A player-to-player guide to Hades II: the two routes and their bosses, all six Nocturnal Arms and their Aspects, the Crossroads upgrade systems, how to build strong runs, and how to push into Fear and the post-game.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Post-Launch Patch 2, Hotfix 5 (July 2026); v1.0 launched 25 September 2025. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Death is progress. Every run brings back resources that unlock permanent upgrades at the Crossroads. Early losses are expected and planned for.
  • Unlock Arcana cards first. The Altar of Ashes (Arcana) gives permanent passive bonuses. Ashes spent here are the biggest early power spike.
  • Keep your Grasp in mind. Arcana cards cost Grasp; raising your Grasp (with Psyche) lets you equip more cards at once.
  • Stir the Cauldron. Incantations at the Crossroads Cauldron unlock new systems, shops, tools, and story progress. Do them as soon as you can afford them.
  • Get the Tools of the Unseen. The Crescent Pick, Silver Spade, Tablet of Peace and Rod of Fishing let you gather ore, seeds, Psyche and fish during runs. Resources are how you grow stronger.
  • Pick one weapon and learn it. The Witch's Staff is a fine start; the Sister Blades are the next easiest to unlock. Try each one, then settle on a favourite to grind upgrades.
  • Use Omega moves. Holding Attack, Special or Cast charges an Omega version that spends Magick. Much of Hades II's damage comes from them.
  • Read boon combinations. Duo Boons (from two gods) and Infusions (tied to Elements) are what turn a good run into a great one.
  • God Mode exists and is fine. It gives a damage-resistance bonus that grows each time you die. Turn it on if you care more about the story than the challenge.
  • Talk to everyone at the Crossroads. Relationships, gifts (Nectar, then Bath Salts etc.) and the Fated List drive the story and unlock rewards.

The Two Routes

Melinoë can head down into the Underworld or up to the Surface. Each route has four regions and a Guardian at the end of each.

Underworld route

Region | Guardian

Erebus | Hecate

Oceanus | Scylla and the Sirens

Fields of Mourning | Infernal Cerberus

Tartarus | Chronos

Surface route

Region | Guardian

City of Ephyra | Polyphemus

Rift of Thessaly | Eris

Mount Olympus | Prometheus

The Summit | Typhon

Guardians gain harder "Unrivaled" versions (e.g. Unrivaled Scylla, Unrivaled Cerberus, Unrivaled Chronos, Unrivaled Prometheus, Unrivaled Typhon) when you add Fear through the Oath of the Unseen.

Surface route notes: early on, the Surface is hostile to Melinoë and you'll need story progress and Incantations before surface runs feel manageable. Ephyra is a hub you explore freely rather than a linear chain of rooms, so clear its areas efficiently.

The Nocturnal Arms

Six weapons, each with four Aspects. Aspects change how the weapon plays and are unlocked and ranked up at the Silver Pool / weapon stand with resources.

Weapon | Style | Aspects

Witch's Staff (Descura) | Balanced melee combos plus a long-range Special | Melinoë, Circe, Momus, Anubis

Sister Blades (Lim and Oros) | Fast backstab-rewarding melee, thrown knives | Melinoë, Artemis, Pan, Morrigan

Umbral Flames (Ygnium) | Ranged attacks while moving, orbiting Specials | Melinoë, Moros, Eos, Supay

Moonstone Axe (Zorephet) | Slow, heavy hits and a blocking Special | Melinoë, Charon, Thanatos, Nergal

Argent Skull (Revaal) | Ammo-based ranged shots, dash-strike to retrieve | Melinoë, Medea, Persephone, Hel

Black Coat (Xinth) | Guarded melee with seeking Specials | Melinoë, Selene, Nyx, Shiva

Post-Launch Patch 2 (14 April 2026) tweaked several Aspects: Aspect of Artemis' Riposte recharges faster, Aspect of Pan now works with Dancing Knives (Daedalus), and Aspect of Hel's Omega Attack channels faster.

Beginner picks: Witch's Staff (safe, all-round), Moonstone Axe (tanky, forgiving), Sister Blades (high damage once you learn backstabs).

Combat Basics

  • Attack, Special, Cast, Sprint. Your Cast creates a circle that binds foes in place; it's one of your best defensive tools.
  • Magick fuels Omega moves. How quickly you get it back depends heavily on your boons, Arcana and pickups, so many builds revolve around Magick economy.
  • Sprint replaces Hades 1's dash spam. You can dodge through attacks at the start of a Sprint, then keep running.
  • Death Defiance revives you once per charge; you can gain more from Arcana and certain rewards.
  • Armor and weak points: Armored foes take extra hits; many bosses telegraph with glowing effects. Watch, then punish.

Boons, Gods and Elements

More than a dozen Olympians offer Boons, including Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hestia and Ares, plus Hermes and others with special rewards. Selene grants Hexes through a separate path (Path of Stars).

  • Core slots: Attack, Special, Cast, Sprint and Magick gain one god's effect each. Pick gods whose effects stack with your weapon.
  • Elements: Boons carry Elements (Earth, Water, Air, Fire, Aether). Infusion boons unlock when you hold enough of one Element, rewarding focused builds.
  • Duo Boons appear when you hold qualifying Boons from two gods (e.g. Glorious Disaster from Zeus and Apollo, King's Ransom / Queen's Ransom from Zeus and Hera).
  • Hammer of Daedalus upgrades change your weapon's moveset. Prioritise these on weapons where they fix a weakness.
  • Rarity: Common, Rare, Epic, Heroic, Legendary. Pom of Power levels boons up; Rarify effects bump rarity.

Build archetypes that work

Archetype | Idea | Good fits

Omega spam | Stack Magick regen and Omega damage | Staff, Flames, Skull

Status stacking | Apply curses (e.g. Hitch, Freeze, Blitz) and pop them | Blades, Coat

Cast-centric | Strong Cast boon + binding control | Any weapon, great for defence

Tank and retaliate | Armor, blocking, damage reduction | Axe, Black Coat

Crossroads Progression Systems

Arcana (Altar of Ashes)

Permanent passive cards bought with Ashes and equipped within your Grasp limit. Standouts early: cards that add Magick, Death Defiance, and extra max Life. Later cards reward specific playstyles.

Incantations (Cauldron)

Spend gathered reagents to unlock new systems: gardens, fishing, shops, cosmetic items, and story beats. The Cauldron is the backbone of long-term progression. If a resource seems useless, check which Incantation needs it.

Tools of the Unseen

Tool | Gathers

Crescent Pick | Ores (Silver, Bronze and more)

Silver Spade | Seeds and plant materials

Tablet of Peace | Psyche from shades

Rod of Fishing | Fish (used for Incantations and gifts)

Swap tools based on what your next upgrade needs. The Mystery Seed now has an inventory hint about where it can be found (Hotfix 3, June 2026).

Familiars and Keepsakes

  • Animal Familiars accompany you and provide passive bonuses and gathering help. Post-Launch Patch 2 added an alternate form for each.
  • Keepsakes are gifts from characters that give run bonuses; you can swap them at the start of each region. Rank them up by using them.

The Oath of the Unseen (Fear)

Once you've cleared a route, the Oath lets you add Vows that make runs harder in exchange for more rewards and Unrivaled Guardians. Start with Vows that add enemy health or speed modestly before the more punishing rules.

  • Clear Erebus consistently. Put Ashes into Arcana that give extra Death Defiance and Magick.
  • Unlock the Crescent Pick and start collecting Silver.
  • Unlock a second weapon (Sister Blades is a common next pick).
  • Push Oceanus and the Fields of Mourning; unlock the Silver Spade and Tablet of Peace.
  • Work Cauldron Incantations toward the Surface route.
  • Beat Chronos at least once, then begin Surface runs.
  • Once both routes are cleared, start adding Fear through the Oath.

Boss Tips

  • Hecate: Watch for her illusion copies and summoned hazards; hit the real Hecate and keep moving.
  • Scylla and the Sirens: Take out the backup singers first to reduce the chaos; the "song" buffs matter.
  • Infernal Cerberus: Big telegraphed sweeps; dodge through with Sprint and punish recovery windows.
  • Chronos: Manages time and summons hazards. Save your Cast for his add phases.
  • Polyphemus: A slow, heavy hitter with a grab and big area slams; don't stand still in front of him, and punish after his long recoveries.
  • Eris: Aggressive ranged pressure; close the distance.
  • Prometheus: Punishes greedy attacks; learn his charge-up attacks and avoid trading hits.
  • Typhon: Multi-part fight at the Summit; break the body parts in sequence and manage adds.

Post-Game and Dream Dives

Late in the story, Hades II opens up further endgame content, including Dream Dives (spoiler-tagged in patch notes). Supergiant has tuned them repeatedly in 2026: more Boons in shops and more Gold when Tartarus or the Summit comes first or second, slightly reduced Life for Chronos and Unrivaled Chronos, and Hermes delivering undelivered Shrine of Hermes items before the final Encounter. Expect a mixed-region challenge built for fully-upgraded players.

Post-Launch Patch 2 also added story content: Fated Prophecy conclusion scenes (e.g. Odysseus, Arachne), Forever Gifting (keep gifting Bath Salts, Twin Lures or Ambrosia after bonding), Going Steady for non-Platonic relationships, new dialogue and decorations.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Hoarding Ashes. Spend them on Arcana immediately; they're your biggest early upgrade.
  • Ignoring the Cast. Binding enemies in place prevents a lot of damage.
  • Picking every god. Spreading across too many gods ruins Elements and Duo Boon chances. Focus two or three.
  • Neglecting Magick. If you can't Omega, your damage collapses mid-run.
  • Switching weapons every run. Learning one weapon deeply is faster than being mediocre with six.
  • Skipping gathering. Resources gate almost every upgrade. Bring the right Tool of the Unseen.
  • Rushing Fear. Unrivaled bosses are brutal. Add Vows slowly.

Advanced Tips

  • Aspect synergies define builds. Many advanced builds start from the Aspect, then chase gods that feed it.
  • Route through shops when it matters. Charon's wares and Wells can deliver the missing piece of a build.
  • Plan Hammer upgrades around your weakest move. A strong Omega Special hammer can carry a whole run.
  • Selene's Path of Stars scales your Hex; pick upgrades that match your build (some Selene effects, like Moon Beam, affect how often Path of Stars appears). Post-Launch Patch 2 changed two Path of Stars upgrades: Tribulation (Moon Water) now triggers your "after you take damage" effects multiple times, and Decline (Twilight Curse) was reworked.
  • Use God Mode for practice of specific bosses, then turn it off for real attempts.
  • Keep the game patched. Hotfixes in 2026 fixed many boon interactions (for example Weed Killer with Dividing Blaze, and Suffering on Sight with Thessaly foes).

FAQ

Is Hades II finished? Yes. v1.0 launched on 25 September 2025 after early access. Supergiant released Post-Launch Patch 1 (late 2025, adding True Ending events and a Cauldron Incantation to return to an earlier point in the story) and Post-Launch Patch 2 (April 2026) with hotfixes through July 2026.

Which weapon is best for beginners? The Witch's Staff is the most forgiving starting weapon. The Moonstone Axe is also good if you prefer a slower, tankier style.

How do I get more Death Defiances? Through Arcana cards at the Altar of Ashes and certain in-run rewards.

Do I need to play Hades 1 first? No, but the story has many callbacks that land better if you have.

What is God Mode? An optional mode that gives increasing damage resistance each time you die, so you can experience the story without the full challenge.

How do I unlock the Surface route? Progress through the Underworld story and complete Cauldron Incantations that let Melinoë safely travel up. Talk to Hecate and check the Cauldron for new options regularly.

What are Unrivaled bosses? Harder versions of Guardians unlocked through the Oath of the Unseen (Fear).
