A spoiler-light guide to Jin Sakai's journey on PC: stances and combat, Ghost tools, armor and charm builds, Mythic Tales, collectibles that actually matter, the Iki Island expansion, Legends co-op, and the PC settings worth changing.
Researched September 2026 — current as of PC patch v1053.9.0623.1807 (July 2026, improved DualSense Edge support), after Patch 8 hotfix added ML-based FSR Frame Generation support (December 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Unlock stances early. Stances are the backbone of combat. Observing or killing Mongol Leaders (marked camps and occupied areas) is how you unlock new stances — hunt them whenever you see one.
- Parry and dodge before attacking. Blocking and perfect parries set up big damage. A blue glint means the attack breaks your block — parry it or dodge; a red glint means it can't be blocked or parried — dodge.
- Pick a difficulty that feels right. Easy, Normal, Hard and Lethal all exist; Lethal makes both you and enemies deadlier.
- Follow the Guiding Wind. Swiping the touchpad/pressing the guide key shows the wind toward your objective — no minimap needed.
- Chase golden birds and foxes. Birds lead to collectibles; fox dens give charm slots.
- Hot springs and bamboo strikes are power. Hot springs raise max health; bamboo strikes raise max Resolve.
- Do Mythic Tales early. They give major techniques and gear (e.g., Heavenly Strike, the Longbow).
- Upgrade armor. Armor upgrades are huge power spikes.
Story Structure (spoiler-light)
Act | Region | What to prioritize
Act I | Izuhara (south) | Start unlocking stances (Water first) from Mongol Leaders, grab the three Izuhara Mythic Tales (Heavenly Strike first), hot springs and bamboo strikes along the way
Act II | Toyotama (centre) | Kensei's and Gosaku's Armor from Mythic Tales, Dance of Wrath, more fox dens for charm slots; Iki Island becomes a sensible detour
Act III | Kamiagata (north) | The Undying Flame, finishing character Tales, final armor upgrades before the ending
Character Tales (Yuna, Lady Masako, Sensei Ishikawa, Brother Norio, Kenji) are the best side stories in the game and several reward strong gear, techniques or charms — don't skip them because they look like "side quests".
The ending includes a final choice; it changes a cosmetic reward (a dye/outfit option), not how much content you can access afterwards. You can keep exploring after the credits.
Difficulty Guide
Difficulty | Who it's for
Easy | Story-first players; generous timing and damage
Normal | Default balance
Hard | Enemies are more aggressive and tougher; parry windows tighter
Lethal | Both you and enemies die in very few hits; tight parry windows and enemies spot you faster in stealth — tense but fair once you master parries
You can change difficulty at any time in settings, and there's no achievement locked behind a difficulty.
Combat Fundamentals
Stances
Stance | Strong against | How to unlock
Stone | Swordsmen | Starting stance
Water | Shieldmen | Observe/kill Mongol leaders
Wind | Spearmen | Observe/kill Mongol leaders
Moon | Brutes | Observe/kill Mongol leaders
Switch stances constantly to match enemies. The correct stance breaks guards much faster.
Resolve & Healing
- Resolve is used for healing and special techniques.
- Build Resolve by killing enemies, parrying, and completing techniques.
- Bamboo strikes increase max Resolve.
Standoffs
Standoffs start fights with instant kills. Upgrades let you chain kills. Wait for the enemy to move — releasing too early fails.
Ghost Stance
Unlocked through the story. Build it by killing enemies without taking damage, then activate to kill multiple enemies quickly.
Ghost tools
Tool | Use
Kunai | Quick ranged damage/stagger
Sticky Bomb | Damage and stagger
Smoke Bomb | Escape or assassinate
Black Powder Bomb | Area damage
Wind Chime | Distract enemies
Firecracker | Distract or reveal enemies
Bows
- Half Bow: Standard and fire arrows.
- Longbow: Heavy and explosive arrows (from The Curse of Uchitsune).
Mythic Tales (base game)
Region | Tale | Main reward
Izuhara | The Heavenly Strike | Heavenly Strike technique, sword kit
Izuhara | The Curse of Uchitsune | Longbow and Explosive Arrow
Izuhara | The Legend of Tadayori | Tadayori's Armor
Toyotama | The Six Blades of Kojiro | Kensei's Armor, Kensei Headband
Toyotama | The Unbreakable Gosaku | Gosaku's Armor
Toyotama | The Spirit of Yarikawa's Vengeance | Dance of Wrath, sword kit
Kamiagata | The Undying Flame | Way of the Flame, sword kit
Completing all seven earns the "Teller of Tales" achievement. Heavenly Strike is a priority — it's an unblockable attack that trivializes many fights.
Armor Builds
Armor | Best for | How to get
Sakai Clan Armor | Balanced combat and standoffs | Main story
Ghost Armor | Stealth and Ghost stance | Gift from Taka (story)
Gosaku's Armor | Defense and parry windows | The Unbreakable Gosaku
Kensei's Armor | Aggressive melee damage | The Six Blades of Kojiro
Tadayori's Armor | Archery | The Legend of Tadayori
Traveler's Attire | Exploration | Early game
Other sets such as the Ronin Attire ("worn by those who live and die by the bow and the blade") and the Sarugami Armor (a monkey-spirit set that pushes its owner "to embrace risk and danger") are worth grabbing too — check the wiki's armor page for exact unlock steps.
Tips:
- Keep an exploration outfit (Traveler's) and a combat outfit.
- Upgrade armor with supplies and materials (linen, leather, silk, iron, etc.).
Charms
- Fox Dens (Inari Shrines) — follow the fox to the shrine; they're how you gain charm slots.
- Shinto Shrines — climbing challenges that end in a major charm.
- Other charms come from Tales and other side content.
Focus charms on Resolve generation, damage and defense depending on your style.
Collectibles Worth Your Time
Collectible | Reward
Hot Springs | Max health
Bamboo Strikes | Max Resolve
Fox Dens | Charm slots
Shinto Shrines | Charms
Haiku | Headbands
Records/Artifacts | Lore
Sashimono Banners | Cosmetic dyes
Pillars of Honor | Sword kits
Singing Crickets | Flute songs
Mongol camps / liberations | Supplies, map reveal, safer travel
Hot springs, bamboo strikes, fox dens and shrines are the ones that make you stronger; the rest are cosmetics and lore.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring stances. Fighting everything in Stone is slow and dangerous.
- Skipping Mythic Tales. They give essential techniques and gear.
- Not upgrading armor. Upgrades are a huge part of power.
- Hoarding Resolve. Use it to heal and for special attacks.
- Ignoring stealth. Many camps are easier with stealth kills.
- Rushing on Lethal without parry skills. Lethal punishes mistakes heavily.
Advanced Tips
- Learn perfect parry timing — it opens enemies up for huge damage.
- Chain standoffs with upgrades to wipe groups instantly.
- Mix tools — smoke bombs and sticky bombs can turn fights.
- Use Ghost stance for big fights.
- Switch armor on the fly based on the situation.
- Photo mode is excellent; it's worth exploring for screenshots.
