A practical guide to Marvel's Midnight Suns: how the card-based tactics really work, how to run your days at the Abbey, which heroes and friendships to prioritize, how to build the Hunter, and how to get through the higher difficulties.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final content release (Storm DLC, May 2023; Legendary Edition bundles all four DLC heroes). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Every turn you get three card plays, two redraws, and one move. Plan the whole turn before playing the first card — the order of attacks, knockbacks, and environmental actions matters.
- Heroism is your real resource. Attack and Skill cards generate Heroism; Heroic cards and environmental attacks spend it. A good turn usually ends with Heroism in the bank.
- Environment and knockback are free damage. Knocking enemies into other enemies, walls, and explosive objects does a lot of the killing.
- Kill objectives first. Many missions end when you meet the objective, not when the map is cleared. Don't waste turns on reinforcements.
- Spend evenings at the Abbey. Hangouts, gifts, and Abbey events raise Friendship, which unlocks Combo abilities, passives, and card upgrades.
- Research and upgrade constantly. New cards, upgraded cards, and stat boosts at the Abbey's facilities matter more than any single mission.
- Your Hunter's Light/Dark choices unlock different cards. Commit to one side (or play balanced) deliberately.
- Don't hoard card upgrades. Upgrading a handful of core cards is stronger than spreading resources thin.
- Take injured heroes out of rotation. Injured heroes enter missions weakened; rotate the squad.
The Roster

Hero | Role summary
The Hunter | Your custom character; Light (support/heal), Dark (damage), or Power abilities

Captain America | Taunt and block; the best tank
Captain Marvel | Binary mode; big damage when charged
Doctor Strange | Card manipulation and support
Ghost Rider | High-risk damage that spends health
Hulk | Massive hits and knockback
Iron Man | Card generation and huge area damage
Magik | Portals and repositioning, flexible
Nico Minoru | Randomized spells, can be very strong
Scarlet Witch | Area damage and knockback combos
Spider-Man | Web control, environment use, card draw
Wolverine | Self-sustain and scaling damage
Deadpool (DLC "The Good, the Bad, and the Undead", Jan 26, 2023) | Momentum-based damage

DLC hero packs also add story missions and Abbey content.
Combat Mechanics
A turn in practice
- Card plays: three per turn by default; some cards and effects refund or add plays.
- Redraws: two per turn to swap cards out of your hand.
- Movement: one free move per turn to reposition a hero for a better angle.
- Cards: Attack cards (damage), Skill cards (buffs/utility), and Heroic cards (big effects paid with Heroism).
Heroism
- Generated when you play Attack and Skill cards (the amount varies by card).
- Spent on Heroic cards and on environmental attacks (throwing a car, triggering explosive barrels).
- Carry some over for the next turn to open with a big play.
Knockback and environment
Knocking an enemy into another enemy damages both; knocking one into a wall or hazard deals extra damage. Environmental objects have their own costs and effects. Use them before cards when possible — they're efficient damage.
Enemies
- Hydra forces, Lilith's demons, and bosses with special rules.
- Minions are fragile and fall to cheap attacks or a knockback into scenery; Elites and bosses need planning.
- Some enemies carry protective buffs or special rules; read the enemy tooltip and strip or work around them before committing big attacks.
Combos
Pairs of heroes with high Friendship can unlock Combo abilities. Friendship also gives passives that trigger in combat.
The Abbey: How to Run a Day
Each in-game day has a rough rhythm: morning at the Abbey (upgrades, research, chat), missions during the day, then evening activities (hangouts and clubs).
Key activities:
- Hangouts: the main way to raise Friendship with a hero.
- Gifts: give heroes items they like to boost Friendship.
- Training (the Yard): spar or train with heroes to earn bonuses.
- The Forge and card upgrades: analyze gamma coils at the Forge to unlock new cards, and spend essence to upgrade the cards you already have (per Wikipedia).
- Exploring the Abbey grounds: you find crafting materials, hidden items, and lore; the grounds also contain puzzles that unlock powerful rewards.
- Clubs: evening social activities that give Friendship.
Tip: always check the daily events and pick missions with rewards you actually need (hero upgrades, card packs, materials).
Building the Hunter
The Hunter has 40-plus abilities in three categories (per Wikipedia): Light (team support and Heroism generation), Dark (big damage that costs health or Heroism), and Power (a balance of offense and defense), with alignment choices affecting what unlocks.
Path | Plays like | Good with
Light | Healing, shields, buffs, Heroism generation | Glass-cannon heroes (Ghost Rider, Captain Marvel)
Dark | High damage paid for with health or Heroism | Tanks (Captain America, Hulk)
Power / balanced | Flexible, mix of both | Any team
Your Light/Dark standing is shaped by dialogue and choices. Pick responses that match your intended build.
Team-Building Tips
- Tank + damage + flex is a reliable trio: Captain America (tank), Blade or Wolverine (damage), and Magik, Spider-Man, or Doctor Strange (flex).
- Heroism engines: Iron Man and Spider-Man can generate lots of Heroism and cards.
- Knockback specialists: Hulk and Scarlet Witch turn the environment into damage.
- Bleed synergy: Blade and Morbius stack bleed together.
Your First Ten Hours
- Learn the tutorial missions properly. They teach knockback, environmental attacks, and Heroism — the three things that decide every fight later.
- Pick one "core" squad of two regulars plus the Hunter, and spend most of your early hangouts with those two heroes.
- Explore the Abbey grounds whenever a new area opens. Materials and secrets there feed crafting and upgrades that missions alone won't give you.
- Check each hero's deck after every mission. New cards arrive constantly; swap out weak early cards as soon as something better drops.
- Upgrade two or three staple cards per hero instead of everything. A strong Heroic card upgraded early carries many missions.
- Don't skip optional missions that reward hero-specific cards or resources — they compound.
Deck-Building Rules of Thumb
- Balance generators and spenders. A deck full of Heroic cards with nothing to generate Heroism will stall.
- Include at least one mobility or repositioning card across the squad; many enemies punish clumping.
- Keep one reliable single-target finisher for Elites and bosses.
- Area and knockback cards handle minion-heavy maps, which are common.
- Cut situational cards that only work with a specific teammate unless that teammate is a regular.
- Read upgraded versions. Some upgrades add a key keyword (like extra draw or free play) that changes how the card is used.
Mission Tips
- Read the win condition at the start; it's often "defeat X enemies" or "protect/destroy an object."
- Use your move before cards when a better angle opens up knockback lines.
- Spread damage to avoid overkill. Minions are fragile — don't spend a big attack on them.
- Bosses and Elites telegraph their big attacks; position tanks and use Guard/Taunt when a heavy hit is coming.
- Retreat is rarely possible, so commit to a plan each turn and keep a buffer of Heroism for emergencies.
Difficulty
Midnight Suns has multiple difficulty tiers, including several Heroic levels unlocked as you complete missions on lower difficulties. Higher tiers give better rewards but hit harder. Stick with the lower tiers until you understand card economy; bump difficulty up as your deck improves.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Playing cards in the wrong order. Always check whether a buff or a Skill should come first.
- Clearing every enemy. Objectives win missions; reinforcements keep coming.
- Ignoring Friendship. It's a major source of combat power, not just story flavor.
- Upgrading too many cards at once. Focus resources on a core set.
- Neglecting the Abbey. Unexplored areas hide rewards and materials.
- Running the same three heroes forever. Injuries and hero-specific missions require rotation.
Advanced Tips
- Bank Heroism for the next turn when you can't use it efficiently.
- Use your one move to line up knockback into walls, other enemies, or hazards.
- Redraw aggressively early in the turn to dig for Heroic cards.
- Kill minions with cheap cards, save expensive ones for Elites and bosses.
- Card upgrades and mods can change a card's role entirely; read the modifiers.
- Friendship perks and combos make the late game much easier; prioritize hangouts with your main squad.
FAQ
Is Midnight Suns an XCOM game? It's made by Firaxis (the XCOM studio) and is a turn-based tactics game, but it uses cards instead of percentage shots, and there are no hit chances — attacks always land.
How long is Midnight Suns? It's a long game; plan on dozens of hours for the story, with the Abbey and DLC adding more.
Which DLC heroes are worth it? All four (Deadpool, Venom, Morbius, Storm) add missions and content; the Legendary Edition bundles them.
Does the Hunter's Light/Dark affect the ending? Your alignment mostly affects abilities and some dialogue; the main story beats remain.
Is Midnight Suns still being updated? Content ended with the Storm DLC in May 2023. The game is still sold and regularly discounted (e.g., 85 percent off during the Firaxis 30th Anniversary sale, April 30 to May 14, 2026).
Can I respec the Hunter? Your Hunter's abilities are tied to Light/Dark choices and unlock progression; plan choices with your preferred path in mind.
