A current guide to Blizzard's 5v5 hero shooter after the 2026 rebrand: roles and the new subrole passives, Perks, the Reign of Talon seasons, ranked, and practical tips for climbing.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Reign of Talon Season 4: Heroes of Busan (launched August 11, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's called "Overwatch" again. Blizzard dropped the "2" in February 2026 and moved to year-long story arcs of six seasons. The Steam listing and your install are the same game.
  • Teams are 5v5: one Tank, two Damage, two Support in Role Queue.
  • Every role now has subroles with their own passive (Bruiser, Sharpshooter, Medic and so on). Know yours; see the table below.
  • Perks upgrade your hero mid-match. You pick a Minor Perk first, then a Major Perk later in the match. Choose based on the fight you're having, not habit.
  • Stay with your team. Fights are won by the team that has more players alive; "staggering" into a fight one at a time is the #1 low-rank loss cause.
  • Swap heroes when it's not working. Counter-swapping is core to Overwatch.
  • The newest hero is D.Mon (Tank), added in Season 4.
  • Competitive resets at the start of each season; do your placement games when you're warmed up.

Roles and Subroles

Season 1 of 2026 added subroles. Each gives a passive on top of the role passive. The subrole names below are official; passive wording and hero assignments are summarized and can be retuned in balance patches, so confirm on the Hero Select screen, which shows each hero's subrole.

Tank

Subrole | Passive | Heroes

Bruiser | Reduced critical damage received; move faster at critical health | Mauga, Orisa, Roadhog, Zarya

Initiator | Staying airborne lightly heals you | D.Va, Doomfist, Winston, Wrecking Ball

Stalwart | Reduced knockbacks and slows received | Domina, Hazard, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Sigma

D.Mon (Season 4) is a mobile MEKA tank; check her subrole on the in-game hero card.

Damage

Subrole | Passive | Heroes

Sharpshooter | Critical hits reduce movement ability cooldowns | Ashe, Cassidy, Hanzo, Sojourn, Widowmaker

Flanker | Health packs restore more health | Anran, Genji, Reaper, Tracer, Vendetta, Venture

Specialist | Eliminations briefly increase reload speed | Bastion, Emre, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Torbjorn

Recon | After damaging enemies, see those below half health through walls | Echo, Freja, Pharah, Sombra

Support

Subrole | Passive | Heroes

Tactician | Excess ultimate charge carries over after you ult | Ana, Baptiste, Jetpack Cat, Lucio, Zenyatta

Medic | Healing allies with your weapon also heals you | Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy, Moira

Survivor | Using a movement ability activates passive health regen | Brigitte, Illari, Juno, Mizuki, Wuyang

Heroes added after Season 1 (one per season, e.g. Shion in Season 3 and D.Mon in Season 4) slot into these subroles too; the hero select screen shows each hero's subrole.

2026: Reign of Talon

  • Season 1 (February 10, 2026) launched the Reign of Talon arc with five new heroes at once: Domina (Tank, Vishkar heiress with segmented hard-light barriers), Emre (Damage, burst rifle and a life-stealing pistol), Anran (Damage, fire fans and a rushing ability), Mizuki (Support, a spirit glaive and a chain that tethers enemies) and Jetpack Cat (Support, a flying healer that can tow allies). It also launched subroles and competitive title rarity, with dynamic titles for Top 500 players.
  • One new hero per season follows, for ten new heroes across the year.
  • Season 2 (April 14, 2026) arrived alongside the native Nintendo Switch 2 version.
  • Season 3: Into the Tiger's Den started June 16 and added Shion (Damage), the Omnic head of the Hashimoto Clan, with three-round dual pistols, dashes and a motorcycle she can launch at enemies. It also added Neon Junction, a Hybrid map set in Tokyo, and Hero Select started showing each hero's role and subrole on screen.
  • Season 4: Heroes of Busan launched August 11, 2026 and is live now. The arc is planned for six seasons in 2026, with a new narrative cycle in 2027.

Season 4: Heroes of Busan

  • D.Mon (Tank): Former pro gamer Yuna Lee, piloting her MEKA "Beast." Her kit, per Blizzard's announcement:

Ability | What it does

Plasma Saber | Cuts through close-range enemies

Fusion Repeater | Trades close-range pressure for more reach

Power Barrier | A placed barrier to protect teammates

Propulsors | Launch yourself across the map

Limit Break (Ultimate) | Helps your entire team push forward; read the exact numbers on the hero card

  • Map updates: Busan shows battle damage; Paraíso got decorations, new routes around Points A and B and a revamped Clube Sinestesia (music, dance floor, DJ booth); Eichenwalde gained new ways to break through the first chokepoint, including high-ground access through a piano shop. Relearn the first-point attack routes.
  • Battle Pass rework: After an intro track you choose which Legendary skin to pursue first. Premium owners get one Tier Hack per season to swap an eligible Legendary for one from a curated pool of older skins. Unvaulted Passes, which give permanent catch-up access to selected past Battle Pass rewards, were planned for the Season 4 midcycle but Blizzard pushed them to the start of Season 5 for more testing.
  • Team Drives: A limited competitive-style mode that keeps matched teammates grouped for the next matches (ran September 4-6).
  • In-combat feedback: Team Status Indicator above the kill feed (living teammates vs. opponents), a Tank "Protect" stat, multi-kill icons, clearer healing visuals and damage contribution tracking.
  • Events so far this season: Shooting Star: My MEKA Mania (August 11-31), the World Cup Cheer Rally (September 1-14) and BlizzCon (September 12-13) with the Overwatch World Cup finals. All have ended; check the in-game Events tab for what's next.

Stadium

Stadium launched in Season 16 (April 2025): a best-of-seven, round-based mode where you buy Powers and Items between rounds, and you can play in third-person view. It's still active. Season 1 of 2026 restructured Power rounds to a 1/2/4/6 pattern for faster matches, added Vendetta, and added a Hero Builder with recommended builds and restructured Power rounds, and Season 3 refreshed nearly the whole Stadium roster (big reworks for Hazard, Tracer, Kiriko, Sojourn and Doomfist), removed ranked grouping restrictions and added Oasis University. It's a good place to learn heroes with builds alongside Quick Play/Competitive.

Perks

  • Perks arrived in Season 15 (February 2025) and modify existing abilities rather than adding new buttons.
  • Each hero has two Minor Perks and two Major Perks. Minor perks subtly tweak the kit; Major perks are bolder upgrades, some of which counter specific enemy picks. You pick one Minor early in the match and one Major later as you level up in-match.
  • Perks are shown on the hero gallery; read both options before the match so you're not deciding mid-fight.
  • Rule of thumb: take the perk that fixes your current problem (sustain if you're getting dove, damage/utility if you're winning).

Game Modes

Mode | Objective

Control | Best of three rounds, capture and hold a point

Escort | Push a payload through checkpoints

Hybrid | Capture a point, then escort a payload

Push | Escort a robot pushing a barricade in either direction

Flashpoint | Capture several points that activate across a large map

Clash | Capture points along a line; tug-of-war

Competitive

  • Ranks: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, Champion, then Top 500. Each tier has five divisions.
  • Reset: Competitive resets at each season start; expect a few games of volatility.
  • Role Queue vs. Open Queue: Role Queue locks one Tank, two Damage, two Support; Open Queue doesn't.
  • Diamond+ rewards: Seasonal competitive cosmetics (Season 1's included a Crimson Wolf weapon skin and Doomfist skin).

Beginner-Friendly Heroes

These long-standing heroes have forgiving kits and teach the fundamentals of their role. Numbers change with patches, so this is about playstyle, not tier lists.

Role | Hero | Why start here

Tank | Reinhardt | Barrier Field teaches you to protect your team and read space

Tank | Orisa | Durable and self-sufficient; forgiving if you make positioning mistakes

Damage | Soldier: 76 | Hitscan rifle, sprint and Biotic Field for self-healing; good aim practice

Damage | Cassidy | Rewards steady aim; Sharpshooter passive rewards headshots

Support | Mercy | Teaches positioning and target priority; Resurrect wins fights

Support | Ana | Sleep Dart and Biotic Grenade (which blocks enemy healing) are among the strongest tools in the game once your aim improves

Once one hero feels comfortable, learn a second in the same role that covers a different situation (a dive hero and a brawl hero, or a burst healer and a utility support). That's the minimum pool for Competitive, where counter-swaps are expected.

Counter-swap basics

  • Anti-heal wins sustain fights. Ana's Biotic Grenade stops a target from being healed; save it for the enemy tank or a big defensive ultimate.
  • Dive heroes punish immobile backlines. If your supports keep dying to Winston, Wrecking Ball or D.Va, pick heroes with self-peel (Brigitte, Kiriko) or let your Damage players guard them.
  • Barrier tanks struggle against spread-out enemies. Flank angles and high ground beat a single frontal shield.
  • Subroles are a quick read. Enemy team full of Initiators and Flankers? Expect dive. Full of Stalwarts and Sharpshooters? Expect a poke/brawl front line.

Positioning and Fundamentals

Tank

  • You're the team's cover and pace-setter. Take space when your supports are ready, and back off when resources (barriers, cooldowns) are down.
  • Don't dive alone as Winston/D.Va/D.Mon; dive when your Damage heroes can follow.
  • Counter-swap wisely. Tanks are the most swap-sensitive role; a counter tank often decides the match.

Damage

  • Shoot the enemy supports if you can safely reach them. A dead support loses the fight.
  • Take off-angles; don't stand in the same corridor as your tank.
  • Health packs matter more for Flankers because of their passive.

Support

  • Position with cover and escape routes. You're the enemy's first target.
  • Save key cooldowns (Suzu, Immortality Field, Sleep Dart) for enemy ults or dives.
  • Don't heal-bot. Deal damage when your team is healthy.

Settings Worth Changing

Setting | Recommendation

Field of view | 103 (max) on PC

Mouse sensitivity | Low-to-medium; consistency matters more than the number

Crosshair | Small, contrasting color (green/cyan)

Enemy UI color | High contrast

Reduce buffering | On

Graphics | Low/Medium for FPS; turn off motion blur-like effects

NVIDIA Reflex / low latency | On

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Staggering into a lost fight. Wait for the team to regroup.
  • Chasing kills away from the objective.
  • Refusing to swap into counters, especially as Tank.
  • Ignoring subrole passives. Flankers should grab health packs; Sharpshooters should prioritise headshots to refresh movement.
  • Picking perks on autopilot. The best choice changes match to match.
  • Relying on old map knowledge. Eichenwalde changed in Season 4.
  • Using ults in isolation. Combine them with a teammate's ult or a numbers advantage.

Advanced Tips

  • Ult tracking: Count enemy ults used; the team with more ult advantage should take the next fight.
  • Tactician supports can overcharge ultimates, so Ana/Baptiste/Lucio/Zenyatta/Jetpack Cat players can use ult faster in successive fights. Plan combos around that.
  • Use the Team Status Indicator added in Season 4 to see who's low before committing.
  • Recon heroes can see low-HP enemies through walls after damaging them; poke first, then commit to the kill.
  • Cooldown baiting: Force the enemy to use defensive cooldowns before your team engages.
  • VOD review: Rewatch the first fight you lost each match and note who died first and why.
