A practical guide to the original Dying Light (2015) and its big expansion The Following: survival in Harran, skill trees, weapons and crafting, surviving the night, co-op, and what to do once the credits roll.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Fix 1.55 (March 2026) and the 2025 Retouched Update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Which Dying Light is this? This guide covers the first game (Steam app 239140). Dying Light 2 Stay Human (2022) and Dying Light: The Beast (released September 2025, Kyle Crane's return in Castor Woods) are separate purchases. Techland still patches and runs events in the original: a Retouched visual/audio update landed in summer 2025, the Super Crane and Low Gravity events came back for the 11th anniversary in February 2026, and Fix 1.55 (March 2026) fixed a bug with loading The Following saves.

Quick Start

  • Get the Grappling Hook ASAP. It's in the Survivor tree and unlocks at Survivor level 12. It changes the whole game: faster traversal, instant escapes, and it lets you skip most rooftop routing. Grind Survivor XP (quests, airdrops, rescues, surviving nights) to get there, and buy it the moment you hit level 12.
  • Day is for looting, night is for XP. Infected are slow and dumb in daylight. At night Volatiles come out, but Agility and Power XP are doubled, and you get a Survivor bonus for making it to dawn.
  • Safe zones are your lifeline. Clear and power up every safe house you find (turn on the UV lights). They're fast-travel-free spawn points, stashes, and places to sleep through the night.
  • Don't fight what you can run from. Stamina is limited early and melee weapons break. Parkour away, kick enemies off ledges, and use the environment (spikes, electrified traps, explosive cars and barrels).
  • Repair and modify, don't hoard. Weapons have limited durability and repairs. Put blueprints on your best weapon rather than stacking dozens of mediocre ones.
  • Dropkick is the Agility skill you want. It unlocks early (Agility level 4, after Dodge), knocks down almost everything, and is one of the safest ways to deal with crowds early.
  • UV flashlight = night survival. Volatiles hate UV. Aim it at them to stun, then run to a safe zone or a UV trap.
  • Do the side quests in Old Town and the Slums. They're where most weapon blueprints and the best early loot come from.
  • Play co-op if you can. Up to four players, and Survivor/Power/Agility XP flows much faster with friends; many rivalry challenges pop up mid-session.

Core Systems

Day and night

Day | Night

Common infected | Slow Biters, a few Virals | Biters plus far more aggressive Virals

Special threat | Goons, Demolishers, Bombers, Toads | Volatiles and the Night Hunter (when playing Be the Zombie)

Your XP | Normal | Agility and Power XP doubled; survival bonus at dawn

Visibility | Full | Low; use the flashlight and survivor sense sparingly

Night runs from 21:00 to 06:00 in-game; on Normal it lasts about 7 real minutes, against about 64 minutes of daylight. When a Volatile or Night Walker spots you, a pursuit starts. It has four levels, shown by red markers on the minimap, and rises as more infected notice you. Break line of sight, use UV flashlights, flares and UV traps, or sprint to a safe zone. Sleeping in a safe zone skips to morning if you'd rather avoid it. Surviving outside a safe zone until dawn pays a large Survivor XP bonus.

Skill trees

Tree | How you earn XP | What it gives you

Survivor | Quests, airdrops, rescuing survivors, crafting, surviving the night | Grappling Hook, crafting perks, trading bonuses, Camouflage (using dead bodies to hide from the Infected), better loot

Agility | Parkour: running, climbing, jumping | Dodge, Dropkick, Slide, Vault (over enemies), Tic Tac, Grapple and Tackle, escape and movement upgrades

Power | Melee and firearm kills | Stun, Power Attack, Ground Pound, Stomp, Takedown, Sturdiness, Conserve Weapons, and other combat upgrades

Driver (The Following) | Driving the buggy, running over infected | Buggy handling, nitro, weapons for the buggy

Legend | All activity once core trees are maxed | Long-term stat boosts across damage, health, resistances

Priority order for a first run: Dodge → Dropkick / Vault / Slide (Agility, all early) → Grappling Hook (Survivor level 12) → combat upgrades in Power (Ground Pound, Stomp) → Survivor loot/crafting perks.

Key skills by tree (level required)

Levels are from the Dying Light Wiki. Skills also have prerequisites inside each tree, so plan a path rather than picking at random.

Tree | Early (levels 2–5) | Mid (levels 6–10) | Late (levels 11+)

Survivor | Survival Starter Kit (2), Backpacker (3), Boosters (3), Barter (4), Crafting Expertise (5) | Master Backpacker (6), Lucky Repair (7), DIY Grenades (8), Shield Mastery (8), Camouflage (9), Nimble Hands (10) | Grappling Hook (12), Camouflage Attack (12), Specialist (13), Craftsman (14), Ultimate Survivor (25)

Agility | Dodge (2), Grapple (3), Slide (3), Dropkick (4), Vault (4), Freerunning Adept (5), Health Regen (5) | Light Drop (6), Leg Breaker (6), Dropkick Bomb (7), Vault Stun (8), Brutal Grapple (9), Instant Escape (9), Tackle (10) | Freerunning Expert (12), Tic Tac (13), Reversal (14), Ultimate Runner (24)

Power | Stun (2), Kick Stun (3), Melee Throw (4), Sturdiness (4), Combat Adept (5) | Conserve Weapons (6), Power Attack (6), Ground Pound (7), Focus (8), Windmill (8), Stomp (9), Drop Attack (10) | Kill Frenzy (11), Stun Kill (12), Slam (12), Takedown (13), Ultimate Combatant (24)

Skills worth planning around:

  • Lucky Repair (Survivor 7) often repairs a weapon without using a repair slot, which effectively extends the life of your best gear.
  • Backpacker and Master Backpacker add weapon slots (4, then 6 more), so you can carry a dedicated Volatile-killer alongside a trash-mob weapon.
  • Conserve Weapons (Power 6) makes melee weapons lose durability much more slowly. Take it before you start using expensive blueprinted weapons.
  • Instant Escape (Agility 9) removes the most common early death: getting grabbed by a Biter in a crowd.
  • Stomp (Power 9) finishes downed enemies, and pairs perfectly with Dropkick and Ground Pound.
  • Ultimate Survivor, Runner and Combatant are the capstones at level 24–25; running and fighting without tiring changes the late game.

Weapons and crafting

  • Melee is the backbone. Rarity goes white → green → blue → purple → orange → gold (gold/legendary tier is mostly endgame and event rewards).
  • Durability and repairs: each weapon has a durability bar and a limited number of repairs. Once repairs run out, it's done. Some perks and blueprints increase repairs.
  • Blueprints add elements: fire, electricity, bleed, poison, impact. Elemental effects are the biggest damage jump you can get in the early-mid game. Shocking weapons stun groups; fire is great against crowds.
  • Firearms unlock partway through the story. Gunshots attract Virals, so use them for human enemies (Rais's thugs) and emergencies.
  • Throwables: Molotovs, grenades, firecrackers (distract a horde), and throwing stars. Firecrackers are underrated for escaping.
  • Crafting materials: loot everything. Metal parts, rags, alcohol, gauze, and chemicals cover most recipes. Medkits (bandages) should always be in your pocket.

Enemies to recognize

Enemy | What to do

Biter | Slow, deadly in numbers. Kick, keep moving.

Viral | Fast sprinter, spawns from noise. Fight or outrun; they climb.

Toad | Spits acid from range. Close the gap or shoot.

Bomber | Explodes when close. Kill it from range or kick it into a crowd.

Goon | Heavy hammer hitter. Dodge its slam, then dropkick or hit repeatedly.

Demolisher | Charges and throws debris. Circle, attack from behind, or use firearms and elemental weapons.

Screamer | Child infected that stuns you with noise. Find it and kill it fast.

Volatile | Night-only apex predator. Don't melee early; UV and escape. Later, with gold weapons and full Power tree, they're fightable.

Rais's men | Human enemies with guns and blocking. Firearms and elemental weapons shine.

Story and Area Walkthrough Outline

Kyle Crane, a GRE operative, is dropped into quarantined Harran to find Kadir "Rais" Suleiman. You'll bounce between the Tower survivors (Brecken, Rahim, Jade, Spike) and the GRE.

  • The Slums — tutorial and opening act. Establish safe zones, meet the Tower, and push Survivor XP toward level 12 for the Grappling Hook.
  • Old Town — second main map. Denser, taller, more human enemies and more side content. Bring your best elemental weapons.
  • The Following (expansion, included in Enhanced/Definitive editions) — a large countryside region with a drivable buggy and the Driver tree. It is best started after the main story or at a high level. It has two endings.
  • Other DLC: The Bozak Horde (stadium horde mode), Hellraid (medieval dungeon mode with its own weapons), plus many weapon and cosmetic bundles. The Definitive Edition (2022) bundles essentially all of it.

Missable/important: some side quests and survivors only appear during specific story beats. If you want everything, do side content in each area before pushing the main quest forward. Collectibles (notes, journals, voice tapes, and other lore items) remain collectible after the story in free roam.

Difficulty and Modes

  • Normal — standard.
  • Hard Mode — tougher enemies and a more punishing survival layer: a flashlight battery that dims with use, a pause menu that doesn't freeze the world, and a Survivor Sense that shows far less. Great second run.
  • Nightmare Mode (added with The Following) — nights last twice as long, enemies have much more health and damage, more Virals and Volatiles respond to noise, weapons break faster and Booster effects are much shorter. Your flashlight battery drains, the pause menu doesn't stop the world, and Volatiles don't show on the minimap at night. In return, Legend XP is multiplied by 10 (20 at night), with a 10% XP buff per extra co-op player, and gold-tier weapons can drop from certain chests. Dying loses your progress toward the next Legend rank (not the rank itself). The ultimate challenge.
  • New Game+ — carry over your progress and gear.
  • Be the Zombie — invade (or be invaded by) a player as the Night Hunter. Turn invasions on/off in the options.
  • Events — Techland periodically runs timed community events that reward gold-tier weapons and cosmetics. Check the in-game News/Events tab. Recent examples:

Event | Dates | What it asked / gave

Halloween | October 23 to November 6, 2025 | Super Crane powers active; kill 10 Goons, 15 Volatiles or 30 Biters for random gold weapons or the Van Crane Sword; a community goal of 1 million collected potions for King Mods

Super Crane | First week of the February 12 to 26, 2026 anniversary window | No grappling hook cooldown, longer range, easier enemy pulls; kill 100 zombies with fall damage for a gold-tier weapon

Low Gravity | Second week of the same window | Lighter jumps, softer landings, enemies sent flying; slay 100 zombies for another gold-tier weapon

Classic events keep coming back (Halloween and the anniversary events above are repeats), so gold weapons you missed often return.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not having a Survivor point ready for the Grappling Hook at level 12. Nothing else in the tree comes close.
  • Fighting every group you see. You'll burn stamina, durability, and health. Movement is the main tool.
  • Using guns carelessly. Shots pull Virals from all over the block.
  • Running out of repairs on your favorite weapon. Check the repair counter and swap to something else for trash mobs.
  • Ignoring safe zones. Every activated safe zone is a respawn point and stash. Claim them the moment you see them.
  • Going out at night with no plan. Know where the nearest safe zone and UV traps are before dusk.
  • Starting The Following too early. It's tuned for a mid-to-late game character.
  • Selling blueprint materials. Keep chemicals and parts; money is rarely the bottleneck mid game.

Advanced Tips

  • Night farming is the fastest XP. Once you can handle Volatiles, a planned night run gives double Agility and Power XP plus the dawn survival bonus.
  • Environmental kills are free damage. Spike walls, electrified traps, car alarms, gas cylinders: lure and kick enemies into them.
  • Kick off ledges. A dropkick near a rooftop edge is an instant kill on most enemies.
  • Use the grappling hook in combat. Grapple past a crowd, over a Demolisher, or up to a roof where most infected can't follow.
  • Co-op contests. In multiplayer, challenges pop up (most kills, race to a point). Winning them gives bonus XP.
  • Hard Mode for loot. Harder settings raise the stakes but also make the survival loop feel much more like the game was designed around it.
  • Legend levels are a long grind. Plan on hours of play; focus on stats that match your playstyle (damage for melee, health for co-op tanking).
  • Check your settings after the Retouched update. The 2025 update refreshed visuals and audio; re-tune brightness and night visibility.

FAQ

Is Dying Light still getting updates in 2026? Yes, maintenance-level. Fix 1.55 released in March 2026, and anniversary events ran in February 2026. Major new content has moved to Dying Light: The Beast.

Do I need to play Dying Light before The Beast? Not strictly, but The Beast continues Kyle Crane's story, so playing the original (and The Following) gives it much more weight.

How do I get the grappling hook? Through the Survivor skill tree. It becomes available at Survivor level 12; spend a point on it as soon as you get there.

How many players can play co-op? Up to four.

What's the best edition to buy? Any edition that includes The Following (the Definitive Edition bundles it with essentially all DLC). Check the store page carefully: the cheaper Essentials Edition bundles cosmetic packs and The Bozak Horde but lists The Following separately. Techland runs franchise sales several times a year.

How do I avoid Be the Zombie invasions? Turn off invasions in the online settings, or play offline.

Is The Following worth it? Yes. It's a large new map, adds the buggy and Driver tree, and has some of the best story content in the game.
