A full guide to Titan Quest Anniversary Edition: how masteries and dual-class builds work, stat and skill priorities, beginner-friendly builds, act-by-act progression through Normal, Epic, and Legendary, the four expansions, and loot and endgame tips.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Eternal Embers Update #6 (October 2022), the last listed content patch. Titan Quest II entered Early Access on 1 August 2025; the Anniversary Edition itself is no longer receiving regular updates.
At a Glance
Content | Release | What it adds
Titan Quest (base) | 2006 | Acts I–III: Greece, Egypt, the Orient; eight masteries
Immortal Throne | March 2007 | Act IV (the Underworld), Dream mastery, artifacts. Included in the Anniversary Edition
Anniversary Edition | 31 August 2016 | Remaster combining the base game and Immortal Throne; balance rework, restored multiplayer, Steam Workshop
Ragnarök | 17 November 2017 | Act V (Norse lands and Asgard), Rune mastery, higher level cap
Atlantis | May 2019 | New act in the Atlantis setting, plus the Tartarus endless mode
Eternal Embers | 3 December 2021 | Four acts in the Far East (Jade Emperor, Ten Suns, Dragon King), Neidan mastery, curse shrines and Electrum (added in 2022 updates)
Quick Start
- You pick two masteries. One at level 2, the second at level 8. Your class name comes from the combination: every single mastery and every pair has its own title, so the number of classes grows with each mastery-adding expansion.
- Invest in the mastery bar, not just skills. Each point in the mastery bar raises your stats and unlocks deeper skill tiers.
- Don't spread points thin. Max the handful of skills your build actually uses, and ignore the rest.
- Attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Health, Energy. Put most points into the stat your weapons need; add Health for survival.
- Play on Normal first. Epic and Legendary follow; they're where the real challenge (and loot) lives.
- Resistances matter on Epic and Legendary. Target high elemental, poison, and vitality resistances before tougher difficulties.
- Use the stash and the caravan driver. Store items you'll need later, especially set pieces.
- Quick item pickup and a larger stash were added in the Anniversary Edition. Check Options.
- Try the speed setting in the Anniversary Edition options if you want faster pace.
Masteries
Mastery | Source | Style
Warfare | Base | Melee weapons, dual wielding, warcries
Defense | Base | Shields, armor, survivability
Hunting | Base | Bows and spears, traps, armor-piercing attacks
Rogue | Base | Daggers, poisons, traps
Earth | Base | Fire magic, Core Dweller pet
Storm | Base | Lightning and cold magic
Nature | Base | Wolves, nymph pet, healing, buffs
Spirit | Base | Life drain, Liches, necromancy
Dream | Immortal Throne | Psionic damage, trance effects
Rune | Ragnarök | Rune magic, traps, throwing weapons
Neidan | Eternal Embers | Alchemical transmutation magic
Example class combinations
Class | Masteries
Conqueror | Defense + Warfare
Summoner | Earth + Nature
Elementalist | Earth + Storm
Stats and Skill Priorities
- Melee builds: Strength and Dexterity based on your weapon, plus Health.
- Caster builds: Intelligence and Health; Energy only if you're running out.
- Pet builds: Health and some Intelligence; pet skills scale with mastery investment.
- Skill points: Put points into the mastery bar early (it grants attributes and unlocks tiers). Then max your main attack and the key passive skills that support it.
Beginner-Friendly Builds
Build | Masteries | Why it works
Conqueror | Defense + Warfare | Sturdy melee with shields; forgiving for new players
Summoner | Earth + Nature | Pets tank and deal damage; easy to play
Elementalist | Earth + Storm | Strong area-of-effect magic
Pet-focused Nature builds | Nature + any | Nature's wolves and nymph make early acts easier
General rule: Pick one damage source (weapon, spell, or pets) and build around it.
Progression by Act
Act | Setting | Key boss notes
Act I | Greece | Telkine boss at the end of the act
Act II | Egypt | Second Telkine
Act III | The Orient (Silk Road to China) | Third Telkine, then Typhon
Act IV (Immortal Throne) | The Underworld | Hades
Act V (Ragnarök) | Norse lands and Asgard | Norse myth bosses
Atlantis | Atlantis | New bosses, plus Tartarus endless mode
Eternal Embers | Far East | Jade Emperor, Ten Suns, Dragon King of the Four Seas
Boss Tips
- Typhon: A massive fight with high damage. Bring resistances and potions; kite if needed.
- Hades: Multi-phase fight; resistances and good positioning help.
- Ten Suns: A 2022 update added a blocker door, so you can't leave the arena once the fight starts. Go in prepared.
- Dragon King and Jade Emperor: Tough late-game fights; ensure strong defenses.
Your First Few Hours
- Helos (Act I start): Pick up the starter quests and kill the satyrs and boars nearby. Level 2 arrives fast; choose your first mastery with the whole build in mind.
- Spend early skill points in the mastery bar plus one attack or pet skill. A single strong skill carries you through Greece.
- Pick up everything early, sell it at merchants, and buy a better weapon and armor once you have a few thousand gold.
- Level 8: choose your second mastery. It should cover a weakness: Defense for melee survivability, Nature for healing and pets, Spirit or Storm for extra damage.
- Activate every rebirth fountain. They're your respawn points; use the town portals to travel back to discovered locations.
- Keep a stash of potions. Health and energy potions stack; carry plenty into boss fights.
- Complete side quests. Many reward skill points or attribute points, which are worth more than they sound.
Gear Checklist Before Each Difficulty
Before... | Aim for
Epic | Resistances in the positive range for fire, cold, lightning, poison, and vitality; a weapon upgraded with relics or charms
Legendary | Much higher resistances, strong set or Legendary items, a completed artifact from the Enchanter if you have Immortal Throne content
Endgame farming | A build that clears quickly and survives bosses; consider Tartarus (Atlantis) for endless challenge
Use the character screen (a third tab was added in a 2022 update) to check stats and resistance breakdowns by hovering over them.
Difficulties
Difficulty | Changes
Normal | First playthrough; forgiving
Epic | Higher enemy stats and damage; resistances start to matter
Legendary | Highest challenge; best loot
Enemies hit much harder and resist more on each step up, so gear with resistances becomes essential by Epic.
Loot and Items
- Item rarity: Common, Magic, Rare, Epic, and Legendary.
- Set items: Complete sets give bonuses. Store pieces in your stash.
- Relics and charms: Combine them into completed relics/charms to socket into gear.
- Artifacts (Immortal Throne): Crafted from formulas and reagents at the Enchanter; powerful late-game items.
- Eternal Embers updates added audio and minimap cues when Epic or Legendary items drop, plus curse shrines that increase difficulty in exchange for Electrum, which you transmute into special orbs.
Eternal Embers Post-Launch Additions (2022)
The Eternal Embers updates changed the game for everyone who owns the expansion, and several changes affect how you play the whole campaign:
Update | Date | What it added or changed
Update #1 | 20 Jan 2022 | Blocker door in the Ten Suns fight (no escaping mid-fight), raised unique-item drop chances from boss loot, fixed Atlantis and Eternal Embers Legendary drop rates, merchants' maximum purchase price cut from 750,000 to 350,000 gold
Update #3 | 16 May 2022 | Curse Shrines in Helos (at the very start of the game) and the Electrum currency; third tab on the Character screen with stat breakdowns on hover; audio and minimap cues for Epic and Legendary drops
Update #4 | 8 Jul 2022 | New dungeons that each need three unique keys to enter, two new item sets from those dungeons, an Electrum transmuter shrine, Electrum granted per act and difficulty, and boss reworks (Talos gains full poison and vitality immunity, Tiamat and Lord of the Fjord toughened)
Update #6 | 17 Oct 2022 | Latest listed patch; notes posted in the Steam discussions
How Curse Shrines work: Activate curses at the shrines in Helos to make the game harder. While curses are active, kills grant Electrum, and more curses mean more Electrum. Curses stay on until you remove them at a cleansing shrine. Spend Electrum at the transmuter to buy Orbs that contain special gear. Orbs can roll items from expansions you don't own; those items stay unusable until you buy that DLC.
Multiplayer and Mods
- The Anniversary Edition restored multiplayer with voice chat and NAT resolving, plus Steam friend invites.
- Steam Workshop support makes mods easy to install. Many players use mods for quality-of-life or new content.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spreading skill points across too many skills. Focus beats breadth.
- Neglecting resistances. Epic and Legendary punish low resistances.
- Ignoring the mastery bar. It's a major source of stats and unlocks.
- Selling set pieces. Keep them in the stash; completing a set is valuable.
- Skipping the Enchanter. Relics, charms, and artifacts are a big part of late-game power.
Advanced Tips
- Plan your build before level 2 and level 8. Your mastery choices are the one thing you can't casually undo, so pick with the whole build in mind.
- Use the Mystic to buy back skill points (for gold) if a skill isn't pulling its weight.
- Farm Legendary bosses for top-tier loot.
- Curse shrines in Eternal Embers increase Electrum rewards for more risk.
- Titan Quest II is in Early Access if you want the modern sequel.
