A practical guide to Bohemia Interactive's 2010 military sim in 2026: which version to buy, how to get it running on modern Windows, core infantry and squad skills, the campaign, the editor, and the mods (including DayZ Mod) that keep it alive.
Researched September 2026 — current as of version 1.64 (November 2019) plus the Windows 11 BattlEye hotfixes of December 2021; the 1.63 build remains on the 163_backup Steam branch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Operation Arrowhead (OA) is standalone. It doesn't require the original Arma 2. But most mods (including DayZ Mod) and the full content set want Arma 2: Combined Operations, which bundles Arma 2 and OA.
- Launch the right executable for what you're doing. Combined Operations runs as OA with Arma 2's content loaded; mods load via launch parameters or a launcher.
- Do the bootcamp/training missions first. Arma's controls are dense and the game won't hold your hand in the campaign.
- One or two bullets kill you. Move from cover to cover, stay low, and don't run across open ground.
- Zero your sights. Many optics have adjustable range; rounds drop over distance.
- Learn the command menu (select units with the F-keys, give orders with the number keys). You lead squads in much of the campaign.
- The action menu does almost everything. Scroll the mouse wheel to open it, then pick an option to get in vehicles, pick up gear, heal or open doors.
- Save often in single player. The campaign is long and mistakes are fatal.
Which Version to Buy
Product | What it includes | Who it's for
Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead | Takistan, Zargabad, Proving Grounds, the OA campaign and factions | Standalone OA content only
Arma 2: Combined Operations | Arma 2 plus Operation Arrowhead | Most players, and required for DayZ Mod and most mods
Arma 2: Complete Collection | Combined Operations plus the three DLCs | Everything
Arma X: Anniversary Edition | A multi-game bundle across the series | Collectors
The three DLCs: British Armed Forces (August 2010), Private Military Company (ION contractors, with its own campaign; later bundled with BAF as Arma 2: Reinforcements in April 2011), and Army of the Czech Republic (August 2012).
Running It on Modern PCs
- Version 1.64 (November 2019, built with the CorePatch team) added Windows 10 support plus many crash and multiplayer fixes.
- December 2021 hotfixes added BattlEye support for Windows 11 and put compatible BattlEye files in the Expansion folder.
- Legacy branches: if an update breaks a mod or server, right-click the game in Steam, open Properties, go to Betas, and pick legacy or 163_backup (the 1.63 build, now unlocked for servers still running it).
- The engine is old and CPU-bound. Raising view distance tanks performance more than most graphics settings. Keep view distance sensible and turn up object detail only if you have headroom.
- If you see odd crashes on start, verify files in Steam and try launching without mods first.
The Setting
Three years after the original Arma 2's Chernarus conflict, a US-led coalition invades Takistan, a fictional Central Asian nation, in summer 2012 to stop Colonel Muhammad Aziz's government from launching SCUD missiles at neighboring Karzeghistan. You play several roles across the campaign, from infantry and special operations to pilots and tank crews. Optional objectives change later missions and lead to multiple endings.
Maps
Map | Character
Takistan | Huge desert and mountain terrain with villages, valleys and airfields. The main campaign map.
Zargabad | Dense city, perfect for close-quarters and urban fights.
Proving Grounds (Desert) | Small training and testing map.
Factions
US Army, Czech Army, German KSK and UN peacekeepers on one side; Takistani Army, Takistani militia and Guerrillas on the other, with locals caught between. Where the original Arma 2 centered on the US Marine Corps, OA's US Army brings SCAR-L/SCAR-H rifles, Stryker ICVs and Bradley IFVs. Some helicopters and vehicles, like the AH-64D Apache Longbow, have FLIR thermal imaging.
Core Controls
Defaults can differ by keyboard preset, so confirm in Options, Controls. These are the ones you'll use constantly:
Key | Action
W/A/S/D | Move
Q/E | Lean left/right
V | Step over obstacles
R | Reload
F | Change fire mode
G | Gear (inventory)
Right mouse | Optics / aim down sights
Page Up/Page Down | Adjust sight zeroing (range) on supported optics
N | Night vision
M | Map
Mouse wheel | Action menu (get in, pick up, heal, etc.)
F1 to F12 | Select squad members
1 to 0 | Command menu (move, formation, target, engage, etc.)
Infantry Fundamentals
- Stance matters. Prone is most stable and hardest to hit. Crouch to move short distances; stand only when sprinting between covers.
- Rifle bullets penetrate some materials. Thin walls, wooden fences and car doors don't stop rounds. Look for solid cover.
- Ballistics are real. Bullets drop over range and take time to travel. Aim high at distance, lead moving targets.
- Your weapon has weight and sway. Firing from prone or resting reduces sway; running raises your heart rate and makes aiming shaky.
- Backpacks (new in OA) carry extra ammo, launchers and gear. Pick one up for AT rounds or medic kits.
- Report and spot. Enemies in Arma are hard to see. Use optics and look for movement, muzzle flash and silhouettes on ridgelines.
- Medics save you. Wounded soldiers can be healed via the action menu by a medic.
Squad Command
In many campaign missions and scenarios you're the team leader.
- Select units with F-keys (or all with the tilde key).
- Order with the number-key command menu: Move, Formation, Engage, Target, Take cover, Mount/Dismount.
- Use formations and combat modes. "Stealth" and "Combat" behaviors make AI move smarter; "Safe" makes them careless.
- Point at a target and order "Target" to get your AI to engage it. AI sees further than you think; use them as spotters.
- Don't bunch up. One grenade or burst can wipe a clustered squad.
High Command
Some missions put you in charge of whole groups rather than individual soldiers, so you issue orders from the map. Think in objectives and routes instead of micromanaging.
Vehicles
- Get in through the action menu. Driver, gunner, commander and cargo seats each have their own controls.
- Thermal imaging on supported vehicles is a massive advantage. Toggle vision modes with N.
- Helicopters are flyable with a keyboard and mouse but much easier with a joystick. Practice on the Proving Grounds.
- Armor: don't drive tanks alone into towns. Infantry with launchers will kill you. Stay back and support.
- UAVs: OA added real-time controlled UAVs for reconnaissance.
The Campaign
The OA campaign follows US forces through the invasion of Takistan. Missions include infantry assaults, special operations, armor battles and helicopter flights. Tips:
- Read the briefing and check the map. Objectives, optional tasks and intel are all there.
- Optional objectives matter. They affect later missions and which ending you get.
- Save before each assault. Also save after clearing each area.
- Let the AI help. Your squadmates are useful if you order them clearly.
- The Private Military Company DLC adds a separate campaign with ION contractors; British Armed Forces and Army of the Czech Republic add units, weapons and missions.
The Editor and Scenarios
- The built-in mission editor lets you place units, waypoints and triggers on any map. It's the best way to practice, and the source of countless community missions.
- Play single scenarios for quick action and Warfare-style modes for large combined-arms battles.
- Multiplayer supports co-op campaign play and large-scale battles on dedicated servers, with optional BattlEye anti-cheat.
Mods and DayZ Mod
Arma 2's modding scene was enormous; its most famous mod is DayZ Mod (early 2012), a zombie survival mod that became a phenomenon and boosted the game's sales before becoming a standalone game.
- DayZ Mod needs both Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead (Combined Operations). Most community servers use a launcher to install matching mod versions.
- Other well-known mods include ACE (realism), ACRE (radio), and many unit/island packs.
- Keep mods and server versions in sync. Most "can't join" problems come from mismatched versions, which is why the legacy branches exist.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying OA alone when you want DayZ Mod. You need Combined Operations.
- Running and gunning. You'll be dead before you see who shot you.
- Maxing view distance. It kills FPS on almost any modern PC.
- Ignoring zeroing. At 300m and beyond, your shots will fall short.
- Standing behind thin cover. Arma models penetration; move behind solid walls.
- Clumping your squad. Spread out; order formations.
- Forgetting to save. No checkpoints in many missions.
Advanced Tips
- Use Q/E leaning at corners to expose as little of your body as possible.
- Use the map as a weapon. Contour lines tell you where ridges and dead ground are.
- Pair with a teammate for bounding moves: one covers, one moves.
- In helicopters, use landing zones behind cover and hold altitude over hostile villages.
- For long-range shots, check the range using the map or an optic with a rangefinder, then zero.
- Rebind keys you use often (like stance changes) to spots you can hit under stress.
- Try the legacy branches if a mod or server insists on an older build.
FAQ
Do I need Arma 2 to play Operation Arrowhead? No, it's standalone. But Combined Operations (Arma 2 plus OA) is recommended for the full content and needed for most mods.
Does it run on Windows 11? Yes. The 1.64 update added Windows 10 support and December 2021 hotfixes added BattlEye support for Windows 11.
What is the 163_backup branch? A Steam beta branch containing version 1.63 of OA. It was unlocked in December 2021 for compatibility with Linux servers still on 1.63.
Is multiplayer still alive? Small but active. Community servers, especially for DayZ Mod and co-op missions, still run, though populations are much lower than in the 2010s.
Should I play this or Arma 3? Arma 3 has a larger modern community and better performance. Play OA for its Takistan campaign, DayZ Mod, and classic mods.
What are the DLCs worth? British Armed Forces, Private Military Company and Army of the Czech Republic add factions, weapons and missions. The Complete Collection bundle is the easiest way to get them all.
