A full player guide to The Evil Within 2: resource management, crafting, Green Gel and Red Gel upgrades, weapons and the Warden Crossbow, stealth, exploring Union, collectibles, difficulty modes and achievements, kept light on story spoilers.
Researched September 2026 — current as of PC update 1.04 (February 2018, which added First-Person Mode); no patches since. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Explore Union's open areas. Chapters open up into larger hub-like districts with side missions and supplies. Exploring pays for itself in ammo, parts and gel.
- Use the Communicator. It points you to objectives, supplies, enemies and Resonance points (spots that reveal story and often loot). Follow off-path signals.
- Stealth first. Sneak kills save ammo. "I Am The Night" rewards 10 of them, and the Stealth tree makes them far stronger.
- Craft at workbenches. You can craft anywhere, but workbenches cost fewer materials. Save crafting for safe houses when you can.
- Spend Green Gel on Health and Stealth first. More HP and better sneak kills fix most early-game problems.
- Upgrade one or two weapons, not all. Weapon Parts are limited. Pick a main gun and the Warden Crossbow.
- Use safe houses. They have coffee (a free heal), and a mirror that takes you to Sebastian's office, where the upgrade chair lives.
- Do the side missions. Several give major rewards, including weapons.
- Burn and shock groups. Oil puddles and water are environmental weapons; use them with fire or Shock Bolts.
- Enable First-Person Mode if you prefer it. Options, then General (added in update 1.04).
Core Systems
The Communicator and Resonance
The Communicator tracks the main objective, side signals and Resonance points. Resonances pull you toward story fragments and frequently toward loot. When a new signal appears, check the map: side signals are optional content that often reward weapons, parts or gel.
Resources and crafting
You collect raw materials (gunpowder and other components) all over Union and craft them into ammo, healing items and bolts.
Where you craft | Cost
Anywhere (field crafting) | Higher material cost
Workbench | Reduced material cost
Rule of thumb: in the field, only craft what you need to survive the current fight. At a workbench, craft your reserves.
Green Gel and Red Gel
Resource | Used for
Green Gel | Buying abilities at the upgrade chair
Red Gel | Rarer; required to unlock higher-tier abilities
The upgrade chair has five ability trees:
Tree | What it does | Priority
Health | Max HP and survivability | Very high early
Stealth | Sneak kills, sneak movement, skills like Predator and Ambush | Very high
Combat | Melee, stomps, weapon handling | Medium
Recovery | Healing efficiency | Medium
Athleticism | Stamina and movement | Medium-high
A solid order: early Health upgrades, then core Stealth (so sneak kills are reliable and you can take down enemies from cover), then Athleticism for stamina, then Recovery. "Stick it in My Veins" requires every ability fully upgraded, which in practice usually means carrying progress into New Game+.
Weapons and Weapon Parts
- Weapon Parts upgrade firepower, reload speed, fire rate and ammo capacity at workbenches. High-Grade Weapon Parts are rarer and needed for bigger upgrades.
- The Warden Crossbow is the utility weapon. It fires several bolt types, including Shock Bolts (stun, extra effect on enemies in water) and Smoke Bolts (break line of sight for stealth). Bolt types are upgraded separately.
- The Sniper Rifle is among the standard firearms (the 1.03 patch notes reference aiming it); "Powerhouse" requires acquiring all standard weapons, several of which come from side content.
- Recommendation: fully upgrade one reliable gun you like plus the Warden Crossbow. Spreading parts thin leaves every gun weak.
Stealth
- Crouch-walk, stay behind enemies and use cover. Enemies have vision cones and investigate noise.
- Sneak kills are one-hit takedowns on unaware enemies.
- Bottles can be thrown to distract.
- Ambush-type skills let you kill from behind cover. "Wait For It..." rewards one Ambush kill.
- If spotted, break line of sight and wait; enemies eventually return to patrol.
Environmental kills
Setup | Effect | Achievement
Oil on the ground + fire | Burns groups | "Kick, Shoot, Burn" (2+ kills at once)
Enemy in water + Shock Bolt | Stuns them | "Shock Therapy"
Hanging lamp | Drops on enemies (Chapter 9) | "Death From Above" (2+ kills)
Stomp | Finishes downed enemies | "Bootable Offense" (15 stomp kills)
Safe Houses and Sebastian's Office
- Safe houses protect you, contain supplies, and have a coffee maker that fully heals once it has had time to brew. "Caffeine Addict" requires using every coffee maker.
- Mirrors send you to Sebastian's office in his mind. There you find the upgrade chair, and between chapters you can look at photographic slides you have collected. "Chatting With Kidman" requires talking to Kidman about all of them.
- Lockers are opened with keys found in Union. There are enough that "Half the Stash" is 16 lockers; "Locksmith" is all of them. Locker rewards are often valuable (parts, gel, ammo).
Chapter Outline (Spoiler-Light)
The campaign is split into numbered chapters (the achievement list references chapters as late as Chapter 14, and the story continues beyond it). Chapters alternate between larger explorable districts of Union and tighter, linear horror set pieces. The chapter-specific achievements below are easy to miss, so note them before you reach each chapter.
Stage | What to do
Opening chapters | Learn stealth, get the Communicator working, find your first safe house.
First open district | Big exploration hub. Do side signals, collect parts, find Resonances. Get the Warden Crossbow.
Chapter 5 | Around City Hall there is a chance to avoid unnecessary bloodshed ("Sometimes Fighting Isn't the Answer"). Sneak rather than fight.
Open districts | Side missions include "Rogue Signal" (achievement "Backup Ain't Coming"). Follow every Communicator signal.
Chapter 9 | Look for the hanging lamp opportunity: "Death From Above" needs 2+ enemies killed with it.
Chapter 11 | Watch for a chance to stop a true believer from using his favorite toy (achievement "No More Playing With Fire").
Chapter 12 | Reminisce about every moment from your past ("Melancholy Memories"). Explore every room.
Chapter 14 | "I'll Take You Down Myself" — bring your own equipment to the barbecue.
Before the late game | Side mission "The Last Step" ("Sykes Out") is another one to finish. Clear all side content before the story locks the open areas.
The main antagonists include the serial-killer photographer Stefano Valentini and Father Theodore Wallace. Allies include Juli Kidman of Mobius, Liam O'Neal, Yukiko Hoffman, Julian Sykes and Esmeralda Torres.
Missable collectibles
Collectibles include Files, Slides, Mysterious Objects, Residual Memories, locker keys and Weapon Parts. Open districts cannot always be revisited after story progress, so clear each district before moving the main story along. New Game+ lets you pick up anything you missed.
Difficulty Modes
Mode | Notes
Casual | Story-focused, more resources
Survival | The intended experience
Nightmare | Scarcer resources, tougher enemies
Classic | Mostly identical to Nightmare, but limits the number of saves and removes upgrades
Akumu | The hardest setting; anything kills you in a single hit
Achievements: "Rookie" (any difficulty), "Survivor" (Survival or higher), "Against All Odds" (Nightmare or higher). Classic and Akumu have their own challenges.
Achievements Tips
- Collectibles: "Diligent Reader" (all files), "All in the Family" (all Mysterious Objects), "Echoes Within STEM" (all Residual Memories), "Locksmith" (all lockers).
- Upgrades: "Now You're Playing with Power" (a weapon to level 3), "They Never Even Stood A Chance" (all weapons fully upgraded), "A Little Extra Kick to it" (Warden Crossbow bolts upgraded to max level), "Making Things a Little Easier" (first High-Grade Weapon Parts used), "You Got Red in You" (first Red Gel used).
- Combat counts: "Thinning Them Out" (30 kills), "Clearing a Path" (60 kills), "Powerhouse" (all standard weapons), plus the side missions "Backup Ain't Coming" (Rogue Signal) and "Sykes Out" (The Last Step).
- Files: "Doing Some Detecting" (20 files) comes naturally; "Diligent Reader" (all files) is one of the rarest achievements, so read everything you pass.
- Crafting: "Handyman" (craft every item type once).
- Stealth: "I Am The Night" (10 sneak kills), "Smoke Assassin" (3 kills using upgraded Smoke Bolts).
- Plan: play a first run on Survival while collecting, then use New Game+ to finish upgrades and mop up collectibles.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fighting everything. Ammo is limited. Sneak past or sneak-kill.
- Crafting in the field at full cost. Hold materials until a workbench unless you are in danger.
- Spreading Weapon Parts across every gun. Focus two weapons.
- Skipping side signals. They hold the best rewards.
- Moving the story on too soon. Some areas close off; clear districts first.
- Forgetting the coffee maker. Free healing every time you pass a safe house.
- Using Smoke Bolts without upgrades. Their value jumps once upgraded.
Advanced Tips
- Stomp everything that falls. Stomps finish downed enemies and save ammo.
- Shock and burn combos: lure groups into water or oil before engaging.
- Save gel for Red Gel tiers. When you know Red Gel is coming, bank Green Gel to unlock the big abilities immediately.
- Use the crossbow as crowd control, not damage. Stun, blind or separate enemies, then finish with melee or stealth.
- Pace your heals. Syringes are precious; use coffee and safe houses to top up whenever possible.
- PC keybinds: E is the default action key. Patch 1.03 fixed several prompts that ignored rebinds, so rebinding is safe on the current version.
