A strategy primer for Northgard: how the economy, happiness and winters actually work, a safe opening build, clan overviews for all 21 clans, victory paths, and the habits that win ranked and AI games alike.
Researched September 2026 — current as of v4.3.26.43334 (patch notes of August 27, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Scout first. Your opening Scout reveals neighbouring zones, their resources and threats. Knowing where food, stone and the good expansion tiles are decides the whole game.
- Winter is the clock. Every year has a winter that increases food consumption and wood use, and farms stop producing. Stockpile food and wood before the snow.
- Happiness keeps villagers working. Each new villager adds a bit of unhappiness; if happiness goes negative, production suffers. Feast, brewery and some buildings fix it.
- Expanding costs food and it gets pricier each time. Colonize only zones you'll actually use.
- Each zone has limited building slots. Plan: food zones, wood zones, and a "town center" zone.
- Upgrade buildings with stone once your economy is running; upgraded production buildings give more for the same workers.
- Build a Trading Post or warriors only when you need them. Early military is expensive upkeep; build defenses when a threat appears.
- Pick a victory path by mid-game (Fame, Lore, Trade or Conquest) and commit.
Resources
Resource | Main sources | Used for
Food | Hunters, fishermen, farms (not in winter), sheep | Population, colonizing, feasts
Wood | Woodcutters | Buildings, winter heating
Krowns | Trade, some clans' bonuses, Trading Post | Trade, mercenaries, upkeep, some upgrades
Stone | Stone deposits | Building upgrades, defensive structures
Iron | Iron deposits / mines | Advanced upgrades, weapons
Lore | Lore buildings and certain tiles | Researching the Lore tree, Lore victory
Happiness | Food variety, buildings, feasts | Keeps production up
Fame | Military achievements, events, buildings, clan bonuses | Unlocks clan bonuses, Fame victory
Key Buildings at a Glance
Building | Role | When to build
House | Raises population cap | Early, and again whenever you are near the cap
Woodcutter's Lodge | Wood | First building in almost every opening
Hunter's Lodge | Food from deer zones | Early, if you have a deer zone
Fisherman's Hut | Food on coastal tiles | Early on coasts; unlike fields, not shut down by winter
Field (farm) | Strong food, but stops in winter | Mid-game once you can buffer winter
Scout Camp | More scouts | Only if the map is large or unexplored
Brewery | Happiness | Before your population outgrows happiness
Healer's Hut | Heals sick and injured units | Mid-game or ahead of harsh winters
Trading Post | Krowns and trade | When going for Trade victory or needing Krowns
Training Camp | Warriors | When a fight is coming, not before
Defense Tower | Zone defence | Border zones facing neighbours
Opening Build (safe template, adapt to the map)
- Send your Scout out immediately in a loop around your starting zone.
- Put new villagers to wood first: build a Woodcutter's Lodge and a House.
- Add a food building next — Hunter's Lodge on a zone with deer, Fisherman's Hut on coast, or farms if the map suits.
- Colonize your best adjacent zone (food or wood) once you have spare food.
- Build a second House to keep population growing, and a Trading Post or clan-specific building when it fits.
- Before the first winter: at least a full winter's worth of food and wood banked.
- Start Lore research early; the first nodes often boost production or reduce winter penalties.
Rules of thumb:
- Keep no idle villagers.
- Watch the food consumption readout — if you're negative in autumn, you'll starve in winter.
- Keep one zone's slots for happiness buildings later.
Victory Conditions
Victory | How | Clans that like it
Fame | Reach the fame target | Stag and clans with fame bonuses
Lore | Meet the Lore requirement shown in the victory panel | Boar and lore-leaning clans
Trade | Meet the Krowns/trade requirement shown in the victory panel | Raven and merchant clans
Conquest | Destroy opposing clans | Wolf, Bear, Snake and other military clans
Map objectives | Some maps have their own (e.g. special monuments) | Varies
Always check the game setup screen — lobbies can disable some victories.

The Viking Age Edition bundle on Steam packages the base game with all 11 clan DLCs and the soundtrack.
Beginner advice: Stag is the most forgiving; Goat is strong economically; Wolf teaches aggression. Try Raven only once you understand the economy.
Military Basics
- Warriors are the baseline unit; specialists (axe throwers, shield-bearers and clan-unique units) come from dedicated camps.
- Each clan has a Warchief hero unit that is critical early — use it to clear neutral monsters.
- Neutral threats: wolves, draugar, giants and other monsters guard zones. Clearing them grants loot, fame or lore.
- Defensive structures (watchtowers/defense towers) protect zones cheaply against raids.
- Upkeep costs krowns — don't over-build army in peace.
- Military experience/fame accumulates from victories; some clans convert it into bonuses.
Seasons and Events
- Winter — food consumption up, wood consumption up, farms stop. Plan buffers.
- Harsh winter / blizzards — worse versions; the in-game calendar warns you.
- Random events such as rats, earthquakes or disease hit stored resources or buildings.
- Healers reduce the impact of sickness and injuries.
Game Modes
- Skirmish / multiplayer — standard matches against AI or players. Ranked lobbies are available (v4.0.19, March 2026 added ranked lobby security and a penalty for missing ready checks).
- Conquest — a solo/co-op mode of chained scenarios per clan (100+ hours of content).
- Story mode — Rig and Brand's saga, with Cross of Vidar as Part II set in Neustria.
- Free major updates such as Kröwns & Daggers, Sword & Solace and Trials of Odin have added modes, events and features over the years (plus seasonal events like Night of the Living Draugar) — check the in-game news board for what is currently active.
- Northgard Battlegrounds — a separate city-building auto-battler spin-off from Funday Games (revealed April 2026, open beta during July 2026's Tacticon).

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-expanding. Every new zone costs more food; stop when you can't staff the zones you own.
- Ignoring winter. Running out of food in winter kills villagers and tanks happiness.
- Building military too early without a reason — the upkeep drains Krowns.
- Leaving happiness negative. Production drops across the board.
- Not upgrading buildings. An upgraded lodge beats a second unupgraded one for the same workers.
- Forgetting to scout. Being surprised by giants or a rush is avoidable.
- Playing every victory type at once. Focus on one.
Advanced Tips
- Time colonization just after a harvest when food is highest.
- Use Lore to shore up weaknesses — pick winter or food nodes if you're food-constrained.
- Stack happiness sources before population booms.
- Watch enemy fame and lore in the scoreboard; if someone is close to a non-military victory, attack or trade-block them.
- In ranked, agree early which victories you'll contest; many ranked games are decided by fame or conquest.
- Keep a warchief alive — losing it early can decide the game.
FAQ
What's the difference between Northgard and Northgard: Definitive Edition? It's the same game; the Steam listing is now titled Definitive Edition and includes the base clans. Additional clans are separate DLC or in the Viking Age Edition bundle.
Which clan is best for beginners? Stag (Eikthyrnir) is the usual recommendation, followed by Goat.
Is multiplayer chat broken? As of the August 27, 2026 patch notes, "chat in multiplayer not working" is listed as a known issue.
Is Northgard still getting updates? Yes — 2026 has seen regular patches, most recently v4.3.26 on August 27, 2026.
What is Northgard Battlegrounds? A separate auto-battler set in the Northgard world, developed by Funday Games in partnership with Shiro; it had an open beta in July 2026.
How do I survive winter? Bank food and wood in autumn, and don't lean on farms (they stop in winter) — fish and hunt instead. Then research winter-related Lore.
