A practical Skyrim guide for PC: how the leveling and perk system works, strong builds, the crafting loop, questlines and missables, the Anniversary Edition and Creations, and how to keep a modded game working through updates.

Researched September 2026 — current as of update 1.7.99 (August 2026, hotfixed August 27). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Your level comes from your skills. You level up by using skills, and each level gives 1 perk point plus a choice of +10 Health, Magicka or Stamina. Play the way you want to build.
  • Pick a Guardian Stone early. The Warrior, Mage and Thief Stones sit beside the road between Helgen and Riverwood. Each makes its skill group level 20% faster, and you can switch to a better stone later.
  • Go to Whiterun after Riverwood. Deliver the news to the Jarl and do Bleak Falls Barrow (the Dragonstone). That starts the main quest and gets you your first shout.
  • Learn Unrelenting Force and Whirlwind Sprint early. Both come from the main quest and are useful for the whole game.
  • Smithing + Enchanting + Alchemy make you strong. The crafting trio outpaces any gear you'll find.
  • Save often, in multiple slots. Skyrim is buggy and quest-breaking choices exist. Don't rely on one autosave.
  • Get the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP) if you mod. It fixes thousands of bugs. Make sure the version matches your game version.
  • Don't expect Skyrim above 60 FPS by default. The game's physics are tied to frame rate. Use a mod like SSE Display Tweaks before you unlock it.

Editions: SE vs Anniversary Edition

Special Edition | Anniversary Edition (paid upgrade)

Base game + Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn | Yes | Yes

Free Creations (Survival Mode, Fishing, Saints and Seducers, Rare Curios) | Yes | Yes

All Creation Club content bundled at AE launch | No | Yes

Creations menu (buy/download creations and mods in-game) | Yes | Yes

Both run on the same executable, so AE is just extra content on SE. Bethesda also keeps releasing paid Creations made by Verified Creators. Recent ones include Legacy of Orsinium (March 2026; a voiced storyline at the Orc stronghold of Mor Khazgur with expanded mines), Heart of the Mountain (June 2026; a Void-themed story set in the Old Lands, a new world with desert, swamp and haunted-forest biomes, 40+ dungeons and the follower Audrey) and Sigil of the Fallen (June 2026; a questline starting northeast of Markarth). Treat them as optional DLC-sized add-ons.

What update 1.7.99 changed (August 2026)

  • Mod storage raised to 15 GB on PlayStation 5 and Xbox.
  • The Creation Kit can load multiple masters by default and export localized content.
  • Verified Creators can now make Creations Achievement-Friendly (Xbox) and Trophy-Friendly (PlayStation).
  • The Creations menu got bundles and "Most Popular" sorting.
  • Crash fixes, including a Virtual Keyboard crash on Steam Deck and crashes on empty Creations searches and race transformation. The August 27 hotfix fixed a PlayStation on-screen keyboard crash and an Xbox map crash.

PC modders: Every executable update breaks SKSE64 and any SKSE plugin until they're updated for the new runtime. See "Modding Safely" below.

Character Creation

  • Race: Racial bonuses are small and matter less than your perks. Pick what you like. Standouts: Breton (25% magic resistance), Nord (frost resistance, Battle Cry), Khajiit (unarmed claws, night eye, sneak bonus), Orc (Berserker Rage), High Elf (extra Magicka), Argonian (water breathing, Histskin).
  • Standing Stones: Warrior/Mage/Thief early, then switch. The Lover Stone (+15% to all skills' learning rate) is a great permanent pick. The Lord Stone suits melee tanks, The Atronach Stone mages who can handle slower Magicka regen, and The Lady Stone anyone who wants regeneration.

Leveling and Perks

  • Every skill gains XP when you use it. Your character level rises as skill levels rise.
  • Each level: 1 perk point + +10 Health, Magicka or Stamina.
  • Legendary skills: When a skill hits 100, you can make it Legendary. It resets to 15 and refunds its perks, letting you keep leveling past the normal cap.
  • Useful trainers: Each trainer teaches up to five levels per character level. You can pickpocket or take back the gold afterward, a well-known trick.
  • Stamina is for melee and running. Magicka is for casters. Health matters for everyone. A common split is putting most into your main resource and the rest into Health.

Builds

Stealth Archer (the classic)

  • Skills: Archery, Sneak, Light Armor, Alchemy (poisons), Smithing
  • Key perks: Archery's Overdraw, Eagle Eye, Steady Hand (slow time while zoomed) and Quick Shot; Sneak's Deadly Aim (3x sneak attack with bows), Muffled Movement and Shadow Warrior
  • Gear goals: Dwarven or Ebony bow early, Auriel's Bow (Dawnguard) or a crafted Dragonbone Bow later; Nightingale armor or crafted light armor
  • Why it works: Sneak attack multipliers delete most enemies before they see you

Two-Handed Warrior

  • Skills: Two-Handed, Heavy Armor, Block (or not), Smithing, Enchanting
  • Key perks: Barbarian, Champion's Stance, Devastating Blow, Great Critical Charge, Sweep; Heavy Armor's Juggernaut, Well Fitted, Conditioning
  • Shouts: Unrelenting Force, Become Ethereal, Elemental Fury
  • Gear: Daedric or Dragonbone weapons upgraded at a grindstone. Enchant armor with Fortify Two-Handed and Fortify Health/Stamina

Destruction Mage

  • Skills: Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Conjuration or Illusion, Enchanting
  • Key perks: Augmented Flames/Frost/Shock, Impact (stagger with dual-cast), Novice-to-Expert cost reductions, Destruction Dual Casting
  • Gear: Fortify Destruction on 4 slots (head, chest, ring, amulet) plus Magicka regen. With enough reduction, spells become nearly free
  • Tips: Mages struggle more at higher levels. Add Conjuration (Flame Atronach, then Dremora Lord) or Illusion (Calm, Fury) for crowd control

Spellsword / Battlemage

  • One-Handed + Destruction or Restoration, Heavy/Light Armor, Alteration
  • Flexible, strong at mid levels, and good if you can't commit to a pure build

Assassin (daggers)

  • One-Handed with Assassin's Blade (15x sneak attack with daggers), Sneak, Illusion (Muffle, Invisibility), Light Armor
  • The Dark Brotherhood's Ancient Shrouded gear and the Blade of Woe fit well

The Crafting Loop

  • Smithing: Make Iron Daggers (iron ingot + leather strip) in bulk, or craft jewelry at a forge, to level fast. Take the perk tree for your armor's material. Arcane Blacksmith lets you improve enchanted gear.
  • Enchanting: Disenchant items to learn effects, then enchant with filled soul gems (Grand souls for the best results). Soul Trap or a soul trap weapon keeps gems topped up. Take Enchanter, Insightful Enchanter, Extra Effect.
  • Alchemy: Brew Fortify Smithing and Fortify Enchanting potions. Wear Fortify Alchemy gear when brewing and Fortify Smithing gear when smithing. Leveling Alchemy also makes money, since potions sell well.
  • Loop: Better Alchemy, Enchanting and Smithing gear make each other stronger. This is the core power curve of the game.

Note: The infinite Fortify Restoration potion loop is a known exploit. It makes numbers absurd and can break the game's balance, so use it knowingly.

Main Questlines

Questline | Start | Notes

Main Quest | Helgen to Riverwood to Whiterun | Unlocks shouts, dragons, Paarthurnax decision

Civil War | Join the Imperials (Solitude) or Stormcloaks (Windhelm) | Locks some cities and Jarls. Choose once

Companions | Jorrvaskr, Whiterun | Werewolf questline, good for warriors

College of Winterhold | Winterhold | Mage questline, can be done by anyone

Thieves Guild | Brynjolf in Riften | Nightingale armor, Riften's economy

Dark Brotherhood | "Innocence Lost": rumors about Aventus Aretino in Windhelm | You can instead destroy the Brotherhood, which locks out the questline

Dawnguard (DLC) | Near Fort Dawnguard or approached by Dawnguard | Choose Dawnguard or Vampires. The Vampire side gives Vampire Lord

Dragonborn (DLC) | Cultists ambush you once you're far enough into the main quest, then Solstheim | Miraak, Black Books, the Bend Will shout

Hearthfire (DLC) | Buy land from Falkreath, Dawnstar or Morthal Jarls | Build and customize homes; adopt children

Missables and One-Way Choices

  • Civil War side: Locks the other faction's quests and can change Jarls.
  • Dark Brotherhood: Destroying it removes the questline.
  • Dawnguard side: Pick once.
  • Paarthurnax: The Blades demand you kill him. Refusing locks the Blades' later quests. Killing him removes his dialogue.
  • Thieves Guild vs. Dark Brotherhood ordering: Some quests (for example with Maven Black-Briar) interact across guilds. Finish one guild before starting the other if you want to avoid conflicts.
  • The Black Star (Azura) or The Ebony Blade (Mephala) and other Daedric artifacts require specific choices. Look up the quest if you want a specific reward.
  • Blood on the Ice in Windhelm is notoriously buggy. Save before each step, and USSEP fixes many issues.

Money Makers

  • Alchemy potions, especially Fortify/Restore potions you make with gathered ingredients.
  • Smithing and enchanting jewelry and gear and selling it. Take the Speech perks for better prices and investment.
  • Dungeon loot: Dwarven metal items are heavy but valuable, and you can smelt them.
  • Transmute Mineral Ore (Alteration) turns iron into silver into gold ore.
  • Merchant gold resets every 48 in-game hours. Spread sales across several merchants.

Houses

  • Breezehome (Whiterun) is the first you can buy. Also Honeyside (Riften), Proudspire Manor (Solitude), Hjerim (Windhelm), Vlindrel Hall (Markarth).
  • Hearthfire homes (Lakeview Manor, Windstad Manor, Heljarchen Hall) are built from scratch and have more features.
  • Marriage: Buy an Amulet of Mara from Maramal in Riften and wear it to talk to eligible NPCs.

Modding Safely (PC)

  • Mod managers: Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex. Keep your load order managed and sorted with LOOT.
  • Script Extender: SKSE64 must match your exact game version. After a game update, wait for SKSE and your SKSE plugins (and Address Library) to update before launching modded.
  • Protect big load orders: Use Steam's update settings (for example "only update when I launch"), launch through your mod manager, and back up your game folder before updates. Community downgrade tools exist, but they aren't official.
  • Performance and fixes: USSEP, SSE Engine Fixes, SSE Display Tweaks (high refresh rates safely), and a crash logger make troubleshooting much easier.
  • Creations vs Nexus mods: In-game Creations are curated and keep achievements for achievement-friendly content. Nexus mods are broader and usually disable achievements unless you use a mod like Achievements Mods Enabler.
  • Don't uninstall script-heavy mods mid-playthrough. It can break saves. Start a new game after major load order changes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leveling non-combat skills with no combat ability. Leveling only crafting makes enemies scale while you stay weak in fights. Keep your combat skills moving.
  • Spreading perks everywhere. Focus 2-3 combat skills plus one support tree early.
  • Ignoring armor ratings. Upgrade and enchant your gear. Found loot falls behind quickly.
  • Picking a Civil War side on a whim. It changes cities and quest options.
  • Overloading on heavy loot. Use a follower or horse. Followers carry items.
  • Running unmatched SKSE versions after an update. That's the most common cause of crashes.
  • Only one save file. Keep several and rotate them.

Advanced Tips

  • Sneak attack multipliers make dagger and bow builds the highest damage in the game. Pair with Illusion Muffle/Invisibility.
  • Dual-casting with Impact stunlocks most enemies as a mage.
  • Slow Time + Steady Hand stack for archers.
  • Enchant for cost reduction as a mage. Four slots at 25% or more each make the school almost free.
  • Use the Lover Stone long term if you've finished your targeted skill boosts.
  • Dremora Lord summons carry a mage through high-level content.
  • Follower tips: Lydia (Whiterun), Serana (Dawnguard) and Mjoll are common picks. Serana is one of the strongest, especially for Vampire playthroughs.
  • Difficulty: Legendary difficulty makes enemies much tougher. Increase it after you've built your crafting loop.

FAQ

What's the latest Skyrim SE version? Update 1.7.99 (August 2026), hotfixed August 27, 2026.

Is the Anniversary Edition worth it? It adds all Creation Club content bundled at AE launch. It's worth it if you want lots of extra quests, homes and gear without mods. It's not needed for the core game.

Why did my mods stop working? A game update changed the executable. Wait for SKSE64, Address Library and your SKSE plugins to update, or restore a backup of the previous version.

What's the best early weapon? Craft or upgrade whatever you can at a forge. Early on, a Steel or Dwarven weapon improved by Smithing does the job.

How do I get the Ebony Blade? Do the Daedric quest "The Whispering Door" in Dragonsreach, Whiterun. It needs level 20 or higher and some main quest progress.

What's the best build for a first playthrough? The stealth archer is easiest. Two-handed warrior is the most straightforward melee build.

Can I get achievements with mods? Achievement-friendly Creations keep them. Most Nexus mods disable achievements unless you use an achievement enabler mod.
