This guide covers how Toribash's turn-based joint system works, how to build your first real moves, the popular mods, ranked play under the 2025 ranking system, Qi and belts, the Battle Pass, and the economy.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Toribash 5.76 (29 September 2025), the October 2025 ranking-system update, and Battle Pass: Tangerine (4 October 2025), the latest official Steam posts available when researched; newer seasons may be live. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's turn-based. Both fighters set their joints, the physics runs for a few frames, then it pauses and you set joints again. Nothing depends on reflexes. Planning is everything.
  • You control joints, not moves. Every joint can be put into one of four states (for most joints: extend, contract, hold, relax). A "move" is simply a pattern of joint states over several turns.
  • Use the ghost. The translucent preview shows where your body will go if nothing interferes. Tweak joints until the ghost does what you want before ending the turn.
  • Hold keeps you stable, relax makes you floppy. New players who leave joints relaxed collapse. Put joints in hold when you want them to stay put.
  • Learn one mod at a time. Rooms run different mods (rules, arenas, and body setups). Aikido-style dojos and Judo are the classic starting points.
  • Save replays of moves you like and study good players' replays. Openers (the first turns) are reusable, so build a small library of them.
  • Play online to earn Qi and Battle Pass XP. Multiplayer, Blind Fight, tournaments, events, and quests all count.
  • Toribash is free-to-play. Toricredits (earned) and Shiai Tokens (premium) buy cosmetics. Nothing you buy makes you stronger.

Core Mechanics

Joints and states

The body has joints for the neck, chest, lumbar, abs, pecs, shoulders, elbows, wrists, glutes, hips, knees, and ankles, plus two hands that can grab.

State | What it does

Extend | Pushes the joint open (straightens)

Contract | Pulls the joint closed (bends)

Hold | Locks the joint at its current angle

Relax | Goes limp. Moves only from outside forces

Grab (hands) | Hand sticks to whatever it touches, including the opponent. Ungrab to release

Some joints use directional names instead of extend/contract. Shoulders raise and lower, and the torso joints (chest, lumbar) use left/right-style states, but the idea is the same: two opposite powered directions plus hold and relax. Hover a joint to see its exact state names in your client.

Controls

  • Click a joint to change its state. Joint states and a hand-grab toggle are available on each joint, and the tutorial shows the default shortcut keys for switching states and toggling all joints.
  • Space ends your turn and runs the simulation.
  • Camera: Rotate and zoom around the fighters to check angles before committing.
  • Replays: Saved automatically after matches. Version 5.76 added a button to reveal the replay file location.

Key bindings have changed over the years and can be customized, so the in-game tutorial and options are the most reliable reference for your version.

Match structure

  • A match has a set number of match frames, split into turns of a set number of frames. Both are set by the mod or room.
  • Winning: Most rooms score by damage dealt (hitting the opponent hard with fast-moving parts). Many mods also use disqualification (DQ): touching the ground with anything other than hands and feet loses.
  • Dismemberment and fractures exist in many mods. Hard enough hits can break joints off, which can also help you win on points.

Your First Moves

Beginner opener ideas

  • Stable stance: Set the knees and hips to hold, contract the abs slightly to keep your balance, and keep the hands ready to grab.
  • Kick: Extend one hip forward and extend that knee, keep the standing leg on hold, and lean the chest to keep balance.
  • Punch: Raise the shoulder, extend the elbow toward the target, and rotate the chest into it for speed.
  • Grab-and-throw (Judo-style): Get both hands onto the opponent and grab, then rotate the chest and lumbar while pulling with the shoulders and elbows.

Building a move step by step

  • Turn 1: Set your base. Keep your balance, prepare your weight shift, and don't overcommit.
  • Turn 2 to 3: Start the strike or grab. Use the ghost to line it up with the opponent's likely position.
  • Mid-match: React. Watch what their body is doing and change joints each turn. A frozen plan loses.
  • Finish: Spin or pull for damage. Momentum from the whole body hits harder than a single limb.

Tip: Toribash rewards speed over contact. A fast-moving foot does much more damage than a slow push.

Saving and reusing moves (MoveMemory)

The client includes MoveMemory, a tool for recording a sequence of joint states and replaying it on later turns or in later matches. It is the practical way to build the opener library recommended below: record an opener once, test it against a few different opponent reactions, then keep only the versions that land. Nabi fixed several MoveMemory bugs in 5.75 (steps being skipped when the same move ran for multiple players at once, and tooltips staying open), so update the client if a saved move behaves oddly.

Practising without pressure

  • Single-player / free play: Load a mod offline and fight a passive dummy to test openers, balance, and grab timing with no clock.
  • Blind Fight: A dedicated client mode that counts toward Battle Pass XP and, since 5.74 (30 April 2025), also rewards Qi. Since 5.76 it has a skip button to jump straight to total results.
  • Replays: Load a saved replay and step through it frame by frame. You can also take over a replay at any point and try a different move from the same position, which is the fastest way to fix a move that "almost" works.

Mods and Rooms

A mod sets the physics, arena, body rules, and DQ settings. Popular types of rooms:

Mod type | What it is | Good for

Aikido / dojo mods | Classic stand-up with DQ and a ring | Learning fundamentals

Judo | Grabs and throws | Learning grab mechanics

Parkour / single-player | Movement challenges, no opponent | Learning body control

Custom and fun mods | Everything from weapons to strange arenas | Variety

Toribash's built-in Mod Maker lets you create environments and rules. Version 5.76 added a button to revert a mod to its default.

Ranked Play (Ranking System Update, October 2025)

Nabi overhauled ranking to give every player a designated rank again and to turn the most popular rooms into ranked rooms.

  • Qualification: Your first 10 ranked games are unranked. After that you're placed by Elo according to how you played.
  • Seasons: The global ranking resets quarterly (every three months). There are preliminary rewards after the first and second months and end-of-season rewards.
  • Mod rankings never reset. They're permanent per mod.

Tier | Elo

Elo Hell | 0 to 1560

Bronze | 1560 to 1600

Silver | 1600 to 1635

Gold | 1635 to 1665

Platinum | 1665 to 1690

Diamond | 1690+

Each tier also comes with a dynamic profile backdrop. Top players earn Toricredits and Shiai Tokens. Preliminary rewards (paid after months one and two of each season) at launch of the system were:

Global rank | Preliminary reward

#1 | 100,000 Toricredits + 10 Shiai Tokens

#2 | 50,000 Toricredits + 8 Shiai Tokens

#3 | 35,000 Toricredits + 6 Shiai Tokens

#4 and below | Smaller tiered rewards (see the announcement)

Reward tables can be revised between seasons, so check the latest ranking post before grinding for a specific placement.

Ranked tips

  • Play one mod in ranked until you've got consistent openers.
  • Learn the common openers in that mod and prepare counters.
  • Save replays of losses and study where your balance broke.

Qi, Belts, and Progression

  • Qi grows as you play online (and Blind Fight rewards include Qi since the April 2025 update, v5.74).
  • Belts show your total Qi, starting at White and progressing through colored belts to Black and beyond. They show experience, not skill.
  • Battle Pass XP comes from multiplayer, Blind Fight, tournaments, events, and quests.

Battle Pass, Economy, and Customization

Battle Pass

  • Free and Premium tracks. Premium is bought from the "Upgrade to Premium" button on the Battle Pass screen; Nabi's season posts describe it as giving 3x more Toricredits and 2x more Shiai Tokens than the free track, plus a limited-edition color. Rewards include Toricredits, Shiai Tokens, boosters, flames, colors, 3D items, and pass-exclusive items.
  • Tangerine season (from 4 October 2025): a new exclusive color, Tangerine (Premium), a 512x512 ground texture, the 13-piece Mummy 3D item set (Premium), and the Mummy profile background (Premium).
  • Upgrading mid-season automatically gives you the premium rewards for levels you've already claimed.
  • Rewind (since 5.76): Buying Premium lets you finish a season after it ends. Pick a past season as your active Rewind season and your XP applies to it too. All 2025 seasons were made available retroactively.

Earlier 2025 seasons included Rhythm (Spiked set, War Spirit flame), Mistral (Mistveil flame, Ember Fists, Tidebind, Zephyr Grips, Stonehold), and Cadet (texture trails pack, Neochrome Legs and Mask).

Currencies

Currency | Source | Use

Toricredits (TC) | Playing, events, quests, Battle Pass, selling items | Torishop items, market trades

Shiai Tokens (ST) | Purchase, events, Battle Pass, ranking rewards | Premium items

Qi | Playing | Belt progression

Customization

  • Colors, textures, flames, hairs, trails, and 3D items. Item effects (glows and similar) can be fused onto items. Since 5.75 you can swap a fused effect for another of the same type for free without purging the others.
  • Profile backgrounds (new in 5.76) come from events, Battle Pass Premium, and the Torishop.
  • Open market: Trade or gift items with other players.

Community: Clans, Tournaments, and Events

  • Clans compete in organized leagues. The official site lists Clan League 2026 as active.
  • Tournaments: The Event Squad runs daily knockout tournaments, and bigger events like Fighter's Arena carry currency and item prizes.
  • Forum and in-game events reward Toricredits, items, and Battle Pass XP.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving everything relaxed. You fall over. Use hold for stability.
  • Ignoring the ghost. It shows exactly what your body will do if uninterrupted.
  • Overcommitting on turn 1. A giant opener that fails leaves you on the floor and DQed.
  • Jumping between mods. Every mod plays differently. Pick one and learn it.
  • Only attacking. Defense (keeping balance, dodging a kick, breaking a grab) wins close matches.
  • Buying items expecting an advantage. Everything is cosmetic.

Advanced Tips

  • Momentum chains: Rotate from the ankles through the hips, lumbar, chest, and shoulders to maximize limb speed on impact.
  • Grab control: Grabbing the opponent and spinning is a huge damage source in many mods. Practice un-grabbing at the right time to throw.
  • Opener libraries: Keep saved openers per mod and pick based on the opponent's first turn.
  • Turn-length awareness: Short turns mean fine control. Long turns mean committing to bigger actions.
  • Replay study: Watch top players' replays frame by frame and copy their joint patterns.
  • Blind Fight is a low-pressure way to practice openers, and it now has a skip button to jump to total results (5.76).

FAQ

Is Toribash free? Yes. It's free-to-play on Steam, with optional purchases for cosmetics and Battle Pass Premium.

Is it pay-to-win? No. Purchases are cosmetic, such as colors, textures, 3D items, flames, and profile backgrounds.

How do I get ranked? Play 10 ranked games in public ranked lobbies. After those qualification games you're placed into a tier (Elo Hell to Diamond) by Elo. Global ranking resets every three months, and mod rankings are permanent.

What is Battle Pass Rewind? Since 5.76, owning Premium for a season lets you keep progressing it after it ends by setting it as your Rewind season. XP earned in the current season applies to it too.

What's the best mod for beginners? A standard dojo mod (Aikido-style) to learn balance and striking, then Judo to learn grabs.

Is Battle Pass Tangerine still the current season? It was the newest season in the official Steam posts we could check (4 October 2025). Seasons have historically rotated every one to two months, so look at the in-game Battle Pass screen or the Steam news page for the live season.

Does Toribash run on Mac and Linux? Yes. The Steam version supports macOS and Linux, and recent updates include macOS- and Linux-specific fixes.
