A practical guide to Quake Live in 2026: which modes still have players, weapons and items, movement tech, item control in Duel and TDM, settings, and how to find games on the community-run servers.

Researched September 2026 — current as of client/server update v1069 (June 7, 2016), the last official patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status in 2026

Quake Live is a finished game with a surviving community. Key history (per Wikipedia and Steam news):

Date | Event

Feb 24, 2009 | Open beta (announced in 2007 as "Quake Zero")

Aug 6, 2010 | Full browser-based launch (free, ad-supported, later with premium subscriptions)

Aug 27, 2014 | Update adds loadouts in some game types, a "continuous bunny hop" option and the Heavy Machine Gun

Sep 17, 2014 | Standalone Steam release

Oct 27-28, 2015 | Free play and subscriptions end; the game becomes a one-time purchase, and a Steamworks update resets all player stats

Apr-Jun 2016 | Updates v1068 and v1069 — the last official patches

Aug 4-7, 2016 | QuakeCon 2016 Quake Live Duel Masters Championship

Servers are community-hosted. Most active servers run Clan Arena, with Duel, CTF, TDM, and FFA available depending on region and time of day.

Quick Start

  • Start with Clan Arena (CA). Everyone spawns with full weapons and armor, rounds are short, and it's where most players are.
  • Learn strafe jumping. Movement is the core skill in Quake; you can't compete without it.
  • Weapon switching speed matters. Bind weapons to individual keys instead of scrolling.
  • Stack health and armor. Picking up armor and Mega Health is how you win fights before they start.
  • Use the Rocket Launcher's splash. Aim at feet and walls, not at bodies in the air.
  • Hitscan for mid-air targets. Railgun and Lightning Gun excel when enemies are jumping.
  • Turn off mouse acceleration and set a comfortable sensitivity.
  • Join the community Discord to find pickup games and active servers.

Game Modes

Mode | Description | Good for

Clan Arena | Team rounds, full loadout, no item pickups | Aim and team fights

Duel | 1v1, item control | Pure skill; the classic competitive mode

Free-for-All | Everyone vs everyone | Warm-up and aim

Team Deathmatch | Team item control | Coordination

Capture the Flag | Classic CTF | Movement and teamwork

Freeze Tag | Frozen players can be thawed by teammates | Casual team play

Instagib / InstaCTF | One-shot railguns | Aim practice

Race | Movement time trials | Learning strafe jumping

Others | Domination, Attack & Defend, Harvester, Red Rover, 1-Flag CTF | Variety

Weapons

Weapon | Type | Best use

Gauntlet | Melee | Desperation, humiliation kills

Machine Gun | Hitscan | Finishing weak enemies

Heavy Machine Gun | Hitscan | Stronger MG (in some rulesets/loadouts)

Shotgun | Hitscan spread | Close-range burst

Grenade Launcher | Projectile | Area denial, corners

Rocket Launcher | Projectile, splash | The workhorse; direct hits and splash

Lightning Gun | Hitscan beam | Mid-range tracking; huge DPS

Railgun | Hitscan | Long range, slow reload

Plasma Gun | Projectile | Spam in corridors, plasma climbing

Nailgun | Projectile | Mid-range spread (Team Arena weapon)

Chaingun | Hitscan | High DPS with spin-up

Proximity Mine Launcher | Mines | Trap objectives

BFG10K | Projectile | Rare, powerful

Tip: in Clan Arena, Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun, and Railgun decide most fights; switch between them based on distance.

Weapon-by-weapon habits

  • Rocket Launcher: aim at the floor near an enemy's feet when they're grounded; splash damages and knocks them into the air, where you can follow up with a rail or LG. Direct hits are for players who are already airborne and predictable.
  • Lightning Gun: a continuous beam, so accuracy is about smooth tracking rather than flicks. Keep the crosshair centred on the target's body while strafing opposite to them so their relative movement slows down.
  • Railgun: one big shot with a long reload. Pre-aim where the enemy is about to appear, fire, then move or switch to a faster weapon while it reloads. Don't rail-and-stand-still.
  • Shotgun: strong at point-blank range, weak beyond it. It's a switch-to weapon for a close finisher, not a main weapon.
  • Grenade Launcher: bounce grenades around corners and onto items and doorways you expect your opponent to use. Great for denying Mega Health or armor spawns.
  • Plasma Gun: spam doorways and corridors, and use it to climb walls (see Movement).
  • Machine Gun / Heavy Machine Gun: chip damage and finishing low-health players at range when you have nothing better.
  • Team Arena weapons (Nailgun, Chaingun, Proximity Mine Launcher) only appear in some modes and maps, so learn them when a server uses them.

Some modes and servers also enable a grappling hook (the June 2016 v1069 patch fixed a grapple bug), and servers can hand out loadouts instead of relying on map pickups.

Items

  • Mega Health — large health boost, decays over time above 100.
  • Red Armor — the biggest armor pickup; controls Duel maps.
  • Yellow Armor — mid armor.
  • Green Armor — small armor.
  • Armor shards and health bubbles — small boosts.
  • Powerups (TDM/CTF/FFA): Quad Damage, Battle Suit, Regeneration, Haste, Invisibility.

Movement

Strafe jumping is holding forward + strafe while turning the mouse in the direction of the strafe and jumping repeatedly, gaining speed with each jump.

  • Hold W and D (or A).
  • Jump as soon as you land (bunny-hop timing).
  • Move the mouse smoothly in the strafe direction.
  • Alternate direction (A/D) to steer.

Other tech:

  • Circle jump — a start-of-run jump for extra speed.
  • Rocket jump — fire a rocket at your feet while jumping; costs health but reaches high ledges.
  • Plasma climb — shoot plasma at a wall while pressing into it to climb.
  • Crouch slide and air control — depending on the server's physics ruleset, some servers use a more forgiving movement style.

Practise movement in Race mode and on movement maps.

Duel: Item Control

Duel is all about item timing: whoever controls Red Armor and Mega Health usually wins.

  • Know the map. Learn where Red Armor, Yellow Armor, and Mega Health spawn and the fastest routes between them.
  • Time the items. When you or your opponent takes an item, note the in-game clock and add its respawn time.
  • Stack. Get to 200 health/armor before engaging.
  • Control, don't chase. If you have the stack, hold the item areas; make your opponent come to you.
  • Listen. Sounds of item pickups and jump pads reveal where your opponent is.

Classic duel maps: Aerowalk, Blood Run, Furious Heights, Toxicity, Lost World, Sinister, Campgrounds, Hektik — the specific pool varies by server.

Learning a new duel map

  • Walk it alone first. Create a private match or start a local server, and note every armor, Mega Health and weapon spawn.
  • Learn the fastest route between the two or three key items, including jump pads, teleporters and any trick jumps.
  • Pick one "home" item (usually Red Armor or Mega) and learn two escape routes from it.
  • Practise timing out loud. Say the respawn time each time you pick up a major item until it becomes a habit. Respawn times depend on the server's ruleset, so check the item timer your server uses rather than memorising numbers from another game.
  • Watch a demo of a strong player on that map and copy their routes before inventing your own.

Spawns and powerups after the 2016 patches

The final patches changed a few timing details that matter in TDM and CTF: v1068 stopped keys spawning at match start, and v1069 fixed powerups and keys spawning before their minimum time at map start. If you learned timings on an older build, re-check them.

Team Modes

  • Clan Arena: stay with teammates, trade damage, and focus the weakest enemy. Rounds are short; don't take unnecessary duels.
  • TDM: assign roles (armor control, powerup control) and call item timings.
  • CTF: fast flag carriers with support; use movement tech to get away with the flag.

Settings and Config

  • Sensitivity: find a comfortable 360-degree distance; lower sensitivity helps precision.
  • Field of view: use a wider FOV for awareness (the cvar is cg_fov).
  • Frame rate: set com_maxfps to a stable high value your PC can hold.
  • Mouse acceleration: off.
  • Enemy models and colors: force bright enemy models/colors in the options for visibility.
  • Weapon binds: bind each weapon to a key; avoid scrolling.
  • Crosshair: choose a simple crosshair; v1068 fixed alignment of crosshairs 11 and 13.
  • Hit sounds: turn on hit sounds for feedback.

A Practice Routine That Works

Time | Drill | Why

5-10 min | Race mode or a movement map: strafe jumps, circle jumps, rocket jumps | Movement is the foundation of everything else

10 min | Instagib or FFA warm-up | Wakes up your aim and reactions

10 min | LG tracking in FFA, using only the Lightning Gun | Tracking is the hardest aim skill to build and the fastest to fade

Main session | Clan Arena or Duel | Real games with pressure

After | Watch one of your own demos | You'll spot bad positioning you never notice live

Keep your sensitivity the same between sessions. Changing it often resets your muscle memory, which undoes the point of practice.

Finding Games

  • Server browser: sort by mode and ping; many servers run the community "minqlx" admin framework with balancing and stats plugins.
  • Stats and ratings: community sites track ratings for balance (e.g. QLStats).
  • Discord: Bethesda launched an official Quake Live Discord in May 2016; community Discords organise pickups.
  • Workshop: Quake Live supports Steam Workshop content (maps, and since v1069, alternate death effects via server-side Workshop support).
  • Host your own: the dedicated server is available for hosting private games. Keep it on the current version: the final patches were client/server-incompatible, and servers on older versions are de-listed from the browser.
  • Bad userinfo kicks: if you're kicked for invalid userinfo, that's the v1068 "sarge bug" workaround. Server admins can tune it with g_kickBadUserInfo.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Standing still. In Quake, movement is defense.
  • Ignoring items. Fighting without armor is losing.
  • Rockets at mid-air targets. Use hitscan.
  • Scroll-wheel switching. Too slow.
  • Chasing a stronger stack. Retreat and pick up items.
  • Tunnel vision. Listen to footsteps and item pickup sounds.
  • Playing only FFA. Duel and CA teach more.

Advanced Tips

  • Predict, don't react: aim rockets where the enemy will be, especially on landing.
  • Lightning Gun tracking: practise smooth tracking; it's the highest-skill hitscan.
  • Rail timing: fire as soon as the reload completes; don't waste the shot.
  • Item timing chains: track multiple items at once in Duel.
  • Rocket jumps for positioning, not just for reaching ledges.
  • Use splash for knockback to push enemies off ledges or away from items.
  • Watch demos of top players to learn routes and timings.
  • Train aim in Instagib and with aim trainers.
