Everything you need to get through all four Resident Evil 6 campaigns on PC: the combat system the game never explains well, skill builds, campaign order, extra modes, and fixes for running a 2013 port on a modern machine.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (last content patch April 2013, Windows 7 and older dropped from official support in April 2022). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Play the campaigns in order: Leon, Chris, Jake, then Ada. Ada's campaign only unlocks once the other three are finished, and the story makes far more sense in that order.
  • Quick Shot is your best friend. Holding aim and tapping fire at the same time snaps a stagger shot onto the nearest enemy without aiming. It costs stamina but staggers almost anything, setting up a melee finisher.
  • Melee is free damage. Stunned enemies (after a headshot, leg shot, or Quick Shot) can be finished with a context melee that often kills outright and saves ammo.
  • Watch the Combat Gauge. The segmented bar next to your health drains when you melee or Quick Shot. Let it refill before you spam; running dry leaves you gasping and helpless.
  • Mix herbs into tablets. Green and red herbs are combined into tablets stored in a pill case. One tablet restores one health block; pop them early rather than waiting for "Dying" state.
  • Spend skill points between chapters. Skill points drop from enemies and crates. Buy skills from the chapter-select screen, not mid-mission.
  • Learn to dodge-roll and slide. Moving while aiming, rolling in any direction, and sliding into enemies are what separate RE6 from older entries. Crouch-dodge and roll out of grabs.
  • Use your partner. The AI partner never runs out of ammo, but it can still go down: if either of you enters the Dying state and isn't revived in time, it's game over. In co-op, revive each other quickly.
  • Turn off Motion Blur and tweak the camera. The default over-the-shoulder camera is tight; widen the field of view and swap sides in Options if you feel boxed in.

Campaigns at a Glance

Campaign | Protagonists | Setting | Style

Leon | Leon S. Kennedy and Helena Harper | Tall Oaks (USA), then Lanshiang | Closest to classic horror: zombies, dark corridors, set pieces

Chris | Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans | Edonia, then Lanshiang | Military action, cover shooting, J'avo soldiers

Jake | Jake Muller and Sherry Birkin | Edonia, then Lanshiang | Chase sequences, stealth, hunted by the Ustanak

Ada | Ada Wong (solo; optional "Agent" co-op partner) | Links all three stories | Puzzles, stealth, crossbow

Each campaign has five chapters plus a shared Prologue. The stories cross over at key moments; in co-op these Crossover sections can join up to four online players together.

Core Mechanics

Health and Healing

  • Your health is split into blocks. Taking damage drains a block; a partially drained block slowly regenerates.
  • Green Herb: restores health when converted into tablets.
  • Red Herb: combine with green for more tablets.
  • Combine herbs in the inventory, then move them into the tablet case. Press the heal button to swallow one tablet (one block).
  • When you hit Dying, you can still crawl and shoot a handgun. Your partner can revive you; in solo, the AI will come.

Combat Gauge (Stamina)

  • Melee strikes and Quick Shots consume segments.
  • The gauge refills over time when you stop using it.
  • The Combat Gauge Boost skill speeds up refill.

Movement Toolkit

Action | How it works | Use it for

Quick Shot | Aim + fire together | Instant stagger on the nearest target

Dodge/Roll | Aim + move + dodge input | Escaping lunges, repositioning

Slide | Sprint + dodge input | Knocking down J'avo, closing gaps

Quick Turn | Back + sprint | Escaping grabs and chasing threats

Take Cover | Near cover while aiming | Chris's gun battles and sniper sections

Counter | Melee just before an enemy hits | Very high damage, instant kills on many foes

Lie Down | Dodge and stay prone | Shooting from the ground after a roll

Counters are the hidden skill of RE6. Hitting melee right as a zombie or J'avo swings triggers a counter animation that deals massive damage and costs no ammo. Practise it early on Normal.

Enemies

  • Zombies (Leon's campaign): slow, grab-happy, some sprint. Headshot then melee.
  • J'avo (Chris and Jake): C-virus soldiers who use guns and mutate when shot in specific body parts. Shooting a limb can trigger a mutation (wings, shields, extended arms). Aim for the head to avoid giving them new tools.
  • Chrysalids: cocoons that hatch into larger B.O.W.s. Destroy them before they finish.
  • Ustanak: Jake's stalker. Mostly a chase threat; you cannot permanently kill it until the story says so.

Skills System

Skills are bought with skill points and equipped in Skill Sets. You start with one set of three slots; completing campaigns unlocks more sets you can swap between mid-mission. Some skills have multiple levels, and higher levels cost significantly more points.

Skill | What it does | When to take it

Firearm | Raises firearm damage | Always strong; core pick for any set

Melee | Raises melee damage | Great with the counter/finisher playstyle

Defense | Reduces damage taken | Veteran and above

Lock-On | Narrows the reticle for steadier aim | New players

Critical Hit | Raises critical headshot chance | Mid-game headshot builds

Piercing | Bullets pass through more targets | Crowd-heavy chapters

Quick Reload | Faster reloads | Magnum and shotgun users

Ammo pickup increases (one per weapon type) | More ammo of that type drops | Early game, ammo shortages

Combat Gauge Boost | Faster stamina refill | Melee-focused builds

Recovery | Health regenerates faster | Solo on higher difficulties

Field Medic | Revive partners with more health | Co-op

Rock Steady | Easier to escape grabs | Zombie-heavy sections

Breakout | Quicker escape from grabs | Pairs with Rock Steady

Eagle Eye | Adds zoom level to sniper scopes | Chris and Ada sniper sections

Last Shot | Extra damage with the last round in a magazine | Magnum/shotgun builds

Team-Up | Bonus damage when near your partner | Co-op

Infinite Ammo (per weapon type) | Unlimited ammo for one weapon class | Late-game unlocks; expensive but game-changing for replays

  • First playthrough: Firearm, an ammo pickup increase for your main weapon, Lock-On. Maximises ammo and keeps your shots steady.
  • Melee and counter build: Melee, Combat Gauge Boost, Defense. Pairs perfectly with Quick Shot staggers.
  • Veteran/Professional: Firearm, Defense, Critical Hit or Recovery.
  • Farming points: replay a short, enemy-dense chapter you know well on a higher difficulty.

Skill points drop from defeated enemies and breakable objects; higher difficulties pay out more.

Weapons Worth Knowing

Weapon type | Examples | Notes

Handguns | Wing Shooter (Leon) | Leon's dual Wing Shooters are his signature; save rifle ammo by using handguns on zombies

Shotguns | Hydra, Assault Shotgun | The triple-barrel Hydra is excellent for close crowds

Rifles | Anti-Materiel Rifle, Semi-Auto Sniper | Critical for Chris and Piers sniper sections

Magnums | Lightning Hawk, Elephant Killer | Reserve for bosses

Explosives | Grenade Launcher, Remote Bomb, hand grenades | Best on Chrysalids and grouped J'avo

Unique | Crossbow (Ada), Jake's bare fists | Jake's martial arts melee is the strongest melee in the game

Each character has their own loadout; you pick up character-appropriate weapons as you go.

Campaign Tips

Leon

  • Chapter 1 opens slow; Tall Oaks is the most "survival horror" section in the game. Use the melee finisher on every stunned zombie.
  • Simmons fights appear in multiple forms across the campaign. Shoot the glowing weak points, avoid getting cornered, and use explosives in the later encounters.
  • Leon's campaign has the most QTE-heavy vehicle and chase sequences; mashing is less important than hitting the direction prompts quickly.

Chris

  • Play it like a cover shooter: use cover, pick heads, avoid rushing.
  • Piers's rifle has a thermal scope that shows enemy weak points. Swap it on in dark sections.
  • The Haos boss fights reward patience; target the exposed core when it opens.

Jake

  • Jake's melee is unarmed martial arts. You can hold the melee button for charged strikes. Build around melee skills.
  • The Ustanak sections are about running and environmental kills, not trading bullets.
  • Some of Jake's chapters include stealth sections that punish noise; take out enemies with stealth takedowns from behind.

Ada

  • Solo by default; the Agent partner can be controlled by a second player but is non-canonical.
  • The crossbow with explosive bolts is your multi-tool. Ammo is scarce, so pick shots carefully.
  • More puzzle-heavy: read notes and scan the environment for switches and mechanisms.

Difficulty Modes

Difficulty | Notes

Amateur | Heavy aim assist; story-focused

Normal | Balanced first run

Veteran | Enemies deal more damage, more aggressive

Professional | Unlocked after clearing; very punishing, partner revives are slower

No Hope | Added post-launch; extreme damage and enemy aggression

Beating chapters on higher difficulties gives more skill points per pickup and more achievements.

Extra Modes

  • The Mercenaries: Score attack against waves, with combos extending your timer. Kill quickly, chain combos, and break time bonuses. The PC version includes No Mercy, a special mode starring the Left 4 Dead 2 survivors (added in the April 2013 update) that throws hundreds of enemies at you.
  • Agent Hunt: Join another player's campaign as an enemy creature and try to kill them. Unlocks after you complete the main campaigns. Great fun when servers have players; the pool is small on PC in 2026, so expect wait times.
  • Onslaught, Predator, Survivors: Multiplayer modes that arrived as DLC. Onslaught is two-player versus waves; Predator has one player as the Ustanak; Survivors is deathmatch.

Collectibles and Achievements

  • Serpent Emblems are hidden in every chapter of every campaign. Shoot them to collect. They unlock figures and special content, and are the main collectible chase for completionists.
  • Many achievements are tied to clearing each campaign on specific difficulties, completing Mercenaries maps with high ranks, and collecting all emblems.
  • Co-op makes No Hope and Professional clears more manageable.

PC Tips and Fixes

  • Windows 10/11: Capcom officially dropped Windows XP, Vista, and 7 support on April 24, 2022. The game runs on current Windows, but support only covers previously known issues.
  • Frame rate: The game was designed around 60 FPS; if you uncap it and see odd QTE or physics behaviour, cap back to 60.
  • Controller: Xbox pads work out of the box; for PlayStation pads, use Steam Input.
  • Crashes on startup: Try running in windowed mode first, updating GPU drivers, and verifying files via Steam.
  • Out of memory errors: Fixed for most GPUs in the April 2013 patch; if you see them, lower texture quality.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spamming Quick Shot until your gauge is empty. You will be helpless mid-horde. Use it deliberately.
  • Shooting J'avo limbs randomly. Leg and arm shots trigger mutations that make them more dangerous. Headshots are cleaner.
  • Hoarding tablets. Healing earlier keeps you out of the Dying state and saves time.
  • Ignoring counters. Counter attacks trivialise many enemy types.
  • Buying expensive skills too early. Cheaper utility skills like the ammo pickup increases pay for themselves.
  • Skipping Ada's campaign. It explains key plot points and is required for full completion.

Advanced Tips

  • Quick Shot cancel: Quick Shot into a melee finisher, then roll out. Chaining these on a group keeps them staggered.
  • Slide-shoot: Sliding into an enemy group and firing while prone keeps you out of their attack arcs.
  • Counter windows vary by enemy. Learn them on zombies and basic J'avo; they're the easiest.
  • Farming: Replay short, enemy-dense chapters on a higher difficulty to rack up points quickly for the expensive skill tiers.
  • Mercenaries combos: Melee finishers give more time. Keep the combo counter alive by chaining kills within its time window.
  • Partner commands: In solo, stay close so the AI partner follows up your staggers with its own damage.

FAQ

Can I play Resident Evil 6 solo? Yes. The AI takes over your partner. Ada's campaign is solo by default, with an optional Agent partner for co-op.

Is Resident Evil 6 split-screen on PC? Local co-op split-screen is supported on PC with a controller for the second player; online co-op works through Steam.

How do I unlock Ada Wong's campaign? Complete the Leon, Chris, and Jake campaigns.

Are RE6's online servers still up? The game uses Steam for matchmaking. Co-op and Mercenaries online still work, but the player base is small in 2026, so invite friends rather than relying on random matchmaking.

What's the best order to play? Leon, Chris, Jake, then Ada. Some prefer Jake first for action, but Leon gives the clearest introduction to the C-virus outbreak.

How long is Resident Evil 6? Each campaign runs several hours, and the whole package is one of the longest Resident Evil games. Expect well over 20 hours for all four campaigns.
