A roguelite action guide for SouthPAW Games' skull-swapping platformer: how a run is structured, how skulls, items, Inscriptions and Quintessences fit together, which permanent upgrades to buy first, and how to handle the chapter bosses and the post-game.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Release 1.9.1 (June 2024) plus the Mythology Pack DLC. The game is feature-complete; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- You carry two skulls. Swap between them in combat. Swapping often triggers a swap effect, so treat it as an attack, not just a loadout change.
- Spend Dark Quartz at the Witch every time you return to the castle. Permanent upgrades (Dark Abilities) are what make early runs winnable.
- Build around Inscriptions. Items carry Inscription tags; collecting enough of one tag activates bonuses. A focused set beats a pile of random items.
- Pick doors deliberately. Room exits show what reward is behind them. Choose skulls early, items to build synergy, gold when a shop is coming up.
- Grab a Quintessence and use it on cooldown. It's a free extra ability.
- Learn to dash well. Good dashing and knowing boss patterns matter more than stats.
- Upgrade skulls you like. Rarity upgrades add stronger skills and passives.
- Die and retry. Early deaths still earn Dark Quartz toward permanent power.
How a Run Works
- Start in the ruined Demon King's Castle as Little Bone, the default skull.
- Push through chapter areas made of procedurally arranged rooms. Each room's exit tells you the reward type ahead.
- Fight mini-bosses (including the Adventurers, a party of hero hunters), buy from shops, and assemble a build.
- Beat each chapter's boss, corrupted by Dark Quartz, to move on.
- On death you return to the castle and keep your Dark Quartz for permanent upgrades.
The chapters
Chapter | Boss
1 | Yggdrasil, the Elder Ent
2 | Leiana, commander of the knights
3 | The Chimera, in the Dark Lab
4 | The leader of the church
5 | The First Hero
After the main story there is more: the Dark Mirror post-game content, which has its own Black Market, and boss fights such as "Skul, The Dark Skeleton" and "Alexander, The Emperor of Carleon" (both adjusted in the v1.08.01.3 patch, November 2023). The 1.8.0 update (November 2023) that shipped alongside the Mythology Pack caused crashes tied to the Black Market's Mystery Inscription Box; hotfix 1.8.1 disabled that box temporarily.
Skulls
Types and rarity
Every skull has a type and a rarity:
Type | Feel
Power | Slow, heavy hits, high damage per swing
Speed | Fast combos, mobility; the Dominator is a Legendary Speed skull
Balance | In-between; flexible
Rarity runs Common, Rare, Unique, Legendary. Higher rarity skulls have stronger skills and passives. You can upgrade a skull's rarity, and duplicates or unwanted skulls can be broken down into bone fragments used for upgrades.
Skills and swapping
- Each skull has its own basic attack, skills and passive.
- The swap is on a cooldown and often triggers a special attack or buff. Swapping right after using skills lets you use two skulls' worth of skills back to back.
- Pair skulls that cover each other: a fast skull with a slow burst skull, or a ranged skull with a melee one.
Notable skulls
Named in official patch notes and DLC:
- Dominator (Legendary, Speed; added in 1.9.0): wields a living Evil Sword that leaves "Scars" in the air, absorbs vital energy, and can awaken the sword.
- Unknown King (Legendary; Mythology Pack).
- Awakeable skulls (Mythology Pack): Ascetic, Officer, Slave, Viking.
- Others adjusted in 1.9.0: Skeleton-Pike, Mummy, Dark Paladin (basic combo became Magic damage; bigger Shield from consuming darkness).
- Gambler: its chip count now shows as a buff icon with an aura, since patch 1.08.01.3.
Achievements also reference skulls like the Werewolf and the Demon King Castle Gargoyle.
Items, Inscriptions and Quintessences
Items and Inscriptions
- Items give stats and effects, and each carries Inscriptions (synergy tags). Examples from official notes include Heritage, Chase, Bone and Mystery (the Mythology Pack's new Inscription).
- Reaching Inscription thresholds activates set bonuses. Plan around two strong Inscriptions instead of spreading across many.
- You can hold a limited number of items, so swap and dismantle freely.
Recent item buffs (1.9.1, June 2024)
Item | Change
Berserker's Gauntlet | Attack-speed bonus maxes out at 20% HP instead of 15%
Dark Berserker's Gauntlets | Same threshold change; max attack speed 60% to 70%
Veteran Warrior's Gloves | Cooldown 5s to 4s; more damage
Great Sage's Time | Physical attack per skill on cooldown 30% to 35%
Absolute Mithril Gear | Max physical attack bonus 40% to 50%
Sylphid Wings | Inscription changed from Heritage to Chase
Infinite Bone | Cooldown reset chance 30% to 40%
Voodoo Doll | Health recovered on surviving death 40 to 50
Doomsday | Cooldown reduction on Apocalypse 5s to 11s
Veiled Mask | Crit chance penalty 30% to 20%
Several of these were rare, hard-to-get items. They're worth grabbing when you see them.
Quintessences
A Quintessence is an extra active ability, often a summon or burst effect. Keep one equipped at all times and use it on cooldown, especially during boss damage windows.
Permanent Progression
- Dark Quartz drops from enemies and bosses and persists through death.
- Spend it with the Witch in the castle on Dark Abilities: permanent boosts to damage, health and utility.
- Priority: health and damage first, then quality-of-life boosts.
- Rescuing and restoring castle NPCs over time adds services. Several achievements track this, such as "Castle Restoration Plans".
Boss Tips
- General: stay mobile, dash away from big attacks, and save your strongest skill combo plus Quintessence for the moment the boss is exposed.
- Yggdrasil (Chapter 1): a good first boss for learning. Stay out of the way of its big arm attacks and punish the openings between them.
- Leiana (Chapter 2): a fast, aggressive fight. Bring a skull with good mobility and learn the charge patterns.
- Chimera (Chapter 3): big area attacks. Watch the arena and dash out of zones early.
- The First Hero (Chapter 5): a long, multi-phase finale that tests everything. Go in with a coherent Inscription build and a full-health skull pair.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Picking every door for gold. Early skull and item doors shape the run more.
- Keeping two slow Power skulls. You need at least one skull that can escape.
- Ignoring the swap. Swapping is damage and invulnerability, not just a menu action.
- Not spending Dark Quartz between runs.
- Hoarding weak items instead of dismantling toward a focused Inscription set.
- Face-tanking bosses. Every boss attack has a tell, so dodge it.
Advanced Tips
- Cooldown loops: items like Infinite Bone and Great Sage's Time reward builds that keep skills cycling. Combine them with skulls whose power is in their skills.
- Swap-cancel combos: use a skill, swap, use the other skull's skills, swap back as the first comes off cooldown.
- Magic vs physical: items boost either physical or magic attack. Check which damage type your skulls deal (Dark Paladin's basic combo, for example, is Magic after 1.9.0) and build to match.
- Legendary hunting: don't reroll a solid run chasing a Legendary skull. A well-upgraded Rare or Unique with the right items beats a random Legendary.
- Mythology Pack: the awakeable skulls change their kit when awakened, so they're strong build centrepieces.
