A guide to building a competitive Dream Team, spending GP and coins wisely, training players, choosing a Team Playstyle and formation for the current meta, and climbing Division, updated for the v6.0.0 season.

Researched September 2026 — current as of v6.0.0 (season launched 13 August 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Log in daily and do the Daily Game. Login bonuses and the daily mini-games (refreshed in v6.0.0, developed with PlatinumGames) are the easiest free rewards.
  • Play the Events against AI first. Tour and campaign events give GP, player items, experience and Special Player Contracts at low risk.
  • GP is for scouting and standard players; save eFootball Coins. Coins buy premium packs. Free players should spend coins only on packs that clearly upgrade their starting eleven.
  • Pick one manager and one Team Playstyle. Managers have proficiency in each Team Playstyle, which boosts your squad. Build the team around that manager.
  • Use Level Training and Progression Points. Every player can level up; spend their progression points on the stats that suit their role.
  • Learn the defensive controls. Match-up (jockey the attacker), pressure, and team pressure win more matches than skill moves.
  • Try the new features: Fluid Formation (separate attacking and defensive setups), split Attacking and Defensive Playing Styles, the Overload Team Playstyle, and Dynamic Volley.
  • Use backup and manager slots. v6.0.0 raised Backup Player Slots to 900 and manager slots to 100, so you no longer need to sell as aggressively.

Modes

Mode | What it is | Rewards

Events (Tour, campaigns) | Matches vs AI with themed rules | GP, items, player contracts

Division | Ranked online vs players | Division rewards per season

Quick Match | Casual online | Low stakes practice

Friend Match | Play friends | Practice, no rewards

Custom Tournament (new in v6.0.0) | Create or join knock-out tournaments for up to 8 players with Dream Teams, custom rules (league, club or country restrictions) and spectating | Fun, community events

Daily Game | Short mini-games, plus Daily Super Play timing challenges | Daily rewards

Currencies and Spending

Currency | How you get it | Best use

GP | Matches, events, campaigns | Standard players, scouting, manager contracts

eFootball Coins | Purchase, events, some rewards | Premium packs (Epic, Big Time, Show Time, Ambassador packs)

Player development items | Campaigns, events | Level trainers and skill/position training

Special Player Contracts | Campaigns (e.g. the v6.0.0 New Season Campaign) | Pick a guaranteed star

F2P tips:

  • Never spend coins on random packs you do not need. Target a pack only if its headliner fixes a weak position in your starting eleven.
  • Save GP for managers that suit your preferred Team Playstyle.
  • Complete every campaign; the v6.0.0 New Season Campaign (13 August to 3 September 2026) included a Special Player Contract featuring Barcelona and Manchester United stars.

Player Cards and Training

Card types

  • Standard players: base cards, many can be scouted with GP.
  • Featured / Highlight players: boosted versions based on real performances.
  • Epic and Big Time: iconic and legendary cards, typically among the best in the game.
  • Show Time: cards with a signature special skill.
  • Ambassador editions: v6.0.0 added new Ambassador content with Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

Training

  • Levels: players level up by playing matches and using EXP Trainers; each level grants Progression Points.
  • Progression categories: Shooting, Passing, Dribbling, Dexterity, Lower Body Strength, Aerial Strength, Defending and three Goalkeeping categories.
  • Rules of thumb:
  • Strikers: Shooting, Dribbling, Lower Body Strength (speed and acceleration).
  • Wingers: Dribbling, Lower Body Strength, Passing.
  • Midfielders: Passing, Dexterity, Lower Body Strength.
  • Center-backs: Defending, Aerial Strength, Lower Body Strength.
  • Full-backs: Lower Body Strength, Defending.
  • Skill and Position Training: add skills (e.g. finishing or passing skills) or new positions. In v6.0.0, the position already printed on the card cannot be chosen again in Position Training.

Tactics: Team Playstyles, Formations and Managers

The six Team Playstyles (v6.0.0)

Team Playstyle | How it plays | Best for

Possession Game | Patient build-up, short support runs | Technical midfields

Quick Counter | Fast attacks after winning the ball, exploiting space behind | Pacey forwards and wingers

Long Ball Counter | Deep, compact lines; strikers finish chances | Strong, fast strikers and solid defenders

Long Ball | Direct passes to a focal striker | Tall target men

Out Wide | Stretches the pitch, isolates full-backs | Strong wingers and overlapping full-backs

Overload (new) | Concentrates players on the ball's side for numerical superiority | Technical players comfortable in tight spaces

Current meta (September 2026)

Meta picks come from community tactic roundups (see Sources) and shift with every patch and new manager release, so treat them as a snapshot.

  • Long Ball Counter is dominant in top competitive play, with Quick Counter the main alternative for managers who handle attack-to-defence transitions well.
  • Popular formations include 4-2-2-2, 4-2-1-3 and 4-2-3-1. With Fluid Formation, top players increasingly use different shapes for attack and defence (for example, a back three when attacking dropping to a flat back four without the ball).
  • Commonly used managers: Fabio Capello and D. Deschamps (Long Ball Counter), Frank Rijkaard (Quick Counter), and Mourinho with 4-2-3-1 Long Ball Counter variants. Antonio Conte arrived with the v6.0.0 season carrying two Link-up Plays: Touchdown Pass C and One-Two Cut-In B.
  • Copying a meta setup is less effective than building one your players actually suit, because Fluid Formation rewards realistic transitions.

New v6.0.0 tactical tools

  • Fluid Formation: set distinct attacking and defensive shapes that switch during matches.
  • Attacking and Defensive Playing Styles: players now have separate playing styles for each phase.
  • Link-up Plays: managers can now have two.
  • Individual Instructions: "Attacking" and "Deep Line" were removed in v6.0.0; plan around the remaining ones (for example Anchoring, Counter Target, Man Marking, Defensive).

Gameplay Fundamentals

Attacking

  • Pass before you dribble. Quick one-twos and through balls break the AI and human defences better than long dribbles.
  • Shoot early from good angles. Low driven shots and finesse shots from the edge of the box are reliable; the new Dynamic Volley lets you strike the ball in mid-air with power, great for first-time finishes from crosses.
  • Use the wings for Out Wide or Overload. Overload wants short, overlapping combinations near the ball.
  • Protect the ball with strong players and change direction rather than sprinting constantly.

Defending

  • Match-up (jockey) instead of pressing everything. Hold the defender between the attacker and goal and wait for a bad touch.
  • Use pressure selectively. Pressing pulls defenders out of shape; press only when the attacker is facing away or isolated.
  • Switch players intelligently. Control the player closest to the passing lane, not always the one near the ball.
  • Keep your defensive line compact with the team's Defensive Playing Styles and your chosen shape.
  • Check Settings - Controller Settings for button mappings; they differ across console, PC and mobile.

Division Climbing Tips

  • Play a few Events with a new setup before taking it into Division.
  • Stop after two losses in a row. Tilt costs more points than bad luck.
  • Watch your opponent's shape in the first 10 minutes and adjust with Fluid Formation or substitutions.
  • Stamina management: sub tired wingers and full-backs at the hour mark.
  • Don't over-rely on long shots. Patient build-up creates higher quality chances.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spending coins on every new pack. Budget for the packs that genuinely upgrade your team.
  • Ignoring manager proficiency. A manager with low proficiency in your Team Playstyle makes the whole team worse.
  • Training every stat evenly. Specialize by position.
  • Pressing constantly. Defending by pressing pulls your team apart.
  • Copying pro formations without the right players. The formation must match your squad's profiles.
  • Skipping the daily mini-games and login bonuses. Free resources add up.
  • Selling players to free slots. You now have 900 backup slots; keep useful cards for later events and position needs.

Advanced Tips

  • Build two squads: one for Long Ball Counter, one for Quick Counter or Overload, and swap according to opponent style.
  • Fluid Formation experimentation: define an attacking shape that pushes full-backs up and a defensive shape that drops a midfielder into the back line.
  • Link-up Plays: set them to your best combinations (e.g. a creative midfielder with a fast striker); Conte's two Link-up Plays show how managers can support specific combinations.
  • Custom Tournament with friends: use it to test new setups against human opponents without risking Division points.
  • Trainer efficiency: use EXP Trainers on players you will keep, not on temporary event squads.
  • Track official news: Konami adds campaigns, Epic packs and new managers regularly throughout the season.
