A practical guide to Company of Heroes 3 in 2026: resources and territory, the four factions and their Battlegroups, opening principles, the anti-blob balance changes in 2.5.0, the new Final Stand wave-defense game, and what's coming in 3.0.
Researched September 2026 — current as of update 2.5.0 (July 29, 2026) and hot fixes through 2.5.6 (September 16, 2026); the major 3.0 update is scheduled for October 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Territory is income. You earn Manpower, Munitions and Fuel from the sectors you hold. Capture and keep connected territory, especially Munitions and Fuel points.
- Victory Points decide the match. Holding more Victory Points than your opponent drains their score. Standard matches are won by ticket bleed, not annihilation.
- Cover is everything. Green shields are heavy cover, yellow are light, red means exposed. Infantry fighting from green cover wins most fair fights.
- Flank machine guns and tanks. HMGs suppress what's in front of them; tanks have weaker side and rear armor. Come from the side.
- Don't blob. As of 2.5.0, massing infantry is deliberately punished: tighter formations, stronger suppression and more artillery scatter hit big clumps harder.
- Pick a Battlegroup early. Each faction chooses one Battlegroup per match; it unlocks call-ins and abilities down a branching tree.
- Retreat before you wipe. A squad that retreats keeps its veterancy. Losing a veteran squad is a big swing.
- Keep an anti-tank plan. Every faction needs AT infantry, AT guns or tank destroyers by the time the first enemy vehicles arrive.
- Use Tactical Pause in single-player. You can pause and queue orders in the campaigns and skirmishes against the AI.
- Watch replays of your losses. The game's replay and observer tools make it easy to see where your army fell apart.
Modes
Mode | What it is
Italian Dynamic Campaign | A turn-based campaign map across Italy, with real-time battles for key objectives. Supply lines, air and naval support.
North African Operation | A story-driven, mission-based campaign with the Deutsches Afrikakorps.
Skirmish and Co-op vs AI | Practice any map and faction against the AI.
Multiplayer | 1v1 to 4v4 ranked and unranked.
Final Stand (standalone) | A separate wave-defense game released with 2.5.0; see below.
Resources and Economy
Resource | What it buys
Manpower | Infantry, most units' base cost, reinforcements
Munitions | Grenades, weapon upgrades, abilities, call-ins
Fuel | Vehicles, tech buildings and upgrades
Rules of thumb:
- Grab Fuel and Munitions points early, and cut off enemy territory where possible.
- Don't float resources. Unspent Manpower is an army you don't have.
- Upkeep grows with army size; a bigger army slightly reduces Manpower income.
- Reinforce squads in the field when possible instead of building new ones; it keeps veterancy.
Combat Fundamentals
- Cover and garrisons: buildings are strong but can be cleared with grenades and flamethrowers, and CoH3 lets infantry breach garrisons to flush units out.
- Suppression: machine guns pin infantry. Pinned squads can't move or fight well. Flank, smoke, or use indirect fire.
- True Sight and elevation: line of sight is blocked by terrain and obstacles, and high ground gives better vision. Scout with light units.
- Vehicle armor: frontal armor is thickest. Flank tanks, and use AT guns from angles they can't cover.
- Veterancy: units gain experience and become more effective. Preserve them.
- Retreat: always retreat a squad that's losing; it runs to your base and can be reinforced.
Factions and Battlegroups
Each faction has a distinct build structure and six to eight Battlegroups to choose from (as listed on coh3stats' faction explorer in September 2026). Some are paid DLC, such as the 2026 Dare & Destroy Battlegroup DLC, so check which ones you own in the lobby.
US Forces
Build structures: Headquarters, Barracks, Weapon Support Center, Motor Pool, Tank Depot, plus the Infantry, Mechanized and Air Support Centers for upgrades.
Battlegroups: Airborne, Armored, Advanced Infantry, Special Operations, Italian Partisan, Free French.
Style: versatile, infantry-strong. Riflemen are your backbone; they scale with upgrades and weapons. Airborne and Advanced Infantry (Rangers) reward infantry-heavy play; Armored leans on tanks.
Wehrmacht
Build structures: Headquarters (Pioneers and Kettenkrad), Infanterie Kompanie (Grenadiers, HMG teams, mortars, snipers), Luftwaffe Kompanie (Jägers, Flak 30, 221 Scout Car, Marder III M, Wirbelwind), Panzergrenadier Kompanie (Panzergrenadiers, 251 carrier, Pak 40, Nebelwerfer 42, StuG III G), Panzer Kompanie (Stoßtruppen, Panzer IV, Sturmpanzer IV).
Battlegroups: Breakthrough, Italian Coastal, Last Stand, Luftwaffe, Mechanized, Siege Breaker, Terror.
Style: strong defensive tools and team weapons; Grenadiers hold ground while Panzergrenadiers and armor push.
British Forces
Build structures: Headquarters (Royal Engineers, Vickers MG), Section Command Post (Infantry Sections, 3-inch mortar, Dingo), Platoon Command Post (6-pounder, Humber Armored Car, CMP 15cwt truck), Company Command Post (Foot Guards, Crusader II, Matilda II), and a Training Center that provides veterancy upgrades.
Battlegroups: Australian Defense, Air and Sea, Heavy Armor, Canadian Shock, Indian Artillery, Polish Cavalry, Special Service.
Style: strong in cover and on defense; excellent artillery and durable tanks. Infantry Sections do best when set up in good cover.
Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK)
Build structures: Headquarters, Light Support Kompanie, Mechanized Kompanie, Panzerarmee Kommand and an Armory for vehicle and infantry upgrades.
Battlegroups: Armored Support, Elite Forces, Panzer Elite (veteran crews and tank modifications), Italian Combined Arms (Bersaglieri and Italian tanks), Italian Infantry (Guastatori, defenses, light vehicles), Kriegsmarine, Panzerjäger Kommand, Battlefield Espionage.
Style: vehicle-heavy and mobile early, with upgrades flowing through the Armory; Italian battlegroups add infantry and artillery depth.
Opening Principles (Any Faction)
- First units capture. Your opening squads should spread to take nearby points quickly.
- Get a support weapon or light vehicle out on time to hold ground and punish early infantry.
- Take a Fuel point as a priority; tech and vehicles depend on it.
- Choose your first tech path by what you see. If the enemy is infantry-heavy, go for suppression, flamers or light vehicles; if they're going vehicles, get AT ready.
- Pick your Battlegroup based on the matchup and map, then spend its points on the branch that fits the game.
- Always have something ready for the first enemy vehicle.
Update 2.5.0: The Anti-Blob Changes
2.5.0 (July 29, 2026) was a first major step against massing units ("blobbing"), focused on infantry. Key changes:
- Infantry formations tightened by 0.5 to 1 meters, making squads more vulnerable to area damage.
- Suppression strengthened; squads recover only when not under fire.
- HMG accuracy against units in cover was reduced.
- Light artillery scatter increased (angle from 6 to 10, max distance from 5 to 11.25).
- Direct-fire vehicle movement scatter standardized (max 1.25 distance scatter on the move), so firing while moving is less reliable.
What it means: spread your infantry, use multiple lanes, and bring suppression and artillery to punish enemies who clump. The 3.0 update is expected to continue this with changes targeting vehicle massing.
New maps in 2.5.0: Butcher & Bolt (1v1) and Across the Savio (3v3), added to all modes.
Hot fixes: 2.5.5 fixed an exploit that let some artillery units barrage without cooldown; 2.5.6 fixed an exploit that brought Final Stand perks into multiplayer.
Final Stand (Standalone Wave Defense)
- A separate product released alongside 2.5.0, with a bonus 20% discount for Company of Heroes 3 owners (on top of a 10% launch discount).
- Survive 12 escalating waves.
- Solo or co-op, with a public/private co-op lobby browser added in hot fix 2.5.1.
- Five Battlegrounds at launch, with a sixth planned in the 3.0 update.
- Forces drawn from all four factions, with dynamic battlefield events and bosses (such as a Wespe artillery boss).
- Perks persist between runs and sync through Steam Cloud since hot fix 2.5.2.
Tips: layer defenses in depth, put machine guns on infantry lanes and AT guns on vehicle routes, and prioritize long-range artillery bosses early.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Blobbing all your infantry together. It's weaker than ever after 2.5.0.
- Attacking HMGs head-on. Flank or smoke.
- Letting squads wipe. Retreat early and preserve veterancy.
- Ignoring Fuel. Without it, you'll face tanks with nothing but infantry.
- No AT plan. Losing to the first light vehicle is the classic beginner loss.
- Driving tanks alone into the fog. AT guns and mines punish unsupported armor.
- Floating resources. Spend them.
Advanced Tips
- Read the Battlegroup tree before the match. Plan which branch you'll take to counter what the opponent's faction typically does.
- Use elevation. High ground and True Sight give vision advantages that win engagements before they start.
- Breach garrisons. Don't fight a garrisoned MG from the street; use grenades, flamers or breaching.
- Split your army across lanes. Multiple smaller groups hold more territory and are harder to punish with artillery.
- Time your tech. Teching too early leaves you short of units; too late and enemy vehicles run you over.
- Watch patch notes. 3.0 is expected in October 2026 with more balance work and a weather change in parts of the Mediterranean.
