A practical guide to World of Tanks on PC/Steam: vehicle classes, armor and spotting mechanics, economy and progression, what Update 2.4 changed, the current Battle Pass and events, and the habits that separate good players from the rest.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 2.4 "Overdrive" (1–2 September 2026) and Battle Pass Season XXI. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Stay at low tiers for a while. Tiers I to V are cheap, forgiving, and where you learn the maps. Rushing to Tier X or XI with no map knowledge loses credits and games.
  • Spotting wins games. You can only shoot what someone on your team has spotted. Staying unseen while enemies are visible is the core skill.
  • Angle your armor and hide your weak spots. Show the enemy a sloped plate, not a flat side. Hull-down (only the turret showing over a ridge) is the strongest position for most tanks.
  • Don't fire from bushes you're hiding in unless you're far back. Firing drops your camouflage; the 15-meter rule means a bush directly in front of you stops concealing you once you're too close to it.
  • Aim at weak spots. Hold the aim over an enemy; the reticle turns green when you are likely to penetrate, red when you are not.
  • Carry a repair kit, first aid kit and fire extinguisher (or equivalent consumables) on every tank.
  • Mount the core equipment first. Gun Rammer, Vertical Stabilizer, Improved Ventilation and a vision or camo item carry most builds.
  • Don't blow gold (premium currency) on credits early. Save it for the Premium Account or a good Premium tank if you plan to invest.
  • Watch the minimap every few seconds. Most deaths come from being flanked or left alone on a lane.

Vehicle Classes

Class | Job | Play it like

Light Tank (LT) | Spot, harass, flank | Stay hidden, spot passively, reposition constantly

Medium Tank (MT) | Flexible damage, flank support | Trade shots from good angles, rotate to where you're needed

Heavy Tank (HT) | Hold the front, absorb damage | Hull-down or side-scrape, take and win brawls

Tank Destroyer (TD) | High alpha damage, support fire | Stay back or ambush, punish anything spotted

SPG (artillery) | Indirect fire from a top-down view | Hit spotted targets, stun groups, stay far from the front

Light Tank Roles (Update 2.4)

Update 2.4 split light tanks into three roles, and more than 30 light tanks were rebalanced to match:

  • Scout — best concealment and mobility, built for reconnaissance.
  • Versatile — a balance of spotting and dependable firepower.
  • Support — trades concealment for more offensive capability.

Light tanks are now matched against same-tier light tanks of the same role, and Tier VII+ battles allow no more than two light tanks per team. Wheeled vehicles are limited to one per team and matched against each other.

Core Mechanics

Penetration, Armor and Angling

  • Effective armor increases with angle. A 100 mm plate angled at 60 degrees is far thicker along the shell's path.
  • Autobounce: shells that hit at very steep angles ricochet regardless of penetration (except HE and some HEAT behaviour).
  • Shell types: standard AP/APCR, premium rounds (higher penetration), HEAT (high penetration but stopped by spaced armor and tracks), HE (low penetration, splash damage even without a pen), and HESH on some British vehicles.
  • Weak spots: lower plates, cupolas, turret rings, and sides. Learn them per tank; the in-game armor inspector (in the garage) shows every plate.

Spotting and Camouflage

  • Each tank has a view range and a camouflage value. Spotting happens when an enemy's view range beats your camouflage.
  • Moving and firing both reduce your camouflage. Standing still in a bush is the stealthiest.
  • Bushes add camouflage; firing from a bush gives you a short-lived penalty.
  • The sixth sense indicator (a lightbulb) tells you when you've been spotted.

Tiers and Matchmaking

There are 11 tiers and 800+ vehicles across 11 nations. Tier XI is the new top tier; Update 2.4 added six more Tier XI vehicles. Matchmaking spreads tiers, so a Tier VIII can meet Tier X. Pick fights you can win and support higher-tier teammates instead of leading the charge.

Economy and Progression

Currency | Earned by | Spend on

Credits | Every battle | Tanks, modules, equipment, ammo, repairs

Combat XP | Every battle (per vehicle) | Researching modules and the next vehicle

Free XP | A slice of every battle's XP | Skip modules or research anything

Gold | Purchases, events, missions | Premium Account, Premium tanks, slots, conversions

Bonds | Ranked, events, special missions | Bounty and improved equipment, directives

Rules of thumb:

  • Research the gun first on most tanks, then the tracks/engine. Stock tanks with bad guns are miserable.
  • Premium tanks earn more credits. Most free players grind Tier X with a credit-making Premium tank in between.
  • Don't fire premium ammo at everything at mid tiers; it eats your credits. Load a handful for hard targets.
  • Crew XP matters. Crew skills and perks boost core stats; train your main crews and keep them together as you move up a line.
  • Field Modification unlocks at higher tiers and lets you spend XP on stat trade-offs per vehicle.

Equipment Starter Picks

Tank type | Typical build

Heavy / brawling medium | Gun Rammer, Vertical Stabilizer, Improved Ventilation or Improved Hardening

Sniping medium / TD | Gun Rammer, Vertical Stabilizer, Coated Optics or Camouflage Net

Scout light tank | Coated Optics, Low Noise Exhaust System or Camouflage Net, Binocular Telescope or Turbocharger

What's New in Update 2.4 "Overdrive"

  • New German heavy line: Pz.Kpfw. 55 (VIII), Versuchspanzer 57 (IX), Kampfpanzer 67 (X), and the Tier XI Pz.Kpfw. Neu. All share the Shell Calibration System, which fine-tunes shell parameters against a chosen target.
  • Five more Tier XI vehicles:

Vehicle | Nation / type | Researched after | Unique mechanic

Vz. 63P | Czechoslovakia, heavy | Vz. 55 (its predecessor) | Adjustable Fuze Setter: a penetrating first shot boosts the second shot's damage; a failed first shot boosts the second's penetration

BV-111 | Sweden, TD | UDES 15/16 | External Ammunition Feed mode: bigger single shots, longer reload, less mobility

CAV mod. 71 | Italy, medium | Progetto M40 mod. 65 | Forced Loading Mechanism: rechargeable charges that cut a reload to a short fixed time

WZ-219 | China, light | WZ-132-1 | Infrared Search and Track: scans a frontal sector that narrows while boosting view range, at a concealment cost

Ho-Ri Shugo | Japan, TD | Ho-Ri 3 | Coaxial Rocket Launcher firing unguided HE rockets on a slow recharge

  • Light tank rebalance into scout, versatile and support roles, plus matchmaking limits described above.
  • Personal Missions: Operation Fossa (Sector 3) rewards the new Tier X German wheeled medium, the Fossa VM 68. Missions must now be done in order, some must be done multiple times in different vehicles, and "With Honors" is granted by completing every mission in the Operation (which also awards a year of WoT Premium Account plus a Tier XI vehicle). Daily and Weekly missions also advance your progress if you're stuck.
  • Spotlight: a pre-battle reveal of three players from your team in Tier V+ Random Battles. Press Esc to skip.
  • Onslaught: Year of the Phoenix (first season: Season of the Azure Phoenix). Capturing Observation Posts launches an Illumination Flare that reveals enemies in its area and increases the damage they take.
  • An audio-visual effects overhaul with an "Effect and 3D Attachment Visibility" setting.
  • Welcome Back package for players who haven't fought a battle in 60+ days: 30-day rentals of Tier VIII and IX Premium vehicles, x5 XP missions, Personal Reserves, 2D styles and 30 days of WoT Premium Account.

Current Season and Events (September 2026)

  • Battle Pass Season XXI: Into the Forgotten — 2 September to 25 November 2026 (EU times). Three chapters of 50 stages, all three Core Vehicles are Tier XI (Object 432U, AT-FV230 Breaker, STK-2), and 15 new 3D attachments. It is the last season to earn Battle Pass Tokens for the Token Store, which offers special Tier IX vehicles such as the KB-52 and Saryuda. Plan your token spending before it ends.
  • Waffenträger: Genesis — 18 to 29 September 2026. A PvE-style event against upgraded Sentinels; destroy Generators and eliminate the Blitzträger. Earn Keys to play as the Blitzträger auf E 110 and progression rewards including Modules with rerollable contents.
  • First Deployment (4 to 14 September 2026) has ended; it was the launch event for the new German heavy line.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Driving into the open at the start. Early deaths hand the enemy a numbers advantage.
  • Sitting at max range in a heavy tank. Heavies exist to hold ground; you're wasted at the back.
  • Showing your side or lower plate when peeking. Angle and reverse out.
  • Tunnel vision. Staring down one lane while your flank collapses.
  • Chasing damage over positioning. A tank that survives keeps shooting all game.
  • Selling tanks you'll regret. Keep a couple of favourites and a credit earner.
  • Racing to Tier X/XI with a stock tank and green crew. Your early high-tier games will be rough and expensive.

Advanced Tips

  • Learn two or three sidescraping spots per map for your heavies. Maps such as Himmelsdorf, Ensk and Mines reward brawling knowledge.
  • Count reloads. When an enemy fires, you have a window. Peek when their gun is empty; hide when it's loaded.
  • Passive spotting: in a scout LT, sit in a bush with Coated Optics just behind a ridge line. Your team deals the damage and you get the assist credit.
  • Wait out the firing penalty: after you fire in a bush, the camouflage penalty is short-lived; wait it out before firing again if you're close.
  • Track and hold: hitting an enemy's tracks as they peek freezes them for your teammates.
  • HE on artillery and paper-thin tanks is reliable damage even without penetration.
  • Check the Tier XI abilities. Each of the six has a unique mechanic; for example, the CAV mod. 71's short-reload charges win trades if you save them for the right moment.
