A relaxed-but-efficient guide to Farm Together: how the currencies and levels work, what to plant early, how to expand, how to use tractors, farmhands, and visits, and how events and DLC fit in. It also covers whether to play the original or Farm Together 2.

Researched September 2026 — the original Farm Together's last content pack was the Fantasy Pack (April 2022); development now continues on Farm Together 2 (full release May 30, 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Time passes while you're offline. Plant long-growing items before you log off and short ones while you're playing.
  • Plow, plant, harvest, repeat. Crops are the backbone of early income and XP.
  • There are two kinds of level: your Player Level and your Farm Level. Both unlock new items and buildings.
  • Items level up too. Each crop, tree, flower, and animal gains levels as you harvest it, which increases its value.
  • Three currencies: coins, diamonds, and medals. Different items pay out in different currencies, and each currency buys different things. Check the tooltip before you plant.
  • Complete quests. Quests give bonus rewards and XP and are the fastest way to move forward early.
  • Expand your farm as soon as you can afford it. More land means more of everything.
  • Use the tractor for big fields, and keep an eye on the fuel gauge. Build a Fuel Pump or Gas Station.
  • Visit other farms. Helping others fills your boost meter, which speeds things up on your own farm.
  • Nothing is urgent. Crops wait for you. Play at your own pace.

Currencies and Progression

Currency / stat | How you get it | What it's for

Coins | Harvesting many items (crops especially) and selling goods | Most seeds, buildings, expansions

Diamonds | Certain item types pay out diamonds | Specific items and purchases priced in diamonds

Medals | Certain item types pay out medals | Specific items and purchases priced in medals

Gold Nuggets | Found while working your farm | A collectible; finding 100 is an achievement

Player XP | Nearly every action | Player Level; unlocks items and customization

Farm XP | Farm activity | Farm Level; unlocks farm items and buildings

Boost | Helping on other people's farms | Speeds up progress on your own farm

Item levels

Each crop, tree, flower, and animal type levels up as you harvest it. Higher-level items are worth more. That means specializing in a few high-value items pays off, but you also want a spread for quests and achievements (one asks you to raise 20 items to level 30).

What to Grow

Crops

  • The first and most flexible income source.
  • Short crops are great while you're online; long crops are for overnight or work breaks.
  • Match crop growth time to how long you'll be away. A crop that finishes in 30 minutes but sits for 8 hours earns far less per hour than an 8-hour crop.

Trees

  • Planted once, harvested repeatedly.
  • Trees have seasonality, meaning some only produce in certain seasons. The community keeps a seasonal tree list on the Steam guides page.
  • Leveling a tree to 10 unlocks an achievement.

Flowers

  • Their own item type with their own payouts. Some flowers take three days or more to grow (there's an achievement for harvesting one).

Animals

  • Placed in fenced fields. You can mix animal types in the same plot (three types in one plot is an achievement).
  • Animals include chickens, cows, sheep, goats, horses, ducks, turkeys, peacocks, deer, and more.
  • Build a Feeder to handle feeding.

Fish ponds

  • Build ponds and fish from them. Fishing from 15 pond tiles at once is an achievement.
  • Pond payouts were rebalanced in updates to line up with other income.

Buildings and Automation

Building | What it does

Shop | Sells goods; building your first is an early goal

Fuel Pump / Gas Station | Refuel your tractor

Sprinkler | Helps with crop care over an area

Feeder | Feeds animals

Farmhand | A helper building that works your farm

Farmhands Union | Lets you pay farmhand wages in one place

Warehouse | Increases storage capacity without using farm tiles

Cultivation Table | Boosts crop earnings by 2% per level (since Update #42, May 2019); can be leveled with rising costs

Arborist's Corner | Works like the Cultivation Table, but for tree earnings

Marketing Agency | Offers quests with higher rewards

Pawn Shop | Trades items (there's an achievement for using it)

Cheese Factory, Feed Mixer | Processing and specialty buildings

Train Station | Hop on a train and ride along railroads you lay across your farm

Points of Interest | Special buildings; the cap was raised in updates

Improvement buildings (like the Cultivation Table and Arborist's Corner) can be upgraded again and again. Getting one to level 10 or higher is an achievement, and these upgrades are one of the best long-term investments in the game.

Storage caps how much you can hold. Warehouses raise it without eating farm space; reaching 20,000 total storage is an achievement.

Farm Expansion

  • Your farm grows in chunks. An update doubled the maximum farm size from a 5x5 to a 7x7 grid of chunks.
  • Unlocking every expansion is an achievement ("It's a small world!").
  • Expand toward where you want your big fields. Plan roads and decoration later; production comes first.

Tractors

  • Tractors plow, plant, and harvest big areas fast.
  • They run on fuel. An update doubled base fuel capacity and let you refuel without getting off.
  • You can batch-move items with the tractor (a queue of up to 100 items).
  • Tractors are customizable. DLC packs add themed tractors (the Polar Pack added a new tractor).

Multiplayer and Visiting

  • Keep your farm private, friends-only, or public.
  • A permission system limits what visitors can do, so strangers can help without being able to wreck your layout.
  • Visiting others and helping fills your boost meter. Filling it is an achievement.
  • Sign guestbooks and use the compass to find your way around big farms.
  • Split-screen for up to four players locally was added in an update.

Events and DLC

Seasonal events

Recurring events add limited-time tasks and exclusive items. Past events include the Frozen Festival, Haunted Harvest, Easter Harvest, Blossom Festival, Summer Festival, and many more. Finishing all tasks of a seasonal event is an achievement. Event items are highlighted on the map.

Each event revolves around a special item you grow or gather in bulk to unlock that event's rewards (from the official event announcements):

Event | What you farm

Frozen Festival | Edelweiss flowers

Haunted Harvest | Cursed Pumpkins

Blossom Festival | Flower Bouquets

Summer Festival | Pennant Flags

Easter Harvest | Event quests and items (recurring)

Solstice Harvest | Introduced alongside the 7x7 farm expansion (Update #45, June 2019)

Event tip: events are the one time the game rewards urgency. Clear a block of land for the event item as soon as it starts, plant it before you log off, and check which event rewards are exclusive so you prioritize those over items you can buy later.

A Sensible First Week

The achievement list doubles as a good progression checklist, because its early entries follow the natural unlock order:

  • Day 1: finish the Tutorial, plant your first crop, complete your first quest, customize your farmer, and build your first Shop.
  • Early levels: plant your first tree and buy your first animal. Trees and animals are slower but keep paying while you're away.
  • First expansion: unlock it as soon as you can afford it and fill it with whatever pays best per hour for your schedule.
  • Fuel Pump or Gas Station: build one before you start leaning on the tractor.
  • Once income is steady: add a fish pond, a Feeder, and a Sprinkler as they unlock, and start leveling a Cultivation Table.
  • Mid game and beyond: build a Point of Interest, a Warehouse for storage, and the Farmhands Union once you're running several farmhands.

Loading your farm again a month after creating it is itself an achievement ("Never too late to do well"), which tells you the intended pace: short, regular check-ins.

DLC content packs

The original game has many cosmetic content packs with themed decorations, clothes, animals, and tractors. Examples include the Mistletoe, Laurel, Chickpea, Sugarcane, Oxygen, Paella, Oregano, Jalapeño, Candy, Wedding, Polar (March 2022), and Fantasy (April 2022) packs. The Fantasy Pack was announced as the final pack for the original game. The Farm Together Complete Bundle deducts packs you already own.

Your House and Pet

  • You can build a house and decorate the interior, cook recipes, paint, or compose music inside.
  • Placing 25 decorations inside houses is an achievement.
  • Choose a cat or dog, customize it, and whistle at it (yes, that's an achievement).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Planting short crops right before bed. Use long-growth items when you'll be away.
  • Spreading too thin. Leveling a handful of high-value items beats planting one of everything.
  • Ignoring improvement buildings. Cultivation Table and Arborist's Corner upgrades multiply your earnings.
  • Running out of tractor fuel in the middle of a huge field. Build fuel stations near your fields.
  • Forgetting storage. Harvests stall when storage is full.
  • Opening your farm to the public with full permissions. Use the permission settings.

Advanced Tips

  • Plan your session length first, then plant what finishes right as you come back.
  • Batch actions with the tractor queue. Moving and recycling in bulk saves a lot of time.
  • Harvest while in planting mode to replant fields in one pass.
  • Stack quests. Keep a few quests ready and plant what they ask for alongside your income crops.
  • Visit busy public farms to fill your boost meter quickly, then spend the boost on your own farm.
  • Achievement hunters: long-term goals include 10,000,000 coins earned, 50,000 diamonds, 500 medals, 100,000 tractor tiles, 50,000 plowed tiles, and a marathon-length walking total.

Farm Together or Farm Together 2?

Farm Together 2 entered Early Access in May 2024 and fully released on May 30, 2025, with a year of Early Access updates behind it and more free updates and seasonal events planned. The original is still playable and has a large DLC library, but new content is going into the sequel. If you're starting fresh and want ongoing events, look at Farm Together 2; if you love the original's catalog and your existing farm, it's still a complete game.

FAQ

Does my farm grow while I'm offline? Yes. Time advances even when you're not online.

How do I play with friends? Set your farm to friends-only or public and invite them, or play split-screen locally with up to four players.

What's the difference between Player Level and Farm Level? Player Level is tied to you; Farm Level is tied to your farm. Both unlock new items.

Are the DLC packs worth it? They're cosmetic and themed: decorations, clothing, animals, and tractors. Buy them for looks, not power.

Is Farm Together still getting updates? The Fantasy Pack (April 2022) was the final content pack. Milkstone's focus moved to Farm Together 2.

How do I get more tractor fuel? Build a Fuel Pump or Gas Station. You can refuel without dismounting.
