This guide takes a new captain from character creation to a working level 65 build and the endgame loop. It covers factions, careers, ship and gear progression, the currencies, reputations, events, and how to play free without wasting anything.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the "Rediscovered" update and Rediscovered Event (Sept 22 – Oct 22, 2026, PC). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick a faction for the story you want. Federation is the easiest start and has the most story. Klingon, Romulan, and Dominion (Jem'Hadar) characters are allied factions that can later fly many Federation ships. The TOS-era Starfleet start is how you become a Temporal Agent when that recruitment event runs.
- Career matters less than you think. Tactical, Engineering, and Science only change your captain abilities and ground kit. Any career can fly any ship. Tactical does the most damage and is the most forgiving choice.
- Play the episodes in order at first. The story arcs are the best leveling route, they give good mission-reward gear, and most of the voice-acted content is there.
- Level cap is 65. Past 65 you keep earning XP as Specialization points. The rank titles run from Cadet up to Fleet Admiral (Starfleet) or Dahar Master (Klingon).
- Claim your free Tier 6 ship at level 61. Reaching 61 gives you a Vice Admiral Starship Requisition token for a free T6 ship from your faction's selection. Take a cruiser or escort that fits the weapon type you plan to use.
- Refine Dilithium every day. Dilithium Ore turns into refined Dilithium, but only up to a daily cap. Refining every day is how free players eventually buy Zen and anything they want.
- Pick one energy type and stick with it. Phaser, disruptor, plasma, polaron, antiproton, and so on. Mixing types wastes your damage consoles and traits.
- Do the featured events. Events like Rediscovered give a free weapon pack, Dilithium, and upgrade or Specialization rewards for about 20 days of light play.
- Join a fleet early. Fleet holdings unlock strong gear, and many fleets give new members stuff for free.
- Don't spend real money until you've played a few weeks. The store is huge and a lot of it is cosmetic. You can decide much better once you know your playstyle.
Factions and Careers
Faction | Notes
Federation (Starfleet) | Default and easiest start. Largest ship roster, most episodes in the natural order.
Klingon Defense Force | Its own opening story arc. Battle cloaks on many ships, lots of melee on the ground.
Romulan Republic | Allies with either the Federation or the Klingons during the story. Singularity-core warbirds use a different power model.
Dominion (Jem'Hadar) | Starts at level 60 with its own opening arc, then allies with a main faction.
TOS / Discovery-era Starfleet | Themed Federation starts with a period tutorial. A TOS start is needed for the Temporal Agent event when it runs.
Careers:
- Tactical: damage buffs (Go for the Kill, Attack Pattern Expertise, Tactical Initiative). Best for new players.
- Engineering: tanking and power management (Miracle Worker, Rotate Shield Frequency, EPS Power Transfer).
- Science: control and exotic damage (Sensor Scan, Subspace Fracture, Photonic Fleet).
Species can be picked freely (Alien lets you design your own). Species traits are small next to gear and ship traits.
Core Systems
Space combat basics
- You have fore and aft weapon slots. Beam arrays hit in wide arcs, dual beam banks and cannons in narrow forward arcs, turrets and omni-beams in 360.
- Shields have four facings. Turn to put a fresh facing toward the enemy, and use Tactical Team (or its equivalent) to rebalance them.
- Power levels (Weapons, Shields, Engines, Auxiliary) scale almost everything. Energy-weapon builds want high Weapons power. Science or exotic builds want high Auxiliary.
- Bridge Officer (BOff) abilities are your hotbar. Seats are tied to a career (Tactical, Engineering, Science, Universal) and a rank (Ensign up to Commander). Specialist seats such as Pilot, Intelligence, Command, Temporal, and Miracle Worker also unlock specialist abilities.
- Keybinds: set up a "spacebar" macro or tray layout so you can fire your key abilities quickly. Many players bind all weapons to one key (by default, the spacebar fires all weapons).
Ground combat
Ground content shows up less often but some episodes and TFOs need it. Your kit (Tactical, Engineering, or Science) comes with kit modules. Keep your away team equipped with the best weapons you've found, and set BOff ground abilities to auto-use.
Leveling and ranks
Level | Starfleet rank | Klingon rank | Romulan rank
10 | Lieutenant Commander | Lieutenant Commander | Centurion
20 | Commander | Commander | Subcommander
30 | Captain | Captain | Commander
40 | Rear Admiral, Lower Half | Brigadier General | Subadmiral I
50 | Vice Admiral | Lieutenant General | Vice Admiral
60 | Fleet Admiral | Dahar Master | Fleet Admiral
61 | Free Tier 6 ship token | |
65 | Level cap | |
Levels 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 each give a free ship token at the matching tier, along with more trait slots and BOff progression. Level 61 gives the Vice Admiral Starship Requisition token for a free Tier 6 ship. The Endeavor system unlocks at level 60.
Specializations
Specializations unlock at level 51, and you keep earning Specialization points past 65. Each character has one primary and one secondary specialization:
Specialization | Type | What it does
Intelligence | Primary | Crits, debuffs, damage
Command | Primary | Team buffs, threat control
Pilot | Primary | Mobility, flanking damage
Temporal | Primary | Damage over time, exotic
Miracle Worker | Primary | Heals and damage from Engineering abilities
Strategist | Secondary | Alternates between damage and survivability
Commando | Secondary | Ground focus
Constable | Secondary | Ground focus
For most space builds, a good default is Intelligence or Miracle Worker primary with Strategist secondary. Pilot is excellent if you fly a Pilot-seat ship (such as the new Constitution Pilot Multi-Mission Cruiser, which has a Commander Engineering/Pilot seat).
Duty Officers and the Admiralty
- Duty Officers (DOffs) are passive crew slots with bonuses, such as extra shield heals or reduced cooldowns. Assignments earn XP, items, and resources.
- Admiralty lets you send your other ship cards on timed missions for Dilithium, Lobi, reputation marks, and more. Check it at every login.
Currencies — What to Spend Them On
Currency | How you get it | Best use
Energy Credits (EC) | Loot, selling, missions | Exchange (player market) purchases, upgrade materials
Dilithium Ore / Refined Dilithium | TFOs, events, Admiralty, reputations | Converting to Zen on the Dilithium Exchange; reputation and fleet gear
Zen | Real money or Dilithium conversion | Ships, Specialization unlocks, account unlocks
Lobi | Lockboxes, Admiralty, events | Lobi Store ship traits and consoles
Reputation Marks | Reputation-tied TFOs | Reputation projects and gear
Fleet Credits and Fleet Marks | Fleet projects, TFOs | Fleet ships and gear
Refined Dilithium has a daily refining cap. Unrefined ore piles up, so refine every day and don't let ore sit unused. The ore/Zen exchange rate moves with player trading. Check the Dilithium Exchange before you convert.
Free-to-play spending priority (Zen, whether bought or converted)
- Account and character slots and bank space only if you actually play alts.
- One good ship with a useful trait for your build, rather than several mediocre ones. Use the in-game Ship Info tooltips and the STO wiki to check traits.
- Upgrade materials (Enhanced or Superior Universal Tech Upgrades) only after your gear set is final.
Avoid buying lockbox keys "for the ship". Random boxes are a poor way to get a specific item. Buying the ship from the Exchange for EC is almost always cheaper.
Reputations
Reputations are long-term tracks. You complete projects using marks and EC, and the rewards are space and ground set gear, traits, and consoles. Early on, focus on the ones that give traits you'll use.
- Omega Force and Nukara Strikeforce: early traits, reliable sets.
- Iconian Resistance and Temporal Defense Initiative: strong universal gear and space traits.
- Terran Task Force, Discovery Legends, and Lukari Restoration Initiative: widely used console and weapon sets.
Slot a project every day in each reputation you're leveling, even if you aren't playing its TFOs yet. Many projects only need time, EC, and marks you'll earn from random TFO queues.
Gear Progression
- Leveling (1–50): use mission reward gear. Replace weapons from drops when the Mark goes up.
- Early 60s: set up a consistent weapon type, such as all phaser beam arrays, plus a matching torpedo if you want one.
- At 65: reputation and mission sets are your best free upgrades. Mission reward sets you can replay are a solid baseline.
- Rarity and Mark: gear goes from Common up to Epic and from Mk I up to Mk XV. Upgrades at an R&D station raise the Mark and can reroll quality. Don't upgrade until the item is one you'll keep.
- R&D (Research and Development): level each school with materials. Crafted gear with good modifiers competes with many drops.
Beginner build archetypes
Archetype | Core idea | Common ingredients
Beam Fire-at-Will cruiser | All beam arrays, broadside the target | Beam Array: Fire at Will, Emergency Power to Weapons, Tactical Team
Cannon escort | Nose-on dual cannons and turrets | Cannon: Scatter Volley or Rapid Fire, Attack Pattern Beta
Torpedo boat | High-yield torpedoes plus torpedo spread | Torpedo: High Yield, Kinetic consoles, torpedo traits
Exotic (EPG) science | Auxiliary-driven abilities do the damage | Gravity Well, Tyken's Rift, Exotic Particle Generator consoles
Pick the archetype that matches the free T6 ship you claim. Cruisers suit Fire at Will, escorts suit cannons, and science vessels suit exotic builds.
Endgame Loop
- Daily Rewards and events: featured events like the current Rediscovered Event (Sept 22 – Oct 22, 2026 on PC). It needs 20 days of daily progress: 3 points per day from the new episode City at the Edge of Never, The Kuvah'Magh, the new TFO Know Thy Enemy, or three Deep Space Encounters. Completing it gives the Anti-Gorn Weapons Pack (Neo Cryonic Torpedo and Neo Cryonic Omni Array), 25,000 Dilithium Ore, and three Featured TFO rewards (Enhanced Universal Tech Upgrade or a Specialization Point each). Daily progress is account-wide and limited to one per day.
- Random TFO queues for bonus marks. Elite TFOs pay more but expect a finished build.
- Endeavors (unlocked at 60): daily and weekly tasks that grant small permanent account-wide bonuses.
- Admiralty and DOff assignments.
- Fleet projects for Fleet Marks and fleet gear.
Recent event pattern worth knowing: events like Flagship Celebration (Aug–Sept 2026, which included Battle of Korfez on Elite for the first time) and Demon Hunting (August 2026) come back or get replaced regularly. The rewards (free ships, universal kit modules, vanity sets) are often account-wide, so completing them on one character pays off for everyone.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mixing energy types. Two phaser and two disruptor beams means half your consoles and traits do nothing.
- Leaving ore unrefined. The refine cap is daily, and a missed day can't be made up.
- Upgrading throwaway gear. Upgrade materials are expensive. Only upgrade your final set.
- Buying lockbox keys for one ship. Check the Exchange price in EC first.
- Running low Weapons power on an energy build. Set a power preset and check it after every respec.
- Joining Elite queues too early. Failed Elite runs cost everyone time. Start on Advanced when your build can't carry.
- Skipping BOff training. Unassigned abilities and empty seats are free performance left on the table.
Advanced Tips
- Weapons power and "Emergency Power to" abilities stack with your warp core and consoles. Your firing cycle should keep Weapons power near the cap.
- Use Tactical Team or your shield-balancing ability on a macro so it fires off cooldown.
- Duty officer cooldown reducers (such as the conn officers that cut Tactical ability cooldowns) are how a lot of builds keep key abilities up all the time.
- Read ship traits before buying. Many ships are worth it for a single starship trait you can slot on any other ship after you unlock it.
- Pilot seats: Pilot abilities give burst mobility and flanking bonuses. The Constitution Pilot Multi-Mission Cruiser (released Sept 22, 2026) is a Pilot-seat ship with a trait that improves performance against Dreadnoughts and a console that creates localized nebulas.
- Buy EC items on the Exchange in off-peak hours and sell event items when the event ends and demand peaks.
- Chain the event with dailies. Doing the event episode or TFO also covers random queue bonuses and Endeavors, so you complete several tracks in one run.
FAQ
Is Star Trek Online still active in 2026? Yes. It's still getting new episodes, TFOs, events, and ships. The latest update is "Rediscovered" (Sept 22, 2026, PC), which brings in Spock storylines and the new City at the Edge of Never episode. Arc Games publishes it. On November 26, 2025 it was announced that Arc Games and Cryptic Studios would be divested from Embracer in a management buyout (Project Golden Arc, backed by XD Inc.).
What's the max level? 65, followed by Specialization points and Endeavors.
Can I play completely free? Yes. The whole leveling story and all core systems are free. Dilithium can be converted to Zen, so over time you can buy store ships and unlocks without spending money.
Which faction should I start with? Federation, for the most natural story flow and ship choice. Make a second character in another faction later for its opening arc.
Beams or cannons? Beams (especially Fire at Will on a cruiser) are the easiest to fly and keep on target. Cannons do strong damage but need you to stay nose-on to the target, which is better on agile escorts.
How do I get a Tier 6 ship for free? Reach level 61 and use the Vice Admiral Starship Requisition token. Events and campaign rewards sometimes give ships too.
What happens if I miss a day during an event? You need 20 days of daily progress within the event window. Rediscovered runs about a month, so you have some spare days. You can still only earn one Daily Progress per day across your whole account.
