A complete guide to Sparking! ZERO covering the core combat system, defensive options, team building, the game modes (including Limit Breaker Journey), online play and the DLC roster.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Super Limit-Breaking NEO DLC and free update (July 30, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Do the Battle Tutorial and Super Tutorial first. Sparking! ZERO has a lot of hidden depth (Super Counters, Perception, Vanish chains), and the tutorials are the only place the game walks you through it. They also pay out Zeni.
  • Zeni unlocks everything. Characters, costumes, customization items and more are bought in the Shop with Zeni earned from almost every mode. Early on, clear the one-time Zen-Oh's Orders and Whis's Stamp Book challenges for a big Zeni boost, then use Episode Battles and Custom Battles.
  • Ki is your economy. Dashing, blasts and Supers all spend Ki. Holding charge refills it; charging past a full gauge enters Sparking Mode, which unlocks Ultimates.
  • Skill Count is the second resource. Skill Count regenerates over time and fuels character Skills, transformations, Sparking Mode and the Revenge Counter (2 Skill Count). Don't waste it on flashy moves when you need a defensive escape.
  • Guard and Perception beat panic. Holding guard stops most normal rushes; Perception (its own button) deflects attacks, and tapping it right before a rush hit lands triggers a Sonic Sway counter. Learn this before worrying about combos.
  • Transform mid-fight, not at the start. Transforming costs Skill Count; base forms often have more Skill stock and lower DP. Many players open in a lower form and transform once they have spare Skill Count.
  • Play Episode Battles for story and unlocks. Eight characters have episode routes (Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan, Future Trunks, Frieza, Goku Black and Jiren), each with branching "what-if" Sparking! episodes.
  • Try Limit Breaker Journey if you own Super Limit-Breaking NEO. It is a solo growth mode where you pick a character and strengthen them over repeated battles.
  • Turn on the input display in Training. Watching what you actually press is the fastest way to find dropped inputs.

Game Modes at a Glance

Mode | What it is | Why play it

Episode Battle | Story mode across eight character routes with branching outcomes | Story, unlocks, alternate "Sparking! episodes"

Battle (Player vs CPU / Local) | Free fights, teams of up to five | Practice, couch versus

Custom Battle | Build or play fan-made scenarios with dialogue and conditions | Creative scenarios, extra Zeni

World Tournament | Tournament brackets with special rules (including ring-outs) | Rewards, varied rules

Ranked / Player Match | Online versus | Competitive play

Training | Tutorials, Super Tutorial and free practice | Learning the system

Limit Breaker Journey (DLC) | Pick a character, battle increasingly strong foes, spend EXP to grow stats | Solo progression, experimenting with builds

Limit Breaker Journey arrived with the Super Limit-Breaking NEO DLC on July 30, 2026. It needs the DLC. The same day's free update added two new battle mechanics and three stage variants for everyone. The announcements don't say much about how the new mechanics work, so check the in-game Training tips and the official patch notes for details.

Core Combat Systems

Resources

Resource | Where you see it | Spent on | How to refill

Health | Top bar (multiple bars per character) | n/a | Items, some Skills

Ki | Gauge under health | Dashes, Ki blasts, Blast attacks, Vanishes | Charging, landing hits, passive gain

Skill Count | Counter next to the gauges | Skills, transformations, entering Sparking Mode, Revenge Counter (2), some defensive actions | Restores automatically over time

Sparking Mode | Ki gauge becomes the Sparking gauge | Unlocks Ultimate Blasts and powered-up actions while it lasts | Charge past a full Ki gauge

Offense

  • Rush (melee) combos. Chain the rush button, and branch with directional inputs or heavy attacks into launchers, knockdowns and smash attacks. Charged heavy attacks (Smash) break guard and send opponents flying.
  • Rush Chains / Vanishing Assault. After knocking an opponent away you can chase with a vanish follow-up, extending damage at the cost of Ki or Skill Count.
  • Ki Blasts. Chip damage and pressure, and useful to interrupt charging opponents.
  • Blast attacks (Supers). Character-specific moves (Kamehameha, Galick Gun, Special Beam Cannon, etc.) that cost Ki.
  • Ultimate Blasts. The big finishers, only available in Sparking Mode.
  • Throws. Break a turtling opponent's guard.

Defense (the part that wins games)

Technique | Input idea | Use it for

Guard | Hold guard | Blocks most rush attacks and Ki blasts

Perception / Super Perception | Hold the Perception button (Circle on PlayStation) as an attack comes in | Deflects rushes and Blasts; Game8 notes Super Perception can cost Skill Count (more against Blasts)

Sonic Sway | Tap Perception right before a rush hit, even while guarding | Dodges the hit and gives a follow-up attack

Super Counter | Timed input as a rush hit lands | Reverses a melee combo; the opener for most punishes

Vanish (teleport dodge) | Timed input on specific hits, costs Ki | Escapes combos and repositions behind the attacker

Revenge Counter | Tap R3 (PlayStation) during an opponent's attack; costs 2 Skill Count | Emergency combo breaker; does not work against hits from behind

Beam Clash | Mash when two beams meet | Winning the clash deals big damage

The defensive meta in Sparking! ZERO is all about reads and timing windows. A high-level exchange is mostly two players trading Super Counters and Vanishes until someone runs out of Ki or Skill Count. The player with more resources left usually wins that exchange. Keep an eye on the opponent's Skill Count before committing to a long combo, since a stocked Revenge Counter will cut it short.

Transformations and Fusions

  • Characters with alternate forms (e.g. Goku base to Super Saiyan to Super Saiyan 2 and so on) transform using Skill Count. Forms usually have different Skills, stats and Ultimates.
  • Some characters have fusions or Potara routes that need a specific partner on the team. Check the character's Skill list in Training.
  • Transforming mid-combo or mid-pressure isn't free. It is safest after a knockdown or when the opponent is far away.

Destruction and Stages

Stages are destructible and include environmental hazards. Ring-out rules only apply in certain World Tournament settings. Large-scale Ultimates can trigger special finishing cutscenes when they KO the last opponent.

Team Building and DP Battles

In team battles you can bring up to five characters. Ranked DP Battles and many custom rulesets use DP cost limits: each character has a DP value based on strength, and a ranked team must total 15 DP or less, so you have to pick between one god-tier fighter plus fillers or a balanced squad. Ranked also offers Single Battles (one fighter each). Ranked tiers run D5 to D1, then C, B, A, S and finally Z; everyone starts at D5.

Swapping characters mid-fight is done when the Swap icon is glowing (hold D-pad left plus a face button on pad), and a swap can also be used as a follow-up attack.

Rules of thumb:

  • Put a low-DP anchor you're comfortable with first. Your opening character sets the pace; a cheap fighter who can gain Skill Count safely is a good opener.
  • Keep a healer or support Skill user. Characters with healing or buffing Skills can stretch a DP budget.
  • Beware base-form bargains. Lower forms are cheaper in DP, but check what the rule set allows before counting on a mid-fight transformation.
  • Items matter in offline and custom rules. Capsule-style items give stat boosts, heals or Ki; check the rule set before relying on them online.

Dragon Balls and Wishes

Winning battles can award Dragon Balls. Collect all seven and summon the dragon from the menu to make a wish (rewards such as Zeni and unlocks). Game8 warns that if you already hold a full set and earn another Dragon Ball, you risk losing it, so make your wish as soon as you have all seven.

Picking a Main

With 200+ characters in the base game plus DLC, pick based on playstyle rather than tier lists. Tier lists change after every balance update.

Archetype | Examples | Why pick them

All-rounders | Goku, Vegeta (Z and Super versions) | Clear kits, lots of transformations, strong beams

Rush/brawlers | Broly, Jiren, Kid Buu | Heavy pressure and armor-like toughness

Zoners/beam spammers | Cell, Frieza variants | Punish with Blasts from range

Tricksters | Goku Black, Hit, characters with time-stop or teleport Skills | Mind games, unusual Skills

Giants | Great Ape characters | Huge health, slow, great against newer players

Since Super Limit-Breaking NEO, the roster also includes 33 new characters, among them Mercenary Tao, Grandpa Gohan, General Blue, Chi-Chi, Demon King Piccolo, Goku (World Tournament), Mighty Mask, Supreme Kai, Uub (Kid), Zangya, Bardock (Super Saiyan), Chilled, Super 17, Vegeta (GT), Trunks (GT), Nuova Shenron, Hell Fighter 17, Champa, Jaco and Cheelai. Vegeta (GT) and Trunks (GT) are the first time either version has been playable in the Sparking (Budokai Tenkaichi) series.

Episode Battle Tips

  • Branching paths are triggered by conditions, like winning within a time limit, beating the enemy with a specific move, or choosing a different dialogue option. When a battle has a hidden "if" condition, a hint tends to show up in the pre-fight dialogue.
  • Replay from the Episode menu. You can jump back to any cleared battle to chase alternate routes without replaying everything.
  • Adjust difficulty. If a fight is a wall, lower the difficulty. Branch triggers still work at lower difficulties in most cases.
  • Jiren and Goku Black routes cover Super-era arcs; Frieza's route has some of the most fun what-if branches.

Online and Ranked

  • Ranked matches use rule sets that lean on DP limits and disable items. Practice on the exact rule set in Player Match first.
  • Defensive fundamentals decide games: Perception, Super Counter timing and resource tracking matter more than character choice at low and mid ranks.
  • Lag makes timing tougher. Use wired connections; if Super Counters feel impossible online, lean on guard and Perception, which have more forgiving windows.
  • Don't spam beams from full screen against experienced players. Most beams can be sidestepped or Vanished and then punished.

Controls and Settings

Sparking! ZERO supports keyboard and mouse, but most players use a controller since the game was built around pad inputs. On PC:

  • Rebind controls in Options, then Controls; the game shows the current binding in move lists and tutorials.
  • Camera and lock-on settings matter: if the camera loses the opponent after a knockback, use the lock-on reset rather than flying manually.
  • Control type: the game offers more than one control layout, including one modeled on the old Budokai Tenkaichi scheme. Pick one and stick with it, because the Skill and Blast inputs shown in move lists follow your chosen layout.
  • Turn off motion blur if you have trouble tracking fast rushes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spending all your Skill Count on transformations. Keep at least enough for a Revenge Counter against a strong rushdown player.
  • Charging Ki in the open. Charging is slow and punishable; do it after a hard knockdown or at long range.
  • Mashing rush. Long unbroken rush strings are easy to Super Counter. Mix in throws, delays and smash attacks.
  • Ignoring Perception. Holding guard feels safe, but the opponent will just throw you or charge a smash.
  • Using Ultimates at full health. Ultimates can be dodged; save them for a guaranteed setup or a finisher.
  • Buying random costumes first. Unlock the characters you actually play before cosmetics.

Advanced Tips

  • Vanish wars are a resource duel. Each Vanish costs Ki; count them. Once the opponent is dry, keep pressuring.
  • Delay your combo enders. Opponents mash Super Counter at the end of a rush string. Pausing briefly or ending with a throw baits it.
  • Use Z-Burst Dash to punish charge-ups. Opponents who charge Ki at mid range are open to a fast dash-in.
  • Tag out when low. In team battles, switching characters preserves a low-health fighter for a later comeback.
  • Lab your main's Skills. Some Skills have invincibility frames or special properties (like teleports or buffs) that aren't obvious from their description.
  • Learn guard crush tools. Smash attacks, throws and some Blasts break guard. Know at least two for your main.
