A practical guide to Dragon Ball FighterZ on PC: controls, the universal system mechanics, team building, the new Goku (SS4, DAIMA), and how to climb online without drowning in combo videos.

Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 1.50 (April 21, 2026), which added Goku (SS4, DAIMA) and minor balance changes. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Pick three characters and one assist each. FighterZ is a 3v3 tag game. Every character has three assist types (A, B, C) chosen on the character select screen; this choice matters as much as the character.
  • Mash Light for an auto-combo, but learn one real combo per character. Auto-combos are real, usable damage. They will not win you ranked matches forever, but they carry you through your first dozen hours.
  • Super Dash (H+S) is powerful but predictable. It auto-homes and beats Ki blasts. Everyone knows it; the counter is a jab or a 2H anti-air.
  • 2H (down + Heavy) is your anti-air. It is invincible to air attacks on most characters. Use it when opponents Super Dash or jump in.
  • Vanish (M+H) costs 1 Ki bar. It teleports behind the opponent. Great for extending combos; terrible as a random panic button.
  • Guard Cancel exists. Pressing forward + an assist during blockstun swaps in that teammate with an attack, costing Ki. Use it to escape pressure.
  • Sparking Blast (L+M+H+S) once per match. It gives damage and cancel bonuses and heals recoverable (blue) health. It lasts longer the fewer characters you have left.
  • Block low by default. Most mixups are overheads and lows; holding down-back beats more than holding back.
  • Do the tutorial and Combo Challenges. They teach the exact inputs the game uses.

Controls and Universal Mechanics

The game uses six buttons: Light (L), Medium (M), Heavy (H), Special/Ki blast (S), Assist 1 (A1), Assist 2 (A2).

Mechanic | Input | Notes

Dragon Rush | L+M (air OK) | Unblockable throw; wins against blocking opponents

Vanish | M+H (air OK) | Costs 1 Ki bar; teleports behind the opponent

Super Dash | H+S (air OK) | Homing dash; passes through Ki blasts

Ki Charge | Hold L+S | Build meter; very punishable

Sparking Blast | L+M+H+S (air OK) | Once per match; heals recoverable health, boosts damage and cancels

Z Change | Hold A1/A2 or 6+A1/A2 | Switch point character

Guard Cancel | 6+A1/A2 in blockstun | Costs 1 Ki bar; swaps in a teammate with an attack

Z Assist | Tap A1/A2 | Calls the chosen assist (A, B, or C)

Ki Gauge

  • You build Ki by attacking, taking damage, and charging.
  • Level 1 supers cost 1 bar; level 3 supers (Meteor attacks) cost 3 bars.
  • Vanish and Guard Cancel each cost 1 bar.
  • Z Change into a super (Dramatic Hyper Cancel or "DHC") lets you chain supers across characters.

Health

  • Damage splits into permanent (dark) and recoverable (blue) health.
  • Blue health regenerates while that character is off-screen or when Sparking Blast is active. Swap out damaged characters to recover.

Dragon Balls and Shenron

  • Dragon Balls are shared by both players. You collect them two ways: long combos (one ball per 10 hits in a combo) and landing attacks with the Dynamic! property (such as the auto-combo finisher), which unlock balls in a fixed order.
  • To summon Shenron you need all seven balls and 7 Ki bars, then land a Dynamic! attack. Only one summon per match.
  • Wishes: fully heal the current character, revive a fallen teammate (at 40% health), gain an extra Sparking Blast, or give the active character permanent blue-health regeneration.
  • Summoning Shenron is situational; revive is usually the strongest wish when you are down a character.

Neutral Fundamentals

  • Ki blasts (S) control space. Most characters can fire them on the ground and in the air; Super Dash goes through them.
  • Super Dash beats Ki blasts and closes distance, but loses to 2H, jab, and good air normals.
  • Air dash and jump-ins are how you approach from mid-range; watch for 2H.
  • Assists are the backbone of neutral and pressure. Call a beam or projectile assist, then approach behind it.

Pressure and Mixups

  • High/low: most characters have a low (2L, 2M) and an overhead (air attacks, 6M in some cases).
  • Left/right crossups: Vanish, teleports, and assists that pin opponents let you switch sides.
  • Tick throws: Dragon Rush after a short string beats blocking. Dragon Rush loses to pressing buttons, so vary your timing.
  • Assist lockdown: calling an assist with lots of blockstun lets you mix up safely.

Defense

  • Reflect: While blocking, back + S reflects Ki blasts and pushes attackers away. Check the input in the in-game Tutorial if your controls are remapped.
  • Guard Cancel: Swap out under pressure for 1 Ki bar.
  • Super Dash out: Risky, but can escape slow pressure.
  • Jump out: Jumping out of pressure is a common escape; opponents will anti-air it.

Team Building

Think in terms of roles:

Slot | Role | What you want

Point | Starts the fight | Strong neutral, meter-building, solid assist from teammates

Mid | Flexible | A good assist and a good character on its own

Anchor | Last character | Benefits from Sparking Blast lasting longest; comeback potential

Assist Types (general guide)

Assist type | What it does | Why it's useful

Beam | Full-screen projectile | Neutral control, combo extensions

Strike/lockdown | Hits opponents at close range with blockstun | Mixups and pressure

Anti-air | Hits jumpers | Defensive neutral

Beginner-Friendly Characters

  • Goku (Super Saiyan) and Vegeta (Super Saiyan): shoto-style, straightforward.
  • Android 18: summons Android 17 for pressure; very beginner-friendly damage.
  • Gohan (Adult): simple game plan, strong damage.
  • Android 16: grappler with command grabs; big damage.
  • Hit: counter-heavy; rewards reading your opponent.
  • Gotenks and Kid Buu: aggressive rushdown.

Pick characters you like; the game is balanced enough at intermediate level that fundamentals matter more than tiers.

Goku (SS4, DAIMA): The Newest Fighter

Added on April 22, 2026 alongside patch 1.50. His toolkit introduces Wild Dash, a new command-dash "rekka" system.

Move | Input | Notes

Wild Dash (L) | 236L | Fast forward dash for combos

Wild Dash (M) | 236M | Aerial movement with directional control

Wild Dash (H) | 236H | Teleports behind the opponent for mixups

Follow-ups | 5L/M/H, 2L/M/H, 8L/M/H, 5S after Wild Dash | Double Combination, Raging Strike, Power Swing, and Quick Move

Super Back Jump | 214L/M/H | Flip movement for repositioning and mixups

Super Flare Fist | 236L+M | Tracking cinematic super; good for DHC

Super Dragon Fist | 236H+S | Level 1 super with a Level 2 follow-up option

Super Kamehameha | 214L+M or 214H+S | Meteor (level 3) super; leaves him with big frame advantage

Kamehameha | 5S during Super Back Jump | Ki-blast-immune beam that can cancel into Super Dash

Playstyle: aggressive rushdown that is assist-dependent for mixups and deals big damage through charged air Heavy loops. Without assists he struggles, so pair him with strong lockdown or beam assists.

His assists include a high-blockstun strike (A), a full-screen anti-air (B), and a vertically tracking beam (C).

A 20-Minute Training Routine

Spend a short block in Training mode before you queue online:

  • Five minutes on your BnB combos. One midscreen, one in the corner, for each character on your team. Do each on both sides of the screen.
  • Five minutes of anti-airs. Set the training dummy to Super Dash and jump in repeatedly, then practise reacting with 2H.
  • Five minutes of defence. Record a simple high/low mixup on the dummy, set it to playback randomly, and block it. Add Guard Cancel escapes once you can block consistently.
  • Five minutes of assist timing. Practise calling your assists into your approach and at the end of combos so you're safe afterward.

It's boring, but players who do this climb faster than those who only play ranked.

Game Modes

Mode | What it's for

Story Mode | Original storyline built around Android 21; a gentle way to try many characters

Arcade Mode | Ladder fights with ranked routes; good for testing teams against the AI

Local Battle | Couch versus

Training and Combo Challenge | Practice; combo challenges teach each character's key routes

Ranked and Casual Match | Online one-on-one matchmaking

Ring Match and Arena Match | Lobby-based matches with friends and spectators

Party Match | Online 3v3 with each player controlling one character

World Tournament | Online tournaments with in-game rewards

Ranked and Online Play

  • Rollback netcode was added to FighterZ on PC in 2022. Play wired and set region filters for the best connections.
  • Ranked: separate from casual; your rank is based on wins against similar-ranked players.
  • Lobbies: the 3D lobby lets you walk to Ring Matches and Arena Matches with friends.
  • Party Match: 3v3 where each player controls one character.
  • World Tournament: timed tournaments with rewards.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mashing Super Dash. Everyone above beginner rank anti-airs it on reaction.
  • Using Vanish randomly. It is very punishable when blocked or whiffed.
  • Ignoring assists. Assists are what make your neutral and pressure safe.
  • Using Sparking Blast too early. Save it for your last character or a big combo finish.
  • Not blocking low. Most characters' fastest mixups are lows.
  • Only using auto-combos. They work early, but real combos do far more damage and build more meter.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn one BnB per character (bread-and-butter combo) that works midscreen and in the corner.
  • Vanish extensions: end a combo in Vanish to extend damage or set up side switches.
  • DHC for damage: chain supers across characters for massive damage, especially with level 3 supers.
  • Incoming mixups: when an opponent's character dies, the next one comes in; set up pressure on the incoming character.
  • Target the damaged character: when an opponent tags out a character with lots of blue health, keep pressure on the new point so they cannot tag back and recover.
  • Lab your defense: record common pressure in training mode and practise escaping it.
