The Series at a Glance
Poppy Playtime (Mob Entertainment) is a first-person horror puzzle game set in the abandoned Playtime Co. toy factory. You're a former employee who returns years after the staff vanished. Chapter 1 is the free base game on Steam; every later chapter is paid DLC.

Quick Start
- Chapter 1 is free — play it first. It's short (an hour or two) and sets up everything.
- Look for hand scanners. Colored hand-print panels open doors and need the matching GrabPack hand.
- Follow the wires. Many puzzles involve pulling a power cable from a source to a socket, sometimes around corners and across rooms.
- Watch for the next hand. Each chapter gives you new GrabPack abilities; most puzzles in that chapter are about learning them.
- During chases, don't stop. Chase sequences are scripted and linear. Look for the path ahead, which is usually lit or marked.
- Find the VHS tapes. They're the main lore collectibles and explain what happened at Playtime Co.
- Save points are automatic. Checkpoints are generous; dying just resets the current section.
- Play with headphones. Audio cues warn you when a monster is close.
Controls (PC defaults)
Action | Key
Move | W A S D
Jump | Space
Fire left / right GrabPack hand | Mouse1 / Mouse2
Other bindings (interact, crouch, switching hands, inventory) change between chapters as new hands and tools are added. Check the controls page in each chapter's settings, and rebind hand-switching to something comfortable before Chapter 3.
The GrabPack
The GrabPack is a backpack with two extendable hands on steel wires. Core uses:
- Grab handles, levers and objects at a distance.
- Pull objects toward you or swing doors open.
- Carry electricity from a power source to a receiver. The wire has a maximum length; if a puzzle seems impossible, look for a closer source or a relay.
- Scan hands on colored scanners to open doors.
Later chapters build on this: swinging across gaps, jumping higher with the purple hand, firing flares at enemies and in the dark, and storing charge in the green hand.
Chapter Walkthrough Outlines
Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze
You arrive at the factory lobby, where the giant blue mascot Huggy Wuggy stands in the entrance hall. After you get the GrabPack and start restoring power, Huggy is gone. The chapter builds to a long vent chase, and ends with you finding Poppy, the doll locked in a case.
Tips:
- Solve the power puzzles by tracing wires from socket to socket.
- In the vent chase, keep moving forward and don't turn around. The route is fixed.
- A good first-time run takes an hour or two.
Chapter 2: Fly in a Web
Poppy asks for your help getting out of the factory by train. Mommy Long Legs controls the Game Station and forces you to play its games to earn the parts you need. Each game has its own toy and puzzle:
- Musical Memory — repeat sequences (with Bunzo Bunny).
- Wack-a-Wuggy — hit Huggy targets under pressure (with PJ Pug-a-Pillar).
- Statues — freeze when told, with Mini Huggies.
Mommy Long Legs chases you after the games, and the chapter ends on the train.
Tips:
- The green hand carries a charge. Use it to move power from one socket to another, which is the basis of most puzzles in this chapter.
- In the Game Station games, a failed attempt usually just resets that game. Learn the pattern, then commit.
- The chapter is longer than Chapter 1.
Chapter 3: Deep Sleep
The chapter moves to Playcare, the orphanage below the factory, and introduces the Smiling Critters toy line. CatNap hunts you through the red "Poppy Gas" that he uses. You meet Miss Delight in the school area and DogDay, one of the Smiling Critters, who warns you about CatNap.
Tips:
- The gas mask protects you from the red smoke. Watch for areas where you need it.
- The purple hand lets you jump higher; the flare hand fires flares to light dark areas and deal with some threats.
- It's a much longer chapter than the first two, with more exploration.
Chapter 4: Safe Haven
You go even deeper, meeting surviving toys and facing threats like Yarnaby and Doey the Doughman before confronting The Doctor (Dr. Harley Sawyer). The Omni-Hand opens high-security doors but has limited uses, so read the level before spending one.
Tips:
- Don't waste Omni-Hand uses; the game signals where they're needed.
- The chapter mixes stealth, chases and bigger puzzles.
Chapter 5: Broken Things
The Prototype's domain. Levels include Harvesting Processing Center 04, Recycling & Reclamation, Research & Development, TESTING, Extreme Aggression Under Stress, Sweet Street and The Dollhouse. Huggy Wuggy returns, and The Prototype is revealed in full. The Pressure Hand and Conductive Hand drive most puzzles.
Tips:
- Several softlock bugs were fixed in Patches 2-5 (for example the Big Battery getting stuck in the TESTING Power Room and a softlock in The Dollhouse). Update the game before playing.
- Patch 5 fixed several Huggy Wuggy chase bugs in Harvesting Processing Center 04. If a chase feels broken, restart from checkpoint.
- The Golden Chum Trophy shows up as an inventory item; look out for trophies and tapes throughout.
Collectibles
- VHS tapes — every chapter has them. They explain the experiments and the history of Playtime Co. Some unlock achievements.
- Documents and posters — extra lore scattered around.
- Hidden secrets — chapters include easter eggs and hidden rooms; the in-chapter menu or inventory usually tracks tapes found.
If you want 100%, pause often to check corners. Many tapes are in side rooms off the main path.
Chase and Puzzle Tips
- Chases are about route, not speed. They're built so that sprinting forward works; stopping or backtracking is what kills you.
- Look up. A lot of GrabPack puzzles involve handles high on walls or ceilings.
- Think about wire length. If a wire won't reach, you probably need a relay or a different power source.
- Stuck? Retrace. Most puzzles in each room use only the objects in that room.
- Read the environment. Posters, signs and tape recordings often hint at puzzle solutions and codes.
Performance and Fixes
Chapter 5 runs on Unreal Engine 5.6, and early patches fixed start-up crashes tied to DirectX 12 clock calibration and specific drivers. If you have problems:
- Update your GPU drivers and the game.
- Lower settings. Patch 5 improved visuals on Low settings.
- If you get a softlock, reload the latest checkpoint.
- A bug where too many save files caused softlocks was fixed in Patch 3.
What's Next: Escape From Playtime and Project: Playtime
- Escape From Playtime — a new multiplayer game from Mob Entertainment, announced August 26, 2026. It launches in Steam Early Access on October 21, 2026, with an open beta starting October 1 (sign-up through FirstLook).
- Project: Playtime — the free-to-play asymmetrical multiplayer spin-off (Early Access since December 2022) is winding down, with support ending in late 2026.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping Chapter 1. It's free and sets up the whole story.
- Playing Chapter 5 unpatched. Several softlocks were fixed after launch.
- Stopping mid-chase to look back. Keep going.
- Missing VHS tapes. They're much of the story.
- Forcing puzzles. If nothing works, look for another power source, a handle, or a scanner you haven't used.
Advanced Tips
- Replay chapters to find tapes you missed; each chapter can be restarted from the main menu.
- Speedrunning is popular for Chapter 1; it's short and its routes are well documented by the community.
- Pay attention to the phone calls and voice lines. They tell you who is manipulating you.
- Use headphones for directional audio cues during stealth sections.
