A practical guide to Noble Muffins' sandbox burglary sim: how to case a house, what to steal and what to leave, how to sell loot efficiently, how to avoid the police, which tools and upgrades matter, and what the free patches and DLCs added.

Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 1.8 (Shopping Center DLC and free train heists, December 2024). Thief Simulator 3 is in development with co-op; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Case the house before you go in. Watch the residents, learn their schedule, and wait until the house is empty.
  • Check for nosy neighbors. Houses with witnesses nearby are riskier; work from the side that no one can see.
  • Use the flashlight at night. It highlights valuables and the places they are likely to be.
  • Look for shortcuts. Keys near windows, receipts in trash bins, and notes can save lockpicking or hacking time.
  • Your backpack is limited. Do not fill it with junk; prioritize high-value, small items.
  • Make quick, clean runs. Faster thefts with no one seeing you earn better ranks.
  • Sell smart. Different items sell best through different channels (the pawn shop, the online market BlackBay, parts sales).
  • Prepare electronics before selling. Phones and tablets sell for more once you remove their security.
  • Invest in tools and skills early. Better lockpicking and entry tools unlock bigger houses.
  • If you are caught, hide or bail. Hide until the search ends, or drop the loot and run.

How the Game Works

You start as a small-time thief working off a debt in a suburban neighborhood. A fence gives you jobs, and you progress through increasingly well-protected houses and neighborhoods, eventually tackling rich estates and commercial targets. Between jobs you sell loot, buy tools, and learn new skills.

The core loop

  • Scout — observe a target's residents and routine.
  • Plan — choose your entry point and time.
  • Enter — lockpick, break a window, use a key, or use a tool.
  • Loot — grab the valuables that matter.
  • Escape — leave cleanly to your car.
  • Sell — convert loot into cash through the right channel.
  • Upgrade — spend money on tools and skills.

Scouting and Planning

  • Watch the schedule. Residents come and go on routines; wait for a window when the house is empty.
  • Check the neighbors. A clear line of sight from a neighbor's window is a risk.
  • Look for cameras and alarms. Higher-end houses have security systems; plan for them.
  • Find entry options. Doors, back doors, windows, garages. Some houses leave keys hidden near windows.
  • Check trash bins. Purchase receipts and notes often reveal what is valuable inside, or codes.

Getting In

Method | Pros | Cons

Lockpicking | Quiet | Takes time; harder locks need skill and better picks

Breaking a window | Fast | Loud; neighbors may notice ("Nice throw man" for using a brick)

Found key | Instant and quiet | Only if you find one

Tools (crowbar, glass cutter and later tools) | Opens specific barriers | Some are noisy

Hacking control panels | Disables security | Needs the skill and equipment ("Hackerman" for 10 panels)

Rule of thumb: quiet entry when anyone is home or nearby; fast entry only when you are confident no one is watching.

What to Steal

  • Small, high-value items first — jewelry, electronics, collectibles.
  • Big-ticket items — TVs, consoles, paintings — are worth it if you have space and a clean exit. Achievements track TVs, consoles and paintings.
  • Junk — many items are nearly worthless and slow you down. Leave them.
  • Cars — stealing cars is possible and lucrative. You can disassemble them and sell parts online.
  • Special collectibles — for example the five Faberge Egg replicas hidden in the wealthy neighborhood the achievement calls "Richie R." ("Egg hunt").

When the backpack fills with junk, you waste precious seconds dropping it inside a house where you may be discovered.

Selling Loot

Channel | Best for

Pawn shop | Quick cash for general items; electronics after removing security

BlackBay (online market) | Items that sell better online; seasonal items; many achievements require BlackBay sales

Car parts online | Disassembled stolen cars

Passers-by | Selling stolen goods directly to people on the street

Tips:

  • Remove security from phones and tablets before pawning them.
  • Do not flood one channel with the same items; check prices.
  • Keep valuable items you need for contracts or jobs.

Police and Getting Caught

  • Residents who spot you in the act call the police.
  • Neighbors can report suspicious behavior, especially loud entries.
  • Hide until the search ends — break line of sight and stay put until they give up.
  • Drop the loot and run if you have to; losing a haul is better than being arrested.
  • Do not return immediately to a house where you were spotted.

Tools and Skills

  • Early money should go into better lockpicking and entry tools, then electronics tools for hacking and removing security.
  • Skills make you quieter, faster, and better at locks and hacking. Pick them to support your preferred approach (stealthy or fast).
  • The Shopping Center DLC (patch 1.8) adds the grappling hook, camera jammer, and metal saw.
  • NG+ was added in patch 1.06 (March 2019) along with the Cloaking Device, a late cash-sink tool; the "A what?" achievement asks you to buy it on NG+.

Neighborhoods and Locations

Area | Notes

Starting neighborhood | Modest houses; learn the basics here

Wealthy neighborhood ("Richie R." in the achievement text) | Wealthy homes; better security and better loot; the Faberge Egg hunt

Industrial St | Added in patch 1.2; industrial targets

Car Tuning Company | Added in patch 1.45

Warehouse 300 | Added in patch 1.6

The farm | Added in patch 1.7 alongside a contracts system for side jobs

Train stations and trains | Added free in patch 1.8 (train heists)

Luxury Houses DLC (March 2023) | Upscale estates, new items, new vehicles to steal and new tools

Shopping Center DLC | A new neighborhood with stores to rob; new vehicles (truck, delivery car)

Vehicles

Your vehicle is your escape and your trunk. Upgrading to a larger vehicle means more loot per trip. Stealing specific cars earns the "Car enthusiast" achievements (Bolthorn 86 Classic, Aisan Cougar, Bolthorn Family MkV, Vulcan Spectre, Kubra GTS). Other achievements ask you to steal the skid loader and the forklift, and a Christmas event asks for Santa's sleigh car.

Rank and Stealth

  • Thefts are ranked. Completing jobs quickly and without being seen gives the best result. "Sneaky sneak" asks for 10 S-rank thefts without being seen.
  • Plan for S ranks: case the house, go in with the right tools, grab only what the job needs, leave by a quiet route.

Seasonal and Event Content

Seasonal content has added themed loot and achievements: Halloween pumpkins, creepy dolls, and candy bags; Christmas presents and big toy boxes; VHS tapes to sell on BlackBay.

Achievement Checklist

Most achievements come naturally, but a handful need planning. These descriptions come from the Steam achievement list:

Achievement | Requirement | Tip

Sneaky sneak | Finish 10 S-rank thefts without being seen | Farm it on houses you already know well

Hackerman | Disable 10 control panels | Buy the hacking gear early; panels appear in better-protected houses

Nice throw man | Break a window with a brick | Do it on an empty street at night

Egg hunt | Find 5 Faberge Egg replicas in the wealthy neighborhood | Search high-end houses thoroughly with the flashlight

Crazy about cars | Steal 5 cars | Pairs well with the five Car enthusiast achievements

Skid mark / Forking workflow | Steal the skid loader / the forklift | Note where you see heavy machinery and come back with room to drive it off

A what? | Buy a cloaking device on NG+ | Save cash before starting NG+

Like candy from a baby, Creepy, Halloween is here | Sell 8 candy bags, 4 creepy dolls, 7 pumpkins on BlackBay | Halloween items; sell on BlackBay, not the pawn shop

Reverse Santa, Toys for greedy boys | Sell all presents on BlackBay; steal 6 big toy boxes | Christmas items

VHS is the best | Sell 5 VHS on BlackBay | VHS tapes arrived with the Warehouse 300 patch (1.6)

Dude, where's my sleigh? | Steal Santa's sleigh car | Christmas event vehicle

If a seasonal item is missing from your world, check whether it is tied to an event period before assuming a bug.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Going in without watching the schedule.
  • Breaking windows in front of neighbors.
  • Filling your backpack with junk.
  • Selling phones and tablets without removing security.
  • Not upgrading tools. You will stall at harder houses.
  • Panicking when spotted. Hide or drop the loot and run.
  • Returning to a hot house too soon.

Advanced Tips

  • Loot routing: plan a route through the house that ends at your exit.
  • Pre-open windows or doors for fast escapes.
  • Use found keys and codes — they are often the fastest and quietest entry.
  • Night runs plus flashlight reveal valuables quickly.
  • Stack contracts so one visit covers several objectives.
  • Car theft is a money engine once you can disassemble and sell parts.
