A guide to Scott Cawthon's free FNaF mashup: office systems, how scoring works, reliable counters for the most common animatronics, beginner presets, Faz-Coins and the Death Coin, challenges, the road to 50/20, and fixing crashes.

Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 1.032 (July 2018), the last gameplay update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: Ultimate Custom Night released free on Steam on 27 June 2018 and has not had gameplay updates since the 1.03x patches in mid-2018. It is complete and still free to play.

Quick Start

  • Start small. Pick 5-10 animatronics at low levels. Learn each one's mechanic before stacking them.
  • Read the character descriptions. In the select screen, each animatronic's card tells you how to counter it. It's the best in-game reference.
  • Score = levels x 10. Each animatronic level is worth 10 points; all 50 at level 20 is the maximum, 10,000 points ("50/20").
  • Watch your three meters. Power, Noise, and Temperature interact with many characters.
  • Close doors and vents only when needed. Every closed door, vent, and active tool drains power, and several tools also raise noise.
  • Collect Faz-Coins on cameras. Spend them at the Prize Counter; the Death Coin removes one animatronic for the night.
  • Know which tools your roster needs. The heater, A/C, Global Music Box and Power Generator each matter only for certain characters; their cards tell you which.
  • Save power for the last hour. Running out of power ends most runs.

Office Systems

From your office you manage two side doors, two vents, and two air hoses, plus the monitor and tools.

The monitor

System | What you do there

Cameras | Watch rooms, collect Faz-Coins, deal with camera-based characters

Vent system | Set laser traps (vent snares) to block vent crawlers

Duct system | Close one of two air ducts, and use the audio lure

Office tools

Tool | Effect | Trade-off

Power Generator | Slows power drain | Raises noise

Silent Ventilation | Lowers noise | The office heats up faster while it runs

Heater | Raises temperature | Some characters are repelled by heat

Power A/C | Cools the office | Uses power

Global Music Box | Keeps music-sensitive characters calm | Uses power

Off | Nothing | Saves power

You pick one tool mode at a time from the office panel, so you are always choosing a trade-off. Also keep an eye on the two Pirate Cove curtains on the cameras; the store page calls them out as a core check.

The three meters

Meter | Why it matters

Power | Everything uses it; at zero you are defenseless

Noise | Attracts noise-sensitive characters

Temperature | Too hot and some characters act up; also affects gameplay

Threat Types

Grouping characters by where they attack makes large rosters manageable. Before a night, sort your roster into these buckets and build a checking routine around them.

Threat type | What it looks like | Your tool

Door attackers | Come to the left or right door | Close the matching door at the right moment

Vent crawlers | Move through the vent system | Vent snares on the vent monitor

Duct crawlers | Travel through the two air ducts | Close a duct, use the audio lure

Camera characters | Must be watched or maintained on a specific camera | Regular camera checks

Office characters | Appear in the office itself | Mask, clicks, or specific actions

Meter characters | React to noise, heat, or power | Tool management

Wildcards | Random or disruptive effects | Adapt; save the Death Coin

A useful habit: every time you pull up the monitor, go through the same order (music box, key cameras, vents, ducts), then drop it and scan the office. A consistent loop means nothing slips through as the roster grows.

Doors vs power

Doors are your strongest defense but the most expensive. Close a door only after you hear or see the threat, and open it again as soon as the character leaves. Leaving doors shut "just in case" is the fastest way to run out of power before 6 AM.

Noise management

Noise rises with active tools like the Power Generator and with some character mechanics. When a noise-sensitive character is in your roster, alternate between Silent Ventilation (quiet) and the A/C (cool, but uses power), since only one tool runs at a time. If both noise and heat matter, prioritize whichever character is more dangerous at your chosen levels.

Common Counters

Every character has a specific counter. These are the ones new players trip over the most, summarized from community play; the character card on the select screen is the authoritative version, so double-check it before a serious run.

Animatronic | Counter

Puppet (Marionette) | Keep her music box wound on its camera

Toy Freddy | Watch his game of Five Nights with Mr. Hugs on camera; close the door on his game when the enemy is at it

Toy Bonnie / Toy Chica | Put on the Freddy mask when they appear

Chica | Keep her fed with music she likes; she gets bored of a song, so check her card for how to change it

Nightmarionne | Move your mouse away when it appears

Rockstar Freddy | Pay him 5 Faz-Coins or turn on the Heater

Rockstar Foxy | His parrot offers deals; click it

Phone Guy | Mute the call

Helpy | Click him before he blows the air horn

Bonnet | Click her nose

Lolbit | Type LOL

Music Man | Keep the noise low

Ballora | Listen for her music and close the door on that side

Vent crawlers (e.g. Molten Freddy, Scrap Baby, Afton) | Snare the vent they are in on the vent monitor; check each character's card for which system they use

Jack-O-Chica | Keep the temperature low

Dee Dee | Randomly adds extra characters to the night

Faz-Coins and the Prize Counter

  • Faz-Coins appear on cameras; click them to collect.
  • The Death Coin (from the Prize Counter) removes one animatronic for the night. Use it on your hardest character.
  • Rockstar Freddy wants Faz-Coins too, so budget them.

Power-ups

Some rewards give power-ups such as Frigid (cools the office), 3 Coins (start with coins), and DD Repel (keep Dee Dee away). Check the Prize Counter and challenge menu in your copy for exactly how each is unlocked.

Challenges

The challenge menu has 16 themed challenges with preset animatronic groups. They are good practice for specific mechanics.

Beginner Presets

Preset | Characters | Why

Learn systems | Puppet, Toy Freddy, Phone Guy, Chica | Simple mechanics, teaches monitor use

Office management | Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, Rockstar Freddy, Helpy | Mask, coins, clicks

Vent control | Molten Freddy, Afton, Scrap Baby | Vent snares

Audio | Ballora, Music Man | Listening

Raise levels once each preset feels easy.

The Road to 50/20

  • Master each character individually first.
  • Build routines: check cams, wind the music box, set snares, and manage tools in a loop.
  • Use the Death Coin on the hardest character.
  • The 1.032 patch added menu statues: bronze for 8,000+ points, silver for 9,000+, and gold for beating 50/20.
  • 50/20 is extremely hard; Scott Cawthon published a list of the first 20 players to beat it.

A Progression Plan

Step | Target | What you are learning

1 | Each beginner preset at low levels | One mechanic at a time

2 | Two presets combined, low levels | Multitasking between monitor and office

3 | 15-20 characters at mid levels | Routines, power budgeting

4 | Challenges from the challenge menu | Themed stress tests

5 | 30+ characters, gradually raising levels | Endurance and prioritization

6 | 8,000+ points (bronze statue) | High-level consistency

7 | 9,000+ points (silver statue) | Near-max play

8 | 50/20 (gold statue) | The ultimate test

When a run fails, note which character ended it. Nearly every loss comes from one or two characters you are not handling consistently. Drop everything else to low levels and drill those until they feel automatic.

Unlocks and Lore

  • Office skins unlock as you hit higher scores, letting you change the look of the office.
  • Cutscenes unlock through play and add voiced story moments from characters across the series.
  • Voice acting comes from returning favorites and new characters, and many lines hint at deeper FNaF lore. The setting is widely read by the community as a purgatory-like place tied to the series' villain, but the game leaves it for you to piece together.

Visual and Performance Options

Patch 1.025 added an option to disable visual effects: on the character select menu, un-check the "visual effects" box. Patch 1.031 adjusted a visual effect that may improve performance. If the game stutters on an older PC, try the visual effects toggle first.

System requirements are tiny (the Steam page lists a 2 GHz CPU, 2 GB of RAM, a 1 GB graphics card and 500 MB of storage). Note that the page still lists Windows XP through 10, but the Steam client itself has only supported Windows 10 and later since 1 January 2024.

Patch History That Changes How You Play

The game got a quick run of balance and bug-fix patches in the weeks after launch, then stopped. The notes that matter for strategy:

Patch | What changed

1.024 to 1.030 | Fixes for vent-crawler behaviour, inconsistent Ballora attack timing, and assorted animatronic bugs

1.025 | Option to turn off visual effects

1.031 | Bonnet no longer gets stuck on screen or repeats nights incorrectly; Toy Chica mirror glitch and Lefty fixed; 50/20 time tracking corrected; Toy Chica and Toy Bonnie appearance rates rebalanced (fewer Toy Bonnie spawns); the block sound effect is louder; a visual effect tuned for performance

1.032 | Menu statues for high scores: bronze Freddy (8,000+), silver (9,000+) and gold (50/20)

If an old video shows a character behaving differently, it may predate these fixes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Stacking too many characters too early.
  • Leaving tools on. Every tool costs power.
  • Ignoring noise. Noise-sensitive characters punish loud offices.
  • Forgetting the music box. Puppet will get you.
  • Trusting pre-patch videos. Several characters were fixed or rebalanced in 1.024 to 1.031.
  • Leaving doors shut "just in case". It's the quickest way to run out of power.
  • Wasting the Death Coin on an easy character.

Advanced Tips

  • Create a loop. Check the most dangerous characters first each cycle.
  • Use the Heater for Rockstar Freddy when you don't have coins.
  • Use Silent Ventilation when noise is dangerous.
  • Practice with the challenges.

Crash Fixes

In August 2018, Scott Cawthon noted crash reports linked to anti-virus programs flagging the game or its save files. If the game crashes:

  • Add an exception for the game folder and saves in your anti-virus.
  • Don't disable anti-virus entirely; allow the game instead.
