A practical guide to Fatshark's co-op melee slaughterfest: the combat fundamentals that actually keep you alive on Legend, all 20 careers at a glance, gear and hero power, the enemies that wipe teams, and how to progress from Recruit to Cataclysm.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 6.12.1 (September 1, 2026), after the 6.11 weapon balance update (May 2026) and the Feast of Grimnir event return (August 25 – September 6, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Block, push, dodge — then attack. Vermintide is a stamina/positioning game first and a damage game second. Pushing (block + attack) is your panic button.
  • Stick together. Specials (Packmaster, Gutter Runner) target isolated players. Most wipes start with one player straying.
  • Kill specials on sight. Call them out and prioritize them over hordes.
  • Heavy attacks for armour, lights for hordes (mostly). Each weapon's weapon card tells you which attacks cleave and which penetrate armour.
  • Level every hero a bit. Chests and loot drop for the hero you're playing, and each hero has a career that suits a different role.
  • Climb difficulties with your hero power. Veteran → Champion → Legend as your gear power rises and your skills improve.
  • Healing items are shared resources. Don't heal at "some" damage; use temporary health and talents first, and share medkits with teammates who need them more.
  • Look up the ping/tag key and use it. Tagging specials, items and elites is the easiest way to help random teams.

Controls & Combat Fundamentals

Action | Default (PC) | Notes

Light attack | LMB (tap) | Fast, often cleaves hordes

Heavy attack | LMB (hold) | Armour penetration, stagger, single-target

Block | RMB (hold) | Uses stamina shields when hit

Push | Block + LMB | Staggers enemies; costs stamina

Push-attack | While blocking, push and keep holding LMB | A fast follow-up attack after pushing

Dodge | Direction + Space | Sidestep and backstep to avoid overheads

Career skill | F | Charges over time and from damage

Weapon slots | 1 (melee), 2 (ranged) | Mouse wheel also cycles

Items | 3 (healing), 4 (potion), 5 (bomb) |

Check Options → Keybindings for the rest (weapon special, tagging, reload).

Fundamentals that matter

  • Stamina shields show under your crosshair. Running out while blocking means you get staggered and take damage.
  • Dodge counts vary by weapon — lighter weapons dodge more times before losing distance.
  • Headshots are key. Many weapons have huge headshot multipliers.
  • Animation cancelling — you can cancel attack windups with block or weapon swap. Learn this early.
  • Overhead attacks from elites (Chaos Warrior, Mauler, Stormvermin) can't always be blocked safely; dodge or interrupt them.

Heroes & Careers

Each hero has four careers (three base + one premium DLC career). Fatshark's store lists five heroes with three branching base careers each; premium careers are sold separately.

Hero | Careers | Role summary

Markus Kruber | Mercenary, Huntsman, Foot Knight, Grail Knight (DLC) | Horde clear (Merc), sniping/elite killing (Huntsman), tank (FK), heavy damage (GK)

Bardin Goreksson | Ironbreaker, Ranger Veteran, Slayer, Outcast Engineer (DLC) | Tank (IB), ranged/ammo (RV), melee DPS (Slayer), sustained ranged (OE)

Kerillian | Waystalker, Handmaiden, Shade, Sister of the Thorn (DLC) | Ranged sniping (WS), support/dodge (HM), assassin (Shade), control/support (SotT)

Victor Saltzpyre | Witch Hunter Captain, Bounty Hunter, Zealot, Warrior Priest of Sigmar (DLC) | Crit support (WHC), burst ranged (BH), aggressive melee (Zealot), support/tank (WP)

Sienna Fuegonasus | Battle Wizard, Pyromancer, Unchained, Necromancer (DLC) | Mobility/fire (BW), ranged crits (Pyro), tank/melee (Unchained), summoner (Necro)

Beginner picks

  • Foot Knight (Kruber): Very forgiving; a strong defensive career with a charge career skill.
  • Ironbreaker (Bardin): Tanky, great for learning positioning.
  • Handmaiden (Kerillian): Mobile, forgiving dodges, strong support passives.
  • Unchained (Sienna): Lots of overheat management but very tanky.

Talents

Each career unlocks talent rows as you level (up to hero level 35). Talents change play style dramatically; many players swap talents per mission type.

Gear, Hero Power & Crafting

  • Hero Power is your overall power rating. Higher power increases damage and survivability. Gear power caps at 300 per item.
  • Rarity: Plentiful (white), Common (green), Rare (blue), Exotic (orange), Veteran (red), and cosmetic illusions.
  • Properties and traits: Weapons roll two properties (e.g., crit chance, attack speed, power vs specific enemy types) and a trait. Trinkets, charms and necklaces have their own trait pools (for example healing-sharing traits on necklaces).
  • Crafting: Salvage items for materials, re-roll properties/traits, and craft specific items at the forge in the Keep.
  • Chests: You get chests after missions. Loot die, grimoires and tomes increase chest quality.
  • Okri's Challenges: Specific tasks that grant rewards and cosmetics.

Game Modes

Mode | What it is | Best for

Adventure | Campaign missions across multiple acts and DLC maps | Leveling and gear

Chaos Wastes | Roguelite expedition mode with random boons and curses | Variety, co-op fun

Weekly Event | Special event missions (e.g., Feast of Grimnir, A Quiet Drink) | Limited-time rewards

Deeds | Missions with modifiers from Heroic Deeds | Extra rewards

Modded Realm | Mod-supported realm with separate progression | Mods and custom content

Difficulty Ladder

Difficulty | Recommended | Notes

Recruit | New players | Very forgiving

Veteran | Early levels | Basic enemy variety

Champion | Mid hero power | Friendly fire starts to matter

Legend | High hero power | Standard "endgame"

Cataclysm | Endgame | Brutal difficulty; Cataclysm tiers exist for some modes

Move up when you can consistently finish missions with teammates alive and without relying on the host.

Progression Roadmap

  • Hero level 1–10 (Recruit/Veteran): Play the Act 1 missions of the base campaign on Veteran. Learn to block, push and dodge; try all three base careers of your main hero.
  • Level 10–25 (Veteran/Champion): Unlock more talent rows. Start picking up tomes (they take your healing slot) to improve chest quality, and do Okri's Challenges that match what you're already doing.
  • Level 25–35 (Champion): Move to Champion once you can reliably keep the team alive on Veteran. Salvage duplicates at the forge and start crafting the weapons you actually like.
  • Hero power near cap (Legend): Legend is the standard endgame. Expect specials in larger numbers and elites that punish sloppy blocking.
  • Cataclysm and Chaos Wastes: For the veterans — random curses and boons in Chaos Wastes, or Cataclysm for the hardest content.

Rule of thumb: move up a difficulty when your team rarely goes down on the current one, not when your hero power says you're allowed to.

Enemies & Threats

Specials (kill immediately)

Special | Threat | Counter

Gutter Runner | Pounces on isolated players | Stay together, dodge, push it off

Packmaster | Drags a player away | Kill before it hooks; shoot it

Poison Wind Globadier | Area gas | Kill quickly, avoid gas clouds

Ratling Gunner | Suppressive fire | Take cover, shoot it

Warpfire Thrower | Close-range fire | Kill at range; dodge flames

Blightstormer | Tornado that pulls players | Shoot it quickly

Lifeleech | Teleporting drainer | Interrupt; kill quickly

Elites and monsters

  • Stormvermin, Chaos Warriors, Maulers, Plague Monks, Bestigors, Savages: Elite enemies; block and dodge their overheads.
  • Monsters: Rat Ogre, Stormfiend, Chaos Spawn, Bile Troll, Minotaur. Spread out, stagger, and dodge.

2026 Balance Notes

  • Patch 6.11.0 (May 19, 2026): A major weapon balance update. One-handed weapons got better dodge capabilities and in some cases reduced movement penalties while attacking. Axe-like weapons got better cleave and single-target damage.
  • Hotfix 6.11.1 (May 25): Elven Axe push attack and War Pick crits vs super armour buffs.
  • Hotfix 6.11.2 (June 2): Huntsman's Longbow no longer automatically zooms; players can press Weapon Special while aiming to zoom.
  • Patch 6.12.0 (August 25): Feast of Grimnir event returned; Troll Chief uses Lord damage reduction and gained ~15% more health on Cataclysm 3.
  • Hotfix 6.12.1 (September 1): Fixed being unable to destroy heroic deeds and Modded Realm backend errors.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running ahead. Isolated players get pounced and hooked.
  • Ignoring specials. Hordes are rarely what wipes teams.
  • Not blocking. Attacking without watching your stamina is lethal.
  • Healing at low damage. Waste of resources.
  • Picking up grimoires recklessly. They reduce max health for the whole team.
  • Fighting monsters in narrow chokepoints without stagger.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn push-attacks for fast crowd control.
  • Save your career skill for emergencies (e.g., saving a teammate or clearing specials).
  • Use temporary health talents to sustain yourself on Legend+.
  • Communicate. Tag specials and call out monsters.
  • Stack stagger. Many talents and weapons deal extra damage to staggered enemies.
  • Revisit weapons after 6.11. Several previously underused one-handers and axes are now much more viable.
