A spoiler-free guide to Escape Simulator: how to think like an escape-room solver, co-op tips, what rooms and DLC are available, cross-platform play after the 2026 Xbox launch, the community rooms, and how to build your own.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the June 2026 updates (Multiplayer server fix and Steam Frame beta support). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Pick up and examine everything. If it isn't nailed down, you can grab it, rotate it and look at every side. Clues hide on the undersides of objects, inside books and behind furniture.
  • Move furniture and smash things. Pots break, drawers open, furniture slides. Destruction is part of the design.
  • Pin clues to your screen. You can pin a clue (a note, a symbol, a page) so it stays visible while you work on another puzzle. Use it constantly.
  • Start with the four main packs — Labyrinth of Egypt, Adrift in Space, Edgewood Mansion and Omega Corporation — then the extras.
  • Play co-op with 2 to 3 people on built-in rooms. The developers recommend up to three for official rooms; more is allowed but gets chaotic.
  • Use hints when stuck. There's no shame; rooms are designed by real-life escape room operators and some leaps are tough.
  • Try community rooms. Over 4,000 community rooms exist via Steam Workshop, plus mod.io for cross-platform sharing.
  • Cross-play works with Xbox since May 2026, so you can play with friends on Xbox, Game Pass and the Windows PC Store.

Room Packs and Content

Main packs

Pack | Premise

Labyrinth of Egypt | You and your mentor discover an ancient labyrinth; a trap separates you

Adrift in Space | Debris hits your ship and you're heading into the sun

Edgewood Mansion | A dinner invitation turns into a Victorian mystery

Omega Corporation | Your friend vanished while investigating Omega Corp

Extras (per the store page)

  • A Portal-themed room (Aperture Science Laboratories)
  • An Among Us spaceship room
  • Santa's Workshop
  • Cats in Time
  • A spooky Graveyard
  • A funky 70's Room
  • Leonardo da Vinci's workshop
  • The Island (pirate treasure)
  • A Versus room to compete against friends
  • Inked — a free room released 9 April 2026, inspired by Somnium Games' Inked: A Tale of Love, in a hand-drawn paper-and-ink style; supports co-op up to 8

DLC

Paid DLC packs add more rooms. Recent ones include the Magic DLC (made with Somnium Games) and the Spy DLC (2025), which received hint and multiplayer fixes in its September 2025 hotfix. Check the store page for the full current DLC list.

How to Solve Rooms

Escape rooms follow patterns. Learning them speeds everything up.

The search pass

  • Sweep the room. Open every drawer, look under and behind every object, check walls, ceilings and floors.
  • Collect everything portable. Keys, tools, notes, odd objects.
  • Note every lock. Count combination locks, keypads, padlocks, directional locks, symbol panels. Each one is a puzzle waiting for a clue.
  • Match clues to locks. A four-digit lock needs a four-digit clue; a symbol panel needs a symbol sequence.

Common puzzle types

Type | What to look for

Number codes | Counts of objects, dates, clocks, math on notes

Symbol/color sequences | Order of paintings, colored items, lights

Hidden text | UV lights, reflections, text on object undersides

Physical puzzles | Placing objects on pedestals, fitting pieces, weights

Riddles | Books and notes with wordplay

Mechanisms | Levers, gears, pipes; order matters

Spatial | Maps, floor tiles, compass directions

Solver habits

  • Pin the clue you're working with and keep searching.
  • Don't force it. If a code doesn't work, you're probably missing a piece, not doing math wrong.
  • Everything is used once (usually). If you've used a key or clue, it's probably done — put it aside mentally.
  • Look at the room's theme. Egyptian rooms use hieroglyphs, space rooms use ship systems, the mansion uses Victorian objects.
  • Re-check areas that changed after solving a puzzle — new compartments often open elsewhere.

Co-op Tips

  • Split the room. Each player searches a section, then call out findings.
  • Designate a note-keeper who pins and tracks clues.
  • Voice chat helps a lot. Describing symbols out loud is much faster than typing.
  • Customize your character — there are cosmetics for co-op.
  • Don't hoard items. Hand things to whoever is working the matching lock.
  • Built-in rooms: up to 3 players recommended. Community rooms have been tested with up to 10.

Cross-platform play

Since the 27 May 2026 update, Escape Simulator supports cross-platform multiplayer with Xbox (including Game Pass and the Windows PC Store). A hotfix on 28 May improved cross-platform stability, versioning and Workshop room multiplayer. On 8 June 2026, the multiplayer code server moved to a new host to fix a problem where some ASUS routers' AiProtection feature blocked connections.

If friends can't connect: make sure everyone is on the latest version, and if you have an ASUS router, check its security settings (the server move should have fixed most cases).

Community Rooms and the Room Editor

Playing community rooms

  • Steam Workshop hosts thousands of rooms — sort by rating and try well-reviewed ones first.
  • mod.io Community tab — added for cross-platform sharing; the June 2026 update added an install progress bar and fixed tab bugs.
  • Community rooms vary wildly in difficulty and quality. Read reviews and check the stated player count.

Building your own

The built-in room editor lets you design rooms with objects, locks and logic, then share them.

  • Start small: one room, three or four linked puzzles.
  • Playtest with a friend who hasn't seen it.
  • Clue fairness: every solution should be findable in the room.
  • Publish to mod.io so Xbox and non-Steam players can play it: open the Workshop, select your room, click Publish, and choose the mod.io option before the final Publish. If your room isn't saved locally, download it from Steam Workshop first.

Pine Studio features community builders in its "Meet the Builders" posts — worth reading for design tips.

VR and New Platforms

  • Escape Simulator runs in VR on Meta Quest (Quest got the Inked and Treasure Island rooms in April 2026).
  • A June 2026 update added beta support for Steam Frame, Valve's upcoming VR device, plus performance optimizations across rooms.

Escape Simulator 2

Escape Simulator 2 released on 27 October 2025 with 12 new, larger rooms (about 50 minutes each), a social Lobby, rebuilt graphics/physics/networking, autosave, drop-in multiplayer and Room Editor 2.0 (in beta). Pine Studio has said it will keep releasing content for the first game too, and the April 2026 announcement confirmed ongoing support for both.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not examining objects from all sides. Many clues are on the bottom or back.
  • Tunnel vision on one lock. If stuck, switch to another puzzle and come back.
  • Too many players in official rooms. Over three people often means some just watch.
  • Forgetting pinned clues. Clear old pins so your screen stays readable.
  • Assuming it's a bug. It usually isn't — re-search the room before giving up.
  • Skipping hints entirely. Use them when the fun stops.

Advanced Tips

  • Speedrun your favorites once you know them; the rooms are replayable with friends who haven't seen them.
  • Use Versus for competitive escapes with friends.
  • Browse Workshop curators and top-rated lists for high-quality community rooms.
  • Build a room — designing puzzles makes you a much better solver.
  • Check the Steam news page for new free rooms; Pine regularly releases them.
