A full guide to Team NINJA's Three Kingdoms soulslike: the deflect-centered combat system, Morale and Fortitude, the Five Phases and how to build around them, example builds with real gear, main boss order with tips, DLC and endgame, and the mistakes that make the game feel harder than it is.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Ver1.305 (June 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Deflect is the game. Timed deflects negate damage, build your Spirit and drain the enemy's. Practice it until it is instinct.
  • Always deflect red Critical Blows. They cannot be guarded. A successful deflect breaks the enemy's stance; taking the hit lowers your Morale Rank.
  • Plant every Battle Flag and Marking Flag. They raise your Fortitude Rank, the minimum Morale you keep after dying.
  • Morale is your real level inside a stage. Kill enemies, land Fatal Strikes, Martial Arts and spells, and capture flags to raise it; it caps at 25.
  • Pick one Phase to focus early. Spreading points evenly makes spells and gear scaling weak.
  • Use Divine Beasts on bosses. They are your trump card: either summon for damage or Resonate for buffs.
  • Allies make the game easier. Story companions and online Recruit sessions are both legitimate ways to learn fights.
  • Ver1.305 made the first boss easier. If Zhang Liang in Village of Calamity walled you before, that fight was adjusted in June 2026 (first playthrough only).

Core Combat

The Spirit Gauge

Spirit is Wo Long's stamina and aggression meter in one:

  • Gain Spirit by landing attacks and deflecting.
  • Spend Spirit on dodges, blocks, Martial Arts and Wizardry Spells, and lose it when hit.
  • At the negative limit, you are left defenseless. Watch the gauge in long fights.

Deflect

A timed defensive action that redirects the attack, negates damage, raises your Spirit and lowers the enemy's. Deflecting is always better than guarding when you can time it.

Critical Blows

Telegraphed with a red glow. They cannot be guarded, and taking one can knock your Morale Rank down. Deflecting one breaks enemy stance dramatically and recovers negative Spirit.

Fatal Strikes

When an enemy's Spirit is broken or they are unaware, a Fatal Strike deals heavy damage. It consumes surplus positive Spirit to increase damage, and against bosses it also lowers their Morale Rank.

Martial Arts and Wizardry

  • Martial Arts are weapon-specific special moves costing Spirit. Rare weapons can have two variants.
  • Wizardry Spells are organized by the Five Phases; you can equip up to four at once. Higher Morale Ranks unlock more powerful spells.

Morale, Fortitude and Genuine Qi

System | What it does

Morale Rank | Your in-stage power level (max 25). Raised by killing enemies, Fatal Strikes, landing Martial Arts or spells, and capturing flags; lowered by dying and by highly damaging blows such as Critical Blows

Fortitude Rank | Your minimum Morale after death. Raised by claiming Battle Flags and Marking Flags

Genuine Qi | Experience currency. Dropped on death; recover it by defeating the enemy that killed you

Enemy Morale | Shown above enemies; higher than yours means dangerous

Rule of thumb: clear a stage's flags before challenging the boss. Walking in with high Fortitude means even a death leaves you strong.

The Five Phases

Leveling up puts points into the five Phase Virtues. Each raises HP plus specific stats, and each is tied to an element.

Phase | Key stats (all also raise HP) | Resistance it raises | Spell element and status

Wood | Most HP of the five, Spirit Defense, spell duration | Earth | Lightning; Shock

Fire | Spirit gain from attacking, cheaper Martial Arts | Metal | Flame; Burns

Earth | Spirit gain from deflecting, max equipment weight | Water | Stone; Heaviness

Metal | Spirit Stability, cheaper Wizardry Spells | Wood | Toxin; Poison

Water | Stealth, cheaper deflects | Fire | Ice; Chill

Phases follow the Five Phases cycle: each Virtue raises resistance to the phase it overcomes (Wood over Earth, Earth over Water, Water over Fire, Fire over Metal, Metal over Wood). Use elements that exploit a boss's phase, and remember that each elemental status lowers resistance to another element (Shock lowers Toxin resistance, Burns lowers Ice, Chill lowers Stone, Heaviness lowers Lightning, Poison lowers Flame).

Build Advice

  • Wood is the safest beginner pick: big HP and buff spells.
  • Water suits stealth and fast weapons, with strong deflect efficiency.
  • Metal focuses on debuffs and status (poison) and makes spells cheaper.
  • Fire is aggressive: attack to gain Spirit, then burn it on Martial Arts.
  • Earth carries heavy armor and rewards deflect-heavy play.

Example Builds (from Fextralife)

Build | Phase | Main gear | Spells | Divine Beast | Armor

Unrivaled Spear | Wood | Unparalleled Spear, Curve-Headed Glaive | Lightning Weapon, Inner Breath, Absorb Vitality, Amplify Damage | Qinglong | Dauntless Tiger Servant Set

Stealth Assassin | Water | Chivalrous Swordsman Dual Swords, Night Owl Cane, Feathered Cavalry Bow | Alacrity Haste, Amplify Damage, Ice Weapon, Unseeable Form | Baize | Libationer Guo Set

Venomous Taoist | Metal | Sword of Yu The Great, Tiger Hunting Bow | Life Wither, Thorn Shot, Venom Snare, Amplify Damage | Tengshe | Evil Taoist Set

Treat these as late-game targets; early on, any decent weapon of the type you like works, and set bonuses matter more once you have full sets.

Divine Beasts

Divine Beasts such as Zhuque, Baihu and Qinglong come to you through alliances in the story.

  • Summon for phase-specific area damage, ideal against bosses or big groups.
  • Resonate for a buff that empowers you and allies.
  • The Divine Beast Gauge charges in combat; plan to have it full before a boss phase change.

Main Boss Order

These are the base-game bosses in order (from Fextralife's boss list, which includes demon bosses and sub-battlefield fights):

Boss | Battlefield

Zhang Liang, General of Man | Village of Calamity

Zhu Yan, then Feng Xi | Two Chivalrous Heroes

Zhang Bao, General of Earth | The Valley of the Crying Wraiths

Zhang Jiao, General of Heaven | The Demon Fort of the Yellow Heaven

Aoye | In Search of the Immortal Wizard

Baishe, then Zhang Rang | Fall of the Corrupted Eunuch

Hua Xiong, then Lu Bu (human) | The Battle of Hulaoguan Pass

Taotie | Centuries of Glory Burned Away

Sun Jian (demon) | Darkness Over the Hanshui River

Dong Zhuo | Tyrant's Final Banquet

Xiahou Dun (demon) | War's Flames Blaze Fiercely

Zhang Liao | The Way of the Warrior

Lu Bu (demon) | Lu Bu, Mightiest Among Men

Yan Liang and Wen Chou, then Liu Bei (demon) | Behold the Glaive of Righteousness

Yuan Shao, Yu Ji and the Embodiment of Demonic Qi | Decisive Battle of Guandu

Blindfolded Boy | Crouching Dragon Roars

Boss Tips

  • Zhang Liang is the infamous first-boss wall. Ver1.305 (June 2026) made him take more Spirit damage, deal less HP and Spirit damage, made the Divine Beast Gauge charge faster in Village of Calamity, and fully restores your HP and Dragon's Cure Pot uses after the Zhang Liang battle (before his demon form). These changes apply to the first playthrough only.
  • Lu Bu is aggressive and fast in both fights; focus on deflecting his Critical Blows and punish with Fatal Strikes.
  • General rule: use the stage's flags to max Fortitude, bring a Divine Beast charged, and choose elemental spells the boss is weak to.

DLC and Endgame

DLC | Release | Highlights

Battle of Zhongyuan | 29 June 2023 | New stages and bosses, the Cestus weapon type, new Soaring Dragon difficulty

Conqueror of Jiangdong | 27 September 2023 | New stages, Long Sword weapon type, new Divine Beast

Upheaval in Jingxiang | 12 December 2023 | New weapon category (the whip), new Divine Beast, a harder difficulty and endgame content

  • The Thousand-Mile Journey is an endgame mode with its own rewards; Golden Horse Hooves are its exchange currency.
  • The Complete Edition (February 2024) includes the main game, all three DLC packs and collaboration DLC. A standard edition without DLC was re-released at a lower price in August 2024.
  • As of September 2026, Wo Long is part of the updated Team NINJA Essential Collection bundle on Steam.

Online and Co-op

Recruit sessions let you bring other players into your battlefields, and story allies often fight with you. Co-op makes early bosses much more manageable and is a good way to learn patterns.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Guarding instead of deflecting. Guarding drains Spirit; deflecting builds it.
  • Rushing the boss. Skipping flags leaves you with a low Fortitude Rank and a weaker Morale floor.
  • Dodging Critical Blows. You can, but deflecting them is how you break the enemy.
  • Spreading Phase points. Focus one or two Phases for real scaling.
  • Hoarding the Divine Beast. Use it; it recharges.
  • Ignoring enemy Morale. An enemy with a higher Morale Rank than yours deserves caution.

Advanced Tips

  • Deflect chains: many enemy combos can be deflected hit-by-hit; learn each attack's rhythm.
  • Save Spirit for Fatal Strikes: surplus positive Spirit increases Fatal Strike damage.
  • Stealth openers: a sneak attack into a Fatal Strike is the fastest way to clear dangerous elites.
  • Status stacking: Metal (Poison) and Water (Chill) status builds make bosses much easier, and chaining statuses exploits the resistance drops each one causes.
  • Upgrade your Dragon's Cure Pot whenever possible; more heals means more deflect practice per attempt.
  • Revenge enemies: killing the enemy that killed you recovers your Genuine Qi.

FAQ

Is Wo Long easier than Sekiro or Nioh? Many players find it more forgiving thanks to allies, Fortitude and generous checkpoints, but the deflect timing is strict.

How do I beat Zhang Liang? Deflect his Critical Blows, use your Divine Beast when charged, and stay patient. As of Ver1.305, his first-playthrough fight is easier and your HP and healing are refilled before the demon form.

What is the max Morale Rank? 25.

What should I level first? Wood for safety, or whichever Phase matches your weapon and spell style. Focus rather than spreading points.

Is the DLC worth it? Yes if you enjoy the base game: new weapon types (Cestus, Long Sword, whip), new difficulties, bosses and endgame.

Is Wo Long still updated? Occasionally. Ver1.305 in June 2026 rebalanced the first boss and added ROG Xbox Ally support.
