First-day priorities, base building, taming and breeding, tech progression from thatch to Tek, boss prep, and what is arriving in the September 30, 2026 update.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Astraeos 1.0 "Heaven and Abyss" (August 27, 2026) and the upcoming Unreal Engine 5.8 / Therizinosaurus TLC / Cerberax / Gargantar update (September 30, 2026). ASA is still in Early Access. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick your mode. Single-player and non-dedicated sessions let you change rates (taming, harvesting, XP). Official PvP servers are brutal for new players; official PvE or unofficial PvE servers are much friendlier.
- Spawn on an easy beach. On The Island, the south beaches are the classic easy start.
- Punch trees and bushes first. Get Thatch, Wood, Fiber and Berries, then craft a Stone Pick and Stone Hatchet.
- Spend your first engram points on essentials: Stone Pick, Stone Hatchet, Spear, Campfire, Hide/Cloth clothing, Thatch structures, then Bow and Narcotics.
- Drink and eat. Keep a Waterskin once you can craft it and eat cooked meat, not raw.
- Build a small base early. Even a thatch hut with a door and a bed lets you respawn close to your stuff.
- Tame something as soon as you can. A Dilophosaur, Parasaur or Triceratops early makes gathering and defense far easier.
- Level Health and Weight early, then Stamina and Melee depending on playstyle.
- Avoid swamps, redwoods and dense jungles early. Those areas hold aggressive predators and Titanoboas/Arthropleura on some maps.
- Recover your body after dying. Your corpse (and then a loot bag) keeps your items for a limited time and shows on the map/HUD; respawn nearby and grab it before it despawns.
What Is New (September 2026)
Date | Content
August 27, 2026 | Astraeos 1.0 "Heaven and Abyss": final update to the paid Greek-myth map (264 km2), adding Helianthos (flying islands), Abyssanthos (deep-sea city with underwater bubbles you can build in), Triremes, and rolling wave physics
Late August 2026 | Galleon: a huge buildable warship with cannons for sea bases, usable on Astraeos and Genesis
September 4, 2026 | Structure decay re-enabled and transfers opened for Genesis Part 1 on official servers
September 30, 2026 | Unreal Engine 5.8 upgrade (rolling out in stages), Therizinosaurus TLC (new movement, bounding hop, claw swipe, role-based looks), Cerberax (for ARK Fantastic Tames Season 1 owners; the season's second creature after the Burrowbuck), Gargantar (for ARK: Dragontopia owners)
New creatures quick reference
- Therizinosaurus (TLC, free): Still a top harvester (fiber, berries, wood with the right stats). The TLC adds smoother movement, a hop for rough terrain and a new claw swipe attack.
- Cerberax (paid, Fantastic Tames Season 1): Three-headed canid with fire and venom. Taming requires satisfying three heads separately: one wants you to wrestle for control, one responds to food, and one bonds through hunting.
- Gargantar (paid, Dragontopia): Dragon that gets tougher the more it eats, can carry allies safely in its belly, and can swallow enemies.
- Boaratos (Astraeos): Fiery boar bruiser that causes bleed and can burn trees while harvesting.
Survival Stats
Stat | What it does | Level it?
Health | Survive fights and falls | Yes, early and often
Stamina | Sprinting, swimming, harvesting, melee | Some
Oxygen | Underwater time | For divers and cave runs
Food / Water | How long before starving/dehydration | Rarely
Weight | Carry capacity | Yes, early
Melee Damage | Punches and melee weapons; also affects harvesting | For fighters
Fortitude | Temperature and torpor resistance | Cold/hot maps
Crafting Skill | Better quality from blueprints | For crafters
Temperature: Hide or fur gear for cold, cloth or ghillie for heat. Watch the temperature indicator in the HUD.
Your First Day
- Gather Thatch, Wood, Fiber, Flint and Stone. Craft Stone Pick (flint and wood) and Stone Hatchet.
- Make a Spear and a set of Cloth or Hide armor.
- Build a Campfire, cook meat from small creatures like Dodos.
- Set down a Sleeping Bag or Bed near your first base location.
- Craft a Bow and make Narcotics (from Narcoberries and Spoiled Meat) or Tranquilizer Arrows once unlocked.
- Knock out and tame your first creature.
Safe early base spots: Near fresh water, flat ground, away from predators' spawn zones, and ideally near metal/stone for later.
Taming
Knockout taming
- Knock the creature unconscious with slingshot, club, bow with Tranquilizer Arrows, or later Tranq Darts.
- Put its preferred food (kibble is best, then raw prime meat or mejoberries depending on diet) in its last-slot inventory.
- Keep it unconscious with Narcotics or Narcoberries; protect it from other creatures.
Passive taming
Some creatures (e.g. Lystrosaurus, Ovis, Moschops, Achatina) are tamed by feeding while they are awake. Approach while crouched and feed from the hotbar.
Early tame priorities
Creature | Why
Parasaur | Gathers berries, carries things, early mount
Triceratops | Tanky early fighter and berry gatherer
Raptor | Fast mount for hunting
Pteranodon | First flyer for scouting
Ankylosaurus | Metal and stone harvesting
Doedicurus | Stone harvesting, great tank
Castoroides (beaver) | Wood harvesting, weight carrying
Argentavis | Heavy-lifting flyer
Therizinosaurus | Fiber and wood powerhouse
Rex / Giganotosaurus | Endgame combat and boss fights
Breeding and imprinting
- Pair a male and female tame, enable mating, and incubate eggs (use air conditioners or campfires to keep them at the right temperature) or wait for gestation for mammals.
- Imprint baby creatures by responding to their care requests; it boosts stats and damage when ridden by the imprinter.
- Mutations rarely add stat points; serious breeders stack them over generations.
Base Building and Tech Progression
Tier | Material | Notes
Thatch | Thatch, wood | Very weak; temporary only
Wood | Wood | Early base
Stone | Stone, wood, thatch | Much tougher; stops most early wild creatures
Metal | Metal Ingots (Forge smelting) | Strong; needs Metal ore from mountains
Tek | Element and Tek engrams (from bosses) | Endgame
Key crafting stations: Mortar and Pestle (Narcotics, gunpowder), Smithy (tools, saddles), Forge (metal ingots), Preserving Bin (food), Fabricator (advanced gear), Industrial Forge and Chemistry Bench later.
Building tips:
- Use foundations and pillars; build on flat ground.
- Place a behemoth gate early if you plan to tame big creatures.
- Store resources in Storage Boxes; label them.
- On PvP, hide your base and build multiple layers of walls, turrets and decoys.
Maps
ASA includes remastered versions of ARK's worlds at no extra cost. The Island, Scorched Earth, The Center, Aberration, Extinction, Ragnarok, Valguero (the last two originally community-made maps) and Genesis Part 1 are available now; Genesis Part 2 is still to come. Astraeos and Lost Colony are paid DLC maps; ARK: Dragontopia and ARK Fantastic Tames are paid creature packs/content.
Beginner-friendly order: The Island, then The Center or Ragnarok, then Scorched Earth (heat, wyverns) and Aberration (no flyers, radiation, much harder).
Boss Progression (The Island)
- Artifacts come from caves (e.g. the Artifact of the Hunter, the Clever, the Massive). Caves often limit which creatures can enter.
- Tributes (trophies and creature drops) are also required.
- Summon bosses at Obelisks (red, green, blue). Bosses: Broodmother Lysrix, Megapithecus, Dragon, and finally the Overseer in the Tek Cave.
- Bring many high-level, well-bred Rexes or similar, plus saddles of good quality. Difficulty tiers (Gamma, Beta, Alpha) change tribute costs and rewards.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Staying in thatch too long; one wild predator can wipe your base.
- Leveling Oxygen or Food early instead of Health and Weight.
- Leaving tames on wander or not setting them to "passive" or "neutral" appropriately.
- Knocking out a creature and leaving it unguarded while you gather narcotics.
- Flying over unexplored regions at night.
- Ignoring structure decay timers on official servers.
- Taming everything; feeding a zoo costs time.
Advanced Tips
- Kibble is the most efficient taming food; you need eggs from specific creatures and a Cooking Pot.
- Farm Metal with an Ankylosaurus into an Argentavis/Castoroides with weight reduction.
- Cryopods (where enabled on your map/server) let you store tames compactly and transport them.
- Mod browser: ASA has cross-platform mods (maps, creatures, QoL) built into the game. Great for single-player; on official servers, mods are not available.
- After the UE 5.8 rollout, re-check graphics settings; Epic's newer versions can change Lumen and upscaling behavior. Studio Wildcard said the upgrade rolls out in stages.
- Galleon bases are strong mobile PvE bases on water maps, but plan defenses; seas are rougher with new wave physics.
