A practical guide to the Remastered Collection: what's in it, hotkeys, economy and base-building rules, faction notes for Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, campaign and secret missions, achievements, multiplayer and mods.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the August 2020 update (LAN play, balance pass, community Quickmatch maps); no further game patches since. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You get two full games plus expansions. Tiberian Dawn (with The Covert Operations) and Red Alert (with Counterstrike and The Aftermath), plus the console-exclusive missions, for over 100 campaign missions.
  • Press Space to swap graphics. In solo play you can toggle between the classic and remastered art at any time.
  • Money wins games. Keep harvesters running, build a second refinery early, and add silos when your credits stop climbing.
  • Learn force-move and force-fire. Alt-click to force move (crush infantry with tanks), Ctrl-click to force attack (bridges, trees, buildings).
  • Group your army. Ctrl plus a number creates a control group; press the number to select it.
  • Use Guard (G) and Stop (S). Guard stops units from being baited away; Stop cancels chases.
  • Play the missions on Normal first. Hard is a real step up, and two of the rarest achievements (The Best Around and DEFCON None.) require finishing every campaign mission on the hardest difficulty.
  • Unlock the secret campaigns. The dinosaur missions (Tiberian Dawn) and the ant missions (Red Alert) are hidden behind main-menu tricks listed below.

What's in the Collection

Game | Expansions and extras

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn | The Covert Operations, console missions, secret dinosaur missions

Command & Conquer: Red Alert | Counterstrike, The Aftermath, console missions, secret ant missions

Remaster features include 4K art with a live classic/remastered toggle, a redesigned sidebar with less scrolling, a jukebox with more than 7 hours of music (including tracks re-recorded by Frank Klepacki and the Tiberian Sons), a bonus gallery, a Map Editor, Steam Workshop mods, replays and observer mode, 1v1 Quickmatch with leaderboards, custom lobbies, and skirmish for Tiberian Dawn (new to that game).

The engine is the original game logic with bug fixes, and the Remaster gave Tiberian Dawn Red Alert's better AI. EA released the Remaster's back-end source code shortly before launch in June 2020, and the original games' source code followed in 2025, which is why the mod scene is healthy.

Hotkeys

Key | Action

Ctrl + 1-0 | Create control group

1-0 | Select control group

Ctrl + Alt + left click | Guard/escort a specific unit

These are the classic defaults carried into the Remaster. Hotkeys are fully customizable in the options menu (including the new sidebar), so check the Hotkeys screen for "select all", sidebar-tab and camera bindings on your install.

Economy Rules

  • Tiberium and ore are your only income. Harvesters bring resources to a Refinery; each Refinery comes with a harvester.
  • Two refineries early. A second refinery doubles income and gives you a spare harvester. It's usually the best first investment after power and barracks.
  • Silos. In Tiberian Dawn you lose excess Tiberium when storage is full. Build Silos when the credit counter stops climbing, or queue an expensive structure to soak up credits.
  • Protect harvesters. They are slow and your whole economy. Escort them or put defenses near the fields.
  • Power. Low power slows production and disables some defenses. Always build power before big structures.
  • Selling. You can sell buildings for a partial refund, which is useful in emergencies.

Typical opening

  • Power plant.
  • Barracks (or Hand of Nod for Nod).
  • Refinery.
  • Second refinery or war factory, depending on pressure.
  • More power, then war factory and defenses.

Scout early with a cheap fast unit so you know where the enemy is and which way attacks will come from.

Tiberian Dawn Faction Notes

GDI

  • Strengths: durable armor and the heaviest tank in the game.
  • Key units: Minigunner, Grenadier, Rocket Soldier, Engineer, Commando (late), Humvee, APC, Medium Tank, Mammoth Tank, MRLS (rocket launcher), Orca.
  • Key structures: Advanced Guard Tower, Advanced Communications Center, which unlocks the Ion Cannon.
  • Play style: mass Medium Tanks backed by Rocket Soldiers, add Mammoths and Orcas later.

Nod

  • Strengths: speed, stealth and firepower from range.
  • Key units: Recon Bike, Nod Buggy, Light Tank, Flame Tank, Stealth Tank, Artillery, SSM Launcher, Chem Warrior.
  • Key structures: Hand of Nod, Airstrip, Obelisk of Light, Temple of Nod, which unlocks the nuclear strike.
  • Play style: harass harvesters with bikes and buggies, use artillery out of range of defenses, and ambush with Stealth Tanks.

Red Alert Faction Notes

Allies

  • Strengths: mobility, naval power and tricks.
  • Key units: Rifle Infantry, Rocket Soldier, Engineer, Medic, Spy, Tanya, Ranger, Light Tank, Medium Tank, Artillery, Mine Layer, destroyers, Cruiser.
  • Key structures: Gap Generator, Chronosphere.
  • Play style: combine Medium Tanks with Artillery, control water where available, and use Spies for intel and sabotage.

Soviets

  • Strengths: raw armor and heavy firepower.
  • Key units: Rifle Infantry, Grenadier, Flamethrower, Attack Dog, Heavy Tank, Mammoth Tank, V2 Rocket Launcher, MiG, Yak, Hind, submarines.
  • Key structures: Tesla Coil, Iron Curtain.
  • Play style: mass Heavy Tanks, anchor bases with Tesla Coils, and use V2s to crack defenses.

The Aftermath additions

The Aftermath expansion adds new units to both sides, such as the Tesla Tank, Shock Trooper, Demolition Truck, MAD Tank and Chrono Tank. These are available in its missions and in multiplayer and skirmish setups that enable them.

Campaign Tips

  • Save often. The classic missions can punish one mistake. Use save and load freely in campaign.
  • Engineers capture buildings. Capturing an enemy Construction Yard or production structure can win a mission outright or give you the other side's tech.
  • Sandbags and walls block the AI's pathing in Tiberian Dawn; use them to funnel attacks.
  • Force-attack trees to clear vision near your base or bridges, and force-attack bridges to cut attack routes.
  • Scatter (X) helps infantry avoid being crushed by tanks and spreads units against artillery.
  • Mission select screen. The Remaster tracks every mission and variant, so you can replay any mission and pick up missing variants later.

Secret missions

These are the community-documented unlock methods; the missions themselves (Tiberian Dawn's Fun Park and Red Alert's "It Came from Red Alert") are confirmed by their achievements.

  • Tiberian Dawn dinosaur missions: on the main menu, click the four bolts in the corners of the screen (top-left, top-right, bottom-right, bottom-left).
  • Red Alert ant missions: hold Shift and click the speaker icon in the top-right corner of the main menu.

Achievements

Useful notes from the community achievement guides:

  • Historian achievements (Tiberian Historian and Red Alert Historian) require unlocking all Bonus Gallery content for that game. Gallery items unlock through campaign progress, so in practice you need every mission, including the alternate A and B map variants.
  • Secret-campaign achievements: "Life... Finds a Way" for completing the Tiberian Dawn Fun Park (dinosaur) missions and "Ants?" for completing all the "It Came from Red Alert" ant missions.
  • The Best Around (all Tiberian Dawn missions) and DEFCON None. (all Red Alert campaign missions) are for the hardest difficulty; both are among the rarest achievements (around 1% of players).
  • Hardest-difficulty achievements are reported by the community to be buggy. The common workaround is temporarily moving your settings file (Player_TD_settings_1.bin or Player_RA_settings_1.bin) and replaying the relevant missions. Back up files first.
  • Death From Above requires the final blow on the Temple of Nod in the last GDI mission to come from the Ion Cannon. Damage it into the red with ground units first.
  • Many cumulative achievements (units built, superweapons used, structures captured) count across campaign, skirmish and multiplayer.
  • The secret dinosaur and ant missions do not count toward the hard-mode requirements.

Multiplayer and Skirmish

  • Quickmatch is 1v1 ranked with a leaderboard, played on a rotating map pool that includes community maps added in the August 2020 update.
  • Custom lobbies let you set rules, teams and maps.
  • LAN play was added in the August 2020 update so mods can be played in multiplayer.
  • Replays and observer mode are built in. Watching a replay of a loss is the fastest way to improve.
  • Skirmish vs AI with adjustable difficulty is available for both games.

Multiplayer fundamentals

  • Build order efficiency matters more than unit choice early.
  • Harass harvesters. Killing one sets the opponent back more than killing several combat units.
  • Don't over-build static defense; tanks win most mid-game fights.
  • Keep producing from every factory constantly.

Mods and the Map Editor

  • Mods are on Steam Workshop. Subscribe, then enable them from the in-game mods menu.
  • The Map Editor lets you build custom skirmish and campaign maps.
  • The released source code means large community mods and patches exist; check the Workshop for the most popular ones.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only one refinery. Your economy will lag behind the AI on harder missions.
  • Forgetting silos in Tiberian Dawn and wasting harvested Tiberium.
  • Low power. Production and defenses suffer.
  • Unescorted harvesters.
  • Chasing retreating units into defenses. Use Stop and Guard.
  • Moving tanks into infantry without force-move. Crushing infantry with Alt-click is free damage.
  • Skipping mission variants if you care about the Historian achievements.

Advanced Tips

  • Engineer rushes into a Construction Yard can end games or missions early.
  • Spies in Red Alert reveal information depending on the building they infiltrate; a Spy in a Radar Dome or production building is a strong play.
  • Artillery out-ranges most static defense; use it to break Obelisks, Tesla Coils and turrets.
  • Queue production. The Remaster supports unit queueing; keep queues full.
  • Camera zoom lets you choose between the classic DOS and Gold view distance; the wider view is better for multiplayer.
