Everything you need to go from your first Chatacabra to farming Arch-Tempered and Gogmazios hunts: weapons, core combat systems, progression, gear crafting, and the current endgame loop.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Ver. 1.041 (the Title Update 4 cycle, the last major free update before the Ascendance expansion). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Pick one weapon and commit through Low Rank. All 14 weapon types are viable. Use the Training Area (accessible from the menu) to learn the core combo, then take it into the story.
  • Carry two weapons. Your Seikret holds a second weapon you can swap to mid-hunt. A common setup is your main weapon plus a ranged option (Bow or a Bowgun) or a second element for monsters your main weapon struggles against.
  • Learn Focus Mode and wounds early. Focus Mode lets you aim attacks precisely; hitting a wounded part with your weapon's Focus Strike pops the wound for big damage and often a flinch. This is the single biggest damage lever in the game.
  • Eat before every serious hunt. Meals give HP/Stamina and damage/defense buffs. In the field you can grill meat with the BBQ Spit, and camps let you eat full meals.
  • Use Pop-up Camps. You can set small camps in each locale to fast-travel, restock, and change gear. Ver. 1.041 raised the Pop-up Camp limit for the Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, and Oilwell Basin.
  • Upgrade armor, not just weapons. Low-defense armor is the most common reason new hunters cart in High Rank. Spend Armor Spheres on your current set.
  • Fire SOS flares and use Support Hunters. If you are stuck, NPC Support Hunters and other players will join; there is no shame in it, especially for new monsters.
  • Skills matter more than rarity. A lower-rarity set with Weakness Exploit and Agitator often out-damages a shiny new set with random skills.
  • Do not skip optional quests. Side missions unlock facilities, Palico gear, the Grill, and upgrades for your Seikret and camps.

The 14 Weapons at a Glance

Dual Blades | Relentless, stamina-based | Easy–Medium | Demon Mode; element and status friendly

Hammer | Blunt damage, KOs to the head | Medium | Rewards reading the monster; power and courage forms

Hunting Horn | Support songs plus solid damage | Medium | Echo Bubbles and self buffs; great in multiplayer

Lance | Guarding, pokes, counters | Medium | Perfect Guard window is generous; steady and safe

Gunlance | Shelling, guarding | Medium–Hard | Wyvernfire and Wyrmstake; big burst damage

Heavy Bowgun | Slow, heavy ranged | Medium | Powerful focus/ignition modes; strong in groups

Bow | Mobile ranged, charge shots | Medium | Tracer arrows and coatings; strong elemental output

Tip: Wilds brought guard counters and "Perfect Guard" timing to shield weapons, and many weapons have Offset attacks that knock a monster over if timed into its attack. Learn your weapon's defensive tool early.

Core Combat Systems

Focus Mode, Wounds, and Focus Strikes

  • Wounds form on monster parts after you deal enough damage there, or through environmental damage and turf wars. Wounded parts take extra damage and show up as red markings in Focus Mode.
  • Focus Strike is a weapon-specific move that destroys wounds for a large hit. It often causes a flinch, giving you a free punish window.
  • Some wounds become scars after being popped, which you cannot re-wound until they heal. Spread wounds across different parts in long fights.
  • In multiplayer, coordinate: popping every wound immediately is not always optimal, but on public hunts it is usually fine.

Offsets, Power Clashes, and Perfect Guards

  • Offset attacks meet a monster attack head-on and can topple it if timed correctly.
  • Power Clash happens when a guarding weapon blocks a big attack; mash the prompt to push back.
  • Perfect Guard: guarding at the last moment reduces chip damage and stamina cost, and enables follow-ups for shield weapons.

Mounting, Traps, and the Slinger

  • Aerial attacks and ledge jumps lead to mounts. While mounted you can target a weak point and even steer the monster into walls or other monsters.
  • The Slinger fires ammo you pick up in the environment (stones, dragonite, flash, etc.) and can drop hazards like hanging rocks onto monsters.
  • Environmental traps such as falling rocks, vines, and floodwater deal big damage; look for highlighted objects in Focus Mode.
  • Capture a monster by weakening it (it limps away to rest, and the game flags it as capturable), then use a Shock or Pitfall Trap and two Tranq Bombs. Captures often give slightly different reward rolls.

Seikret and Field Flow

  • Your Seikret auto-pathfinds to tracked monsters. You can sharpen, use items, and even heal while riding.
  • It carries your secondary weapon, letting you swap without going back to camp.
  • Upgrades to the Seikret and your Palico come from side missions; do them as they appear.

Locales and Environment

The Forbidden Lands are split into five main locales:

Locale | Main theme | Signature monsters

Windward Plains | Open grassland and sandstorms | Rey Dau, Doshaguma, Balahara

Scarlet Forest | Dense forest and flooding | Uth Duna, Congalala, Lala Barina

Oilwell Basin | Oil and fire | Nu Udra, Ajarakan, Rompopolo

Iceshard Cliffs | Frozen cliffs | Jin Dahaad, Hirabami, Blangonga

Ruins of Wyveria | Ancient Guardian ruins | Guardian monsters and Zoh Shia

Each locale cycles through Fallow, Inclemency, and Plenty conditions. Inclemency brings extreme weather and the locale's Apex monster out in force; Plenty increases gatherables and makes monsters easier to find. Some materials only appear under specific conditions, so check the map when a material is marked as rare.

Progression Path

  • Low Rank story – learn the systems, collect materials, build a solid Low Rank armor set.
  • High Rank – unlocks after the story's main arc; monsters hit much harder, and you build new armor with better skills and decoration slots.
  • Tempered monsters – stronger variants that drop Artian parts and better decorations.
  • Arch-Tempered monsters – the hardest event/permanent quests; drop top-tier armor versions. Ver. 1.041 (February 2026) added Arch-Tempered Arkveld as a permanent Event Quest and permanent 10-star Arch-Tempered hunts for Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nu Udra, and Jin Dahaad.
  • Title Update monsters – Mizutsune, Lagiacrus, Seregios, Omega Planetes (Final Fantasy XIV collab), and Gogmazios (Title Update 4, Ver. 1.040, December 2025). Title Update 4 also added Tempered versions of nine monsters as 9-star quests.

Hunter Rank gates

Several post-launch hunts require a minimum HR. Gogmazios was listed as HR 100+ when Title Update 4 launched. If a quest is greyed out, keep doing optional and investigation quests to raise HR.

Gear: Weapons, Armor, Talismans

Weapons

  • Tree weapons are crafted and upgraded from monster materials. Good early picks are whatever element your target monster is weak to.
  • Artian Weapons are built from Artian parts dropped by Tempered monsters and customized with element, rarity, and reinforcement bonuses. They became the endgame standard in High Rank.
  • Gogma Artian Weapons (Title Update 4) use Gogmazios materials and are the current best-in-slot for most weapon types. They carry their own set bonuses on top of stat rolls, which is why they dominate current build lists.
  • Ver. 1.041 added a Melding Pot option to meld Gogma materials; use it rather than hoarding.

Armor and Transcendence

  • Armor comes in alpha and beta versions: alpha tends to have more skills, beta more decoration slots.
  • Armor Transcendence (Transcendent upgrades at the Smithy, Ver. 1.041) lets you push older armor above its base limits, so favorite sets stay relevant in the endgame.
  • Set bonuses (from wearing multiple pieces of a monster's set) and group skills are the backbone of endgame builds.

Talismans

  • Appraised Talismans (added in a 2025 post-launch update) roll random skills and slots.
  • Timeworn Charms (Ver. 1.041) are an additional appraisal item from quest rewards with better odds of high-rarity talismans. A great charm can free up several decoration slots in your build.

Skill Priorities

Most damage builds want the same core skills. Use this as a checklist.

Skill | What it does | Priority

Weakness Exploit | More affinity on weak points and wounds | Top for nearly all weapons

Agitator | Attack and affinity while the monster is enraged | Top

Critical Boost | Bigger critical hits | Top once affinity is high

Maximum Might | Affinity bonus with full stamina | High

Burst | Stacking buff from landing hits | High (especially fast weapons)

Peak Performance | Attack bonus at full HP | Medium

Handicraft / Razor Sharp / Master's Touch | Sharpness management | Weapon-dependent

Element attack up | Boosts elemental damage | High for Dual Blades, Bow, SnS

Divine Blessing / Evade Window / Guard | Survival | Keep some until you are comfortable

Set bonuses and group skills commonly used in current builds

  • Gore Magala's Tyranny – affinity-focused bonus; a longtime staple for many melee builds.
  • Fulgur Anjanath's Will – popular for aggressive melee builds.
  • Arkveld's Hunger – a strong offensive set bonus for fast weapons.
  • Gogmazios set bonus – appears in many current endgame builds; check a current build list for how it pairs with your weapon.

Exact best-in-slot combos shift with each balance patch, so treat these as starting points and cross-check a current build list for your weapon.

Endgame Loop

  • Arch-Tempered hunts for top-tier armor pieces.
  • Tempered hunts for Artian parts and decorations.
  • Gogmazios for Gogma Artian materials and gear.
  • Challenge and Arena quests for fixed-gear practice and cosmetic rewards.
  • Event Quests and Festival of Accord seasonal events (Blossomdance, Flamefete, Dreamspell, Lumenhymn) for cosmetics, layered armor, and tickets. These rotate, so check the Event Quest board weekly.

Farming tips

  • Target a single decoration or material at a time. Investigations and Tempered hunts are the most efficient sources.
  • Break parts and capture when a material comes from a specific source; check the monster's reward table in the Hunter's Notes.
  • Duplicate low-value decorations can be melted or used in upgrades; clear them out regularly.

Multiplayer and the Grand Hub

  • The Grand Hub (added in Title Update 1) is the shared social space for lobbies, arena quests, and the Training Area.
  • Support Hunters are NPC hunters who join via SOS. Title Update 4 added Griffin (Great Sword), Nightmist (Light Bowgun), and a seasonally available Nadia.
  • Cross-play is supported across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Link parties let you stay grouped across multiple hunts; useful for farming with friends.

Boss Tips for Key Monsters

  • Rey Dau – fast lightning attacks and a charged railgun blast. Watch the horn glow; sidestep, do not roll forward into the beam.
  • Uth Duna – the flood veil makes it hard to hurt early; break the veil by damaging it, and fight near the edges of the water.
  • Nu Udra – tentacles everywhere; hit the head and tentacle tips to break them and reduce its reach. Carry Fireproof or Nulberries.
  • Jin Dahaad – huge area ice attacks; shelter behind environmental cover when it charges its big attack.
  • Arkveld and Guardian Arkveld – chain whips with wide swings; Focus Strike the chains and stay under the body.
  • Gore Magala – infects you with Frenzy; hit the monster to overcome the virus for a bonus. Antivirus helps if you play defensively.
  • Zoh Shia – the story's final monster; its later phase opens new weak points. Carry Mega Potions and Lifepowder.
  • Gogmazios – a long endgame fight; check its Hunter's Notes entry for current elemental weaknesses and break its tar-coated parts to open up damage. Bring a full healing kit and play it with a group or Support Hunters until you know the patterns.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring armor upgrades. Defense matters far more than new hunters expect in High Rank.
  • Bringing the wrong element. Check the Hunter's Notes before every new hunt and use your second weapon slot for an alternate element.
  • Not eating. Meals are free survival and damage. Always eat.
  • Rolling into attacks. Many monster attacks have delayed hits. Wait a beat, then roll through, or block if you can.
  • Hoarding Artian parts forever. Spend them to build and reinforce weapons as your build comes together.
  • Skipping side missions. They unlock key quality-of-life features and upgrades.
  • Chasing rarity over skills. A cohesive skill setup beats a random higher-rarity set.

Advanced Tips

  • Pop wounds in sync with enrage. Agitator plus Weakness Exploit spikes when the monster is enraged and wounded, so save Focus Strikes for that window if you can.
  • Mount into wall bangs and turf wars. Steering a mounted monster into walls or into another monster triggers big damage and wounds.
  • Use loadouts. Save separate equipment loadouts per element or per monster type, and link Layered Armor to them if your version supports it.
  • Master offset timing. Offset attacks can cancel dangerous monster moves and deal large damage, especially with Great Sword, Hammer, and Long Sword.
  • Use your Palico's gadget and tools. Some Palico tools heal, trap, or distract. Match them to your weapon and the fight.
  • Carry a full item kit. Mega Potions, Max Potions, Lifepowder, Flash Pods, Traps, Tranq Bombs, and a ranged secondary weapon for flyers.
