This guide covers People Playground (PPG): the sandbox's physics, biology, temperature, and electricity systems, how to build working contraptions, the most important tools and items, and how to stay safe with mods after the 2026 Workshop malware incidents.
Researched September 2026. Current as of version 1.27.x (after the February 2026 1.27.7 security update) and the September 21–24, 2026 Workshop incident. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Security notice (September 2026): A self-spreading malicious mod hit the People Playground Workshop between September 21 and 24, 2026. It hid inside popular mods, auto-updated onto players' PCs, deleted personal files, vandalised Steam data, and published sensitive info (including possibly usable account data) to the Workshop. If you played with mods during that window: change your Steam password, turn on Steam Guard two-factor, check your account for unauthorised purchases or trades, check your email for a message from Steam, run an updated antivirus scan, and change your Discord and other important passwords. The developer says the game itself is safe to play. Valve removed all Workshop items containing C# code or sensitive data, plus everything uploaded or updated since September 21. C# mods will no longer be officially supported or hosted on the Workshop. A safer scripting system is planned. The Workshop "is likely to return," but no date had been given as of this writing. An earlier, smaller incident in February 2026 led to update 1.27.7 (mods no longer auto-update and need manual approval when changed).
Quick Start
- Spawn from the left panel, drag with the mouse. Categories cover humans, weapons, explosives, machinery, vehicles, biohazards, and more. Click to select, drag to throw.
- Right-click objects for context actions. Most items have options (activate, toggle, fire, set values). Many interactions are in these menus.
- Use the Wiring and Joint tools. Connecting objects together is how you build machines. Fixed joints glue things, hinges rotate, springs bounce, and wires carry electricity.
- Pause and slow motion. Time scale controls let you set up a scene and then watch it play out slowly. This is essential for building and for watching reactions.
- Save contraptions. Anything you build can be saved as a contraption and reloaded later (or shared, once Workshop sharing is back).
- Try each map. Maps change gravity, space, and set pieces. Reactor A5 was added in 1.27.
- Ragdolls have full biology. Blood, organs, temperature, and brain function are simulated. Ragdolls react realistically to pain, bleeding, suffocation, and burns, and can be treated.
- Snap and grid settings help builders. 1.27 added grid and angle snap size settings with keybinds. Turn them on for tidy builds.
- Be careful with mods. See the security notice above before loading anything.
Core Systems
Physical Properties
Every object has its own values for weight, sharpness, heat conduction and capacity, electrical conductivity, ferromagnetism (for magnets), and bullet resistance. The game simulates:
- Rigid-body physics: collisions, momentum, and joints.
- Temperature: heat moves through objects and through the air. Things burn, melt, freeze, or boil.
- Electricity: conductive objects carry current, which powers machines and shocks ragdolls.
Combining these systems produces behavior no one programmed directly. That emergent behavior is the whole point.
Ragdoll Biology
Humans (and other ragdolls) are "simple on the outside, detailed on the inside":
- Blood: every limb bleeds. Enough blood loss causes unconsciousness and death. You can drain and replace blood (even with other liquids).
- Organs and bones: impacts break bones, cut skin, and damage organs. Heads and hearts matter most.
- Brain and breathing: holding someone's head underwater causes asphyxiation damage.
- Temperature: burns and hypothermia are separate effects.
- Recovery: with medical tools you can stabilise and even revive ragdolls. 1.27 made organisms able to fully restore their blood levels on their own.
Liquids and Syringes
Syringes and containers hold liquids that affect ragdolls when injected: healing, pain relief, adrenaline, and more dramatic effects. Blood can be siphoned and replaced. The game also lets you replace blood with dangerous substances like nitroglycerine, if that's what you're after.
Tools and Building
Tool | What it does | Use it for
Fixed joint | Welds two objects together | Frames, weapons on vehicles
Hinge | Rotating joint | Wheels, arms, doors
Spring | Elastic joint | Suspension, launchers
Rope / Chain | Flexible connection | Hanging objects, cranes
Wire | Electrical connection | Powering machines, triggers
Adhesive coupler / Decoupler | Stick or detach on command | Stage separation, droppers
Pointer / Counter (added 1.27) | Newer machinery parts. Check each item's in-game description | Indicators and logic-style builds
Contraption Basics
- Start with a frame. Metal plates or rods joined with fixed joints make a stable base.
- Wheels on hinges plus a motor or thruster make a vehicle.
- Power with batteries and wires. Add switches and buttons for control.
- Use activation signals. Many machine parts react to activation (buttons, sensors, timed gates). Chain them to make automation.
- Test at slow time scale. Weak joints and misaligned parts show up clearly when slowed down.
Useful Building Blocks
Part | What it does
Thrusters and rockets | Propulsion
Pistons and motors | Linear and rotary motion
Magnets (with ferromagnetic items) | Grabbing and holding
Timed gates and metronomes | Timing
Lagbox and sensors | Detection and delays
Lights and lasers | Signals and weapons
Shields and armor plating | Protection
Weapons and Destruction
- Firearms fire real bullets with penetration, bullet holes that bruise over time, casings, and (since 1.27) bullet cracks and whizzes.
- Melee weapons (swords, knives, blunt objects) cut and bruise. Blunt impacts can split skin open and make blood spray.
- Explosives include grenades (the hand grenade now loses its pin and lever when armed), dynamite, the naval mine, and more. Fragmentation explosions crush objects more realistically since 1.27.
- Energy weapons such as the energy sword and lasers burn and cut.
- Excalibur was added in 1.27 patch 4.
- Missile launcher: its missile explodes when shot with a large enough round, and it can be muted from the context menu.
Maps
The game ships with multiple maps, including space and environment variants and Reactor A5 (added 1.27). Pick a map for its space and features. Big open maps are good for vehicles, and smaller ones are good for scenes and experiments.
Performance and Settings
- Physics iterations: 1.27 raised the default to 32 (range 8–256). Higher is more accurate but slower. Lower it if big contraptions lag.
- Delete debris when you're done with a scene. Gibs, casings, and particles pile up.
- Big contraptions and many ragdolls are what usually lag. Save and clear often.
- Camera problems: the 1.27 notes said to uninstall the Cloddymod mod if your camera misbehaves. Mods are a common cause of weird bugs in general.
Modding After the 2026 Incidents
What Changed
- February 2026: a malicious mod spread by overwriting players' uploads. The developer disabled the Workshop, patched the mod loader, and reopened it with 1.27.7. Mods no longer auto-update and need manual approval when their contents change.
- September 21–24, 2026: a much worse piece of malware spread through popular mods. Valve deleted all Workshop items containing C# code or sensitive data, and everything uploaded or updated since September 21. C# mods will no longer be supported or hosted on the Workshop. The developer plans a safer scripting replacement.
Why It Happened
PPG mods were C# source code that the game compiled on launch. True sandboxing of that code in Unity isn't possible without native isolation. The game's internal checks for suspicious mods failed, so a mod could run arbitrary code on your PC.
Safe-Modding Checklist
- Keep the game updated. Verify game files after any security news.
- Only enable mods you trust. Prefer well-known authors, and read recent comments.
- Never approve an update you didn't expect. The approval prompt is there for a reason.
- If in doubt, delete your mods folder and the Workshop content folder (Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1118200) and resubscribe carefully later.
- Use Steam Guard and a strong password.
- Watch official announcements on the Steam news page before reinstalling mods after an incident.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running untrusted mods without thinking. Mods could run arbitrary code. Take this seriously.
- Building without joints. Stacked objects slide apart. Use fixed joints.
- Leaving time at full speed while building. Pause, build, then play.
- Too many physics objects at once. Clear gibs and old scenes.
- Using non-conductive parts for circuits. Wires and conductive materials are required for electricity.
- Forgetting to save contraptions before testing destructive setups.
Advanced Tips
- Phase-linked objects don't collide with each other. They're great for complex machinery with overlapping parts. (Adhesive couplers no longer stick to phase-linked objects as of 1.27 patch 4.)
- Try the 1.27 machinery parts (counter, pointer, decoupler, adhesive coupler) in logic and staging builds. Read each item's description in the spawn menu for the exact behavior.
- Heat as a weapon: heat plates or fire can cook ragdolls slowly, and temperature spreads through metal.
- Medical challenges: try keeping a ragdoll alive through heavy injury with blood transfusions, an ECG, and life support. It's a fun, different way to play.
- Grid and angle snap make symmetric builds much easier.
- Select small objects inside others: 1.27 prioritises the smallest object under the cursor, which helps with detailed work.
FAQ
Is People Playground safe to play right now? According to the developer's September 24, 2026 recap, the game itself is safe to play. Follow the checklist above if you used mods on September 21–24.
Is the Steam Workshop back? As of the September 24, 2026 recap, the developer said "The Workshop is likely to return. I don't know exactly when or in what state." When it does, C# mods won't be hosted. The planned replacement is an isolated scripting system not based on C# (Lua was named the leading candidate, JavaScript an alternative). Contraptions weren't targeted by the change, though Valve may have deleted some during the cleanup.
What version is People Playground on? The game has been on the 1.27 line (1.27.7 in February 2026, with security patches after that). Check the Steam news feed for the latest build.
Can I revive a dead ragdoll? Sometimes. It depends on how much damage they took. Medical tools like the ECG, blood supply, and healing syringes can bring them back if the brain and heart aren't destroyed.
How do I make a car? Frame, wheels on hinges, a motor or thruster, a battery with wires, and a switch. Test at slow time scale.
Why is my game lagging? Too many objects or ragdolls, or too many physics iterations. Delete debris and lower iterations.
