A player's guide to the free classic TrackMania Nations Forever (TMNF): driving technique, the 65-track campaign and medals, online play, the editor, the community sites that keep it alive, and how it compares to modern Trackmania.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final TMNF release (Stadium "Forever", free on Steam since 2008). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's completely free. TMNF on Steam costs nothing and includes the full Stadium environment, the 65-track solo campaign, online multiplayer, the track editor, the replay editor and the paint shop.
  • Every race is a time trial against yourself. There are no collisions with other cars. Ghosts of other runs are just references.
  • Restart constantly. Trackmania is about reruns. One bad corner means restart, not "finish anyway".
  • Don't brake unless you have to. Releasing the throttle or a short tap on the brake is usually enough. Braking kills speed you can't get back.
  • Keep the car flat and straight on landings. Crooked landings lose speed and can send you off track.
  • Grass and dirt slow you down. Stay on asphalt and the boost pads.
  • Checkpoint respawns are for learning. Respawning keeps your timer running, so in a real run it's usually faster to restart.
  • Work through the campaign in order. It's a very good difficulty curve: white tracks teach the basics, black tracks test everything.
  • Watch the top replays on community sites for any track you're stuck on. Every line and trick is visible.

Controls

TMNF is simple: accelerate, brake, steer, and two respawn buttons. Keys are rebindable in the profile/input settings, and a controller or wheel works too.

Action | Common default | Notes

Accelerate | Up arrow | Hold almost all the time

Brake / reverse | Down arrow | Also triggers drifts at speed

Steer | Left / Right arrows | Keyboard steering is all-or-nothing; controllers give analog steering

Respawn at last checkpoint | Backspace or Enter | Timer keeps running

Restart the race | Delete | Full restart from the start line

Camera | Number keys | Switch between internal and external cameras

The respawn and restart keys in this table are the commonly cited defaults rather than something we could confirm against an official manual; open the input settings once and check (or rebind) them before you start grinding a track. Most top players use keyboard. Analog steering has advantages on some tracks, so try both.

Driving Technique

Lines and speed

  • Take the widest possible approach to a corner and cut the apex, like real racing.
  • Minimise steering. Every steering input costs a little speed. Straight is fastest.
  • Plan for the next corner, not the current one. Exit speed matters more than entry speed.

Drifting

  • At speed, steer and tap the brake to start a drift. Hold steering into the drift and let go of the brake.
  • Drifts are useful on tight corners, but they cost speed. Only drift when you can't make the corner without it.
  • Short, controlled drifts beat long slides.

Air and landings

  • Land with all four wheels as flat and straight as possible.
  • Avoid steering right before takeoff. A car that leaves the ramp turning tends to land crooked.
  • Big jumps often reward a slightly different line before the ramp so you land straight.

Surfaces

Surface | Behaviour

Asphalt / road | Full grip, full speed

Dirt | Slippery; car slides and slows

Grass | Heavy speed loss; avoid

Boost pads | Instant speed; hit them straight

Walls and loops | Drive through at speed to hold on

The Solo Campaign

TMNF's campaign has 65 tracks in five colour-coded series, from beginner to extreme:

Series | Tracks | Difficulty

White (A) | A01–A15 | Beginner

Green (B) | B01–B15 | Easy

Blue (C) | C01–C15 | Normal

Red (D) | D01–D15 | Difficult

Black (E) | E01–E05 | Extreme

Medals

  • Each track has Bronze, Silver and Gold medal times, plus the track's Author time (the time the track's creator drove to validate it).
  • Tracks unlock gradually: medals earned on earlier tracks open up the later ones, so you can't skip straight to the black series.
  • Aim for Gold on every track before pushing author times.
  • Beating the author time on the black series is a real accomplishment.

Campaign tips:

  • Gold the white series first. It teaches racing lines that show up everywhere later.
  • Race against your own best ghost and study leaderboard replays; they show a working line.
  • Learn tracks in sections. Use checkpoint respawns to practise the hard part, then do full runs.
  • E-series tracks are long and punishing. Break them into chunks and practise each until it's consistent.

Online Multiplayer

  • The server browser lists community-hosted servers running a mix of modes.
  • Time Attack is the most common mode: everyone drives the same track for a set time and the best time wins.
  • Rounds mode awards points per round based on finishing position. There are also Team, Laps and Cup modes.
  • TMNF and TrackMania United Forever share Stadium servers, so Nations players can compete with United players on Stadium tracks.
  • The game has official ladders for solo and multiplayer, and rankings by nation (the "Nations" in the name).

Online tips:

  • Filter servers by mode and difficulty (many are dedicated to "fullspeed", "tech", "dirt" or "RPG" style tracks).
  • Tech servers are great for learning precise driving; fullspeed servers reward nerves and straight lines.
  • Keep restarting. In Time Attack only your best time counts.

Track Editor, Replays and Paint Shop

  • Track editor: Build tracks from Stadium blocks. To publish, you must validate the track by driving it; your time becomes the author time.
  • Replay editor (MediaTracker): Create cinematic replays and intros.
  • Paint shop: Customise your car's skin.
  • Share tracks on TMNF-X (below) for others to drive.

Editor tips:

  • Start small: a short flowing track with a clear line is more fun than a huge complicated one.
  • Test your jumps many times. Inconsistent landings frustrate players.
  • Put checkpoints at sensible intervals so respawns help practice.

Community: TMNF-X and Tools

  • TMNF-X (TMNF Exchange) is the community hub for Nations Forever. At the time of research it hosted over 644,000 tracks and 3.4 million replays, plus trackpacks, leaderboards and a Discord. Use it to find tracks, download replays of top runs, and compete on its leaderboards.
  • Replays from top players are the best teachers. Load them and watch the line and inputs.
  • Tool-assisted runs exist in the community as a separate hobby. Keep tool-assisted replays out of normal leaderboards.

TMNF vs Modern Trackmania

TrackMania Nations Forever (2008) | Trackmania (2020)

Price | Free | Free starter access with paid tiers

Environments | Stadium only | Stadium-style with multiple surfaces and seasonal campaigns

Campaign | 65 fixed tracks | Seasonal campaigns plus daily Track of the Day

Community | TMNF-X, classic servers | Official clubs, ranked matchmaking, esports

Car feel | Classic Stadium car | Similar Stadium car with tweaks

Many players still love TMNF for its simple physics and huge library. Trackmania (2020) is the modern, officially supported successor.

A Practice Routine That Works

  • Pick one track you haven't golded yet.
  • Watch a top replay (TMNF-X has them for every campaign track) once, focusing on where it brakes, drifts and lands.
  • Drive the track section by section using checkpoint respawns until each section feels comfortable.
  • Switch to full runs and restart the moment you make a mistake.
  • Compare checkpoint splits. The on-screen split at each checkpoint tells you exactly which section is losing time.
  • Stop when you plateau and come back later. Trackmania improvement often shows up the next day.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Finishing bad runs. Restart immediately after a mistake.
  • Braking before every corner. Most corners can be taken with a throttle release or a short drift.
  • Oversteering. Small inputs; straight is fast.
  • Landing crooked. Adjust your line before the jump, not in the air.
  • Driving on grass to "cut". It's almost never faster.
  • Skipping the white and green series. They teach the fundamentals.

Advanced Tips

  • Watch and copy top replays input by input; the line is everything.
  • Learn to drift efficiently: tap brake, catch the drift, straighten early.
  • Practise sections with checkpoint respawns, then do clean full runs.
  • Consistency beats peaks. A reliable run you can repeat will beat a lucky one in multiplayer.
  • Tech tracks reward precision; fullspeed tracks reward trusting the track. Play both.
  • Build your own tracks to understand why some lines are fast.
