A player's guide to Mortal Kombat X (with the XL content on PC): controls, the meter and stamina systems, variations, how to learn a character, beginner-friendly picks, Krypt and Towers, Faction Wars, and online tips.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (XL content reached PC on October 4, 2016; no balance patches since). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick a variation, not just a character. Each fighter has three variations with different special moves. Your choice changes your whole game plan.
- Learn one character in one variation before exploring others.
- The meter has three bars. One bar = enhanced (EX) special, two bars = Breaker (combo escape), three bars = X-Ray.
- Stamina fuels running, backdashes, and interactables. Don't empty it carelessly — it also powers escapes.
- Block is a button. Holding block beats most attacks; learn which attacks are overheads (hit crouching blockers) and lows (hit standing blockers).
- Throws beat block. If an opponent blocks a lot, throw them.
- Stage interactables are powerful, but predictable. Use them to escape the corner or punish.
- Tutorial and Practice mode are your friends. Learn punishes (what's safe and unsafe) for your main.
Controls (Controller defaults)
MKX uses four attack buttons labeled 1 to 4.
Action | Xbox-style controller | Description
Front Punch (1) | X | Fast punch
Back Punch (2) | Y | Stronger punch
Front Kick (3) | A | Fast kick
Back Kick (4) | B | Stronger kick
Block | RT | Hold to block
Interact | RB | Stage interactables
Throw | LB (or 1+3 / 2+4) | Throw forward/back
Flip stance | LT | Switch stance
Run | Forward, forward (hold) | Uses stamina
Keyboard users can rebind everything; most players on PC use a controller or arcade stick.
Core Systems
Meter
Bars | Use
1 | Enhanced special move (EX)
2 | Breaker (escape a combo)
3 | X-Ray (cinematic super)
Meter management is central: Breakers save rounds, but X-Rays can end them. Many pros use meter for EX specials and Breakers more than X-Rays.
Stamina
- Two stamina bars.
- Running, backdashing, and interactables use stamina.
- Breakers require stamina too (on top of two bars of meter), as do certain special techniques.
- Run cancels are a key advanced technique: running mid-combo extends combos, but costs stamina.
Fatalities, Brutalities, and Faction Kills
- Fatalities: end the match with a special input at a specific distance.
- Brutalities: finish the match with a specific special move under specific conditions.
- Faction Kills: unique finishers tied to your Faction.
Variations
Every character has three variations. A few examples:
Character | Variations
Scorpion | Ninjutsu, Hellfire, Inferno
Sub-Zero | Cryomancer, Grandmaster, Unbreakable
Cassie Cage | Spec Ops, Hollywood, Brawler
Kotal Kahn | Blood God, Sun God, War God
Johnny Cage | Fisticuffs, A-List, Stunt Double
Sonya Blade | Special Forces, Demolition, Covert Ops
Liu Kang | Dualist, Flame Fist, Dragon's Fire
Erron Black | Gunslinger, Marksman, Outlaw
Kung Lao | Hat Trick, Buzz Saw, Tempest
D'Vorah | Brood Mother, Venomous, Swarm Queen
Roster
Per Wikipedia, 25 fighters launched in the base game, and 8 more came as DLC:
- Kombat Pack 1: Jason Voorhees, Predator, Tanya, Tremor.
- Kombat Pack 2: Alien, Bo' Rai Cho, Leatherface, Triborg.
- Goro: available as a pre-order bonus or with Kombat Pack 2.
On PC, the XL content (Kombat Pack 2 and more) arrived on October 4, 2016, bringing the PC version to parity with consoles. The XL era also added a new stage, The Pit, and several stage Brutalities.
Beginner-Friendly Picks
Character | Why
Scorpion | Simple specials (teleport, spear), strong punishes
Sub-Zero | Freeze and ice clone make zoning and combos easy
Cassie Cage | Easy combos, good all-rounder
Johnny Cage | Fast and aggressive
Liu Kang | Classic moves, strong pressure
Sonya Blade | Straightforward rushdown and good specials
How to Learn a Character
- Pick a variation and read its move list.
- Learn one basic combo that works from a fast starter.
- Find your fast pokes and learn which are safe.
- Learn your best punish (what you do after blocking an unsafe move).
- Practice your Fatality and Brutality for style points.
- Play against AI on medium, then online.
Fundamentals That Win Matches
Pokes, strings, and safety
- Pokes are your fastest normals (usually a low punch or kick). They interrupt opponents and start combos.
- Strings are button sequences that combo; many have a high/low or overhead mix.
- Safe vs. unsafe: if a move is unsafe on block, the opponent can punish it. Check frame data in Practice mode and end blocked pressure with safe moves.
Blocking and mix-ups
- Standing block stops highs, mids, and overheads; crouching block stops lows.
- Overheads hit crouching blockers; lows hit standing blockers.
- Throws can't be blocked; tech (escape) them by pressing the throw input as you're grabbed. Practice mode lets you record throws to drill the timing.
Wakeup
- When knocked down, you can get up with a normal getup or a wakeup attack.
- Wakeup attacks can beat pressure but are punishable if blocked.
- Mix up your wakeup choices so opponents can't predict them.
Corners and interactables
- Corners trap opponents and give you strong pressure.
- Interactables let you escape corners or launch attacks; they cost stamina when used for movement.
Practice Mode Checklist
- Turn on frame data and the input display.
- Record the dummy doing your opponent's common strings and practice blocking them.
- Practice your main combo from a poke, from a jump-in, and from a punish.
- Practice your Breaker timing with the dummy doing a long combo.
- Try each variation of your main for five minutes to see which fits you.
Modes
- Story Mode: cinematic chapters, each with a different character.
- Towers: Klassic Towers (arcade ladders) and Living Towers, an evolved Challenge Tower whose play conditions change over time.
- Krypt: a first-person exploration mode where you unlock costumes, Fatalities, Brutalities, and art using Koins.
- Faction Wars: pick one of five factions and earn points for it in an ongoing online competition, unlocking faction-specific Faction Kills and rewards.
Faction Wars factions
Faction | Flavor
Lin Kuei | Sub-Zero's clan of ninja assassins
Special Forces | Earthrealm's military (Sonya, Jax)
Black Dragon | Kano's criminal cartel
White Lotus | Liu Kang's and Kung Lao's Shaolin order
Brotherhood of Shadow | Shinnok and Quan Chi's cult
Your faction choice is cosmetic plus Faction Kills; it doesn't affect character stats, so pick whichever you like and focus on playing.
- Online: ranked, player matches, and King of the Hill.
Online features, Living Towers, and Faction Wars depend on WB's servers and on the PC player base; activity is much lower than in Mortal Kombat 1, so expect longer matchmaking.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spamming X-Ray. It's often better to save meter for Breakers.
- Ignoring overheads and lows. Learn which of your opponent's moves hit high or low.
- Running without stamina for Breakers. Keep some stamina in reserve.
- Mashing specials. Many are unsafe on block.
- Using interactables predictably. Opponents will punish them.
- Switching characters constantly. You improve faster with one main.
Advanced Tips
- Run cancels extend combos and pressure.
- Frame data in Practice mode shows what's safe; use it.
- Meter management: save two bars for a Breaker in close matches.
- Stage positioning: corners are powerful; learn to push opponents there.
- Anti-airs: learn your character's best anti-air.
- Wakeup options: some characters have strong wakeup attacks; learn when to use them.
- Tier discussions: late-XL tier lists commonly featured characters like Alien, Kotal Kahn, Sonya, D'Vorah, Kung Jin, and Erron Black near the top — but at casual levels, knowledge beats tier.
