A practical guide to World War Z (including the Aftermath content): classes, special zombies, weapons and upgrades, difficulty progression, Horde Mode Z, and team tactics, plus what's coming with the October 2026 update.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Limitless Strain update (June 2026), the June 30, 2026 hotfix, and the announced Waves of Lead update (October 5, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's a 4-player co-op horde shooter. Bots fill empty slots, but human teammates are far better on higher difficulties.
  • Pick a class and stick with it early. Classes level up separately, and each level unlocks perks. A leveled class is dramatically stronger than a fresh one.
  • Mission rewards buy your upgrades. Every mission pays out currency and XP that you spend on class perks and weapon upgrades. Saber's bonus events boost the Blue and Yellow Coins alongside XP, so those weekends are the time to grind.
  • Special zombies are the real threat. The horde is dangerous in numbers, but Bulls, Screamers, Gasbags, Lurkers, and Infectors are what wipe teams. Learn to spot and prioritize them.
  • Use the level's defenses. Many missions give you turrets, barbed wire, and mines before big swarm events. Set them up before the horde arrives.
  • Stick together. Revives and shared fire lanes matter more than personal kills.
  • Climb difficulty slowly. Easy, Normal, Hard, Insane, and Extreme scale enemy damage and specials. Don't jump into Insane with an unleveled class.
  • Watch for bonus events. Saber runs frequent Double XP events with 1.5x Blue and Yellow Coins. The latest ran for the Aftermath 5th anniversary until September 22, 2026.

Classes

There are eight classes: Gunslinger, Hellraiser, Slasher, Medic, Fixer, Exterminator, Dronemaster, and Vanguard (added in Aftermath). Each has its own perk tree, starting loadout, and a signature ability or item.

Class | Role | Best at

Gunslinger | Ranged DPS | Consistent gun damage and ammo efficiency

Hellraiser | Explosives | Clearing swarms and choke points with explosives

Slasher | Melee | Close-range crowd control, fighting at the wall

Medic | Healer | Keeping the team alive and reviving, vital on high difficulties

Fixer | Support / ammo | Ammo and supplies for the team, explosives support

Exterminator | Crowd control | Area denial, thinning hordes

Dronemaster | Support / utility | A drone that helps teammates and scouts

Vanguard | Defense (Aftermath) | Shield-based frontline that holds lines and protects allies

Beginner picks:

  • Medic is always welcome and teaches team play.
  • Gunslinger is simple and strong.
  • Fixer keeps everyone stocked on ammo, which is huge on long maps.

Perk trees: each level unlocks a choice. You buy perks with the currency you earn from missions, and many perks come in pairs where you choose one. Read them. Some change your playstyle, like explosive or melee focus.

Special Zombies

Special | What it does | How to handle it

Bull | Armored charger that grabs and slams a survivor | Dodge sideways and focus fire on it. Explosives help.

Screamer | Calls in more hordes while alive | Kill it immediately. It's the top priority.

Gasbag | Releases toxic gas | Kill it at range. Don't fight inside the cloud.

Lurker | Hides, then pounces and pins a survivor | Teammates must free the pinned player fast

Infector | A later-added special whose attacks infect survivors | Keep your distance, focus fire, and get infected teammates healed

Rat swarms | Rodent hordes in the Aftermath episodes | Area damage and fire

Rule: call out specials on voice or with pings. Most wipes start with a Screamer left alive or a Bull catching someone alone.

Special priority order

When several specials show up at once, kill them in roughly this order:

  • Screamer. Every second it lives means more zombies.
  • Anything pinning a teammate (Lurker, Bull mid-slam). A pinned player takes constant damage and can't shoot.
  • Gasbag, before it gets close enough to gas your position. Shoot it at range so the cloud lands away from you.
  • Bull, once nobody is pinned. It's a damage sponge, so pour explosives and focused fire into it while dodging its charge.
  • Infector, and everything else.

Spread the job: one player (often the Gunslinger) watches for Screamers and Gasbags at range while the rest hold the horde.

Weapons and Upgrades

  • Weapon tiers: weapons are grouped by type (pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, shotguns, snipers, heavy weapons, explosives), and each has upgrade tiers you unlock with supplies.
  • Upgrade paths: each upgrade tier adds stats and attachment options. Upgrade the weapon types your main class uses first.
  • Weapon Perks (Limitless Strain, June 2026): seven new Weapon Perks were added: Triple Shot, Home Stretch, Dance Till The End, (Un)natural Magnetism, Bullets Cashback, To Your Health, and Delayed Explosion. Try them on your main weapon and keep what suits your class.
  • Heavy weapons found in levels (like grenade launchers and miniguns) are for swarm events. Don't waste them on stragglers.
  • Cosmetics: premium weapon skin packs, such as the Chibi Bunko and Chibi Daniela packs from June 2026, are purely visual.

Game Modes

Mode | Notes

Campaign episodes | Multi-level stories in cities around the world (see below)

Horde Mode Z | Wave survival. You spend resources on defenses between waves.

Daily Challenges | Rotating objectives for extra rewards

PvPvZ | Two player teams fight each other while zombies attack both

Private lobbies with Mutators | Custom modifiers

Campaign episodes

Each episode is a set of three to five connected missions with its own group of survivors.

Episode | Notes

New York | The launch episode and the easiest place to learn swarm events and defenses

Jerusalem | Launch episode, famous for massive wall-climbing hordes

Moscow | Launch episode

Tokyo | Launch episode

Marseille | Added after launch, before Aftermath

Rome and Kamchatka | Aftermath's six new missions (September 2021). Rat swarms appear here.

Wikipedia counts nine locations in total as of 2026, so later updates have added more. Check the in-game episode list for anything newer.

Campaign tips:

  • Replay early New York missions to level a new class. They're short and forgiving.
  • Swarm events are scripted. After one run you'll know where they come from, so set defenses there first.
  • Collectibles and side objectives add a little extra reward but pull people away from the group. Only chase them on difficulties you're comfortable on.

PvPvZ

World War Z has five competitive modes built around two player teams fighting each other while the zombie horde attacks both. The swarm is a third player: fighting where the horde is already hitting the enemy team is often worth more than a straight gunfight. Treat it as a side mode. The co-op campaign and Horde Mode Z are where the playerbase and the updates are.

Horde Mode Z

  • Survive waves on a map, spending resources between waves on defenses such as barbed wire and mortars.
  • Limitless Strain (June 2026) added daily Horde challenges on challenge maps, including:
  • Goalkeeper: don't let zombies damage the last gate during 4 waves.
  • Foreman: set barbed wire 7 times.
  • Force Method: set mortars 7 times.
  • Buyer: spend 1,500 resources.
  • Rotation: kill 1,000 zombies.
  • I Will Survive: survive 10 waves on Hard.
  • Die But Do It: complete 5 side objectives.
  • Mutators add twists:
  • Horde Mode: Lethal Fumes, Power Cut, Overheat, Copycat, Deafening Scream.
  • Private lobby: Lethal Fumes, Still Alive.

Horde tips:

  • Put wire and mortars at the choke point the zombies actually use, not the one you'd expect.
  • Spend on defenses early. Waves scale faster than your resource income.
  • Side objectives give rewards but split the team. Send two people, never one.

Difficulty Progression

Difficulty | Who it's for

Easy / Normal | Learning maps, leveling a new class

Hard | Leveled classes with upgraded weapons

Insane | Coordinated teams, high-level perks

Extreme | Max-level classes, tight teamwork, voice comms

Leveling tip: play the highest difficulty you can clear reliably. Failing an Insane run is worse than clearing Hard. Save the XP-boost weekends (Double XP events) for grinding new classes.

Team Tactics

  • Hold a spot during swarm events. Pick a spot with one or two approach paths, preferably higher ground, and place the provided defenses.
  • Assign lanes. Each player covers one direction.
  • Reload in turns. Never let the whole team reload at once.
  • Revive smart. Clear or block the nearby horde before you revive, or you'll both go down.
  • Share ammo and healing. Fixers drop ammo, and Medics should heal before someone is critical.
  • Explosive placement: Hellraisers and Fixers should throw and place explosives where the horde will be, not where teammates are standing, and never in the choke point your Slasher is holding. Check whether friendly fire is on for your difficulty in the lobby settings.
  • Carry heavies to the swarm. Level-placed heavy weapons are limited. Hand them to whoever holds the main approach.

First-Person Mode and Settings

  • Aftermath added an optional first-person mode. Some players aim better with it, while third person gives you more awareness. Try both.
  • Matchmaking: use the official Discord (discord.gg/wwz) to find groups for higher difficulties.
  • The June 30, 2026 hotfix fixed APAC matchmaking, loading-screen hangs, and rare crashes. If you had those issues before, try again.

What's Next: Waves of Lead

Saber announced the Waves of Lead update for October 5, 2026. Details weren't published as of late September. Check the Steam news page on release day.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Class-hopping early. Your perks stay locked and you'll stay weak.
  • Ignoring Screamers. One alive Screamer can double a swarm.
  • Running ahead alone. Lurkers and Bulls punish isolation.
  • Wasting supplies on weapons you don't use. Upgrade your main class's weapons first.
  • Skipping defenses before swarm events and in Horde Mode.
  • Jumping to Insane or Extreme too soon. Enemy damage and special frequency scale hard.
  • Standing in Gasbag gas.

Advanced Tips

  • Perk synergy: build around one strong idea, such as ammo sustain, explosive damage, or melee survival, rather than mixing unrelated perks.
  • Weapon Perks: the Limitless Strain perks like Bullets Cashback (ammo sustain) and Delayed Explosion (burst damage) can define a build. Test them on Hard before you rely on them on Extreme.
  • Mutators for practice: private lobbies with mutators like Still Alive are good for drilling hard scenarios.
  • Bonus weekends: Double XP plus 1.5x coin events happen around holidays and anniversaries (Labor Day and the Aftermath anniversary in September 2026). Save grinding for them.
  • Mix the team: a Medic, a Fixer, and two damage classes is a reliable setup for high difficulties.
