even though the community had asked for some.
