A practical guide to EA SPORTS FC 24 in 2026: controls, PlayStyles, attacking and defending, tactics, Career Mode, Clubs and VOLTA, and what's still worth doing in Ultimate Team now that the game is three generations old.

Researched September 2026 — current as of FC 24's final 2023–24 season content (the last title update and Team of the Season / summer promos in 2024). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status note (September 2026): FC 24 was EA's first game under the EA SPORTS FC name after the FIFA licence ended. It launched on September 29, 2023 (with early access a week earlier for the Ultimate Edition). It has since been followed by FC 25 (September 27, 2024), FC 26 (September 26, 2025) and FC 27 (September 25, 2026), EA's current release. FC 24 gets no roster updates, gameplay patches or new Ultimate Team content, and EA's official Steam news for it now promotes newer titles. EA retires online services for older football games over time, so check EA's service-updates page before you buy for online play. Offline modes (Kick-Off, Career Mode, Tournaments) keep working regardless.

Quick Start

  • Treat FC 24 as an offline and Career game now. Kick-Off, Manager Career and Player Career are unaffected by the end of live service.
  • Learn PlayStyles. FC 24 replaced Traits with PlayStyles and PlayStyles+ (the gold versions are much stronger). Players with Finesse Shot+, Power Shot+, Quick Step+ or Intercept+ behave very differently.
  • Use Controlled Sprint (hold R1/RB + Sprint) to change direction at speed. It's one of FC 24's core new mechanics.
  • Precision Passing gives you more pace and accuracy and lets you play into space. It's FC 24's advanced passing input, so check Settings → Controls for the exact binding on your layout.
  • Defend with Jockey and Contain. Don't sprint into tackles, and use Second Man Press carefully.
  • Check AcceleRATE types (Explosive, Controlled, Lengthy). They change how fast a player gets to top speed.
  • Set up Custom Tactics before you play online or on higher Career difficulties.
  • Don't spend FC Points on FC 24 Ultimate Team. Nothing new is coming, and servers may close.

Controls That Matter

Controller layouts are shown as PlayStation / Xbox. Keyboard players can rebind everything in Settings.

Action | PlayStation | Xbox

Short pass / ground cross | X | A

Through ball | Triangle | Y

Lob / cross | Square | X

Shoot | Circle | B

Controlled Sprint | R1 + R2 | RB + RT

Finesse shot | R1 + Circle | RB + B

Low driven shot | L1 + R1 + Circle | LB + RB + B

Jockey | L2 | LT

Contain | X (hold) | A (hold)

Standing tackle | Circle | B

Slide tackle | Square | X

Second man press | R1 | RB

Skill moves | Right stick | Right stick

Assisted vs manual: new players should keep Assisted passing and shooting. Once you're comfortable, try Semi-Assisted through balls.

Gameplay Systems New to FC 24

PlayStyles and PlayStyles+

PlayStyles are gameplay traits in categories such as Scoring, Passing, Ball Control, Defending, Physical and Goalkeeping.

PlayStyle+ (examples) | Effect

Finesse Shot+ | Much more accurate curled finesse shots

Power Shot+ | Strong power shots with better accuracy

Quick Step+ | Explosive acceleration in the first steps

Tiki Taka+ | Very accurate first-time short passes

Incisive Pass+ | Better through balls

Intercept+ | Cuts out passing lanes more reliably

Anticipate+ | Better standing tackles, and keeps the ball after winning it

Bruiser+ | Wins shoulder challenges

Rapid+ | Faster top speed with the ball

Technical+ | Better dribbling at speed

In any squad, prioritise players with the PlayStyles+ that suit your style.

AcceleRATE

  • Explosive: very fast off the mark. Usually smaller, agile players.
  • Controlled: balanced.
  • Lengthy: slow first steps, then very fast top speed. Usually taller players.

HyperMotionV

HyperMotionV builds animations from real match footage, so players move more realistically. Expect more "weighty" physical duels than in older FIFA titles.

Attacking Fundamentals

  • Don't sprint everything. Walking with the ball (release sprint) keeps it closer and makes defenders commit.
  • Use Controlled Sprint to turn sharply past a defender without losing the ball.
  • Switch play. Look at your wide players and use driven passes (R1/RB + X/A) to go from one flank to the other quickly.
  • Shoot from good positions. Inside the box, finesse or low driven shots are more reliable than full power.
  • Cut-back crosses (low crosses from the byline) are consistent against human defenders.
  • Use skill moves sparingly. A Ball Roll, Drag Back, or Heel to Heel Flick often beats a defender better than a flashy trick.

Defending Fundamentals

  • Jockey (L2/LT) to stay goal-side.
  • Contain by holding X/A to hold position instead of diving in. Tackle (Circle/B) only when the attacker's touch takes the ball away from their feet.
  • Standing tackles are safer than slide tackles, especially in the box.
  • Move your CDM with the right stick to block passing lanes. Moving a midfielder is often better than moving a defender.
  • Use Second Man Press only when you need to win the ball back quickly. It pulls your shape apart.
  • Know your defenders' PlayStyles. Intercept+ and Anticipate+ defenders win most 1v1s.

Skill Moves Worth Learning

Every player has a skill move star rating (1 to 5). A move only works if the player has enough stars, so check the rating before you try anything fancy. The in-game Skill Games and the Skill Move list in the pause menu show each input for your controller.

Move | Why it's useful

Ball Roll | Shifts the ball sideways to open a shooting or passing angle. Works for most players

Drag Back | Stops the ball dead and pulls it back, which resets an attack when a defender closes you down

Heel to Heel Flick | Quick change of direction on the run, good for beating a jockeying defender

Stop and Turn | Turns you away from pressure near the touchline

Roulette | Spins past a defender who commits to a tackle

Elastico (5-star players) | High-risk, high-reward 1v1 move for elite dribblers

The rule of thumb in FC 24 is one move, then pass or shoot. Chaining several skills rarely beats a human defender who's jockeying properly.

Set Pieces

  • Free kicks: move the aim reticle with the left stick, choose the contact point on the ball with the right stick, then set the power. Players with high Free Kick Accuracy and a Dead Ball PlayStyle are worth putting on set pieces. For crosses from wide free kicks, aim for your tallest header.
  • Corners: aim with the left stick toward the near post, penalty spot or far post, and make sure a strong header is in that zone. Short corners are a safe way to keep possession against tall defences.
  • Penalties: the composure ring and timing matter as much as placement. Practise in the Skill Games before a Career cup final.
  • Set your takers in Team Management (captain, penalties, free kicks, corners) so the right players step up automatically.

Goalkeeping

  • Leave the keeper on AI most of the time. Manually rushing out is the most common way to concede.
  • Calling the keeper out (the GK rush-out input) is only worth it on a clear one-on-one through ball. Mistimed, it leaves an empty net.
  • Keepers with the Far Reach or Footwork PlayStyles make noticeably more saves in the corners.

Difficulty and Offline Settings

  • Difficulty ladder: Beginner, Amateur, Semi-Pro, Professional, World Class, Legendary, Ultimate. Most players settle between Professional and World Class for Career Mode.
  • Game speed and half length can be changed in Kick-Off and Career. Longer halves give more realistic stats and fatigue.
  • Competitor Mode makes the CPU use the tactics and skill moves that human players rely on, which is good practice before playing people.
  • Training and Skill Games in the main menu are the fastest way to learn new inputs without pressure.

Tactics and Formations

Formation | Style | Notes

4-2-3-1 (Wide) | Balanced | Two CDMs, stable defence

4-3-2-1 | Central attack | Two CFs behind a striker. Strong through the middle

4-4-2 | Classic | Good width and two strikers

5-2-1-2 | Counter-attack | Very defensive, fast counters

4-2-2-2 | Direct attack | Two CAMs and two STs, popular in competitive play

Custom Tactics basics

  • Defensive style: Balanced or Press After Possession Loss for most players.
  • Width and depth: 40–55 width and 50–60 depth is a good starting point.
  • Offensive style: Balanced or Fast Build Up.
  • Player Instructions: set CDMs to "Stay Back While Attacking", full-backs to "Stay Back" if you're getting countered, and your ST to "Get In Behind".

Career Mode

Manager Career

  • Tactical Visions set your club's playing identity: Tiki Taka, Gegenpress, Counter-Attack, Wing Play, Park the Bus, and more. You get bonuses for players who fit.
  • Coaching Staff hire coaches to improve specific attribute groups.
  • Scouting: search young players with specific traits, then send scouts to high-potential regions.
  • Youth Academy: scout youth players each month and promote them at 16–18. Many turn into big ratings.
  • Budget: check the Transfer Budget and Wage Budget carefully. Loans and sell-on clauses help.
  • Tip: in the first season, sell older players on big wages for cash and invest in high-potential youngsters.

Player Career

  • Player Agents: agents talk to your manager and arrange transfers or loans.
  • Playable Highlights let you play key match moments.
  • Training: set up Development plans and play your position consistently.

Clubs and VOLTA

  • Clubs gives you your own Pro player. Build attributes through skill points and PlayStyles, and play with friends in 11v11 or smaller formats.
  • VOLTA Football is 5v5 street football with Arcade, Squads and Battles. VOLTA was replaced by Rush from FC 25 onward, so FC 24 is the last FC game with VOLTA.

Ultimate Team (if servers are still up)

  • Evolutions (new in FC 24) let you upgrade specific player cards by completing objectives.
  • Women's football was integrated into Ultimate Team for the first time, alongside men's players in mixed squads.
  • Chemistry uses the FIFA 23 system: club, league and nation links out of 3 per player, with Icons and Heroes giving extra chemistry.
  • Squad Building Challenges (SBCs) trade player cards for packs or special players.
  • Rivals and Champions: the main competitive modes. Champions needs a qualification in Rivals or Playoffs.
  • Advice for 2026: don't spend real money. Nothing new is coming, and online services may end.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sprinting everywhere. You'll lose the ball to good defenders.
  • Slide tackling in the box.
  • Ignoring PlayStyles. A player with Finesse Shot+ is far better than a similar player without it.
  • Using the same formation for every match. Adapt to your opponent's style.
  • Spending FC Points on FC 24 now. Nothing new is coming.
  • Forgetting stamina. Rotate your squad in Career Mode, especially in busy months.

Advanced Tips

  • Finesse shot with a PlayStyle+ player at the edge of the box is the most reliable goal source in FC 24.
  • Lob through ball (L1 + Triangle / LB + Y) beats high defensive lines.
  • Driven passes (R1/RB + pass) break lines well, especially into a striker's feet.
  • Manual defending: move the CDM into passing lanes and switch players quickly with the right stick.
  • Custom Tactics: set "Balanced" defensive style with depth around 50 for a solid structure. Increase depth if you want more pressing.
  • Career Mode youth: scout in countries like Brazil, France or Spain for the highest-potential youth players.
  • In Clubs, allocate skill points carefully. Upgrade the PlayStyles and core attributes that fit your position.
