Everything from beating Stereo Madness to your first demon: controls, game modes, the official levels, coins and unlocks, practice technique, online levels, and what update 2.208 changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of update 2.2081 (January 2026); update 2.209 has been teased with a trailer (September 2026) but was not yet out at time of writing. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Practice mode is how you learn levels. It places checkpoints so you can drill hard sections. Normal mode only counts full runs from 0%.
- Learn the rhythm, not just the obstacles. Most official levels are timed to the music, so listen and jump on the beat.
- Get the secret coins. Each official level has 3, and they unlock the three official demons plus many icons.
- Don't jump straight to Clubstep. Work through the main levels in order, since each game mode is introduced gradually.
- Online levels are most of the game. Millions of user levels, plus Daily, Weekly, Gauntlets, Map Packs and Lists.
- Turn on Click Between Steps (2.208). It registers inputs more precisely between physics steps, and it's now an official option.
- Keep frame rate high and stable. Check the graphics options (V-Sync, FPS) and match your monitor's refresh rate where possible. Low or unstable FPS makes timing inconsistent.
- Avoid unofficial hacks on rated levels if you care about leaderboards. Cheats can get you removed from the leaderboards.
Controls
Action | Default input
Jump / fly / flip (classic levels) | Space, Up arrow, W, or left mouse
Move left/right (platformer) | A/D or Left/Right arrows
Pause | Esc
Place checkpoint (practice) | Z
Remove last checkpoint (practice) | X
Player 2 (dual, 2-player levels) | Separate keys, see Settings
Keys can be changed in the keybinds menu. Many experienced players move jump off Space to a key they can press faster.
Game Modes
Mode | How it controls | Tip
Cube | Jump on press; hold to keep jumping | Learn when a held press auto-jumps
Ship | Hold to rise, release to fall | Tap gently. Most ship crashes come from over-holding
Ball | Press to flip gravity | Plan which surface you'll land on
UFO | Each press is a small flap | Tap rhythm; don't spam
Wave | Hold to go up diagonally, release to go down | Straight-fly corridors test consistency; mini wave is steeper
Robot | Hold for a longer jump | The jump height depends on hold length
Spider | Press to teleport instantly to the opposite surface | Reaction timing, not physics
Swing (2.2) | Press flips gravity while gliding | Like a floaty ball-ship hybrid
Portals switch mode, gravity, size (mini), speed (half, normal, 2x, 3x, 4x), dual mode and mirror. Orbs (yellow, pink, red, blue, green, black, dash) need a press while touching. Pads trigger on contact.

12 | Theory of Everything | Insane
13 | Electroman Adventures | Insane
14 | Clubstep | Demon
15 | Electrodynamix | Insane
16 | Hexagon Force | Insane

Unlocking the demons: Clubstep, Theory of Everything 2 and Deadlocked are locked behind secret coin totals (10, 20 and 30 coins). Collect coins as you go.
Suggested order after the basics: Get comfortable up to Theory of Everything, then do Electrodynamix, Hexagon Force (dual sections) and Blast Processing. Deadlocked is widely considered the hardest of the three official demons; opinions differ on whether Clubstep or Theory of Everything 2 is easier, so try both.
The Tower (2.2): Four platformer levels (The Tower, The Sewers, The Cellar and The Secret Hollow) where you move freely instead of auto-scrolling. They have keys and hidden paths, so explore.
Difficulty Ladder for Online Levels
User levels are rated Auto, Easy, Normal, Hard, Harder, Insane, then Demon, split into Easy, Medium, Hard, Insane and Extreme Demon. Platformer levels are rated too, and star ratings give Stars (classic) or Moons (platformer).
A sensible path to your first demon:
- Beat all non-demon official levels, then Clubstep.
- Play Insane rated user levels until they feel routine.
- Pick a well-known Easy Demon. Community lists (such as the Geometry Dash Demon Ladder, GDDL) rank demons more precisely than the in-game faces.
- Practice-mode it to 100%, then do runs from 0% while practicing your worst section from a checkpoint.
Coins, Orbs, Diamonds and Unlocks
Currency/Collectible | Where it comes from | Used for
Secret coins | 3 per official level | Unlocks official demons, icons, vaults
User coins | Verified coins in rated user levels | Icons, achievements, and 2.208 leaderboards
Stars / Moons | Beating rated levels | Icons, progression, leaderboards
Mana orbs | Collected while playing (even in failed runs) | Shop purchases
Diamonds | Daily levels, rewards, chests | Diamond-related shops and unlocks
Keys | Earned from orbs and progress | Treasure Room chests
Where to spend and find stuff:
- Shops sell icons, colors, trails and death effects for orbs. More shops unlock as you progress. Look around the main menu and the treasure room area.
- The Vault, Vault of Secrets and Chamber of Time unlock through progress and take codes. Codes and hints come from the characters guarding them. Look up a current code list only if you're stuck.
- Daily chests open on a timer from the main menu. Claim them every time you play.
- Achievements unlock a large share of icons, so check the achievement list for what's left.
Online Levels and Features
- Daily Level and Weekly Demon: featured levels on a timer with diamond and orb rewards.
- Event levels: time-limited featured levels. RobTop highlights them on the Geometry Dash Spotlight channel (launched 2026).
- Gauntlets: themed sets of 5 rated levels. 2.208 added new Gauntlets, and the community ran a Duality Gauntlet contest in 2026.
- Map Packs and Lists (2.2) group levels by difficulty or theme.
- Leaderboards: 2.208 added leaderboards for Moons, Demons and User Coins, on top of stars. The site GeometryDash.com (launched 2026) shows the Top 1000 and lets you play Stereo Madness in a browser.
What Update 2.208 Changed (January 19, 2026)
- Click Between Steps / Click On Steps: precise input timing options that previously needed a mod.
- New leaderboards: Moons, Demons and User Coins.
- New Gauntlets.
- Editor trace system plus other editor improvements.
- Improved networking and bug fixes. 2.2081 followed two days later with CBS tweaks and performance fixes.
- If something breaks after an update, fully uninstall third-party mods/extensions first. RobTop asks players to do this before reporting bugs.
Building Levels (Editor Basics)
- Start from a song you like, then place guidelines on the beat so jumps line up with the music.
- Use Build Helper and groups early. Triggers (Move, Alpha, Toggle, Color and the 2.2 camera/area triggers) target group IDs.
- Verify your level by beating it yourself before uploading. Only verified levels can be rated.
- Rating is chosen by RobTop from level requests (moderators send levels in). Polish, decoration and a readable gameplay path count far more than raw difficulty.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Grinding normal mode on a level you haven't learned. Practice first, then do runs.
- Only practicing from the start. Put checkpoints right before your worst section and drill it until it's automatic.
- Holding too long in ship/wave. Small, controlled inputs work better.
- Playing at low or unstable FPS. It makes timing inconsistent and some levels unbeatable.
- Skipping coins. Missing ones lock you out of demons and icons later.
- Using hack clients on rated levels. They risk your leaderboard standing and cause crashes after updates.
Advanced Tips
- Segment practice: Put practice checkpoints at the start of each hard section, drill each segment until it's consistent, then chain segments into longer runs.
- Warm up on a level you've already beaten before grinding a hard one.
- Short sessions beat marathons. Consistency drops sharply when you're tired or tilted.
- Learn memory sections. Fake paths and hidden spikes in user levels are memorized, not reacted to.
- Wave consistency: Practice straight-fly and spam sections in dedicated challenge levels.
- Watch a verification video of a demon to see the intended routes and timings before practicing.
- Mods: The Geode loader is the standard way to add community mods. Expect mods to break after updates like 2.209 and wait for them to be updated.
