A practical guide to Space Marine 2's combat, the seven classes, Operations and Siege progression, and the Year 3 roadmap. It's for players finishing the campaign and players who want to push the higher PvE difficulties.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 14 "Confrontation" (July 28, 2026) plus Hotfix 14.2, with Patch 15 due October 1, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Where the game is right now: Year 2 ended with the Confrontation Update (Patch 14.0). It added two Eternal War PvP maps (Sanctum on Avarax and Facility on Demerium), the Thousand Sons Scarab Occult Terminator Sorcerer Terminus enemy, and new Heroic weapons and armour. The official Steam Workshop opened on July 30, 2026. Patch 15 lands October 1, 2026 for the second anniversary. It adds Chaos Siege (you play Chaos Space Marines on a new Avarax Siege map), a One-Handed Thunder Hammer for Tactical, Assault, Bulwark and Techmarine, and Crucible Mode, where you take optional Penances (self-debuffs) for Purity XP and unique cosmetics.

Quick Start

  • Play the campaign first, at least on Average. It teaches parry, gun strike and execution timing, and it sets up the Operations, which tell the side story running alongside Titus's missions.
  • Armour is your real health bar. Executions and gun strikes restore armour, so aggressive play keeps you alive. Hiding behind cover does not.
  • Learn the two defence colours. A blue indicator means you can parry (or perfect-dodge). A red (unblockable) attack means you have to dodge. Getting this right matters more than anything else in the game.
  • Parry, then gun strike. A successful parry opens the enemy up. The follow-up shot (gun strike) does big damage and refunds armour.
  • Pick one class and stick with it for a while. Class level unlocks perks. Spreading XP across seven classes early keeps them all weak.
  • Don't jump difficulties too fast. Minimal and Average are for learning. From Substantial up, teammates and perks start to matter a lot.
  • Spend Armoury Data on the weapons your main class actually uses. It unlocks weapon tiers and is the usual bottleneck. Requisition is mostly for cosmetics, so it won't make you stronger.
  • Look after Medicae Stimms. Heals are limited. Don't grab a stimm with only a sliver of health missing if a teammate is nearly dead.
  • Stick together. Downed Marines bleed out after about 30 seconds unless someone revives them. Splitting up on high difficulties usually wipes the squad.
  • Check the weekly Stratagems. These are Operations with modifiers, and they're the best source of bonus rewards.

Core Combat Mechanics

The combat triangle

Action | When to use it | What it gives you

Parry (block at the right moment) | Blue-indicator attacks, especially Majoris enemies | Opens a gun strike or an execution window

Perfect Dodge | Red (unblockable) attacks, or when surrounded | A counter-attack window, plus i-frames

Gun Strike | Right after a parry or perfect dodge | Heavy damage and armour back

Execution | Enemy flashes red after enough damage | Big armour refill and brief invulnerability

Fencing weapons | Melee weapons tagged Fencing on their weapon card | A more forgiving parry window, for players who build around parrying

Balanced / Block weapons | Melee weapons tagged Balanced or Block | Balanced sits in the middle; Block trades parry timing for the ability to block and soak hits

Every melee weapon is tagged Balanced, Fencing or Block. Check the tag on the weapon card in the Armoury, because it changes how forgiving your defence is.

Contested Health is the grey part of your health bar after you take damage. Deal damage quickly and you get some of it back. Take more hits and it's gone. This is why you should always fight back rather than back off to heal.

Enemy tiers

  • Minoris: Hormagaunts, Termagants, Cultists, Poxwalkers. Fodder that you sweep with heavy attacks and AoE.
  • Majoris: Tyranid Warriors, Raveners, Chaos Space Marines. These are what actually kill you. Parry them and execute them.
  • Extremis: Zoanthropes, Lictors, Carnifexes, Chaos Terminators, Helbrutes. Focus them as a team, and stagger or execute them when their health flashes.
  • Terminus: Named bosses such as the Hive Tyrant, the Neurothrope, and (since Patch 14) the Scarab Occult Terminator Sorcerer. As of Hotfix 14.1 the Sorcerer's teleport does much less damage, and its double-beam follow-up has a longer delay so there's time to dodge.

The Seven Classes

Space Marine 2 has seven PvE classes. The seventh, Techmarine, arrived after launch. Each class has its own ability, weapon pool and perk tree.

Class | Ability | Typical kit | Role

Tactical | Auspex Scan (marks enemies, and they take extra damage) | Bolt rifles, Plasma Incinerator, Melta, chainsword | Flexible damage and marking bosses

Assault | Jump Pack (leap and ground-slam) | Heavy melee (Power Axe, Thunder Hammer, Power Fist), pistol | Melee burst and crowd smashing, no primary gun

Vanguard | Grapnel Launcher (pull yourself into an enemy) | Carbines, Melta, combat knife/chainsword | Fast mobile skirmisher

Bulwark | Chapter Banner (plant it to restore squad armour) | Storm shield, power sword/fist, pistol only | Tank and team sustain, very forgiving

Sniper | Camo Cloak (go invisible and reposition) | Bolt Sniper Rifle, Las Fusil, Stalker Bolt Rifle | Removes Extremis enemies at range, spotting

Heavy | Iron Halo (a shield that blocks ranged fire) | Heavy Bolter, Heavy Plasma Incinerator, Multi-Melta, pistol | Sustained ranged DPS, but no melee weapon

Techmarine | See the in-game class card (the post-launch seventh class) | One of the classes getting the One-Handed Thunder Hammer in Patch 15 | Support-leaning utility

Beginner picks:

  • Bulwark is the most forgiving. The shield blocks ranged fire, the Banner saves runs, and it parries well.
  • Heavy is the easiest way to learn Operations because you can shoot from a distance. Watch your ammo, though.
  • Tactical is a good all-rounder, and Auspex makes Terminus bosses melt for the whole team.

Squad composition tips:

  • Operations squads are built from different classes, so agree on roles in the lobby rather than racing to pick.
  • A Bulwark or Heavy paired with a Sniper or Tactical makes a strong ranged core. Add an Assault or Vanguard to handle Majoris packs up close.
  • Swap to the ranged-heavy classes on Operations with lots of Zoanthropes or Chaos Terminators.

Recent class and weapon balance (Hotfix 14.1)

  • Heroic Stalker Bolt Rifle: now needs 3 body shots (down from 4) to trigger its auspex scan, and the scan radius went from 8 to 10 metres.
  • Heroic Combi-Flamer: faster flamer charge-up, +10% bolter damage, and the flamer barrel can now be refilled at Ammo Crates.
  • Heroic Combi-Melta: the melta barrel can again be refilled at Ammo Crates.
  • Heroic Power Fist: can fire a melta blast after a single charge in hold stance.
  • Tactical perk Kraken Penetrator Rounds: a bug that gave penetration to projectile weapons was fixed.

Progression Systems

Class level and perks

  • Each class levels separately and unlocks perks. You can take one perk per row, and the store blurb says there are up to 25 per class. Recheck your perk row choices every few levels.
  • Prestige (added in Year 2) lets you replay a class's progression for extra rewards. Get a class to max level before you worry about it.

Weapons

  • Weapons move up through rarity tiers: Standard → Master-crafted → Artificer → Relic. Heroic weapons are special variants added in later updates.
  • Each weapon has its own perk tree. Levelling a weapon on a lower difficulty only goes so far, because higher tiers need you to finish Operations at higher difficulties.
  • Requisition is the cosmetic currency, and Armoury Data unlocks weapon upgrades. Armoury Data is usually your bottleneck, so spend it on the weapons you actually use.

Difficulty ladder

Minimal → Average → Substantial → Ruthless → Lethal → Absolute. Each step up increases enemy damage, spawn density and elite counts, and reduces available heals. Rewards scale up too. On the top tiers:

  • There are fewer health stimms, and enemies hit much harder.
  • You need your perks. Weapons and class level really do gate you, so a new class on Lethal is a liability.
  • Voice or ping communication matters. Call Extremis spawns.

Game Modes

Mode | What it is | Why play it

Campaign | Titus's story, solo or 3-player co-op | Learn the mechanics; about a dozen hours

Operations | Three-player PvE missions that run alongside the story | Main PvE progression loop

Stratagems (Weekly) | Operations with random Battlefield Conditions (for example Squad Unity, Split Up, Come Prepared) | Bonus rewards, variety

Siege | Endless wave defence with a points economy | Loot, Accolades, weekly Siege ordeals

Eternal War | 6v6 PvP: Annihilation, Seize Ground, Capture and Control, and more | PvP cosmetics, weekly PvP ordeals

Crucible (Patch 15) | Take a Penance from the Chaplain before an Operation | Purity XP and unique armour pieces

Chaos Siege (Patch 15) | Siege as Chaos Space Marines on Avarax, with Cultists, Ritualists and a Helbrute | New Siege challenge

Operations

There are Tyranid Operations and Chaos Operations. The Chaos list (from the "Divine Retribution" event, August 2026) is Vox Liberatis, Reliquary, Fall of Atreus, Obelisk, Vortex, Disruption, Purgation. Tyranid Operations include Inferno, Decapitation, Ballistic Engine and later additions such as Exfiltration.

General Operation tips:

  • Data-Slates and Gene-Seed are optional pickups that give extra rewards. Gene-Seed has to be carried to extraction.
  • Armoury Data boxes are hidden along the route. Look off the main path.
  • At big holdout events, stand near ammo crates and set up at a choke point. Don't try to hold the whole arena.

Siege mode

  • You earn points per wave. Spend them on ammunition, equipment charges, Medicae Stimms, or reinforcements (Cadians, Space Marines, or the Dreadnought).
  • Early on, bank points for heals and ammo. Summons pay off later when waves spike.
  • Weekly Siege ordeals give Accolades. Hotfix 14.2 fixed a bug where Accolades weren't granted after Weekly Siege and Weekly Eternal War.

Eternal War (PvP) Basics

  • The classes mirror PvE, but perks and abilities are tuned separately. Heavy and Sniper are strong at long range, and Assault punishes players who are out of position.
  • Other players don't fall for the PvE rhythm. Play cover, stay with your team and focus fire.
  • Patch 14 added Sanctum and Facility. The Year 3 roadmap promises a new PvP mode with Weekly Stratagems before the end of 2026 (Patch 15 or 16).
  • The monthly Community Events often reward PvP. For example, "Arch Enemies" (July 2026) gave 200 Accolades for 3 PvP matches.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Blocking red attacks. You can't. Dodge them.
  • Backing off to recover. Armour comes back from executions and gun strikes, not from distance.
  • Using heavy attacks into Majoris enemies with no parry plan. Heavies are for crowds.
  • Playing Ruthless or higher with a low-level class and Standard weapons. You'll drag the squad down.
  • Ignoring Contested Health. After a hit, attack right away to get some of it back.
  • Spending Armoury Data on weapons you won't use. Pick a loadout first.
  • Splitting from the team in Operations. Downed Marines far away rarely get revived.
  • Wasting Siege points on summons in the early waves.

Advanced Tips

  • Perfect dodge into gun strike is as strong as a parry and works against unblockable attacks. Practise the timing on Hormagaunt packs.
  • Fencing weapons have a more forgiving parry window. They're the go-to for players who build around parrying.
  • Tag Extremis enemies with Auspex (Tactical) or the Heroic Stalker Bolt Rifle's auto-scan so the whole squad gets the damage bonus.
  • Save executions for when you need armour. A Majoris flashing red is a free armour refill, so time it for when you're low.
  • Bulwark Banner timing: plant it just before a big wave rather than after the team's armour is gone. It restores armour to everyone in the radius.
  • Sniper Camo Cloak also works as an escape and revive tool. Cloak, revive, then leave.
  • Weekly Stratagem conditions can make certain classes much stronger. "Come Prepared" gives everyone extra stimms, for example. Read them before you queue.
  • Modded play is isolated. Workshop mods move you to private lobbies with separate progression and a watermark, so official progress stays clean.

Year 3 Roadmap (announced September 24, 2026)

  • Patch 15 (October 1, 2026): Chaos Siege, the One-Handed Thunder Hammer, Crucible Mode.
  • Patch 16 (by the end of 2026): the roadmap lists a new PvP mode with Weekly Stratagems and more gameplay additions across Patches 15 and 16.
  • Early 2027: a new class that Saber describes as "highly anticipated", plus more Operations and weapons, reworks of several core systems, and five cosmetic/Champion packs across Year 3.

FAQ

Is Space Marine 2 still getting updates? Yes. The Year 3 roadmap was published on September 24, 2026. Patch 15 arrives October 1, 2026, and Patch 16 is due before the end of 2026.

What's the best class for a beginner? Bulwark for survivability, or Heavy if you like shooting. Tactical is the best all-rounder once you're comfortable with parrying.

How do I get Relic weapons? Level the weapon through its perk tree and complete Operations at higher difficulties. The top tiers are gated behind difficulty, not just XP.

Can I play solo? The campaign and Operations can be played solo with AI bots filling the squad. Siege and the higher difficulties are much easier with human teammates.

Is there crossplay? Yes. Space Marine 2 supports crossplay between PC and consoles. Check the game's settings if you want to turn it off.

Do mods affect my main progression? No. Modded sessions are private and have separate progression, according to the official Workshop launch post (July 30, 2026).

When does Chaos Siege come out? With Patch 15 on October 1, 2026.
