This guide takes you from your first clicks through ascension, golden-cookie combos, the four minigames, the dragon, and the long endgame of Cookie Clicker on Steam.

Researched September 2026. Current as of version 2.058 (January 2026 "housekeeping" patch; the last content update was 2.052, which added the 20th building). Live games change, so check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Click a lot early, then stop caring. For the first few minutes, clicking is most of your income. Once you own a few Grandmas and Farms, buildings take over and clicking only matters during golden-cookie buffs.
  • Buy upgrades as soon as you can afford them. A cheap upgrade that doubles a building's output is almost always a better buy than one more of that building.
  • Click every golden cookie. They show up on screen every few minutes. Frenzy (x7 CpS) and Lucky (a lump of cookies) are the common ones. Learning to use them well is the core skill of the game.
  • Keep a bank for Lucky. Lucky pays the smaller of 15% of your banked cookies or 15 minutes of CpS. Holding about 100 minutes of CpS (6,000x your CpS) in the bank gets the full payout. Hold about 7x that if you want the full payout during a Frenzy.
  • Don't fear ascending. Resetting gives you heavenly chips (a permanent CpS bonus plus currency for permanent upgrades). Your first ascension is the biggest power jump in the game.
  • Milk and kittens matter. Every achievement raises your milk. Kitten upgrades multiply CpS based on milk, so they are some of the strongest upgrades you can buy.
  • Leave the game open. There is no offline production at all until you buy the Twin Gates of Transcendence heavenly upgrade (and even then it's only 5% of CpS for the first hour, less after). Leaving the Steam version running in the background is the standard way to play.
  • The Steam version has cloud saves, but export anyway. Options > Export save gives you a text backup. Keep one before you try anything risky like the Grandmapocalypse or selling buildings.

How Production Works

Everything is measured in CpS (cookies per second). You raise it in three ways:

  • Buildings give base CpS. Each copy of a building costs 15% more than the last, so you get diminishing returns from spamming one building.
  • Upgrades multiply buildings, clicks, or everything. Tiered building upgrades usually double a building's output and unlock at 1, 5, 25, 50, 100, 150, and so on owned.
  • Global multipliers come from milk and kittens, heavenly chips (prestige), the dragon, Pantheon gods, and golden-cookie buffs.

The 20 buildings

20 | You | 540 septillion | 510 trillion | none

Orteil has said no more buildings are planned beyond "You". Future updates are meant to add minigames to existing buildings, and a dungeons minigame and UI overhaul are in progress.

What to buy next

A simple rule that works: buy whatever has the best cost per CpS gained, and always grab upgrades first. Mods like Cookie Monster (Steam Workshop) show "payback period" numbers for you. Without mods, a good rule of thumb is to push each new building to 1, then to 25 or 50 to unlock its upgrade tiers. Cursors deserve special mention: the "Thousand fingers" upgrade line gives Cursors (and clicks) a bonus for every non-Cursor building you own, so Cursors scale surprisingly well into mid-game.

Golden Cookies

Golden cookies appear by default every 5 to 15 minutes. The upgrades Lucky day and Serendipity each halve that timer, and Golden goose egg cuts it another 5%. Buy all three as soon as they unlock (they need you to have clicked a certain number of golden cookies).

Effect | Rough chance | What it does

Frenzy | ~40% | x7 CpS for 77 seconds

Lucky | ~40% | Lesser of 15% of bank or 15 min of CpS (+13)

Click Frenzy | rare (~3%) | x777 cookies per click for 13 seconds

Building Special | ~8% (needs 10+ of a building) | +10% CpS per building of a random type you own, 30 seconds

Dragonflight | needs dragon aura | x1111 click power for 10 seconds

Dragon Harvest | needs dragon aura | x15 CpS for 60 seconds

Cookie Chain / Cookie Storm | rare | Chained payouts / a shower of clickable cookies

Combos are how you make real progress. Buffs multiply each other. Frenzy x Building Special x Click Frenzy, with you clicking fast (or using an autoclicker if you're comfortable with that), can produce days of normal income in seconds. Later you "stack" golden cookies with Grimoire spells and Pantheon gods to force these combos on purpose (see below).

Wrath cookies and the Grandmapocalypse

Researching the Bingo Center/Research Facility line (bought as upgrades once you own enough Grandmas) eventually starts the Grandmapocalypse. Golden cookies turn into Wrath cookies (some good effects, some bad ones like Clot, which halves CpS), and Wrinklers start latching onto the big cookie.

  • Wrinklers reduce your CpS while attached but store the cookies they "eat". Popping one returns more than it ate (about 1.1x base, more with upgrades). A full ring of wrinklers left on for a long session is a net gain and a key idle strategy.
  • A Shiny Wrinkler is extremely rare and gives much more when popped. Don't pop it; save it for an ascension.
  • Elder Pledge temporarily stops the Grandmapocalypse, and Elder Covenant stops it permanently at a small CpS cost. Many players stay in the Grandmapocalypse for wrinklers during idle play and pledge when they want clean golden cookies for active play.

Milk, Kittens, and Achievements

Every achievement raises your milk by a fixed amount. Kitten upgrades (Kitten helpers, Kitten workers, Kitten engineers, and so on up the chain) multiply CpS by a percentage of your milk. Because of this, achievements have real mechanical value. Easy ones include buying 1 of each building, clicking a golden cookie, naming your bakery (click the name at the top), and dunking the cookie (the milk-related secret). The Stats menu lists achievements, and the wiki has the full list with unlock conditions.

Ascension and Heavenly Chips

Once you've baked enough cookies across a run, the Legacy button lets you ascend. You keep your achievements, heavenly upgrades, and sugar lumps. You lose buildings, normal upgrades, and banked cookies. Prestige levels grow with the cube root of total cookies baked, so each new level needs more cookies than the last.

When to do your first ascension: once you can buy a solid set of heavenly upgrades. A common approach is to wait until your prestige gain is at least a few hundred levels, and to ascend when progress has clearly slowed.

Heavenly upgrade priority (early)

Priority | Upgrade | Why

1 | Legacy | Unlocks the heavenly chip CpS bonus

2 | Heavenly cookies / Heavenly chip secret line | Makes prestige actually boost CpS

3 | How to bake your dragon | Unlocks Krumblor (Crumbs → dragon)

4 | Persistent memory | Grandma research runs 10x faster, so you reach the Grandmapocalypse sooner each run

4b | Box of brand biscuits and the other "Box/Tin" upgrades | More cookie-flavor upgrades

5 | Permanent upgrade slot I (then II, III...) | Carries a normal upgrade into every run

6 | Season switcher | Pick seasons on demand for seasonal upgrades and achievements

7 | Starter kit / Starter kitchen | Free Cursors and Grandmas on reset

8 | Twin Gates of Transcendence and the Angels line | Enables offline production (5% of CpS for the first hour), then raises it

9 | Heavenly luck, Lasting fortune, Decisive fate | Stronger, longer golden cookies

10 | Kitten angels | Another milk multiplier

Later, the Divine discount / Divine sales / Divine bakeries line cuts costs, and Golden switch, Residual luck, and the Chocolate egg trick become useful (see Advanced Tips).

Sugar Lumps

Sugar lumps unlock after you've baked 1 billion cookies in total. One lump grows at a time, and a lump takes about a day to become ripe. Harvest ripe lumps promptly. Clicking an immature lump can waste it, and if you leave a ripe lump alone it eventually drops on its own, so checking in daily keeps the cycle moving.

What to spend them on:

  • Level 1 for Farm, Bank, Temple, and Wizard Tower. This unlocks the four minigames and is by far the best use of your first lumps.
  • Level the minigame buildings a few more times. Farm levels enlarge the garden plot, Wizard Tower levels raise maximum magic, and Bank levels improve the Stock Market.
  • Cursor levels are a popular long-term dump (each level adds 1% to that building's CpS, as with every building).
  • The Sugar baking, Sugar frenzy, and Sugar craving heavenly/normal upgrades use lumps for burst power once you're comfortable.

Unusual lumps exist (Bifurcated, Golden, Meaty, Caramelized) and give extra lumps or other bonuses. The Pantheon and dragon can nudge lump timers.

The Minigames

Garden (Farm)

A plot of soil where you plant seeds bought with cookies. Crossing adjacent plants mutates new species.

  • Baker's Wheat is your starter seed. Plant it to unlock Thumbcorn, Cronerice, Gildmillet, and the rest of the tree through mutation.
  • Useful early targets: Bakeberry and Queenbeet (harvest when mature for a burst of cookies), Golden Clover (more golden cookies), Whiskerbloom (more milk power), Nursetulip, and Elderwort.
  • Unlocking every seed gives the Seedless to Nay reset option: sacrifice your garden to make seeds cheaper and grow faster.
  • Soil type matters: Fertilizer (faster growth), Clay (slower, more effect), Pebbles, Wood chips (better mutations), Dirt (default).
  • The Juicy Queenbeet is the rare sugar-lump plant and a long-term goal.

Stock Market (Bank)

You trade goods (Cereals, Chocolate, Butter, Sugar, Nuts, Salt, Vanilla, Eggs, Cinnamon, Cream, Jam, White chocolate, Honey, Cookies, Recipes, Subsidiaries, and more goods as you add buildings). Prices drift and follow modes (stable, rising, falling, chaotic).

  • The simple profitable play is to buy when a good is far below its usual price and sell when it recovers. Each good's typical price rises with your Bank level.
  • Your warehouse capacity per good depends on how many of the linked building you own, plus Bank levels and the Office upgrade.
  • The market is cheap to run while idling, and it has its own set of achievements.

Pantheon (Temple)

Slot up to three gods (Diamond, Ruby, Jade slots, from strongest to weakest). Swapping costs "worship swaps" that recharge over time.

God | What it does | Typical use

Godzamok (Ruin) | Selling buildings gives a temporary click buff | Active combos: sell Farms/Mines during a Click Frenzy

Mokalsium (Mother) | Stronger milk, but golden cookies appear less often | Idle play

Holobore (Asceticism) | Big CpS bonus, removed if you click a golden cookie | Pure idle only

Jeremy (Industry) | Buildings produce more, fewer golden cookies | Idle

Muridal (Labor) | Clicks stronger, buildings weaker | Clicking-heavy play

Cyclius (Ages) | CpS oscillates on a real-time cycle | Idle, with timing

Selebrak (Seasons) | Boosts seasonal effects | Season farming

Dotjeiess (Creation) | Cheaper buildings, pricier heavenly upgrades | Rebuy phase after ascension

Vomitrax (Decadence) | Longer golden cookie effects, less CpS | Combos

Skruuia (Scorn) | Stronger wrinklers and Grandmapocalypse | Wrinkler idling

Rigidel (Order) | Faster sugar lumps if you own a round number of buildings | Lump farming

A common idle setup is Holobore, Mokalsium, Jeremy. A common active setup is Godzamok, Mokalsium, Muridal (swap to suit).

Grimoire (Wizard Tower)

Spells cost magic, which regenerates. More Wizard Towers and more tower levels raise the maximum.

  • Force the Hand of Fate summons a golden cookie. This is the combo spell.
  • Conjure Baked Goods gives cookies (small chance to backfire).
  • Spontaneous Edifice gives a free building.
  • Haggler's Charm, Summon Crafty Pixies, Gambler's Fever Dream, Resurrect Abomination, Diminish Ineptitude, and Stretch Time round out the list.

The grimoire's outcomes are seeded. Casting the same spell at the same point gives the same result, which is why reloading a save won't reroll a bad cast. Community tools can predict upcoming Force the Hand of Fate results for planned combos.

Buy How to bake your dragon in heaven. Then, once you've earned 1 million cookies in a run, buy the Crumbly egg (25 cookies) and train it in the dragon menu. The first stages cost cookies. From the Dragon Cursor aura onward, each stage asks you to sacrifice 100 of a given building (100 Cursors, then 100 Grandmas, then 100 Farms, and so on). The final stage (to bake the dragon cookie) needs 50 of every building, and a second aura slot needs 200 of every building.

Aura | Effect | Use

Breath of Milk | Kittens 5% more effective | Early general pick

Radiant Appetite | All cookie production x2 | Best simple CpS aura

Elder Battalion | Grandmas +1% CpS per non-Grandma building | CpS stacking

Reaper of Fields | Golden cookies can become Dragon Harvest | Combos

Dragonflight | Golden cookies can become Dragonflight | Click combos

Epoch Manipulator | Golden cookies last longer | Combos

Dragon's Fortune | +123% CpS per golden cookie on screen | Stacked combos

Dragon's Curve / Reality Bending | Better sugar lump odds, stronger other auras | Lump farming

Tip: switching auras costs one of your highest-tier building (free if you own no buildings), so only swap when it's worth it (for example, before a planned combo).

Seasons

Seasons (Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Business Day) unlock seasonal upgrades and achievements. With Season switcher you can trigger them any time:

  • Christmas: Santa levels and reindeer. Buy the Christmas cookie upgrades and "A festive hat".
  • Halloween: Wrinklers drop Halloween cookies when popped.
  • Easter: Golden cookies and wrinklers drop eggs. The Chocolate egg is special (see below).
  • Valentine's: Heart biscuits.
  • Business Day: A cosmetic joke season.

Seasonal drops you've unlocked (cookies, eggs, hearts) stay unlocked after ascending, so you only need to farm each season thoroughly once and then rebuy the upgrades each run.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying buildings when an upgrade is cheaper. Upgrades are almost always the better value.
  • Spending your whole bank right before a Lucky. Keep the ~6,000x CpS reserve once golden cookies matter.
  • Ascending far too early or far too late. If you gain only a handful of prestige levels, wait. If progress has stalled for days, ascend.
  • Ignoring sugar lumps. Unlocking the four minigames early is a big boost.
  • Popping a Shiny Wrinkler casually. Save it for right before ascension.
  • Selling buildings without Godzamok active. Selling only pays off during a combo with Godzamok slotted (or for the Chocolate egg trick).
  • Leaving the Grandmapocalypse off forever. Wrinklers are one of the best idle income sources.
  • Not exporting saves. Cloud saves have failed for some players. A text export takes seconds.

Advanced Tips

  • Chocolate egg trick: Right before ascending, sell all buildings, pop all wrinklers, then buy the Chocolate egg (from Easter). It pays a percentage of your bank, which is huge after selling everything.
  • Planned combos: Stack Frenzy + Building Special, then cast Force the Hand of Fate for a Click Frenzy or Dragonflight, and have Godzamok slotted to sell Farms or Mines for extra click power. Rebuy afterwards.
  • Idle vs active builds: Idle is Holobore/Mokalsium/Jeremy, Radiant Appetite + Breath of Milk, and wrinklers attached. Active is Godzamok, Reaper of Fields/Dragonflight, and a full magic bar.
  • Golden switch gives a big passive CpS boost but turns off golden cookies. Use it while idling or asleep.
  • Garden sacrifice ("Seedless to Nay") is worth it once you've unlocked every seed.
  • Mods: Steam Workshop mods like Cookie Monster (information overlay) are very popular. If a mod breaks the game after an update, the launcher offers to restart without mods (added in 2.048).
  • Offline progress: Twin Gates of Transcendence enables offline CpS and the angel upgrades raise it. Until then, leave the game running.

FAQ

Is Cookie Clicker on Steam different from the browser version? It's the same game plus Steam extras: cloud saves, Workshop mods, a soundtrack by C418, and Steam achievements. New features go to browser first, then Steam and consoles.

Can I import my browser save into Steam? Yes. Export the save text in the browser version (Options > Export save) and import it in the Steam version.

When should I ascend for the first time? When you'd gain enough prestige for the core heavenly upgrades (Legacy, Heavenly cookies line, How to bake your dragon, Permanent upgrade slot I, Season switcher). Many players wait for a few hundred prestige levels.

Is the Grandmapocalypse bad? No. It trades normal golden cookies for Wrath cookies and wrinklers. Wrinklers are a net gain for idle play, and you can pause it with Elder Pledge whenever you want.

How do I get sugar lumps faster? Rigidel in the Pantheon (with a round number of buildings), the Dragon's Curve aura, some garden plants (Juicy Queenbeet), and certain heavenly upgrades.

Are there more buildings coming? Orteil said "You" (added in 2.052) is the final building. Upcoming work includes a dungeons minigame, a UI overhaul, and QoL changes.

Is it on console? Yes. Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch ports launched in May 2025 for about $5.
