NBA 2K24's online servers have been shut down. This guide covers what you can still play on PC, how the gameplay works, and tips for offline modes. If you want online NBA 2K on PC, it points you to the newer games.
Researched September 2026. NBA 2K24 is delisted and its online servers have been off since 31 December 2025. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status: 2K removed NBA 2K24 from sale on Steam on 30 October 2025. All multiplayer servers shut down on 31 December 2025, and the store page says that after that date "all game functions requiring online servers will no longer function." You can only play it if you already own it, and only in modes that don't need 2K's servers.
What still works and what doesn't
Mode/feature | Status after 31 Dec 2025 | Notes
Play Now (quick games, NBA/WNBA/classic teams) | Offline, works | Includes local multiplayer and split-screen on one PC
Mamba Moments (Kobe Bryant challenges) | Offline content | Recreate Kobe's classic performances
Franchise modes | Offline | See the PC note below
Blacktop / local exhibition | Offline | Quick pick-up games
MyCAREER | Relies heavily on online services (VC, the Neighborhood) | The Neighborhood, Pro-Am, Rec and online VC are gone. Expect it to be unusable or badly limited.
MyTEAM | Online-only card mode | Gone, including the salary cap mode
Online Play Now, ranked, Pro-Am, Rec | Online | Gone
Roster updates, Locker Codes, VC purchases | Online | Gone. Your rosters are frozen at the last update you downloaded.
PC version note: NBA 2K24 on PC was built on the previous-generation version of the game. It didn't have the ProPLAY animation technology from the PS5/Xbox Series versions, which got a lot of criticism at launch. 2K only brought the "New Gen" version to PC with NBA 2K25, which also added MyNBA, The W and The City on PC. That's why PC franchise options in 2K24 are the older-style franchise modes, not the current-gen MyNBA Eras.
Quick Start
- Accept that it's an offline game now. Play Now, the franchise modes and Mamba Moments are what you have. If you want an online 2K Neighborhood, you need a newer NBA 2K game.
- Use a controller. Keyboard works, but 2K's shooting, Pro Stick moves and defense are designed for a gamepad.
- Learn your shot timing in Freestyle/practice first. Every jumper uses a shot meter and timed release, and timing differs between players.
- Play through the post and pick-and-roll. The AI defends isolation dribbling well. Screens and quick ball movement create easier shots.
- Keep your hands up on defense. Stay between your man and the basket. Reaching or button-mashing steals gets you fouled and beaten off the dribble.
- Tune the difficulty and sliders. Offline you control the experience. Raise difficulty (Pro, All-Star, Superstar, Hall of Fame) as you improve and tweak sliders for realism.
- Back up your saves and rosters. No roster updates will come from 2K anymore. Keep copies of your custom rosters and franchise saves.
Core Gameplay
Default controller layout (Xbox naming)
2K has changed specific inputs from year to year, and you can view and remap them in the in-game controller settings. This is the common layout:
Action | Input
Move | Left stick
Sprint | RT
Shoot | X (hold and release) or the right stick (Pro Stick)
Pass | A
Bounce pass | B
Lob pass | Y
Icon pass (choose receiver) / call for screen | Bumpers (LB/RB); check the preset in Controller Settings
Dribble moves | Right stick (Pro Stick)
Post up | LT
Intense defense | LT
Steal / block | X / Y
Check the in-game Controller Settings menu rather than trusting any list, since presets (Classic, Pro Stick variants) change what the buttons do.
Shooting
- Hold shoot to start the motion and release at the shot meter's target. The window is tighter for worse shooters and contested shots.
- Shot quality depends on openness, player ratings, fatigue and whether you're moving. A wide-open catch-and-shoot beats a stepback over a defender almost every time.
- Turn on shot feedback in settings so you know whether you released early or late.
Dribbling and moves
The Pro Stick is used for size-ups, crossovers, behind-the-backs and hesitations. 2K24 added a large number of new dribble moves and changed dribble combos. Chain two or three simple moves to create space rather than doing long combos. In 2K, stamina drains quickly with fancy dribbling.
Defense
- On-ball: use intense D, stay in front and contest shots with your hands up. Don't jump at every pump fake.
- Interior defense was reworked in 2K24. Being in position and contesting on time beats spamming the block button.
- Off-ball: control a help defender or your big man and stay near the paint.
- Switch players to whoever is closest to the ball.
Takeover and badges
Players have badges (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Hall of Fame) that boost specific skills, such as finishing, shooting, playmaking and defense. Takeover builds as a player does well and gives a temporary boost when you activate it. Look at your stars' badges to see what they do best, and play them to their strengths.
Offline Modes in Depth
Play Now
Pick any NBA, WNBA or classic team. Useful for:
- Learning teams and trying the all-time classic rosters.
- Couch co-op and head-to-head games on one PC with two controllers.
- Practising a specific playstyle before starting a franchise.
Mamba Moments
This single-player mode celebrates Kobe Bryant. You recreate key performances from different parts of his career, from young phenom to one of the league's all-time scorers. Each game has objectives. Read them before tip-off. They often ask for specific stat lines or scoring feats, not just a win. It replaced the Jordan-style challenges from earlier editions.
Franchise modes
Run a team through seasons: trades, free agency, the draft, player progression and team finances. Tips:
- Draft on potential, not only overall rating.
- Watch the salary cap and luxury tax before taking on long contracts.
- Simulate games you don't care about and play the big ones.
- Adjust league settings (trade logic, injuries, progression) for the realism you want.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying a used key or gift expecting online play. There is none. Online features ended on 31 December 2025.
- Expecting ProPLAY on PC. The PC version was the previous-generation build.
- Holding sprint all game. Your players tire, and tired players miss more shots.
- Spamming steals. You'll foul and leave your man open.
- Forcing contested shots. Swing the ball for an open look.
- Ignoring sliders. Offline you can fix anything you think is unrealistic.
- Not backing up rosters/saves before messing with files or mods.
Advanced Tips
- Pick-and-roll reads: if the big man's defender drops back, pull up. If he switches onto your guard, attack the mismatch or pass to the rolling big man.
- Use timeouts and substitutions to manage stamina and fouls in close games.
- Custom rosters: community roster files and edits kept being shared after launch. Only download from reputable communities and back up your originals first.
- Frame rate and input: set a stable frame-rate cap and turn off in-game V-Sync if you use an adaptive-sync monitor. Stable frame pacing makes shot timing much more consistent.
- Mamba Moments grinding: replay the objectives you missed. Knowing which quarter each goal needs lets you plan when to go for points.
Offline Challenges That Keep It Fresh
With online modes gone, the replay value is in what you set up yourself:
- Classic-team tournaments. Build a bracket of all-time teams in Play Now and play it out. Great for couch sessions with a friend on a second controller.
- Franchise rebuilds. Take the worst roster in the league and try to win a title within a set number of seasons, with trade logic set to realistic so the AI doesn't accept lopsided deals.
- Realism sliders. Lower three-point success or raise fatigue effects and see whether you can still win with a modern pace-and-space offense.
- Mamba Moments clean sweeps. Go back and hit every objective in every game, not just the win.
- Difficulty ladder. Win a series on each difficulty from Pro up to Hall of Fame with the same team before moving up.
Troubleshooting After the Shutdown
- Online prompts or errors at launch. The game may still try to reach 2K's servers when it starts or when you open an online menu. Dismiss the message and use the offline modes; online-only menus simply won't load.
- Missing features. If a menu option is greyed out or loops back to the main menu, it most likely needed the servers. Don't reinstall expecting it to come back.
- Controller not detected. Use Steam Input (Properties > Controller) or the game's own controller settings, and plug the pad in before launching.
- Saves. Keep a copy of your franchise saves and custom rosters outside the game folder before verifying files, reinstalling or trying mods.
