Quick Start

  • The game is free to download and a large amount of early content is free. Later regions and expansions must be bought, or unlocked via VIP (quest packs only, see below).
  • Earn LOTRO Points by doing deeds. Many deeds (exploration, slayer, lore) award LOTRO Points, the store currency. Free players can unlock quest packs this way over time.
  • Pick a class you enjoy soloing. Most of the leveling game is solo questing. Every class can solo, but some (Hunter, Champion, Lore-master, Captain, Warden once learned) feel smoother early.
  • Follow the Epic Story. The epic quest line (Volumes and Books) leads you through the main zones and gives some of the best rewards and cutscenes.
  • Get a crafting vocation early. Crafting is levelled alongside questing and saves money on gear, food and potions.
  • Travel smart. Use stable-masters, milestones and the map-based swift travel. Set your milestone at the hub you're questing out of.
  • Join a kinship. Kinships (guilds) make group content, crafting and new-player questions much easier.
  • Don't panic about gear while leveling. Quest rewards and occasional instance drops carry you. Endgame gear is a separate conversation.
  • Read your class traits. Every class has three trait trees (specializations). Your chosen tree changes your role completely.
  • Consider a Legendary World only if you're VIP. Angmar and Mordor are VIP-only progression servers that are nearing their final phase (cap 140 in January 2027).

Free-to-Play, Premium and VIP

Account type | What you get

Free-to-play | Early zones and the base game's free areas, limited character slots, gold cap, fewer bag and bank slots, some convenience features locked

Premium | Anyone who has ever bought LOTRO Points or content; relaxed restrictions

VIP (subscription) | All quest packs included while subscribed, monthly LOTRO Points stipend, no gold cap, more slots, access to Legendary Worlds

Key detail: VIP does not include expansions such as Mordor, Minas Morgul, Fate of Gundabad, Corsairs of Umbar, Legacy of Morgoth or Kingdoms of Harad. Expansions are bought separately (and go on sale often). Anything you buy with LOTRO Points is permanent.

Races and Classes

Races

Man, Elf, High Elf, Dwarf, Stout-axe Dwarf, Hobbit, River Hobbit and Beorning. Race affects starting area, racial traits and which classes you can pick (for example, Beornings can only be the Beorning class). Race choice is mostly cosmetic and story flavor at endgame.

Classes

LOTRO has 12 player classes (plus separate Monster Play classes in PvMP).

Class | Primary role(s) | Notes

Burglar | Melee DPS, debuffs | Stealth, crowd control, fellowship maneuvers

Captain | Support, healing, melee | Buffs the group, has a Herald/Standard-bearer pet

Champion | Melee DPS, some tanking | Strong area damage, simple to start

Guardian | Tank | Heavy armor, shield, the classic tank

Hunter | Ranged DPS | High damage, fast travel skills across the map

Lore-master | Ranged support, CC | Pets, debuffs, power restoration

Minstrel | Healer, ranged DPS | The main dedicated healer

Rune-keeper | Healer or caster DPS | Attunement mechanic swings between healing and damage

Warden | Tank, melee DPS | Gambit system builds combos; very strong once learned

Beorning | Tank, DPS, healer | Swaps between man and bear form

Brawler | Melee DPS, tank | Unarmed fighter added in 2021

Mariner | Melee DPS | Balance-based class added in 2023 with Corsairs of Umbar

Traits: Each class has three trait trees (for example, a tanking, a DPS and a utility tree). Your main tree gives your role; you can have multiple builds saved and swap between them out of combat. Also slot Virtues, which are stat bonuses levelled by completing deeds and virtue-granting activities.

Leveling Path

  • Starter zone and Ered Luin/The Shire/Bree-land (depending on race). Do the introduction and early Epic Story.
  • Bree-land to the Lone-lands, North Downs, Trollshaws and onwards. Follow the Epic Story's recommended levels.
  • Mines of Moria (Moria expansion) and Lothlórien.
  • Mirkwood, Enedwaith, Dunland, Isengard.
  • Rohan and Helm's Deep.
  • Gondor, Minas Tirith, Pelennor Fields.
  • Mordor and later expansions (Minas Morgul, Fate of Gundabad, Corsairs of Umbar, Legacy of Morgoth, Kingdoms of Harad) up to 160.

Tips:

  • You will out-level zones. That's normal. Skip side quests that don't interest you and follow the Epic Story or zone quests you like.
  • Skirmishes, missions and instances are good alternatives when questing gets repetitive; they scale and give useful rewards.
  • Consider the store's level boosts and accelerators only if you already know the old content. The early game is where much of the classic LOTRO atmosphere is.
  • Recently, Pelennor instance cluster gear was adjusted (Update 49.2) so armor drops can be disenchanted into Battle of Pelennor Armour Tokens and bartered for level 105 pieces, including Brawler and Mariner gear.

Core Systems

Legendary Items

Your class weapon and class item are Legendary Items. They gain their own experience, have legacies (bonus stats) and can be imbued so they scale with you. The seasonal Legendary Items Reward Track (currently the 19th track, September 2 to December 2, 2026) hands out cosmetics, housing decor and pets for playing normally.

Virtues

Virtues are levelled with Virtue XP from deeds and other sources. Slot the ones your class and role need. At endgame they are a meaningful stat source, so don't skip deeds entirely.

Crafting

You pick a vocation, which bundles three professions:

Vocation | Professions

Armsman | Weaponsmith, Prospector, Woodworker

Armourer | Metalsmith, Prospector, Tailor

Explorer | Tailor, Forester, Prospector

Historian | Scholar, Farmer, Weaponsmith

Tinker | Jeweller, Prospector, Cook

Woodsman | Woodworker, Forester, Farmer

Yeoman | Cook, Farmer, Tailor

Pick the one that makes your own gear or consumables. Cooks and Scholars supply food and potions, which you'll always need.

Housing

Buy a house in one of the neighborhood areas for decoration, storage and a travel point. Rivendell Housing (opened April 30, 2026) is the newest option.

Hobbies and festivals

Fishing and other hobbies, plus seasonal festivals (Spring, Midsummer, Farmers Faire, Harvestmath, Yuletide, anniversary) give cosmetics, mounts and housing items.

Group and Endgame Content

  • Instances: 3 and 6 player dungeons across many tiers. Tier 2 and Tier 3 add harder mechanics for better rewards.
  • Raids: 12-player content. The newest raid is The Folly of Nagakhêdi (March 2026). On the Legendary Worlds, the older raid The Abyss of Mordath opens at T1 and T2 on September 17, 2026.
  • Missions and Delvings: Short, repeatable scaled content.
  • Skirmishes: Scalable battles you can run solo with a soldier companion or with a group.
  • Ettenmoors (PvMP): Free Peoples versus Monster Players. Update 49 overhauled artifact capture (seize the enemy artifact from Ost Ringdyr, with a 2-minute drop timer) and moved the PvMP relics into The Delving of Frór beneath the Ettenmoors (holding both relics doubles their buffs). Glory and Infamy from large-raid kills was reduced to encourage smaller groups.

Monster Play

At level 10 you can create a Monster Player character for the Ettenmoors. Update 49 added the Angmarim Sorceress, which must be purchased in the LOTRO Store. Patches 49.1 to 49.4 made several balance changes to it (Umbral Spout, Ignite synergy stacking and Dread Summons).

Legendary Worlds (Angmar and Mordor)

  • VIP-only servers that replay the game from the start with a staged level cap.
  • Current and planned caps: 115 (September 9, 2026), 120 (around November 11), 130 with Minas Morgul, War of Three Peaks and Blood of Azog (around December 16), and 140 with Gundabad and King's Gondor East (around January 13, 2027).
  • The January 2027 update is the final one for these worlds; free transfers to regular worlds run until March 30, 2027.
  • The seventh through ninth Ringwraiths of the Veil of the Nine experience became available with the September 9 update.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying VIP expecting expansions to be included. They're not; VIP covers quest packs only.
  • Ignoring deeds. They give LOTRO Points, Virtue XP and titles.
  • Running out of bag space. Bags fill quickly; learn to use the vault and shared storage, and sell or deconstruct junk.
  • Playing a tank or healer solo with the wrong trait tree. Swap to your DPS tree for questing.
  • Not upgrading your Legendary Items. They're a big part of your power.
  • Grinding every old zone to 100%. You'll out-level everything. Move on when quests go grey.
  • Assuming all servers are the same. Legendary Worlds have different rules and caps.

Advanced Tips

  • Set a second milestone (via the store or class skills) so you can hop between your house or kinship hall and your questing hub.
  • Hunters and Wardens have travel skills to key hubs; learn them.
  • Watch the Reward Track timers. Each track runs about three months; play regularly to finish it before it ends.
  • Keep old-content accelerators for when you need them. XP and Virtue accelerators are often in bundles; don't burn them at level 20.
  • Stack festivals. Festival tokens can buy cosmetic and mount rewards that are otherwise store-only.
  • Check the Community Loot List for titles and cosmetics being added in future updates.
