A player-focused guide to Assassin's Creed III Remastered on PC: Connor's campaign, the Homestead economy, naval play, The Tyranny of King Washington, the bundled Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered, and a 100% plan built around the Steam achievements added in 2025.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (Steam achievements added February 25, 2025; no further content updates since). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • The first three sequences are a long prologue. You play as Haytham Kenway before Connor (Ratonhnhaké:ton) even appears. Stick with it; the open world and systems open up properly around Sequence 5.
  • What the Remaster changed matters. You can whistle from any hiding spot (not just corners), perform double assassinations without going high profile, and free-aim your bow and pistols. Crafting, the economy, and the minimap icons were all overhauled.
  • Multiplayer is gone. The Remaster is single-player only. It bundles all solo DLC (including The Tyranny of King Washington) plus the full Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered.
  • Invest in the Homestead early. Recruiting and helping Homestead residents unlocks crafting recipes, and crafting plus convoys is how Connor makes real money.
  • Do the Aquila naval missions as soon as they unlock. They are some of the best content in the game, upgrades for the ship come from them, and "All Washed Up" requires finishing all of them.
  • Recruit Assassins through liberation missions. Liberating districts in Boston and New York earns you recruits you can call in combat and send on contracts for money and experience.
  • Counter, then kill. Combat is timing-based: counter when the red indicator appears, then pick a follow-up (kill, disarm, throw, or break defence). Grenadiers and officers need a break defence or disarm first.
  • Replay memories for optional objectives. Full synchronisation constraints can be replayed later, so do not stress about them on a first run.

Core Systems

Movement and Free-Running

  • Hold the free-run input to parkour automatically; Connor climbs trees and cliffs in the Frontier as easily as buildings in town.
  • Tree-running is the fastest way through the Frontier and the best way to sneak up on camps.
  • Synchronise Viewpoints to reveal the map around them. Leap of faith into hay to escape.

Stealth

  • Social stealth: blend into crowds, sit on benches, hide in haystacks, bushes, and wells.
  • Whistle from any hiding spot (Remaster change) to lure guards to you, then kill from cover.
  • Double assassinations no longer require high profile in the Remaster, so you can take out paired guards quietly.
  • Keep notoriety low by tearing down wanted posters, bribing town criers, and bribing printers.

Combat

  • Counter-based: wait for the enemy's red indicator, counter, then choose a follow-up.
  • Chain kills: after a kill, attack the next enemy immediately to chain executions.
  • Human shields: when a firing line aims at you, grab an enemy to absorb the volley. The achievement "Whit's fur ye'll no go by ye!" asks you to do this 5 times.
  • Tools: tomahawk and hidden blades, bow, pistols, rope dart (hang enemies from trees; "Predator" needs 5), poison darts, trip mines, snares, and smoke bombs.
  • Free aim in the Remaster makes the bow far more useful than in the original release.

Enemy Types

Enemy | How to deal with them

Regulars | Counter and kill; fine to chain

Grenadiers (large brutes) | Break defence first, or use a disarm counter; avoid trading blows

Officers | Break defence, then kill; they coordinate firing lines

Jagers (elite hunters) | Appear at high notoriety; tough and fast. Lower notoriety to stop them spawning

Riflemen and firing lines | Human shield, or close the distance and interrupt them

Hunting

The Frontier is full of animals whose pelts, meat, and parts sell well or feed crafting.

  • Use a clean kill (hidden blade, bait plus snare, or a single arrow) for better quality pelts.
  • Predators like bears and wolves trigger a quick-time survival sequence. "Survivor" (survive 10 animal encounters) and "Eye Witness" (watch a predator kill an enemy) are related achievements.
  • Bait plus a snare is the lowest-effort way to farm animals without damaging the pelt.

The Homestead, Crafting, and Money

The Davenport Homestead is Connor's base. Homestead missions bring in artisans and settlers, each of whom unlocks production and crafting.

Residents you will recruit include Achilles (your mentor, living in the manor), farmers, loggers, a blacksmith, a tailor, a hunter, a miner, and innkeepers. Getting any artisan settled pops "House Party"; getting every optional character settled pops "A Complete Set".

Money loop:

  • Complete Homestead missions to unlock resident levels and recipes.
  • Gather raw materials (from residents, hunting, and purchase).
  • Craft goods and send them out by convoy to Boston, New York, and the Frontier.
  • Upgrade transport capacity so each convoy carries more.

Convoy tips:

  • Convoys can be ambushed. Upgrades and closer destinations reduce the risk.
  • "Monopoly Man" requires sending a convoy to each of Boston, New York, and the Frontier. "Patent Not Pending" asks you to craft one of Franklin's inventions for the manor.
  • Collect Ben Franklin's Almanac pages in Boston and New York; completing an Almanac unlocks one of his inventions. "Blowing in the Wind" requires a full Almanac.

What to spend on:

  • Aquila upgrades (hull, cannons, swivels) from the Harbormaster.
  • Better weapons, holsters, and pouches from general stores.
  • Recruits' equipment scales with their progress rather than your money.

Naval Missions and the Aquila

Connor captains the brig Aquila. Naval play covers main-story missions, optional naval missions, and privateer contracts.

Controls in brief: raise sails to half for tight turns and full sails for speed; line up with an enemy to fire broadsides; use swivel guns for weak points; chain shot targets masts at short range. Brace for impact when enemy broadsides are coming (watch the colour warnings).

Tips:

  • Turn into big waves head-on to avoid damage.
  • Close range chain shots cripple ships before your broadside finishes them.
  • Upgrade the hull before cannons; survivability wins long fights.
  • "Tumblehome" unlocks when you upgrade the Aquila; "All Washed Up" requires every naval mission; "Entrepreneur, not Pirate!" requires all 12 Privateer Contracts; the Oak Island treasure hunt "Kidd Gloves" is a separate goal.

Assassin Recruits and Liberation Missions

Boston and New York are divided into districts. Completing liberation missions in a district earns you a recruit. Up to six recruits can join you.

  • Call recruits in combat for assassinations, covering fire, or riots to distract guards.
  • Send recruits on contracts from pigeon coops for money and experience. "Magna cum Laude" asks you to get one to Assassin rank.
  • Liberate forts in each area to reduce patrols and notoriety. Fort Wolcott is its own achievement ("Bring Down the House").
  • "Man of the People" requires liberating every district in either Boston or New York.

Campaign Outline (No Major Spoilers)

Section | What happens (gameplay-wise)

Sequences 1-3 | Haytham's story in London and the colonies; tutorial for combat, stealth, and assassinations

Sequence 4 | Young Ratonhnhaké:ton's childhood in the Frontier

Sequence 5 | Connor's training with Achilles; the Homestead and wider world open up

Sequences 6-8 | Boston and the early revolution; Templar targets start falling

Sequences 9-12 | Naval campaign, New York, and the end of Connor's hunt

Present day | Desmond's missions (Skyscraper, Stadium, Abstergo) interleave between sequences

Epilogue | Post-credits missions; "Fin" requires all of them

Main Templar targets include William Johnson, John Pitcairn, Thomas Hickey, Benjamin Church, Nicholas Biddle, Haytham Kenway, and Charles Lee.

Story achievements track this: "Rude Awakening", "Mystery Guest" (Sequences 1 and 2), "How D'ya Like Them Apples" (3), "Heroes are Born" (4), "The Day the Templars Cried" (5), "Tea is for Englishmen" (6), "The Whites of Their Eyes" (7), "Caged Wolf" (8), "Two if by Sea" (9), "Grim Expectations" (10), "Difficult End" (11), and "The Sum of Truth" (12), plus the three present-day achievements and "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished" for the ending.

The Tyranny of King Washington

An alternate-history story in which George Washington, corrupted by an Apple of Eden, rules as a tyrant. Each episode gives Connor a new animal-spirit power.

Episode | Setting | Power | Key achievements

The Infamy | Frontier | Wolf Cloak (turn invisible; later summon a wolf pack) | "West Point Payback" (defeat Benedict Arnold), "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" (25 kills while cloaked), "Uniquely Familiar"

The Betrayal | Boston | Eagle Flight (fast teleport-like travel) | "Blindsided" (defeat Putnam), "Frequent Flyer" (1 km of Eagle Flight)

The Redemption | New York | Bear Might (area slam) | "First in the Hearts" (defeat Washington), "Aftershock" (125 kills with Bear Might)

Tips:

  • The powers drain your health, so recharge by standing still out of combat.
  • Grind "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" and "Aftershock" naturally while playing; replay the episode if you fall short.
  • Each episode also has a 100% synchronisation achievement ("Frontiersman", "The New Tea Party", "If I Can Make It There").

Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered

Aveline de Grandpré's story in late 18th-century New Orleans, the bayou, and Chichen Itza.

Personas:

Persona | Strength | Weakness

Assassin | Best combat and full weapon access | Detected very quickly; notoriety builds fast

Lady | Can charm or bribe guards into restricted areas; detected slowest | Cannot free-run

Slave | Blends in with workers, carries crates past suspicious guards | Fewer weapons

Switch persona at dressing chambers; "My 1st Dressing Chamber" and "Buy All Dressing Chambers" are both achievements.

Liberation tips:

  • Missable ending: killing all of the Citizen E targets unlocks the true ending ("The Truth"). Finishing without them gets you the "fake" ending ("Complete Aveline's Story").
  • Collectibles include diary pages, alligator eggs, Mayan statuettes, mushrooms, and pocket watches ("Collector", "One Watch is not Enough").
  • The trade network is a slow-burn money maker, so start it early. Related achievements: "Business Woman" (every Business Rivals mission), "Ship Crew" (every Ship Crew mission), and "Shipmaster" (buy the maximum 8 ships).
  • Other Liberation completion achievements: "Secret Lives" (all persona-specific side missions), "Persona Collector" (all persona-specific collectibles), "Bayou Fever" (every Bayou Fever mission), "Liberation" (every Free Slaves mission), and "Thief" (pickpocket 5000 ecu in total).
  • Notable combat achievements: "Machete" (5 kills in 15 seconds with the Sugarcane Machete, no Chain Kill), "Umbrella" (25 Parasol Gun kills), "Hangman" (10 whip predator moves), "Poison" (make a berserk-poisoned enemy kill 5).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing the story and ignoring the Homestead. Money gets tight without crafting and convoys.
  • Fighting Jagers at full notoriety. They keep coming. Lose notoriety first with posters, criers, or printers.
  • Trying to hit grenadiers normally. Break their defence or disarm them.
  • Skipping naval upgrades. Later naval missions punish a stock Aquila.
  • Playing Liberation and missing Citizen E. Track them as you go so you get the true ending on your first run.
  • Obsessing over full sync on a first run. Memory replay exists; enjoy the story first.

Advanced Tips

  • Bait and trap stealth: a whistle from a bush plus a double assassination can clear an entire patrol route in the Remaster.
  • Rope dart hangs from tree branches are silent and count toward "Predator"; line up targets under branches in the Frontier.
  • Circus Act (15 guards with one cannon shot) is easiest during a mission where you can fire a cannon into a tight formation; save before attempting.
  • Spit Roast needs a musket double assassination. Pick up a musket from a downed soldier and approach two guards together.
  • Farm "Jager Bomb" (10 Jagers after becoming fully notorious) near a fast escape route; save beforehand.
  • Recruit contracts run while you play. Keep sending recruits out between missions for passive income and rank progress.
  • Easy-to-overlook AC III achievements: "By Invitation Only" and "In Good Standing" (join a Club, then finish all challenges for one Club), "Original Gamer" (win Fanorona, Morris, and Bowls on the Homestead), "Prince of Thieves" (loot a convoy without killing its guards), "Coureur des Bois" (exchange undamaged pelts at every general store), "An Extraordinary Man" (complete the Encyclopedia of the Common Man), and "RHP Master" (synchronise all viewpoints).
  • Progress Tracker: "Multitasking" (50%) and "Completionist" (100%) span every activity. Work through a category at a time instead of hopping around.

FAQ

Does Assassin's Creed III Remastered have Steam achievements? Yes, since February 25, 2025. They cover the main game, The Tyranny of King Washington, and Liberation, and already-completed accomplishments sync retroactively when you launch the game once.

Is multiplayer included? No. The Remaster removed multiplayer. It includes all single-player DLC.

How long is it? The main story is long for the series because of the Haytham prologue. Expect roughly a few dozen hours for the story, and much more for 100% plus Tyranny of King Washington and Liberation.

Do I need a Ubisoft account? Yes, the PC version uses Ubisoft Connect alongside Steam.

Can I miss collectibles or achievements permanently? Most AC III content can be finished after the story and memories can be replayed. In Liberation, plan to kill all Citizen E targets before the finale for the true ending.

Should I play the original or the Remaster? The Remaster, for the stealth, aiming, and crafting improvements, unless you specifically want the original's multiplayer (which is not in the Remaster either way).
