A player-to-player guide to Black Myth: Wukong: combat fundamentals, stances and spells, builds, chapter-by-chapter boss outline, secret areas and the secret ending, and the mistakes that make fights harder than they need to be.

Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 1.0.21 (January 2026). No DLC has released; Game Science moved on to Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • This is not a Souls game. Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG with checkpoints and bosses, but you don't lose currency on death, enemies read differently, and dodging and staff combos matter more than blocking. There's no shield.
  • Dodge is your defense. Perfect dodges (dodging at the last moment) are rewarded. Spam-rolling drains stamina fast.
  • Build Focus, spend it on heavy attacks. Light attacks and perfect dodges fill Focus points; heavy attacks spend them for big damage.
  • Immobilize is your best early spell. It freezes an enemy for a few seconds so you can land free hits or heal. Use it on every boss.
  • Keeper's Shrines are checkpoints. Resting refills your gourd and respawns enemies. Use them to level and to upgrade.
  • Spend Sparks on survivability first. More health, stamina, and gourd efficiency early make every boss easier.
  • Explore side paths. Many optional bosses guard spirits, crafting materials, and gear. Some chapters hide entire secret areas.
  • Meditation Spots give an extra Spark each. Look for them near scenic cliff edges.
  • You can go back. Earlier chapters remain reachable through Keeper's Shrines, so missed content isn't lost after a chapter ends.

State of the Game (2026)

  • Latest patch: 1.0.21 (January 2026) fixed bugs, crashes, performance, and graphical issues on multiple platforms. No new content was added.
  • DLC status: no DLC has been released or officially announced. At Gamescom 2025, Game Science revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new standalone game rather than a Wukong expansion. It has no release date. Treat "Wukong DLC" articles and videos with suspicion.

Combat Fundamentals

Core Actions

Action | What It Does

Light attack | Builds Focus; combo chain ends in bigger swings

Heavy attack | Spends Focus points for high damage (hold to charge)

Dodge | Invincibility frames; a perfect dodge builds Focus and can trigger counters

Spell | Uses Mana; four spell categories (see below)

Spirit | Transforms briefly into a defeated spirit's skill; uses Spirit gauge

Transformation | Becomes a boss form with its own health bar and moveset

Gourd | Heal with limited charges, refilled at shrines

Vessel | Special item with a unique effect on a cooldown

Stances

Stance | Style | Strength

Smash | Default, aggressive combos | Resolute Strike counter, reliable damage

Pillar | Climbs the staff to evade and strike from above | Dodges ground attacks while charging

Thrust | Long reach pokes | Range and quick Focus spending

Try each stance on early bosses. Smash with Resolute Strike is the most common beginner-friendly option: time it to counter an enemy attack.

Spells

Category | Spells

Mysticism | Immobilize, Ring of Fire, Spell Binder

Alteration | Cloud Step, Rock Solid

Strand | A Pluck of Many, Life-Saving Strand

Transformation | Red Tides, Azure Dust, Ebon Flow, Hoarfrost, Umbral Abyss, Violet Hail, Azure Dome, Ashen Slumber, Golden Lining, Dark Thunder

Traversal | Somersault Cloud

  • Immobilize — freezes enemies; the backbone of early boss fights.
  • Cloud Step — leaves a decoy and turns you invisible; great for repositioning or stealth hits.
  • Rock Solid — a timed deflect. Parry an attack and stagger the enemy.
  • Ring of Fire — creates a ring that grants bonuses inside it and damages enemies.
  • A Pluck of Many — summons clones; excellent against tough single targets.
  • Red Tides — the fire transformation you get from Guangzhi in Chapter 1.

Only one spell per slot can be equipped, so choose between Cloud Step or Rock Solid, and between Immobilize and Ring of Fire, depending on the fight.

Progression Systems

  • Will: currency from enemies. Spend at shrines and shops. You keep it on death.
  • Sparks: skill points from leveling and Meditation Spots. Invest in the skill trees (Vitality, Mana, Stamina, Stance skills, Spells).
  • Gear: craft armor and staves at Keeper's Shrines using materials from bosses and exploration. Armor sets give bonuses; staves raise attack and add effects.
  • Gourd, Drinks, and Soaks: the gourd heals; Drinks change its effect; Soaks add bonuses (e.g., extra healing, stamina regen).
  • Spirits: defeat special enemies to absorb their spirit, then equip one for a transform attack and passive bonus.
  • Curios: passive accessories.
  • Elixirs and consumables: some permanently raise stats; others are temporary buffs for boss fights.

Staves Worth Knowing

  • Willow Wood Staff — starting staff.
  • Bronze Cloud Staff — an early upgrade crafted at a Keeper's Shrine.
  • Loongwreathe Staff — an upgrade of the Twin Serpents Staff, unlocked by defeating the optional Red Loong (Chapter 1) and needing Loong Scales from Chapter 2; strong through the midgame.
  • Golden Loong Staff — the next step up from the Loongwreathe Staff after beating the Cyan Loong on Turtle Island (Chapter 3).

Build Archetypes

Build | Core Pieces | Playstyle

Heavy-Attack Smash | Smash stance, Focus-gain skills, Resolute Strike, crit-oriented armor | Build Focus, land charged heavies, counter big attacks

Pillar Evasion | Pillar stance skills, Cloud Step, Focus-preserving upgrades | Dodge ground combos from atop the staff, punish with falling strikes

Spell Rotation | Immobilize, A Pluck of Many, Ring of Fire, Mana investment | Lock enemies down, summon clones, burst during openings

Transformation Burst | Red Tides or later transformations, Spirit gauge upgrades | Use the transformation as a second health bar and damage window

Counter/Deflect | Rock Solid, Resolute Strike, Thrust or Smash | Parry and counter for stagger

Stat priority: health and stamina first, then Focus and damage, then Mana for spell-heavy builds. Don't neglect gourd upgrades.

Chapter Outline and Key Bosses

Chapter | Area | Notable Bosses

1 | Black Wind Mountain | Guangzhi, Guangmou, Wandering Wight, Lingxuzi, Elder Jinchi, Red Loong (optional), Black Wind King, Black Bear Guai (final)

2 | Yellow Wind Ridge | Tiger Vanguard, Stone Vanguard, Shigandang, Black Loong, Yellow Wind Sage (final); secret area: Kingdom of Sahali (Fuban)

3 | The New West | Kang-Jin Loong, Kang-Jin Star, Captain Wise-Voice, Cyan Loong, Yellowbrow (final)

4 | The Webbed Hollow | Violet Spider, Yellow Loong, The Scorpionlord, The Duskveil, Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master (final); secret area: Purple Cloud Mountain

5 | Flaming Mountains | Yin-Yang Fish, Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast, Yaksha King, Red Boy (final)

6 | Mount Huaguo | Giant Shigandang, The Great Sage's Broken Shell (final)

Boss Tips

  • Guangzhi (Chapter 1): aggressive fire combos. Use Immobilize and punish after his big swings. Beating him gives the Red Tides transformation.
  • Wandering Wight (Chapter 1): a notorious difficulty spike. Use Immobilize the moment it closes in, punish only after its big slams, and heal at range rather than mid-combo.
  • Tiger Vanguard (Chapter 2): fast and relentless. Perfect dodge his long sword combos and punish with Smash heavies.
  • Yellow Wind Sage (Chapter 2): his wind attacks are much more dangerous without the right preparation — explore Chapter 2 fully first.
  • Kang-Jin Star and Captain Wise-Voice (Chapter 3): long, punishing fights. Bring Soaks and full gourd upgrades.
  • Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master (Chapter 4): multi-phase; learn his phase transitions and save your transformation for the final phase.
  • Red Boy (Chapter 5): fire-heavy; fire resistance gear and Soaks help.
  • The Great Sage's Broken Shell (Chapter 6): the final boss. Arrive with upgraded gear, Spirits, and your best transformation.

Secret Areas and the Secret Ending

  • Kingdom of Sahali (Chapter 2) — home of Fuban; accessed through a hidden route.
  • Purple Cloud Mountain (Chapter 4) — a hidden area with its own story and bosses.
  • Great Pagoda (Chapter 3) — leads to Mei-jian Peak, the secret area where the secret ending's key fight happens.

Secret ending: according to the Fextralife wiki, you need to complete the game's secret areas and the treasure hunter's questline to face Erlang, the Sacred Divinity again (you first meet him in the prologue) at Mei-jian Peak, reached through the Great Pagoda in Chapter 3. Clear that sequence, then defeat the Great Sage's Broken Shell at Birthstone. The ending then plays out differently, with the elder monkey telling the story of Wukong. Use a checklist guide before Chapter 6 if you're aiming for it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating it like Dark Souls. There's no blocking; aggressive staff pressure and dodging win fights.
  • Holding onto Immobilize. It's on a cooldown; use it early and often.
  • Ignoring side paths and shrines. Optional bosses give spirits, gear, and crafting materials you need later.
  • Neglecting the gourd and Soaks. Healing efficiency is the difference between winning and losing long fights.
  • Spending all Sparks on damage. Survivability and Focus-gain skills do more for most players.
  • Skipping Meditation Spots. Each gives a Spark.
  • Rushing into Chapter 6 to finish without the secret area prerequisites if you want the secret ending.

Advanced Tips

  • Perfect-dodge counters: a perfect dodge into a light attack opens combo routes and builds Focus quickly.
  • Resolute Strike timing: activate it against a telegraphed attack to negate damage and counter. It's the best damage tool against many humanoid bosses.
  • Transformations are free health. Your transformation has its own health bar; use it to absorb a dangerous boss phase.
  • Ring of Fire rewards staying in position — plan it for fights where you can hold ground.
  • Swap stances per boss. Pillar dodges many sweeping ground attacks; Thrust helps against evasive enemies.
  • New Game Plus carries over your progress and gear so you can chase missed items, secret areas, and the other ending.
  • Performance: if you have stutters on PC, update to the latest patch and GPU drivers — 1.0.21 targeted performance and crash fixes.
