How Bulkhead's 100-player, three-team "Tactical All-Out Warfare" shooter actually plays: the Control Zone and Hot Zone, the cash economy, loadouts, FOBs, vehicles, prisoners, and how to earn money instead of losing it.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Early Access launch build (PC, Early Access since September 10, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Early Access warning: WARDOGS is only a few weeks into Early Access. Prices and payouts in this guide come from official descriptions and early community testing. Expect them to change with patches.

Quick Start

  • Staying in the zone is how you win. Every tick, the team with the most players inside the Control Zone scores. First team to 100 points wins. Kills only matter if they keep your team in the zone.
  • The Hot Zone pays double. It's a smaller area inside the Control Zone where your presence counts double and pays more cash. It's also where the heaviest fighting is.
  • Cash is king, and it carries over. You start with $10,000. Money you earn or spend carries between matches, so a bad loadout choice costs you next game too.
  • There are no classes. You buy whatever gear fits the role you want: medic, sniper, engineer, pilot, or rifleman.
  • Every team action pays. Reviving, driving teammates to the zone, delivering supplies, assists, and holding the objective all earn cash, not just kills.
  • Bring smokes and a defib. Community players consistently name white smokes and a defibrillator as the most valuable things for new infantry.
  • Use quick rebuy. After your first death, rebuying your last kit is one button, so you spend less time in menus.
  • Three teams means someone is always flanking. Fight the team that's winning on points and avoid getting stuck in a long fight with the third team.
  • Join a squad. Solo play works, but squads earn more from revives, heals, and transport.

The Basics

Item | Details

Developer / publisher | Bulkhead / Team17

Engine | Unreal Engine 5

Platforms | PC (Steam Early Access). Consoles planned for 2028

Match | Up to 100 players in three mercenary factions

Factions | Lonestar (blue), Valkyra (red), Manticore (green)

Map | A large open battlefield with a randomized 2x2 km Control Zone each match

Win condition | First team to 100 points from holding the zone

Monetization | Premium purchase: US$39.99 Standard, plus a Supporter Edition that adds a cosmetic pack. Bulkhead plans to raise the price to $49.99 at version 0.5 (about 12 months in) and $59.99 at full release

Early Access length | 1 to 2 years planned, adding maps, weapons, vehicles (including fighter jets), and progression

Next season | Season 02 launches October 15, 2026 with a new weather system (rain) and a full seasonal reset of unlocks and ranks

Teams use a drop-in/drop-out system and are designed to work even when they're uneven.

Scoring: Control Zone and Hot Zone

  • Control Zone (CZ): a 2x2 km area placed somewhere different each match. Points tick about every ten seconds, and the team with the most players inside scores.
  • Hot Zone (HZ): a smaller, moving area inside the CZ where each player counts double for control. Players report it pays more cash, too.
  • Towers hold code fragments that, according to community guides, can force the Hot Zone to move. Holding towers lets you move the fight away from your enemies' strongpoints.
  • Drills (built at FOBs) are reported by community players to pull the zone toward your team's position. Protecting a drill protects your team's advantage. Neither mechanic is documented officially yet, so test it in your own matches.

What this means in practice:

  • Staying alive inside the HZ is the most valuable thing an infantry player can do. Community players report roughly $340–$760 per point tick for being in the HZ (early-access figure).
  • If your team is losing the HZ, move to towers and drills. They can move the fight to ground your team controls.
  • Don't chase kills outside the zone unless they protect a drill, tower, or FOB.

The Economy

Your wallet is your progression.

How you earn

Source | Notes

Zone presence | The biggest steady income. The Hot Zone pays double

Kills and assists | Good money, but only if you survive to spend it

Revives and heals | Healing and reviving squadmates pays both of you

Transport | Driving or flying teammates to the zone pays

Supply delivery | Hauling supplies to FOBs and unpacking pallets pays out

Player-to-player | Bribes (for example, paying for a revive), tips, and taxi fares

Wagers | Bet on hitting your own performance targets

How you lose it

  • Gear you die with. Buying expensive gear is fine if you use it well and stay alive.
  • Vehicle purchases and repairs. A lost helicopter is a big hit.
  • Supply crates and FOB costs.

Season resets and gold bars

  • Cash, XP, and unlocks reset each season. The first reset comes with Season 02 on October 15, 2026, so convert spare cash to gold bars before then.
  • You can convert cash into gold bars, which survive resets and buy cosmetics and emotes.
  • Bulkhead has said there are no microtransactions and no battle pass.

Rule of thumb: keep a buffer of about two full loadouts. If a bad streak brings you below that, play cheap infantry (a medic or smoke-support kit) in the Hot Zone until you've rebuilt your cash.

Building a Loadout

With no classes, your loadout is your role. A community-recommended starter infantry kit costs roughly $10,000–$20,000:

  • Armor and helmet: tier 2 or better.
  • A primary with basic attachments. Keep optics modest. Community advice is no more than 4x even for marksman builds.
  • Medkits and a defibrillator for revives.
  • At least two white smokes. More is better.
  • Grenades for clearing windows and doors and punishing enemies in smoke.
  • Tools for your role (see below).

Skip hollow-point ammo and oversized optics. Community testing found they're rarely worth the cost for infantry.

Role kits

Role | Core purchases | Job

Hot Zone rifleman | Tier 2+ armor, rifle, smokes, grenades, medkit | Stay alive in the HZ and earn every tick

Combat medic | Defib, extra medkits, smokes | Revive and heal for cash. Smoke first, then revive

Breacher / engineer | C4 or IEDs, grenades | Open gates and walls and destroy FOBs and spawn vehicles

Marksman | Up to 4x optic, moves with the squad | Spot for the squad and pick off exposed players. Don't sit in one spot

Artillery / mortar | Mortar built at a base, a range calculator | Indirect fire on FOBs and HZ clusters

Driver / pilot | Vehicle budget plus a repair buffer | Transport income, fire support, and moving the zone fight

Demolition numbers (community-tested, early access)

Target | Charges needed

Blue gate | 1 C4

Hesco block | 4 C4

FOB or spawn vehicle | 6 C4

FOB | A single IED (the cheaper option)

Forward Operating Bases (FOBs)

FOBs are your team's forward spawn and fortress, and they need a steady flow of supplies to keep running.

  • Cost and carry: community guides list a FOB kit at about $7,500. It takes a 2x3 inventory space, so a cheap scout backpack can carry it.
  • Supplies: unpacking supply pallets at a FOB gives the base supplies and pays you (reported at around $720 plus support XP per pallet).
  • Structures you can build include C-RAM (anti-air gun), SAM launchers, mortars, drill rigs, Hesco walls, Bremmer walls, doors, indirect-fire shelters, and spawn-vehicle parking.

Placement tips:

  • Put drills behind towers or cover, angled so enemy mortars can't easily hit them. Spread them out so one barrage can't take out all of them.
  • Give the C-RAM a clear view of the sky. Community builders disagree on low ground versus towers, so test it on your map.
  • Park spawn vehicles under cover or inside walls. They're a top target for enemy breachers.
  • A FOB near the zone but not inside the Hot Zone lasts longer and still gives quick respawns.

Vehicles and Aircraft

  • The game has ground vehicles (including humvees, APC-style spawn vehicles, and tanks, including artillery variants) and helicopters. Fighter jets are planned.
  • Spawn vehicles have rooftop antennas. Shoot them off to disable the enemy's spawn point.
  • Shoot a humvee's tires to stop it, then finish it with a few grenades. Community players report 2 to 3.
  • Helicopters make big money through transport and fire support, but also lose it. Anti-air (C-RAM, SAMs) is part of every good FOB. Helicopter balance is one of the most discussed topics among players right now, so expect changes.

Prisoners of War

You can take enemy players prisoner.

  • Down an enemy.
  • Revive them with a defibrillator.
  • Order them to follow you as a POW.

Some teams build POW camps inside their FOB: fenced areas prisoners can't leave, with separate sections for each enemy faction. Every prisoner is one fewer enemy fighting for the zone. It's an optional, player-made system, so treat it as a fun extra rather than a core tactic.

Controls Worth Knowing

Default keys can be rebound, and some players report rebinding issues (see FAQ).

Key (default) | Action

N | Zoom the minimap (community-reported default)

X | Free your hands (holster) to move faster

Quick rebuy | Rebuy your last loadout after death

Radial / quick slots | Fast access to tools, smokes, and meds

Ping | Mark enemies and acknowledge revive requests

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Chasing kills outside the zone. Zone ticks pay more and win the match.
  • Buying a full sniper kit and camping. Snipers who don't move get smoked and flanked.
  • Reviving without smoke. Smoke first, then defib. Otherwise you're both dead.
  • Wasting money on expensive gear. Hollow-point ammo, huge optics, and expensive vehicles you can't protect drain your wallet.
  • Ignoring the third team. When two teams fight, the third one wins.
  • Letting FOBs starve. A FOB without supplies can't do its job.
  • Emptying your wallet on one kit. Keep a cash buffer, because money carries between matches.

Advanced Tips

  • Target the point leader. Always pressure whichever team is ahead on points, even if another team is closer.
  • Heal together. Squadmates healing each other both earn money. Community players report around $1,600 for a mutual heal cycle.
  • Take enemy revive items. Grab revive gear from fallen enemies to cut your own costs.
  • Use a field stash. Keeping extra supplies in a vehicle lets you rearm mid-match without going back to base.
  • Work with artillery. Use a range and azimuth calculator (community tools exist) and target FOBs, drills, and clusters in the Hot Zone.
  • Move the Hot Zone. Coordinate tower and drill plays so the next Hot Zone lands where your team is already set up.
  • Know when to leave. Leaving a losing position and resetting at a FOB costs less than dying in it.

FAQ

Is WARDOGS free to play? No. It's a paid Early Access game on Steam with Standard and Supporter editions. Bulkhead says there are no microtransactions and no battle pass.

Does my cash carry over between matches? Yes. Your cash persists across matches, starting from $10,000, but cash, XP, and unlocks reset each season. Convert money into gold bars to keep value, since they survive resets and buy cosmetics.

Are there classes? No. You build a role by buying gear: medic, breacher, marksman, pilot, and so on.

How does a team win? By controlling the Control Zone. The team with the most players inside scores each tick, the Hot Zone counts double, and the first team to 100 points wins.

When is the first season reset? Season 02 starts October 15, 2026, with a full reset of seasonal unlocks and ranks and a new rain weather system. Turn spare cash into gold bars before it lands.

Is it coming to PS5 or Xbox? Yes. Consoles are planned for 2028.

I get WD-L020 / WD-L014 errors or a long main-menu load. What do I do? These are known Early Access issues with pinned threads on the Steam forums. Check the official WD-L020 thread and community fix guides, and verify your game files.

My scope zoom stopped working after rebinding keys. Other players report this bug too. A community fix guide exists (see Sources). Resetting the affected binds usually helps.
