A guide to playing NBA 2K23 today: what the December 2024 server shutdown took away, which modes still matter offline, core controls and gameplay fundamentals, and how to get the most out of franchise play.
Researched September 2026 — NBA 2K23's online servers were shut down on 31 December 2024 and the game was delisted from sale on 30 November 2024. There are no further patches. Check the linked sources if something differs.
Status, in plain terms:
- Delisted: 2K stopped selling NBA 2K23 on Steam as of 30 November 2024. If you already own it, you can still download and install it from your library.
- Servers off: all multiplayer servers shut down on 31 December 2024. In 2K's words, "all game functions requiring online servers will no longer function." That includes online play, MyTEAM, VC-driven online features and anything that syncs with 2K's servers.
- What's left: offline basketball, such as quick games, franchise management and single-player challenges. If you want MyCAREER or MyTEAM, use a current NBA 2K release instead.
Quick Start
- Treat 2K23 as an offline basketball sim. Play Now games and franchise play are the core experience now.
- Expect server-based modes to fail. MyTEAM, online Play Now, and MyCAREER's online-connected features no longer work.
- Master the shot meter and timing before you raise the difficulty.
- Learn two or three dribble moves on the Pro Stick rather than mashing combos.
- Mind the Adrenaline Boosts. Explosive dribble moves use them up, and you only have a few per possession.
- Play defence with the left trigger (defensive stance) and don't gamble on steals.
- Use the franchise modes (MyGM and MyLEAGUE on the Steam version) for long-term play. They're the deepest offline modes.
- Back up your saves if you care about a long franchise, since there is no cloud-based 2K service to fall back on.
What the Steam Version Is
- NBA 2K23 released on 9 September 2022 (Steam lists 8 September because of time zones). The standard cover athlete is Devin Booker; special editions feature Michael Jordan, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, and J. Cole.
- The Steam store description describes MyCAREER aboard a cruise liner with shore excursions. That's the previous-generation (PS4/Xbox One-style) version of the game, not the current-gen "City".
- The previous-gen build's franchise modes are MyGM (you are the general manager, with a story-flavoured front-office career) and MyLEAGUE (full control of one or all 30 teams, with deep league-rule customisation). The current-gen equivalent was rebranded MyNBA.
- The MyNBA Eras (starting a league in 1983-84, 1991-92 or 2002-03 with period arenas and broadcast styles) were exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC, PS4 and Xbox One did not get them.
Modes and Their Status
Mode | What it was | Status after 31 Dec 2024
Play Now (offline) | Quick games with NBA, classic or WNBA teams | Works offline
MyGM / MyLEAGUE franchise | Full franchise management | Offline franchise play is the main draw
Jordan Challenge | Recreate Michael Jordan career moments | A single-player mode; server-independent content should still load, but anything tied to online rewards is gone
MyCAREER | Create a MyPLAYER; story and the cruise-ship Neighborhood | Relies heavily on 2K's online services and VC; expect it to be largely unusable
MyTEAM | Card-collecting team building | Online-only; gone
Online Play Now, Pro-Am, Rec, Triple Threat Online | Online multiplayer | Gone
The W | WNBA career mode | Online-linked features are gone
Blacktop | Streetball quick games | Offline local play
If a mode hangs on a connection screen, it depended on servers.
Controls (Controller, Xbox Layout)
2K is best played on a controller. The defaults:
Action | Button
Shoot | X (hold and release) or right stick (Pro Stick)
Pass | A
Bounce pass | B
Lob pass | Y
Sprint | RT
Post up / defensive stance | LT
Dribble moves | Right stick (Pro Stick)
Call plays / pick | LB / RB
You can check and remap everything in the controller settings. Keyboard is supported but awkward for Pro Stick moves.
Offensive Fundamentals
Shooting
- Timing is everything. Release at the right point on the shot meter. A good release on an open shot goes in far more often.
- Openness matters as much as timing. Contested shots by weaker shooters miss even with good timing.
- Shoot with your best shooters. Player ratings and badges decide who should take threes.
- Practise in offline Play Now or Blacktop games to learn each player's jumper timing.
Dribbling and Adrenaline Boosts
- NBA 2K23 introduced Adrenaline Boosts: a limited number of explosive moves per possession. Use them up and your ball handler becomes much less explosive.
- Plan a possession around one or two hard moves, like a hesitation into a drive, rather than chaining many.
- Size-ups and simple crossovers into a screen are more reliable than long combos.
Team offence
- Pick-and-roll is still the most reliable action. Call a screen, read the defence, and hit the roller or the open shooter.
- Post-ups with dominant bigs punish small defenders.
- Call plays for your stars when you're struggling. The AI runs sets well.
- Move the ball. Extra passes create open threes, which are easier than contested ones.
Defensive Fundamentals
- Hold defensive stance (LT) and keep your body in front of the ball handler.
- Don't spam steals. Reach-ins give up fouls and open lanes.
- Contest shots with a hand up rather than jumping at every pump fake.
- Switch control to the player nearest the play, especially on rotations.
- Rebound: box out before jumping for boards.
- Adjust team defence settings (on-ball pressure, help, switching) in the coaching menu for opponents with a clear strength.
Franchise Play (MyGM and MyLEAGUE)
This is the mode you'll spend the most time in offline.
Which one to pick
Mode | Best for
MyGM | Players who want a role to play: you run one team's front office and deal with owner, player and media demands along the way
MyLEAGUE | Players who want a sandbox: control any or all teams, edit league rules, run long multi-season or expansion leagues
If you mainly want to play games and build a roster, MyLEAGUE with one team selected is the least intrusive option. If you enjoy the management side and goals, MyGM gives each season more structure.
Setup tips
- Choose your team, league settings and difficulty. Turn on or off realism options like trade logic, injuries and salary rules to taste.
- If you only want to manage, you can simulate games. If you want to play, pick a shorter season length.
Team-building rules of thumb
- Cap space and contracts matter. Don't take on long, bad contracts for short-term upgrades.
- Draft picks are currency. Young, cheap talent with high potential is how franchises sustain.
- Player development: minutes and training help young players grow. Give prospects playing time.
- Fit over ratings: a roster of spacing, defence and one or two creators beats stacking similar stars.
- Scouting and the draft: spread your scouting across the prospects you're actually able to pick.
Saves
With online services off, your franchise saves live locally. Keep backups of the save folder before big roster moves or experiments.
Difficulty
Difficulty ranges from rookie-friendly settings up to Hall of Fame. Raise it gradually, and adjust gameplay sliders for a realistic sim if the defaults feel too arcade or too punishing.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying VC or expecting MyTEAM to work. Online services are gone, and 2K stopped selling the game.
- Burning Adrenaline Boosts early in the possession.
- Taking contested threes with non-shooters.
- Reaching for steals constantly on defence.
- Neglecting save backups for long franchise runs.
- Expecting current-gen features like MyNBA Eras or the City on the Steam version.
- Following current-gen guides for franchise mode. Menus and mode names (MyNBA vs MyGM/MyLEAGUE) differ between the two builds.
Advanced Tips
- Learn one player's jumper deeply. Shot timing differs per player; pick a go-to shooter and master that release.
- Exploit mismatches: switch a slow big onto your guard with a screen, then attack.
- Play-calling: in close games, run your star's sets and use timeouts to save stamina.
- Sliders: franchise players often tune sliders for sim realism. Change one or two at a time and test.
- Upgrade path: if you want online modes, the newer annual NBA 2K titles are the ones with live servers. 2K offered NBA 2K24 login bonuses in September 2023 to move players over.
FAQ
Can I still buy NBA 2K23? Not on Steam. It was delisted on 30 November 2024. Existing owners can still download it.
