Researched September 2026 — current as of the final state after the December 31, 2021 server shutdown. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Server shutdown: 2K's Steam page says it plainly: "All multiplayer servers for NBA 2K20 will be shutdown as of 12/31/2021. After that time, all game functions requiring online servers will no longer function." That means MyTEAM, the Neighborhood (Park, Rec, Pro-Am), online Play Now, MyLEAGUE Online, VC syncing, live roster updates, and anything else that talks to 2K's servers are gone. What's left is the offline game: exhibitions, franchise modes, WNBA, and custom rosters. Think of NBA 2K20 as an offline basketball sim with frozen 2019–20 rosters.
Delisted: The Steam page now reads "NBA 2K20 is no longer available on the Steam store." If you already own it, you can still download and play it from your library, but new players can't buy it there.
Quick Start
- Know what still works. Play Now (local), MyLEAGUE and MyGM (offline), WNBA Play Now and Season, Blacktop and local multiplayer. Online modes and MyTEAM are dead.
- Rosters are frozen at the last update you downloaded before shutdown (2019–20 season). Edit players and teams yourself in the offline roster tools.
- Learn to time your shots. Release when the meter hits the top, or use the Pro Stick. Shot timing matters more than anything else.
- Play with a controller. 2K's controls are built for a gamepad. Keyboard is possible but awkward.
- Turn on shot feedback so you can see whether each release was early, slightly early, excellent or late, and adjust.
- Start on Pro or All-Star and move up to Superstar or Hall of Fame once you're winning easily.
- MyLEAGUE is the best long-term mode offline. Run a franchise for decades, with expansion and full customisation.
- Don't pay for online content. VC, MyTEAM and anything server-side can't be used any more.
What Works and What Doesn't
Mode | Status after 12/31/2021 | Notes
Play Now (local) | Works | Exhibition games vs CPU or local players
MyLEAGUE (offline) | Works | Deep franchise mode, and the best way to play now
MyGM (offline) | Works | Story-style GM mode focused on management
WNBA (Play Now / Season) | Works | All 12 WNBA teams, the first time they were in 2K. Not available in MyLEAGUE or MyGM
Blacktop | Works | Street pickup, local
MyCAREER | Limited | Anything tied to online VC, the Neighborhood or cloud sync is gone. Test it before you invest time
MyTEAM | Dead | Fully server-based
Neighborhood (Park, Rec, Pro-Am) | Dead | Online only
Online Play Now / MyLEAGUE Online | Dead |
2K Share (downloading rosters/draft classes) | Dead | Make your edits locally instead
Controls (Xbox-style layout)
Action | Offence | Defence
Face buttons | X shoot, A pass, B bounce pass, Y lob pass | X steal, Y block/rebound
Right stick | Pro Stick: dribble moves and shooting | Contest
RT | Sprint | Sprint
LT | Post up | Intense D (tight on-ball defence)
RB | Icon pass (pass to a specific player) | —
LB | Call a screen / play calling | —
(PlayStation: Square = X, Cross = A, Circle = B, Triangle = Y. Defensive switching, double-teams and the other secondary actions are listed in the in-game controller layout, and you can rebind everything under Controller Settings.)
Shooting: The Biggest Skill
- Shot meter: The meter fills while you hold shoot. Let go at the top of the meter for the best chance. Each player has his own release timing, so practise with your favourites in Freestyle or Practice.
- Pro Stick shooting: Hold the right stick in a direction to start the jumper and let it go at the top of the meter. Some players find it more consistent than the button.
- Openness matters most. A perfectly timed but heavily contested shot often misses. Use screens and passes to get open looks.
- Shot feedback: Turn on the feedback text in Settings. "Slightly Early" or "Slightly Late" tells you which way to adjust.
- Finishing at the rim: Let the layup and dunk animations do the work. Hold RT and drive to dunk, and avoid charging straight into a set defender.
Dribbling and Offence
- 2K20's size-up system: Chain moves with the Pro Stick (hesitation, crossovers, behind-the-back) to get the defender leaning, then drive the other way.
- Don't over-dribble. CPU defenders on higher difficulties punish lazy handles with steals. Two or three moves, then attack.
- The pick-and-roll is king. Call for a screen, use it, then read the defence: if the big man drops back, pull up; if he hedges, hit the roll man.
- Icon passing lets you pick the exact receiver. It's great for kick-outs to open shooters.
- Play calling: Use the play-calling menu to run set actions for your best scorers.
Defence Fundamentals
- Stay in front and don't reach. Mashing steal causes fouls and puts you out of position.
- Intense D (hold LT) keeps you tight against quick guards. Let go before you get beaten backdoor.
- Contest with your hands up, and time blocks on shooters rather than jumping at fakes.
- Help defence: Switch to the player guarding the ball and sit on passing lanes to disrupt cutters.
- Rebounding: Box out, then press Y as the ball comes off the rim.
MyLEAGUE and MyGM Tips (Best Offline Modes)
- MyLEAGUE: Control one team or all 30. Adjust the salary cap, trade logic, injuries, sim settings, and play or sim as much as you like. Great for long-term rebuilds.
- Expansion: Add up to six new franchises (a 36-team league) with custom names, logos and arenas, then fill them through an expansion draft.
- Rookie scale and cap management: Keep future cap room, target young high-potential players, and don't give out long, expensive deals to ageing stars.
- Sim settings: Use the sliders to make CPU trades and player progression realistic. Watch for silly trade-AI outcomes and adjust the trade difficulty if needed.
- MyGM: The story and management layer (owner goals, player happiness, staff). Hit the owner's goals to avoid getting fired.
- Draft classes: 2K Share is offline, so edit draft classes yourself or use the generated ones.
Settings Worth Changing
- Difficulty: Rookie → Pro → All-Star → Superstar → Hall of Fame. Pick one where you win about half your games against good teams.
- Quarter length: 5–6 minutes gives realistic stat lines without hour-long games.
- Camera: "2K" or "Broadcast" for a TV look. Many players raise the zoom and height for a better view of the court.
- Shot timing: Choose between user timing and real player percentages, depending on how much of the result you want to depend on your release.
- Sliders: 2K's gameplay sliders (shooting, fatigue, fouls) let you tune the sim offline. Nobody else is affected.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying VC or MyTEAM packs. The servers are off, so they're useless.
- Chasing steals. It leads to fouls and open layups.
- Taking contested threes early in the shot clock. Work the ball, run a pick-and-roll, and find the open man.
- Letting stars run out of energy. Fatigue lowers shooting and defence. Manage minutes.
- Expecting new rosters. They're frozen. Edit or build your own for the current season.
- Starting MyCAREER expecting the full experience. Without the Neighborhood and VC sync, much of the MyPLAYER loop is gone.
Advanced Tips
- Learn release timing per player. Some stars have quick jumpers, others slow set shots. Five minutes in Practice with each saves a lot of misses.
- Hunt mismatches. Screen to get a big man onto your quick guard, or post up a small guard with a strong forward.
- Use timeouts to break CPU runs. Changing lineups or calling a play resets the momentum.
- Build custom rosters: You can update ratings and move players around to create a "current season" version yourself.
- Local multiplayer: Couch co-op and versus still work, and are a good way to play 2K20 now.
