How to go from a fresh level 0 heister to running Death Sentence: skills, perk decks, stealth fundamentals, loud survival, money and XP, and what changed in PAYDAY 2's 2026 updates.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 248.2 (September 2026), after the 64-bit / DirectX 11 engine upgrade and the Under the Hammer heist. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Play low difficulties first. Normal and Hard are for learning maps. Once you have a real build, Very Hard and Overkill pay much better per minute.
- Your first 100 levels come fast. Take anything loud and short (Jewelry Store, Four Stores, Mallcrasher, Bank Heist) for early XP. Don't agonize over skills yet.
- Pick a perk deck early and finish it. Perk decks give big passive bonuses once all nine cards are unlocked. Completing one deck before switching is much stronger than half-finishing several.
- Learn stealth on a few maps. Shadow Raid, Car Shop, Framing Frame, Big Bank and Golden Grin Casino are classic stealth heists with a good payout.
- Pagers: four per heist, max. Each guard you kill in stealth triggers a pager that someone must answer. After the fourth, the next one sounds the alarm.
- Bag everything. Heist loot you carry to the escape is what pays. Extra loose loot adds more.
- Keep your Offshore Account in mind. Most of every payout goes to the Offshore Account; only spending cash buys skills, weapons and mods.
- Shout at civilians and mark specials. Interact/shout (F by default) makes civilians get down, cuffs them, and marks special enemies for your team.
- Get a medic bag or first aid kits in loud. A deployable is the difference between a success and a restart.
- Update your mods. The August 2026 engine upgrade (64-bit, DirectX 11) changed how the game runs, and older mods and mod loaders may need updates.
What's New in 2026
2026 was OVERKILL's first full year of updates focused on the engine and quality of life, not just new DLC:
- Update 242.1 (January): Better memory handling for max texture quality, borderless windowed mode, D3D9 fixes.
- Update 246 (May): Free PUBG Weapons Pack with the Frying Pan melee and the Flare Gun.
- Engine Upgrade (June open beta, shipped in Update 247 in August): The game is now 64-bit with a DirectX 11 renderer (up from DirectX 9), better CPU utilization, a smaller install (roughly 32 GB), faster loads on SSDs, and 6-character lobby codes. Native Linux support was retired — Linux and Steam Deck players now run the Windows build through Proton.
- Updates 248.1 and 248.2 (September): Fixes for stuttering and freezing caused by garbage collection after the engine upgrade, plus level fixes for Under the Hammer.
- Under the Hammer (September 15, 2026, paid DLC): A new heist contracted by Bain, set at the Palisandro Dimora auction house, hunting for clues to Phineas Pelton's lost fortune. The pack includes the Karussell Revolving Shotgun, the Last Call melee, two new masks (Comedy and Tragedy), and a free Vintage Sight mod unlocked through the heist's achievements. The story is a prequel set before the White House heist. Sidetrack Games is credited on the release.
If the game stutters after updating, make sure you're on the latest 248.x build before troubleshooting further.
Difficulties
Difficulty | Notes
Normal / Hard | Learning maps and objectives. Low payouts.
Very Hard / Overkill | Good XP and money per minute once you have a build.
Mayhem | Tougher enemies, higher payout. Good step up.
Death Wish | Serious damage and heavy special spawns.
Death Sentence | The hardest difficulty. Build-dependent.
One Down (modifier) | Stacks on any difficulty. You go straight to custody on your second down, but you earn bonus rewards.
Heist length, stealth vs loud, and the difficulty multiplier all affect your payout. Contract heat and Crime.net events can add bonuses.
Skills
You have five skill trees, each with three subtrees. Skill points are earned as you level; you can hold multiple skill profiles for different builds.
Tree | Subtrees | What it's for
Mastermind | Medic, Controller, Sharpshooter | Healing and reviving, civilian control, rifle damage
Enforcer | Shotgunner, Tank, Ammo Specialist | Shotgun builds, armor, extra ammo
Technician | Engineer, Breacher, Oppressor | Turrets, drills and C4, heavy weapon builds
Ghost | Shinobi, Artful Dodger, Silent Killer | Stealth, dodge, suppressed weapons
Fugitive | Gunslinger, Revenant, Brawler | Pistols, bleeding-out skills, melee
Early skill priorities for new players:
- Inspire (Mastermind) – revive teammates from a distance by shouting at them. One of the most valuable skills in loud.
- Combat Medic and Painkillers (Mastermind) – make reviving safer.
- Stockholm Syndrome (Mastermind) – civilians can revive you or be traded.
- Shinobi/Silent Killer basics (Ghost) – faster stealth interactions, pick locks, cameras.
- Iron Man (Enforcer) – armor boost for heavy armor builds.
- Hardware Expert / Drill Sawgeant (Technician) – faster, more reliable drills.
A "universal" loud build usually takes Inspire, weapon-class damage skills for your main gun, and a survival path (armor, dodge, or health).
Perk Decks
Each perk deck has nine cards. Card 1 plus the odd-numbered cards are unique to the deck; the even-numbered cards are shared bonuses (extra health, armor, detection, and more XP).
Deck | Playstyle | Why pick it
Crew Chief | Team support | Beginner-friendly buffs for the whole crew
Muscle | Health tank | Lots of HP, simple
Armorer | Armor tank | Big armor bonus and a brief invulnerability when armor breaks
Burglar | Stealth | Faster stealth interactions
Grinder | Health regen on hit | Great with fast-firing weapons and light armor
Anarchist | Armor regen over time | Very strong with heavy armor and high-damage weapons
Stoic | Damage over time, flask | Converts damage to delayed damage you can cancel with a flask
Hacker | Pocket ECM | Heals, damage, and crowd control; excellent for both stealth and loud
Kingpin | Injector | Massive short-term damage mitigation and healing
Leech | Ampule | Health segments and team support
Copycat | Mix and match | Lets you combine perks from other decks
Sicario | Smoke dodge | Dodge-focused, strong in the right build
Maniac / Tag Team / Biker / Hitman / Rogue / Crook / Infiltrator / Sociopath / Gambler / Yakuza / Ex-President | Various | Niche or team-dependent
For a first high-difficulty build, many players settle on Hacker, Stoic, Anarchist, Kingpin or Leech. Complete your deck before experimenting.
Stealth Fundamentals
- Detection risk is shown on the loadout screen. Lower is better. Lighter armor, suppressed weapons and low-concealment equipment reduce it.
- Cameras can be broken, looped with skills, or disabled by taking over the security room.
- Pagers: four guard kills can be answered per heist. Answer pagers quickly — if you wait too long, the alarm triggers.
- Civilians will call the police if they see you or a body. Tie them down with cable ties or kill them (costs money via civilian kill penalties).
- ECM Jammers stop pagers and cameras for a short time, and with the right skills can open some electronic locks. Hacker's Pocket ECM does similar work.
- Body bags let you move bodies out of sight.
- Guards patrol predictable routes. Watch before you move, especially on Framing Frame, Big Bank and Shadow Raid.
If a heist goes loud, finish it loud. Most heists pay out either way, just with a lower stealth bonus.
Loud Fundamentals
- Specials to prioritize: Taser (locks you in place), Cloaker (kicks you down instantly), Bulldozer (heavy armor, aim for the visor then the face), Shield (flank or use armor-piercing weapons), Medic (heals nearby enemies — kill first), Sniper (marked with a laser).
- Captain Winters (appears on some heists) makes nearby enemies tougher. Push him out with sustained fire.
- Assault waves come in phases: control, anticipation, then assault. Use the break to heal, restock and move loot.
- Choke points: hold a room with one entrance. Don't split up.
- Deployables: medic bag, ammo bag, first aid kit, trip mine, sentry gun, ECM, body bag case. Bring at least one medic bag or FAK set per team.
- Hostages can be traded to rescue a teammate from custody.
Weapons and Armor
- Armor ranges from the Two-Piece Suit to the Improved Combined Tactical Vest (ICTV). Heavier armor protects more but moves slower and raises detection.
- Dodge builds use light armor and rely on dodge chance.
- Rule of thumb: every build needs one weapon for crowds (a fast-firing primary or shotgun) and one for specials (armor-piercing rifle, sniper or LMG).
- Weapon mods are unlocked through drops at the end of heists (card flips) and weapon skin boosts.
- New in 2026: the free Frying Pan and Flare Gun (PUBG pack), and the Karussell Revolving Shotgun and Last Call melee (Under the Hammer DLC).
Money, XP and Infamy
- XP: Longer and harder heists give more XP. Early on, short loud heists are fine. At higher levels, Overkill or higher difficulty loud runs are the standard grind.
- Money: Stealth runs with extra loot and big-bag heists (Shadow Raid, Big Bank, Golden Grin Casino) are reliable money makers.
- Offshore Account money isn't useless: it funds the Offshore Payday casino (a way to gamble for cards and cosmetics) and a few other sinks.
- Infamy: After level 100, you can go Infamous. You keep your perk deck progress, gain an XP bonus and unlock cosmetics. Infamy is optional but gives the XP boost.
- Continental Coins buy safehouse upgrades and custom weapon mods.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Switching perk decks before finishing one.
- Answering no pagers or too many. Four is the hard limit.
- Running around alone in loud. Cloakers and Tasers punish solo pushes.
- Ignoring Medics and Shields. They stretch assaults out much longer.
- Loading into Death Sentence with an unfinished build. It's a gear check.
- Using outdated mods after the engine upgrade. Update or disable them if you crash.
- Wasting money on every mod. Buy what you'll use; keep spending cash for skills.
Advanced Tips
- Hacker Pocket ECM is excellent in stealth for pagers and cameras, and in loud for healing and crowd control.
- Stoic + flask timing: cancel the damage over time before it stacks up.
- Kingpin injectors are best saved for big assault spikes and revives.
- Pre-planning (the planning screen on stealth heists) can buy you spycams, a zipline or extra escape options.
- One Down is worth it once your crew is reliable — the bonus is significant.
- Learn stealth spawns. Many heists randomize vault locations and guard routes; knowing the variants saves time.
- Custom safehouse upgrades give small boosts and cosmetic value.
FAQ
Is PAYDAY 2 still getting updates in 2026? Yes. 2026 brought a 64-bit / DirectX 11 engine upgrade (Update 247, August 2026), performance fixes (248.1 and 248.2) and a new paid heist, Under the Hammer (September 15, 2026).
What's the best perk deck for beginners? Crew Chief or Muscle for simplicity. For stronger all-round builds, Hacker, Stoic and Anarchist are popular.
How do I level up fast? Short loud heists early, then Very Hard/Overkill or higher loud runs. Going Infamous gives an XP bonus.
Do my mods still work after the engine upgrade? Not necessarily. The move to 64-bit and DirectX 11 changed a lot under the hood. Check each mod's page and update your mod loader.
Does PAYDAY 2 still run on Linux / Steam Deck? Native Linux support ended with Update 247. Use Proton (Steam Deck does this automatically).
How many pagers can I answer? Four per heist. The fifth guard kill that needs a pager will trigger the alarm.
What's in the Under the Hammer DLC? The auction-house heist, the Karussell Revolving Shotgun, the Last Call melee, the Comedy and Tragedy masks, and a free Vintage Sight mod earned via achievements.
